As my favorite blogger (Joshua Becker, more about him below) likes to remind us, “Overcoming the pull of consumerism is a difficult challenge” and requires encouragement.

Here are ten (10) people that have inspired me the most during my journey towards a more simplified and meaningful life:

1. Marie Kondo

She helped me really SEE the world from a different perspective. Truly flipped my worldview. She helped me appreciate things like never before and be thankful for the things I owned. After finishing my tidying festival I felt incredibly grateful for everything I had and there was no way I could go back, to forget the experience. And that is the beauty of it.

2.-3. The Minimalists

After reading Marie Kondo’s books I was looking for other sources of inspiration and found The Minimalists. I watched their first documentary “Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things” and felt even more validated in my pursuit to give away the excess. There is more to life than things: the important things.

For a long time, their content brought me daily inspiration. I love the song on The Minimalists Podcast! Joshua and Ryan helped me broaden my view of simplicity from things to LIFE.

4. The Minimal Mom

Dawn from The Minimal Mom is such an easygoing person who is easy to relate to. She is a mom of four so she is a credible source of information when it comes to simplifying with young children. In her videos, she makes simplifying both casual and fun.

5. Zero Waste Home

Bea Johnson helped me see that zero waste can be easier in many regards than “conventional” shopping/living. Her book Zero Waste Home offers very practical advice. She makes zero waste look easy, casual, normal, even cool!

Joshua Becker from Becoming Minimalist is my continued source of inspiration. He is a great writer and writes about a wide range of topics. He also shares stories written by others about simplicity.

7. Kim John Payne

I read Simplicity Parenting around the same time as Marie Kondo’s book Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It encouraged me to simplify my child’s possessions as well. It also gave me permission to not be everything to my kids. That it’s okay if they don’t have everything. That boredom and simplicity are actually good for kids. I recommend all his books. Each of them has given me the confidence and guidance to parent better and more simply, in all aspects of parenting.

8. Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan’s book In Defence of Food clarified what exactly is food. Growing up in Finland in the 80’s that’s what we had, real food. I remember when the first McDonald’s opened in my town. Food was not a complicated matter back then and it doesn’t have to be now either if you read Pollan’s simple food rules.

My Journey Towards Simplicity

So if you would like to read a bit more, I’ll start at the beginning 🙂 

When my kids were little, we would always say that Grandma was very fancy. This is because my mom has always loved anything and everything sparkly. So much so, that glitter and lots of gold jewelry were her trademarks.  She was the type of woman that was always very put together.

As a young child, I grew up in a home where the decor reflected my mom’s love for sparkle and fancy. Our home was filled with a large variety of various trinkets, candles, and all things sparkly.

Well, of course, it was my job to clean the living room, where most of my mom’s collection was placed. Let me tell you, I complained all the time about having to clean and dust around all the nicknacks.

I despised having to dust all that stuff so much that I regularly declared that I would never have so much stuff in my own house.

When I finally moved out on my own, like most recent college graduates, I kept my decor to a minimum. Yep, I was true to my commitment not to have a house filled with stuff everywhere!

The Accumulation of Stuff

Fast forward, I am now married, have two children, and a full-time career.  In addition, I am also involved with lots of church activities, as well as most of my children’s activities. Sports, music lessons, parties, school activities, they were doing it all.

At this point, both my home and my schedule have amassed quite a collection. However, I’ve always been a fairly organized person so things don’t look too bad. After all, I am spending quite a bit of time decluttering and keeping things together.

By now I have a regular cleaning routine, but because of all the stuff, it doesn’t take long for the house to feel messy. The garage is full, my husband’s motorcycle is parked in the garage, but there is no room for our cars.  Not a big deal, we have plenty of street parking.

After living in our home for many years, news arrives that we are going to have to make a move. I have four months to pack up everything. Four months is a lot of time, this shouldn’t be too bad, I tell myself.  I am confident that the move will be fairly simple.

For the next four months, I take my time packing things up.  Surprised at how much we really have accumulated, I start decluttering as I go along. This resulted in getting rid of quite a bit of stuff!

Moving day approaches and I am feeling really good, in fact, I am still confident the move will be a simple move.  After all, I have had a lot of time to pack and I have gotten rid of tons of stuff.

Reality Sets In

As you may have guessed by this point, my simple easy move was a complete nightmare and I am not exaggerating. It literally took up two full weeks to complete the move and we had a ton of help.

In case you are wondering what happened….. TOO MUCH STUFF . I am not kidding, our move turned into a two-week-long project.  Every time I thought we were almost done, more stuff seemed to magically appear.

By the end of our move, I was both physically and emotionally exhausted.

Once we got everything moved to the new place, I continued decluttering even more stuff as I unpacked.  We were also able to finally empty the storage we had been paying for. Yes, on top of everything else we had separate storage.

While in some way this may have been the beginning of my journey toward simplicity, there is I am afraid a little more to the story. One year later we were set to move back to our home. With the storage now empty and more items decluttered, I was very thankful the move would be much easier. NOT.

It honestly took another full week of moving. I kept asking myself how is it possible that we still have this much stuff.

It got to the point that by day number five, I was so exhausted and frustrated that I began leaving valuable items in the alley just to avoid moving them. I am talking antique solid maple beds and dressers, amongst many other items. I knew something seriously needed to change!

A Change In Thinking

One thing that did become very clear as a result of these moves, was that I was able to very quickly and in a very real way, see the burden and stress created by the accumulation of unnecessary stuff. I was done and wanted to get rid of everything .

There was one problem, however, my husband did not share my desire to purge. While I personally was tired of being weighed down by all our stuff I did not know how to make a change without my husband being on board?

This is really when my journey toward simplicity began. One of the first things I did was to read tons of articles on minimalism and simple living.  With each new article, I became more and more interested in pursuing simplicity in my home and life.

What piqued my interest the most was discovering that minimalism and simple living lifestyle is different for everyone. Minimalism and simplicity are not about white walls and the bare essentials, but it is about intentionality . Seeking simplicity is simply about being purposeful with what you bring into your life.

While seeking to simplify your life is about so much more than your possessions, the truth remains that when we allow excess in our homes we become slaves to those possessions.  Excess possessions, create excess stress and takes an excessive amount of our time and finances.   I saw the truth of this, first hand.

Journey Toward Simplicity

With all I was learning about minimalism and simplifying my life, I was excited to start my journey towards simplicity. I knew that with my husband not being on board, I could not downsize everything, but I could simplify my own possessions and schedule.

Now, at this point, I don’t call myself a minimalist. Perhaps it is just a matter of semantics and my own personal associations with the word. Minimalist is a title that I associate with possessions.  I don’t want to be defined by my possessions, either the excess of or lack thereof.

If you look up the word minimalist in the dictionary, it is defined as being or offering no more than what is required or essential. This not what I am seeking. I love the personal touches in my home, family photos, candles, and diffusers add a warm and cozy feeling.

Now I do realize today, a minimalist has come to mean something very different from the dictionary definition. In fact, most would say that it means different things to different people and it looks different for each person.

The Minimalists.com defines minimalism as a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s important—so you can find happiness, fulfillment, and freedom.

This is the popular definition among those calling themselves minimalists. The truth is I really like this definition. Following this definition, I would indeed refer to myself as one seeking to live a minimalist lifestyle.

Nevertheless, for now, if I give myself a title, I want it to be a follower of Jesus, a wife and, a mom, those are the things that define my life and my values.

Today, I seek to pursue a simpler lifestyle, I am purposeful of what I allow in my home and in my life. I want to rid my life of the excess that interferes with what is truly important to me.

I am finding that it is not easy to change a lifetime of habits. My husband still does not share my desire to simplify all the things, so I plan to take my time, and do what I can, this will be a lifelong journey. My focus is on seeking less, so that I may have more, more of what truly brings value, not just to my life, but to the life of those around me. Choices that will help each day to be my favorite day.

I feel exactly the same , the hardest part for me was My sentimental items , but then as I read blogs about This I uickly realised that they r simply ‘things’ and My memories of my lovely Mum are still with me And always will be! It’s a hard but worthwhile journey And amazing how friends and family quickly pop on the Same boat lol! I’m sure your hubby will be onboard very soon , mine has just started when he realised how he Could make some money from selling his unwanted Items ! X

Yes Amanda, those sentimental items can be tough. But when we examine the emotions behind them it becomes easier. I think the problem comes when we attach sentiment to everything, when that happens they lose their specialness. I have a couple items that were my Mom’s because they trigger special memories and thoughts of her. Because I only keep a couple items, rather than lots of them, those couple items are very special. I am so glad to hear that your husband is starting to join you on your journey to simple living, that is awesome!

This article really resonates with me. When you were talking about your move, it sounds just like our move that we just did 5 months ago. My husband also does not feel the way I do about excess items. He thinks that if we have room in our house we should keep everything because we might need it some day. I have not pushed him to get rid of his stuff but I have tried to leaf by example with my own stuff. 4 months later he has afmitted to me that we have too much stuff and he has even reduced the clothes in his closet after seeing me reduce mine. So your husband might come around to once he sees the freedom it can bring. Thanks for this!

I absolutely loved your article! Two major things stood out to me: 1) Like DC mentioned, minimalism and simple living look very differently for each person. It’s only been a little over two weeks since I’ve been more intentional about reading different articles and blog posts about minimalism. Only last week did I start downsizing, beginning with my closet. Already it’s been quite an emotional and, in a sense, a spiritual adventure, but one that is allowing me to work more towards living a minimalist lifestyle rather than just being labeled as a minimalist due to my lack of possessions. Which leads me to my second point… 2) If you were to give yourself a title it would be follower of Jesus. I REALLY love that. I tend to get caught up in today’s trends, especially when it comes to making my life more organized, simple, yet current, that I can easily lose sight of the One whom I’m supposed to truly be following and reflecting in my life: Jesus. At 24, I strive to set patterns and habits in my life that are Christ-like in order to please Him and not the world. Although trends, such us minimalism, aren’t inherently bad in-and-of themselves, I do my best to never forget that, at the end of my life, I want my life to have been one filled with God more than anything or anyone else.

I like how you pointed out that minimalism and simple living is different for each person. It makes a lot of sense. The “clutter” in one person’s life is going to be different than the other person. For example someone may get 50 daily emails from various media outlets and companies, but someone else may have a different “clutter” issue that they can adjust to live a simpler life.

I am a bit older than you so my circumstances differ. Yet the first major “purge” as £ call it occurred in November of 2004. THE live of my life and father to our blended family of 5 children passed after lonely yet loving year of caregiving at home where he wanted to be. Our children were adults and the youngest two girls were out of state in college but we’re planning to live with their boyfriends after education was completed. AS they di and remain to this day. 26 years of accumulled STUFF from children, animals, my beloved husband as well as my love for everything Country and OLD………..??? Antiques . Our 8 room 1.5 bath, enormous attic 2 car garage , a large carpot, 3.5 acres and a small barn, we’re filled with so much STUFF. At the time I was a collector of country decor, geese, ducks, roosters, Americana, Raggedy Annes, Antique furniture, ice box, hutches, dry sink,lamps ,tables, precio us moments and each room had a theme. A sleigh and antique milk buggy were on the lawn and decorated for each holiday and season. New Enland suburbs of ciarse. I had acres of gardens and koi pond, boarded horses, had rabbits in a hutche, two large fish tanks, snake terrarium, bearded drago, and 2 dogs…Bijon and Shepherd. Furniture in attic if garage and years of every size clothing that had nit been passed on as well as items the children wanted to keep….key bosrds, full drum sets to name a few. It took me a year and 3 dumpsters to get rid of what no one would claim or remove plus a 3 day estate sale downsize and move to a tiny town home in Florida. I kept a roll top desk….first peice of furnitue my husband bought me and a chaise that my husband used to rest on. Along with my new car and the basic necessities along with photographs and special moments from my family I started over. After living alone and having no one to blame but myself I accumulated more than I needed. Not an enormous excess but once again I wanted less stuff and more tI’m to live. I give most items to charities and women with children in residential treatment . The one constant has always been I am extremely organized and a cleaning freak. AT one point in my life we had a house keeper. She hated cleaning my home, the home I cleaned before she came, because she had to dust and work around all our neatly arranged belongings. Niw I spend most of my time trying to figure out how to have the most floor space and comfortable seating . I keep things that I love no matter the color size or design because I want to surround myself with things that make me happy. WHEN I am happy others around me benifit the most. I current remove at least 2 major items a month for either donation or bulk pick up. And take clothes to get rid of werkly. Every time I deep clean I get rid of more. I still love to garden and have all the supplies I need but only one of every item. Getting rid of duplicates throughout the home really does help. I have a supply of art materials in almost every medium. That is all neetly arranged in baskets and neatly on shelves .

To day I live a life of simple abundance with my maltese Tiffany. Thankyou for your article it made me realize how far I have come and how content and dulled I am with my life I now have 8 Grandchildren and my down sized life style allows me the ability to go and visit them and enjoy life clutter free.

Simplicity Is Essentially a State of Mind

This article contributes to the debate, “ Why We Yearn for the Simple Life “

Simplicity is an elastic term that can mean just about anything. Consider Andrew Carnegie, the steel magnate and robber baron who by the early 20th century was the richest man in the world. In retirement, Carnegie dedicated himself to philanthropy while living what he described as a simple life—much of which he spent in his Scottish castle surrounded by 32,000 acres. While his castle was a far cry from today’s tiny house movement, Carnegie genuinely thought he was practicing a simple life of salmon fishing, golf, and sailing.

Everything is relative, especially simplicity—there is no guidebook or checklist to follow. Throughout American history, various groups have had quite different views about how and why one should embrace a simpler life. In the late 18th century, America’s founders called for citizens to curb their selfish passions in order to sustain the world’s largest republic. (There was considerable irony in this, as Thomas Jefferson’s simple life, for example, was enabled by a battalion of enslaved workers.) During the 19th century, promoters of a simpler life rhapsodized more about living in harmony with nature than about following religious mandates or the protocols of civic virtue. Quakers and the Amish, among others, profess pietistic simplicity to ensure that their lives revolve around their faith, not their goods. Other advocates of simplicity over the years have displayed a similar range of motives and methods, ironies and hypocrisies.

The elusive ideal of simple living exercises a persistent appeal because people, even in this techno-crazy 21st century, continue to want more from life than going ever faster and buying more things. For all of its virtues, however, simplicity remains a devilishly hard way of life because it flies in the face of modern materialism. Like David battling Goliath, those who seek simplicity war against a dominant consumer culture that barrages us daily with seductive wares and beguiling promises.

Fortunately, simplicity demands neither an end to economic growth nor a vow of personal poverty. A simpler life’s basic requirement is not a rural homestead or a monastic regimen, for simplicity is fundamentally a state of mind rather than a particular standard of living. Money, possessions, and activities in and of themselves do not corrupt simplicity; it is the love of money, the addiction to possessions, and the lure of conformity that corrode our ideals. Consumer goods are like food; everyone needs some, but there’s a subtle tipping point in our devotion beyond which consumerism can degrade our pursuit of happiness.

Committing to simplicity means engaging in a deliberate, daily ordering of priorities so as to distinguish between what is necessary and superfluous, useful and wasteful, beautiful and vulgar. Simplicity-minded consumers interrogate their motives for wanting something new, better, or bigger, and they learn to say no to indulgence—with grace.  

Those who are eager to move out of the fast lane must chart their own path to simplicity because each of us starts from a different place. Those who choose a simpler life—even Carnegie—discover that pressures are reduced, the frenetic pace is slowed, and “higher” priorities are established and sustained. Liberating oneself from the addiction of money-making and the anxieties of status-seeking can promote inner peace and prosperity of spirit. The more we simplify, the more abundant our lives become in those areas that really matter: family, community, personhood, and spirituality.

David E. Shi sacrificed simplicity to serve as president of South Carolina’s Furman University from 1994 to 2010. He is an American intellectual historian who has published two books about simplicity in the American experience: The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture and In Search of the Simple Life: American Voices, Past and Present . He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1976. Shi is also a co-author (with George Brown Tindall) of the best-selling book America: A Narrative History , now in its 10th edition, and is at work on a cultural history of loneliness.

In a world characterized by rapid technological advancements , intricate complexities , and an ever-growing array of options , the concept of simplicity stands out as a timeless beacon of elegance and wisdom . "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication," encapsulates a profound truth that transcends time and resonates with the essence of human nature . This essay explores the multifaceted significance of simplicity, delving into its manifestations across various aspects of life and its enduring impact on individuals, societies, and even creativity.  

At first glance, simplicity may appear as a mere absence of complexity, a surface-level reduction of elements. However, true simplicity is an art form that involves distilling the essence of an idea, object, or concept to its purest and most fundamental form. This stripping away of unnecessary embellishments reveals a sense of elegance that is deeply appealing and enduring .   

Ironically, embracing simplicity often requires an appreciation for complexity . The capacity to distinguish the crucial elements amidst a complex array showcases a depth of comprehension that stands as a defining trait of sophistication. Take, for instance, the art of storytelling . A well-crafted narrative weaves together a tapestry of characters, plotlines, and emotions, yet the true mastery lies in conveying this complexity to the audience in a coherent and simple manner .   

Simplicity extends beyond aesthetics and intellectual pursuits ; it is deeply intertwined with human character and values. In an era where material possessions and societal status often define success, a person who embraces simplicity stands out as a beacon of authenticity and self-awareness . Mahatma Gandhi's minimalist lifestyle , driven by his commitment to truth and non-materialism , exemplifies how simplicity can become a powerful statement of one's principles. It reflects a conscious choice to rise above the superficial and prioritize what truly matters be it personal relationships, ethical values, or the pursuit of knowledge.  

In an age of environmental challenges , simplicity takes on a new dimension as a sustainable way of life. The consumerist culture of excess has led to overconsumption , depletion of resources , and environmental degradation . Embracing simplicity in our consumption patterns, choosing quality over quantity, favoring durable goods over disposables  contributes not only to personal well-being but also to the larger goal of preserving the planet for future generations. The concept of minimalism , which encourages mindful consumption and reduction of waste , aligns seamlessly with the principles of sustainability.  

Simplicity can serve as a catalyst for boundless creativity. When the mind is unburdened by unnecessary complexities, it gains the freedom to explore, innovate, and create .   

Effective communication is often rooted in simplicity . Whether conveying complex scientific concepts to a broad audience or crafting a persuasive argument, the ability to distill information into clear and concise messages is a skill of profound sophistication . Think of the eloquence of Martin Luther King Jr.'s " I Have a Dream" speech; its power lies in its simplicity , enabling it to resonate across generations and inspire social change.   

Cultivating simplicity requires a conscious and deliberate effort, particularly in a world that bombards us with distractions and excesses . Mindfulness practices , such as meditation and minimalism, offer pathways to embracing simplicity in our lives. By decluttering our physical spaces, streamlining our routines , and nurturing meaningful connections , we can create an environment conducive to clarity of thought and a deeper appreciation for the beauty in simplicity.  

In this complex world, the idea that "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" stands out as a timeless and universal principle. It means that keeping things simple is really smart , even though it might seem basic. When we understand and embrace simplicity, it brings a lot of good things. It makes things more beautiful and easier to understand. It also helps us be better people, take better care of the Earth , and be more creative . This simple approach to life has a big and positive impact .  

Remember, simple doesn't mean going back in time . It's not about being old-fashioned . Instead, it's a path to the true heart of being smart and sophisticated. In various contexts, "simplicity" can mean different things. Simplicity refers to a minimalist and uncluttered approach . It involves using only essential elements to achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing result. The "less is more" principle is often associated with simplicity.  

Embracing simplicity as a lifestyle involves focusing on what truly matters , reducing clutter, and minimizing material possessions . It often emphasizes experiences, relationships, and personal well-being over excessive consumption. Simplicity can be user-friendly interfaces , intuitive designs , and streamlined processes that make it easy for users to interact with devices or software as per technology is concerned.  

Philosophical simplicity involves seeking fundamental truths and principles without unnecessary complications. It can be seen as a pursuit of clarity and understanding through basic concepts. Nature often exemplifies simplicity through its efficient and elegant solutions to complex challenges . Natural systems often operate with remarkable simplicity and effectiveness.  

Sophistication refers to the quality or state of being sophisticated . It generally describes a level of refinement , complexity , or elegance in a person , object, process, or idea. When something is sophisticated, it often implies that it has been developed, designed, or executed with a high degree of skill, knowledge, or taste. In various contexts, "sophistication" can mean different things. When referring to a person, sophistication can describe an individual's cultivated and refined manners , tastes, and behaviors. A sophisticated person is often seen as knowledgeable and cultured.   

In technology, a sophisticated system or device is one that is intricate, advanced, and capable of performing complex tasks. It could refer to intricate patterns or details in design .  In finance and economics , sophistication might refer to complex financial instruments or investment strategies that require a deep understanding of markets and economics. Sophistication can also be related to the complexity and depth of language usage, ideas, or arguments. A sophisticated piece of writing , for example, might involve intricate language and well-developed concepts .  

In the context of fashion, sophistication can describe stylish and elegant clothing choices or overall lifestyle choices that reflect refined tastes. In the culinary world, sophistication can refer to dishes or cooking techniques that are intricate, refined , and often involve a blend of flavors and textures.  It's important to note that the concept of sophistication can be subjective and culturally dependent. What is considered sophisticated in one context or culture might differ in another.   

Both simplicity and sophistication have cultural and subjective aspects , with their interpretations varying across contexts and societies. While simplicity seeks to eliminate unnecessary elements, sophistication embraces intricacy and depth, showcasing the diversity of human expression and understanding.

Growing up in the child welfare system, my life was filled with uncertainties. I entered care at nine due to circumstances beyond my control, and from that moment, my path took a detour from the usual route. while I faced many challenges growing up – one of the biggest accessing higher education. I knew I wanted to continue my education, but it felt like an impossible dream.

Education: A Beacon of Hope in the Child Welfare System

Education has always been close to my heart, but for many youth from care, the barriers to achieving a post-secondary education are immense. When I think back to my journey, I realize how crucial education was in shaping who I am today. It wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was about breaking a cycle of poverty and finding a path to stability and success.

In Ontario, only about 27% of youth from care pursue post-secondary education—half the rate of the general population. This is a stark reality, especially considering the financial burdens we face. The cost of attending a post-secondary institution in Canada is currently estimated at $35,000 per year, with 77% of that cost attributed to living expenses like rent, food, and transit. For youth who age out of care without family support, these expenses can be overwhelming.

I was fortunate to receive financial support from Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada through scholarships and bursaries. This support eased the financial stress and allowed me to focus on my studies. It also gave me the opportunity to build a social life and grow as a person. But the importance of this support goes beyond just covering costs—it was a lifeline that empowered me to succeed.

The Power of Mentorship and Community

Beyond financial support, the mentorship and guidance I received was game-changing. Being surrounded by mentors, professors, and peers who believed in me made all the difference. It’s why I now work as a research specialist and serve as a mentor in my community. I want to be that example for others—showing them that success is possible, no matter where you start.

As a young Black man, I’ve always been aware of the importance of representation. My achievements in education and my career are not just personal victories; they’re examples of Black excellence and resilience. I’m proud to be a role model, to show others that they can overcome the obstacles in their path and achieve greatness.

I’m excited to share that Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada has released a Focus on Education report. This report sheds light on the challenges youth from care face in accessing post-secondary education and highlights some surprising statistics.

The report also includes insights from experts in the child welfare and education field, reinforcing that equitable access to post-secondary education is one of the most critical ways to help youth from care build meaningful careers, long-term stability, and a brighter future.

Since 1995, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s Post-Secondary Education program has provided $24.4 million in scholarships, bursaries, and graduation awards to over 8,000 students. This support is a key factor in helping students like me overcome financial barriers and pursue higher education, creating pathways to success.
