What is a Business Model Canvas

A business model is simply a plan describing how a business intends to make money. It explains who your customer base is and how you deliver value to them and the related details of financing. And the business model canvas lets you define these different components on a single page.   

The Business Model Canvas is a strategic management tool that lets you visualize and assess your business idea or concept. It’s a one-page document containing nine boxes that represent different fundamental elements of a business.  

The business model canvas beats the traditional business plan that spans across several pages, by offering a much easier way to understand the different core elements of a business.

The right side of the canvas focuses on the customer or the market (external factors that are not under your control) while the left side of the canvas focuses on the business (internal factors that are mostly under your control). In the middle, you get the value propositions that represent the exchange of value between your business and your customers.

The business model canvas was originally developed by Alex Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur and introduced in their book ‘ Business Model Generation ’ as a visual framework for planning, developing and testing the business model(s) of an organization.

How to Make a Business Model Canvas

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create a business canvas model.

Step 1: Gather your team and the required material Bring a team or a group of people from your company together to collaborate. It is better to bring in a diverse group to cover all aspects.

What are the Key Building Blocks of the Business Model Canvas?

There are nine building blocks in the business model canvas and they are:

Customer Segments

Customer relationships, revenue streams, key activities, key resources, key partners, cost structure.

  • Value Proposition

When filling out a Business Model Canvas, you will brainstorm and conduct research on each of these elements. The data you collect can be placed in each relevant section of the canvas. So have a business model canvas ready when you start the exercise.

These are the groups of people or companies that you are trying to target and sell your product or service to.

Segmenting your customers based on similarities such as geographical area, gender, age, behaviors, interests, etc. gives you the opportunity to better serve their needs, specifically by customizing the solution you are providing them.

After a thorough analysis of your customer segments, you can determine who you should serve and ignore. Then create customer personas for each of the selected customer segments.

There are different customer segments a business model can target and they are;

  • Mass market: A business model that focuses on mass markets doesn’t group its customers into segments. Instead, it focuses on the general population or a large group of people with similar needs. For example, a product like a phone.  
  • Niche market: Here the focus is centered on a specific group of people with unique needs and traits. Here the value propositions, distribution channels, and customer relationships should be customized to meet their specific requirements. An example would be buyers of sports shoes.
  • Segmented: Based on slightly different needs, there could be different groups within the main customer segment. Accordingly, you can create different value propositions, distribution channels, etc. to meet the different needs of these segments.
  • Diversified: A diversified market segment includes customers with very different needs.
  • Multi-sided markets: this includes interdependent customer segments. For example, a credit card company caters to both their credit card holders as well as merchants who accept those cards.

In this section, you need to establish the type of relationship you will have with each of your customer segments or how you will interact with them throughout their journey with your company.

There are several types of customer relationships

  • Personal assistance: you interact with the customer in person or by email, through phone call or other means.
  • Dedicated personal assistance: you assign a dedicated customer representative to an individual customer.  
  • Self-service: here you maintain no relationship with the customer, but provides what the customer needs to help themselves.
  • Automated services: this includes automated processes or machinery that helps customers perform services themselves.
  • Communities: these include online communities where customers can help each other solve their own problems with regard to the product or service.
  • Co-creation: here the company allows the customer to get involved in the designing or development of the product. For example, YouTube has given its users the opportunity to create content for its audience.

You can understand the kind of relationship your customer has with your company through a customer journey map . It will help you identify the different stages your customers go through when interacting with your company. And it will help you make sense of how to acquire, retain and grow your customers.

This block is to describe how your company will communicate with and reach out to your customers. Channels are the touchpoints that let your customers connect with your company.

Channels play a role in raising awareness of your product or service among customers and delivering your value propositions to them. Channels can also be used to allow customers the avenue to buy products or services and offer post-purchase support.

There are two types of channels

  • Owned channels: company website, social media sites, in-house sales, etc.
  • Partner channels: partner-owned websites, wholesale distribution, retail, etc.

Revenues streams are the sources from which a company generates money by selling their product or service to the customers. And in this block, you should describe how you will earn revenue from your value propositions.  

A revenue stream can belong to one of the following revenue models,

  • Transaction-based revenue: made from customers who make a one-time payment
  • Recurring revenue: made from ongoing payments for continuing services or post-sale services

There are several ways you can generate revenue from

  • Asset sales: by selling the rights of ownership for a product to a buyer
  • Usage fee: by charging the customer for the use of its product or service
  • Subscription fee: by charging the customer for using its product regularly and consistently
  • Lending/ leasing/ renting: the customer pays to get exclusive rights to use an asset for a fixed period of time
  • Licensing: customer pays to get permission to use the company’s intellectual property
  • Brokerage fees: revenue generated by acting as an intermediary between two or more parties
  • Advertising: by charging the customer to advertise a product, service or brand using company platforms

What are the activities/ tasks that need to be completed to fulfill your business purpose? In this section, you should list down all the key activities you need to do to make your business model work.

These key activities should focus on fulfilling its value proposition, reaching customer segments and maintaining customer relationships, and generating revenue.

There are 3 categories of key activities;

  • Production: designing, manufacturing and delivering a product in significant quantities and/ or of superior quality.
  • Problem-solving: finding new solutions to individual problems faced by customers.
  • Platform/ network: Creating and maintaining platforms. For example, Microsoft provides a reliable operating system to support third-party software products.

This is where you list down which key resources or the main inputs you need to carry out your key activities in order to create your value proposition.

There are several types of key resources and they are

  • Human (employees)
  • Financial (cash, lines of credit, etc.)
  • Intellectual (brand, patents, IP, copyright)
  • Physical (equipment, inventory, buildings)

Key partners are the external companies or suppliers that will help you carry out your key activities. These partnerships are forged in oder to reduce risks and acquire resources.

Types of partnerships are

  • Strategic alliance: partnership between non-competitors
  • Coopetition: strategic partnership between partners
  • Joint ventures: partners developing a new business
  • Buyer-supplier relationships: ensure reliable supplies

In this block, you identify all the costs associated with operating your business model.

You’ll need to focus on evaluating the cost of creating and delivering your value propositions, creating revenue streams, and maintaining customer relationships. And this will be easier to do so once you have defined your key resources, activities, and partners.  

Businesses can either be cost-driven (focuses on minimizing costs whenever possible) and value-driven (focuses on providing maximum value to the customer).

Value Propositions

This is the building block that is at the heart of the business model canvas. And it represents your unique solution (product or service) for a problem faced by a customer segment, or that creates value for the customer segment.

A value proposition should be unique or should be different from that of your competitors. If you are offering a new product, it should be innovative and disruptive. And if you are offering a product that already exists in the market, it should stand out with new features and attributes.

Value propositions can be either quantitative (price and speed of service) or qualitative (customer experience or design).

What to Avoid When Creating a Business Model Canvas

One thing to remember when creating a business model canvas is that it is a concise and focused document. It is designed to capture key elements of a business model and, as such, should not include detailed information. Some of the items to avoid include,

  • Detailed financial projections such as revenue forecasts, cost breakdowns, and financial ratios. Revenue streams and cost structure should be represented at a high level, providing an overview rather than detailed projections.
  • Detailed operational processes such as standard operating procedures of a business. The BMC focuses on the strategic and conceptual aspects.
  • Comprehensive marketing or sales strategies. The business model canvas does not provide space for comprehensive marketing or sales strategies. These should be included in marketing or sales plans, which allow you to expand into more details.
  • Legal or regulatory details such as intellectual property, licensing agreements, or compliance requirements. As these require more detailed and specialized attention, they are better suited to be addressed in separate legal or regulatory documents.
  • Long-term strategic goals or vision statements. While the canvas helps to align the business model with the overall strategy, it should focus on the immediate and tangible aspects.
  • Irrelevant or unnecessary information that does not directly relate to the business model. Including extra or unnecessary information can clutter the BMC and make it less effective in communicating the core elements.

Key Partners

This refers to the partners that we do business with. They include ,Marantz, Phillips, Onkyo, Sonos, Samsung, Denon, WD, Boxee, Morpher and logitech.

Key Activities

This involves the main mission as to the existence of the company. Theses are the activities that give a company the meaning for its existence. The key activities for spotify are divided into three;

  • Production – This involves producing the music and distributing it to the customers and loading it up to their website.
  • Problem solving – Solving problems faced by customers by making use of qualified IT team. Making sure there is enough music in the system.
  • Platform management.

Value Propositions

This involves value delivered to customers.

Customer Relationship

This is the association between the company and its clients.

Customer Segments

This covers areas where customers are found in the market.

Key Resources

This refers to the resources that make up our value proposition and which will generate revenue and at the same time reduce costs. The resources aim at improving customer relationships and in the distribution of products.

This are the channels of distribution used to get to our customers. It involves using the channels that enable us reach our customers best and in the shortest time. The channel aims at;

  • Awareness – Creating awareness to customers about our products.
  • Evaluation – By allowing our customers to evaluate us by having questionnaires that give feedback on our products and services. And having a balance score card for our employees.
  • Purchase – These refers to the ease with which our customers can pay for our products which can be done through bankers cheque, credit cards, internet money transfer, money orders or in cash.
  • After sales service – Refers the support given to the customers after the purchase. This includes free delivery to their locations, installation, offering warranties and guaranties and doing regular check-ups (Spinellli, 2012).

Cost structure

This touches on the cost structure of our business and creating value for money.

Revenue streams

This refers to the income generated from the business. It involves ethical business practices by charging customers fairly. The customers can pay for this revenue streams through negotiated bargaining or buying in the real market prices.

Long tail business

This is a business model that focuses on selling a few products to a large number of clients. This is because the business is targeting a market that is not very profitable in terms of sales and targeting a specific market can be too costly (Pignerur, 2012). This business mode is working for Spotify because;

  • There is democratisation in the production of music in the industry. There is advanced technology that favours the company, and the technology was more costly years back. There are also cheap applications that enables customers download music and videos.
  • There is democratisation in the distribution process. This has been made possible through the internet where the distribution costs are low, the inventory is always available in the internet, there is little communication and transaction overheads and the internet has opened up the niche market
  • There is less costs of searching for the products in the market. This because Internet Service Providers (ISP) have lowered their costs. Therefore, it is easy for the niche market to get their products cheaply.
  • The cost of running the business is low and the company can have unlimited number of clients from the mass market. The company can as well subsidize its costs for its loyal customers (svathy, 2012).

The era of electronic commerce has existed since 1995. The computer revolution in the business world has since changed immensely with the introduction of Business-to-Business (B2B), Business-to-Consumer (B2C), Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) and m-commerce models. Majority of the business firms have adopted e-commerce in harnessing growth and development (Loudon & Traver, 2013). The current technology development has become an integral factor in improving business and market competitiveness.

However, e-commerce exists in different models such as the B2B, B2C, C2C and m-commerce. B2B business model involves transactions between businesses. For instance, a supplier is involved in a B2B when supplying to other individual businesses. Importantly, B2B is supported by Electronic Data Interchange (ED) technology. B2C business model involves firms selling directly to individual consumers. For example, retailers dealing with end consumers are an example of B2C business model.

Other business examples include travel services offered in the tourism industry. Online retailers, transaction brokers and market creators are exemplary models of B2C business. C2C is a business model that allows consumers sell to each other without involving retailers or wholesalers. C2C allows the consumer to place an item for sale on an online market without charges. Amazon and eBay are examples of online markets that facilitate C2C business model. M-commerce is the latest business model that utilizes mobile devices in conducting transactions.

M-commerce is a wireless mode of business where the use of laptops and smart phones connect to the web for transactions such as banking, stock trading and travel reservations. M-commerce is expected to outgrow other models of business in the future. The following research highlights examples of B2C, B2B, C2C and m-commerce business models. In addition, the research focuses on companies, products and services that do not subscribe to e-commerce, and how they can apply the same in conducting business.

Online retail stores are components of B2C models and are similar to bricks-and mortar businesses. Typically, online retail stores have physical subsidiaries and virtual stores. Barnes & Noble, Walmart and Staples are examples of companies that operate virtual and physical stores. However, there are companies that only operate in a virtual world. For example, Amazon, iTunes, Drugsore.com and eBay are typical e-tailers that use online mall and catalogs (Loudon & Traver, 2013).

Community providers like Facebook, LinkedIn, Well.com, iVillage, Fool.com and Twitter are renowned for their social connection services. Community providers provide an online platform for business to share information on products and services they intend to sell. Sharing of video, pictures and information regarding products and services is a common characteristic of community providers. Another example of B2C model is content providers that trade on information.

In any case, content providers deal in intellectual property, distribution of information, video, music and text using the web as a marketplace. Trading of e-books, online journals and magazines, are also a within the scope of content providers. Renowned content providers include WSJ.com, CNN.com and CBSSports.com. B2C business model incorporates the use of portals or search engines like Google, Yahoo, Ask.com and MSN in providing content and services (Loudon & Traver, 2013).

In most cases, consumers use portals as a gateway to search for their favorite products and services. Other prominent examples of business models associated with B2C model include service providers like Google Docs and Gmail, as well as transaction brokers like Ameritrade and Datek.

Business-to-Business (B2B) models are more prevalent than B2C commerce. As indicated earlier, B2B utilizes EDI technology to ensure transactions between suppliers and purchaser remain private and confidential (Loudon & Traver, 2013). Examples of models that suit B2B business include the e-distributor, where companies utilize online catalogues to display their items. Grainger.com is a renowned e-distributor with online catalogs used to access and provide information of over 1 million items.

E-procurement firms like Ariba use customized software and integrated online catalogs that organize procurement procedures for vendors. The customized software and integrated online catalogs integrate additional information on services such as shipping, insurance and finance. In this context, e-procurement software is an integral element of value chain management. E-procurement software service providers earn money by charging transaction or annual licensing fees (Loudon & Traver, 2013).

C2C business models do not involve other business parties other than individual consumers. However, business between individual consumers qualifies to be e-commerce when it is electronically-facilitated. Online auction is an example model of B2B commerce, where individual consumers list their items for sale in an internet-based company such as eBay (Loudon & Traver, 2013).

Online classified advertising sites, as well as online retailers also support C2C businesses. In this regard, Craigslist and Amazon are renowned online classified advertising site and online retailer that support C2C respectively.

M-commerce is the recent e-business model entry since the inception of mobile devices. M-commerce models empower businesses and individuals to use their mobile phones, tablets and laptops in conducting transactions such as purchasing, payment and banking (Loudon & Traver, 2013). Mobile money transfer is a renowned m-commerce concept where hand gadgets are used to transfer money between businesses, customers, institutions and individuals.

M-PESA and Zap are renowned money transfer services provided by Safaricom and Airtel companies in Kenya (Kendall, Maurer, Machoka & Veniard, 2011). Mobile ATM business models allow bank customers to access banking services using their mobile phones. Vodafone is an example of a mobile service provider that allows Hungarian Citizens to make bank payments and pay bills using mobile phones at an ATM machine.

Mobile browsing allows individual consumers to access content over the internet using internet-enabled hand gadgets. Mobile purchasing allows individual customers to access online catalogs from businesses and make an order electronically. However, businesses develop customized mobile websites that allow consumers to navigate using a mobile device. Additional services supported by m-commerce include marketing, advertising, brokerage and payment services.

There exist renowned mobile applications that have proven the effectiveness of m-commerce. The Starbucks mobile application is a household name in the United States (Kaplan, 2012). Coffee consumers use the mobile application in paying for their drinks. The McDonald’s Sverige is a mobile application available in Sweden and is reliable for online purchases and delivery payments (Svensson, 2009). REI retail store has mobile application which is renowned in outdoor clothing and gear industry (Duffy, 2004).

The application allows customers to view products online and give a feedback about the items or services provided. The application is integrated with online social media like Facebook and twitter to provide customers with regular updates about new products, services and price adjustments.

Pickering Lumber Company in East Texas is a renowned local timber milling business (Johnson & Gerland, 1996). However, the company still utilizes conventional business practices. In this context, the company assumes that its popularity within the state is enough to maintain its market competitiveness. In any case, the company does not utilize a B2C business model as expected through electronic media.

The company can utilize a website to market its products and services among its target customers. The company can develop a website portal where customers can make order inquiries, as well as product information. Sharing information through content providers is important to customers who want to learn more about the company’s products and services.

McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) business do not utilize B2B models. It is important to note that a B2B lengthens the chain of distribution especially if the commodity traded has a short expiry date. In addition, lengthening the chain of distribution has costs implication to the end consumer and market.

However, McDonald’s and KFC can use B2B models to ease the mode of transactions between the companies and suppliers. In this context, using EDI technology to make instant payments to suppliers is integral in improving the value chain (Monczka, Handfield, Giunipero & Patterson, 2008). B2B model like the e-distributor can help McDonalds or KFC in accessing distant customers who want to have information about the companies’ products and services.

Technical products such as start-up software and hardware are difficult to sell through B2C models. In any case, technical products that are newly developed require much research and market demonstrations. However, integrating a Business-to-Developer (B2D) model with B2C would ensure that the customer gets relevant information from a reliable third party. In this context, the developer’s websites and other media platforms will be used to ensure that the customer gets the relevant information about the products.

Selling of vehicles through B2C business model is difficult and has not been realized in recent years. In any given case, companies prefer selling the product through another business fraternity. Intellectual properties cannot be traded through C2C models. In fact, this requires facilitation from a legal office which is not possible through the internet. Stock market shares are sensitive products that cannot be traded through the internet or social media. However, with the increasing development of software, it is possible to create online portals where confidentiality of trading with intellectual properties of stock market shares is facilitated privately.

Nevertheless, this requires the development of secure portals that include virtual contribution of a legal office either through online forms and provision of terms and conditions required in trading of intellectual property or stock.

Currently, products like motor vehicles do not subscribe to m-commerce models. In this context, the mentioned products are technical and require well documented transactions to ensure that quality aspects are observed. In addition, almost every technical product cannot be transacted through a mobile phone since the gadget may not handle the required item descriptions. From this perspective, trading of motor vehicles requires special mobile applications that incorporate item description once a customer tries to download the information.

In addition, intellectual properties are not sold through mobile applications. However, development of customized mobile applications that allow communication between customers and the owner can effectively support m-commerce. Healthcare products are currently not traded through m-commerce models. From this perspective, the industry tries to safeguard ethical consideration required in selling of healthcare products.

However, licensed pharmaceutical companies liaison with medical facilities ensures that clients get the prescribed drugs. A special mobile application that networks a pharmaceutical business, medical facility and the client ensures that an order from the latter is medically certified by an expert.

Services such as customer portal licensing do not involve a B2C model. Apparently, such kinds of services are expensive since a customer is charged per login to the system. However, customization of the portal system can be conducted to ensure that customers are charged subscription fees allowing them to navigate through the portal for maximum utilization. In addition, healthcare services cannot be traded between individual customers unless one of them is a medical professional. However, for this service to be considered legal, the C2C model must verify details of the services provided. Healthcare services cannot be accessed through mobile devices especially if the service requires prescription of drugs and laboratory tests. In this regard, m-commerce can only support medical consultation services through a legally and medically verified mobile application.

The emergence of e-commerce is notably one of the greatest innovations of modern times. E-commerce has revolutionized business practices by effectively addressing issues of cost, reliability and market competitiveness. Today, businesses are quickly adapting to B2C, B2B, C2C and m-commerce models as a conformity to modern business practices. Apparently, companies, products and services that used conventional business practices can now subscribe to new models as a matter of necessity.

Business Models and strategies

Ecommerce refers to a business model where the activities of the business are conducted electronically via the internet. There are various types of eCommerce as indicated below:

Business -to- Business (B2B)

This type of eCommerce refers to an electronic business activity whereby companies transact business activities with each other (Harvey Norman warms 2011). An example of such business is www.alibaba.com, where wholesalers sell their goods to retailers. For a B2B eCommerce to be effective, business models such as brokerage must be taken into consideration. In this case, brokers become the market- builders for a commission in return.

Business- to- consumer (B2C)

This kind of eCommerce involves businesses and consumers. Through electronic systems, businesses are able to sell goods and provide services to the general public (Harvey Norman’s new website 2011). A good example of a B2C business is Amazon where businesses sell goods to consumers. Manufacturers can use a manufactures’ model if they want to supply directly to the consumers since the model aims at compressing the distribution channel.

Consumer- to- consumer (C2C)

This kind of eCommerce refers to a situation whereby consumers sell goods to other consumers electronically via sites offering classifieds, forums, and auctions for free. An example of a C2C kind of eCommerce is eBay where consumers post their goods free for sale. For a C2C e-commerce brokerage model is inevitable. This is so because consumers need someone to come in and incur the cost of bringing them together (Harvey Norman reveals 2011). Other business models that could be useful for C2C include the advertising model, community model, subscription model, and utility model.

Consumer- to- business (C2B)

This refers to consumers posting individual or group projects giving a clear indication of a budget constraint. Within a few hours, companies can review the requirements of the consumer and bid on the posted projects. A good example of such eCommerce is www.elance.com, where freelancers all over the world provide their services via the platform. Without the brokerage model in C2B, this kind of eCommerce would not be possible. Consumers need the means to pass their message to potential companies and this can only be possible through the brokerage model (Five things Gerry Harvey 2011).

System Building- processes, tasks, and techniques

A reach picture model refers to a diagrammatic representation of the stakeholders in a company, their concerns, and a number of structures in a work context. Rich picture diagrams can be used to affirm the findings of an observation thereby being used as evidence for the final report. In order to come up with a rich picture, model one has to visualize the model (Harvey Norman reveals 2011). This aids the viewer’s understanding and imagination. Below is a rich picture model of freelancers’ websites. The website is a consumer- to- business e-commerce where consumers post projects and companies submit their proposals.

The key stakeholders from the rich picture diagram above are elanced, consumer, PayPal, and freelancing companies. Elance act as the brokerage model linking the consumers and the freelancing companies for a commission (normally 8.75% of the total cost of the project). Freelancing companies are registered on the website free of charge. They are then required to file up their payment details and personal information once their accounts are activated.

Consumers are also required to follow the same procedure as the freelancer and thereafter they can post their project details and start reviewing the project proposals. Once a consumer selects a freelancer, he or she is expected to escrow the funds for the proposal via PayPal. Elance then releases the funds to the freelancing company less their commission once the consumer is satisfied that the project is completed to his satisfaction.

Rich picture diagrams are advantageous in that they do not require expertise to draw them. However, they can be complex to understand if the situation in hand involves a complex environment such as online business (Lau 2006). The rich picture diagram above is an indication of complex eCommerce businesses that involve customers and buyers all over the world. Ecommerce is a global market that has untapped potential. More individuals are joining the online business, sharing business ideas, and increasing competition among businesses.

Business and I.T Strategies

There are five aspects that must be looked into in order to understand the kind of competition within an eCommerce environment. These aspects include the threat of new market entrants, degree, and nature of the competitive rivalry, customers’ bargaining power, suppliers’ bargaining power, and competition brought about by a substitute product (Bonera 2011). Without these five key factors, one can never understand the intensity of rivalry within the eCommerce industry.

Newmarket entrants are a threat to businesses in the eCommerce world. If new entrants join the industry, they are likely to dominate a share of the market. This will lead to intensified rivalry and thereby reducing the profit margins due to competition. The bargaining power of suppliers is also a key factor that must be looked into when it comes to internet business. If suppliers exercise their bargaining power, they are more likely to sell their products at higher prices thereby squeezing profits earned via eCommerce.

The bargaining power of customers is also an important aspect to be considered when doing online business. Online business involves stakeholders all over the world. There are numerous suppliers of a particular product or service and each supplier sells his products at his own convenient price. This makes customers be more powerful as they are spoilt for choice. This also gives customers an opportunity to dictate the prices for goods and services. If the customers are powerful, they will be able to pull down the prices for goods and services.

Ecommerce is a growing business trend. New and efficient products are being sold via an electronic business portal. Products that meet the same needs as old products are made readily available to consumers via the internet. With such substitutes being provided in the eCommerce market, prices of goods sold online are likely to drop due to competition. This will in turn reduce the profit margins for companies engaging in eCommerce.

Given that online business engages business participants all over the world, competitive rivalry is likely to be intense. This will lead to price wars and in turn price reduction. Competitive rivalry in eCommerce is also likely to bring about investment in new products and innovation in order to cope with the stiff competition.

The online business is fast-growing with new ideas and trends emerging to conquer the market. Consumers are beginning to trust online transactions thereby increasing the revenue collected from e-commerce related activities. With internet providers working hard to enable consumers to access the internet from the comfort of their homes, more consumers are likely to join the online market. This will give the businesses that have already taken advantage of e-commerce an opportunity to increase their sales revenue. More secure and efficient payment systems are also likely to be set up to reduce the cost of transactions and also reduce the incidences of fraud.

With I.T, online business is likely to become efficient as technology is more likely to reduce paperwork and depending on digital databases to store crucial business information (Kinder, 2002). Information technology also allows businesses to connect easily regardless of the distance. Such communication systems reduce the time and cost that would have otherwise been wasted if the traditional communication methods were to be used.

Systems Analysis Techniques and Tools

A use case diagram has three main components as indicated in the diagram above. These include; an actor (1), a use case (2), and a system (4). An actor refers to a group of persons with a common objective, devices, or organizations that interact with the main system (Website). As for a use case, it refers to actions that are usually accomplished by an actor in pursuit of a particular goal. A system refers to whatever that has been developed. In order for the use case to be effective, there must be associations (3). These are indicated by straight lines. In order for an association to exist, there must be an actor that relates to the system described through a use case.

From the use case diagram, it is visible that the website acts as a brokerage model. Through the website, customers are able to transact with freelancers thereby being able to increase their sales (Xing, 2001). Through the website, customers are also able to view the price quotes for specific projects hence making them able to set their own project prices. The use case diagram also shows that only the customer can post the project. The website allows customer-freelancer communication to allow them to effectively deliver on each partner’s end of the bargain.

Ecommerce is a business industry that is growing at an alarming rate. New businesses are coming up and taking advantage of the untapped online market. Even with this untapped market, businesses are faced with various challenges regarding eCommerce. One such challenge is trust; most consumers still do not trust online businesses and this acts as a hindrance to the already set up websites. Another challenge that is faced by internet businesses is the fact that they need to work on-site SEO (McCarthy, William & Pascale 1997).

This is an inbound marketing strategy that is used by online businesses to drive traffic to their sites. Most internet business owners do not understand this marketing tactic and this makes their sites to be placed at the bottom of the search engine result page. Business owners can also increase traffic to their sites by taking advantage of social media. If these businesses do not know how to maximize the potential of social media, then they are likely to find online competition to be unfavorable. It is therefore important for business owners to keep updating themselves on upcoming online business trends.

We have big problems with transport because there are too much cars in our country. I’ve heard about tradition of one country. They don’t go anywhere by car one day a month or a year, they just use bycicle or their feet. I think it could be very good if we had a tradition like that.

So, what about the rivers and the seas? Yeah, there are some really good and clean rivers and seas where you can go, but there are not many of them. Once I saw the river OB in my city, it was about two years ago but I stil remember that in some places it was not blue, it was green or purple I didn’t really understand because it had different colours.

I don’t know what should we do. Maybe we should just open our eyes and look what we did. But Russian people don’t care about the world around them many people care only about themselves an that’s all.

So, the best idea is look around and try to do something good for our planet and for us and our children.

If a country decided to live isolated from the rest of the world, living on what it can naturally grow and produce, it surely wouldn’t be highly polluted. But we all want exotic food and technological items from all over the world, so we have to pay the price.

Investing on electrical transport would benefit the environment a lot. Even more if this electricity came from a natural source of energy like wind, rivers and solar boards. It’s difficult to achieve this because petrol companies will fight against these actions.

We also have to take care of our rivers and seas. We all have heard about factories throwing highly toxic substances to rivers, without minimizing their poisoning effects. A really strict law should be applied to fine these factories and make them change their policy.

But what about ourselves? We also can do a lot! If, when possible, we bought larger packs of food, we would be producing less rubbish. And this is only an example!

In the other hand, the fashion industry guide the people to be in a good appearance, because, nowadays, the appearance of the person is more important than the person itself.

In my opinion, the fashion industry doesn’t has a bad influence on people’s lives. It’s something which was created to help people what to wear.

On the other hand, the fashion industry in some people opinion, controls the market of clothes and because of that they can’t wear what they want to. In addition, the industry can increase the price of clothes, forcing people who don’t want to be “oldfashioned” to buy and pay a large amount of money to keep “beautiful”.

In my opinion, we can’t let the fashion industry decide what we must or musn’t wear. We shouldn’t judge people for its appearance,because that is not important. We must wear whatever we like, want and feel confortable with.

Furthermore, such profitable business is also believed to be able to spread and make known the culture of a people, encouraging and enhancing a better understanding of each other.

Nevertheless, for those who are neither impressed nor motivated by numbers and figures, the fashion industry is seen as one which segregates people, isolating those who not fit their laws and commands. It is stated that people place too much importance on appearance and the material, world, sadly true, and the fashion industry just spurs on such situation. Moreover, not only are the costs of fashion item unrealistically high, it is thought to be a money better spent on more pressing issues, such as poverty and hunger.

I do believe that the fashion industry, as it is today, has a harmful effect, because it values a minority of people in detriment to the majority. However, it has such a wide reach that, it put into a good use, it can save lives.

Secondly, we have people who do it simply to challenge themselves. Truly I believe that having a great outcome that stems from your hard work and dedication to learn something new is a wonderful way to challenge prove your ability to yourself and others. Then there is travelling. It is very important to be able to understand and have a conversation with someone abroad, unless you would like to get lost or worse.

To conclude, I think that learning a new language is an amazing thing no matter why you do it. It is always better to do things out of enjoyment, but even if you do it for a test, that knowledge will always be useful.

Learning a a foreign languages is very important nowadays. English, in particular, is essential because it allows is spoken all over the world. That’s the reason why we start studying it from the age of six years old. Going abroad and being able to speak to native people is very satisfying and that’s why I want to improve my knowledge about foreign languages.

I decided to take this exam to know how high my level of English is, but also because I need this certification to go abroad next summer. I really want to come back to Cornwall, an amazing region in the South-West of England. I’ve been there twice with my family, but now I want to go alone. Only being there to England I can really improve my English comprehension and speaking skills.

Fortunately I can will have some English lessons which taught in English at university and I can’t wait for it because it will be an interesting challenge for me. Studying foreign languages is essential to live and to travel. It isn’t simple and I surely have to challenge myself everyday, but the result is so satisfying that we I can’t do without it.

In addition, it is very important that we never forget about our past since we must know where we were standing years ago. Moreover, there are some things, such as World War II, that we have to remember to prevent them from happening again. All in all, I think that it is extremely important to learn about one’s own country’s history. Anyone who gets the chance to do this should not waste it, since they are very fortunate to have this opportunity

Introduction

A health care system has two types of models in practice including; the traditional model and dispersed model. In particular, the traditional model employed in a health care setting involves primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care of patients. In that, a patient goes to primary care and receives treatment of the common problems diagnosed. The problems that go unsolved are referred to the secondary care, and the tertiary care is for those cases that require intensive care provision. The knack to communicate ideas and information successfully is increasingly acknowledged as critical to the success of the health care system in general. For successful interactions between the health care providers and individuals but also in particular the health care providers themselves, effective communication is required. This function ensures an organization maintain productivity and efficiency. The importance of inter-departmental communication enables the growth of trust, improves the quality of service to customers hence ascertaining repeat business. In addition, it boosts efficiency in attaining delivery projections, and departmental conflicts in an organization are minimized where there is ease in flow of information. Therefore, this paper aims at describing a health organization and its ineffectiveness in departmental sharing of information. Also to be illustrated are the proper assimilation sequence of the knowledge management model tools in the organization so as to improve on the limitations and increase efficiency of operation within. Extensively, the patient centered medical home and the Chronic Care Management are integrated in the acute care system and the hospital in regards to delivering chronic illness care. The current payment and delivery systems provide a wide range of tools in dealing with chronic disease’s problems. Equally, the current payment system favors the acute care platform and is the leading driver of costs in health care but minimal efforts have led to its strategic engagement in complex chronic illness management. The presence of chronic illness management through the inclusion of acute setting and it is so because in ideal situations, chronic illness patients are usually admitted to the hospital. As the number of chronic conditions of a person increases also there will be increases in hospitalization for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions, rates of inpatient hospitalization, and hospitalizations that are linked with costly and avoidable complications For the health care delivery system and the health of patients, hospitals need to be engaged with devised strategies that would assist them adopt new knowledge management models so as to minimize the inefficiencies created through limited information sharing. These barriers to the departmental information sharing are inclusive of;

Fragmented Communication

The particular transition time between care services can be of high risk specifically in the presence of poor information sharing and inadequate or lack of continuity of care. In inter-departmental care of acute care patients, inconsistency in information shared lead to ineffectiveness and poor service delivery to the chronic acute care patient hence severe incidences in patients even loss of lives might seem to occur. This would occur due to incompatible computer systems that are equally ineffective in disseminating the appropriate information.

Uncertainty around client and interagency consent

In between the departments there arise issues in sharing the clients’ information either in full or partiality. These issues arose due to the limited or lack of training of health personnel regarding disclosure and confidentiality clauses and inadequate information shared.

Existence of overlapping care plans

The existence of overlapping care plans would be source of conflict during referrals and information shared as to the type of care required to be provided to particular patients. This in turn leads to inefficiencies in the departments as quality of care is compromised and poor. Information to be shared among the departments should be consistent with the practices and service delivery programs of the respective health care setting.

Knowledge management tools

These tools support the objectives of the knowledge management ingenuities and equally development of information, access and storage as well as the sharing of information and its transfer. These tools include;

Electronic bulletin boards

The electronic bulletin boards to be used are essential in disseminating or transfer of informal knowledge while encouraging sharing and collaboration. This avenue can also provide platforms for interactions inform of questions, answers, and comments which can be stored for future reference.

Document repositories

These repositories organize paper documents into large digital folder systems that are particularly housed on servers. The organizations design of the repository will provide a centralized location for the chronic acute care setting.

Instant messaging

This will allow for the health care providers to share information online. This also provides for social sharing of ideas that would assist in synchronized engagement in communication and uniformity in the provision of health services especially for the patients with acute conditions. According to research findings, the process of successful implementation is in three particular stages that occur concurrently i.e. adoption, acceptance, and assimilation. However, there are factors that influence the three implementation stages limiting its successful completion. These factors include;

- Design influences; Expected results, innovation characteristics, communication characteristics, and fit. - Limitation to design; Technological infrastructure, environment, organizational, and resources characteristics

- Design influences; Performance and effort expectancy - Limitation to design; Attitude towards tech-use and social influences

Assimilation

- Design influences; Process characteristics, and system characteristics - Limitation to design; Institutional characteristics and management characteristics Therefore for an over haul from the traditional models employed to the incorporation of the knowledge management models the following steps are to be adhered to;

Step I: Knowledge Management Model Adoption

Some of the factors evident within the health care setting include; commercial advantage, characteristics, cultural values, organizational viability, information quality, and system quality. Therefore for its promotion to adoption; - Start by performing an internal analysis of the health care organization - Evaluate the knowledge or information needs, communities of practice, and lines of communication among departments. - Conduct a detailed cost benefit analysis while considering the number of patients attended to in the chronic acute care department, size of the firm, frequency of use, complexity of the system structure, maintenance costs, training costs, security concerns in regards to the enhancements in performance; lower costs as compared to the previous model, and lower response time. - Assess the existing work practices and the determination of how to improve the system from the present systems - In addition, the more precise approach the knowledge model, the less advanced the required solution.

Step II: Knowledge Management Acceptance

Here, there are factors outlined such as ease of use of the models, anxiety, core motivation, results demonstrability, job-fit, and social factors that would hinder the swift acceptance of the new KM models. However, to improve acceptance it is required that; - Encompass the users in the implementation and design process whenever possible - Involve the user in the system evaluation whenever necessary - The system to be adopted should made as intuitive and friendly as possible - Maintain the multiple standpoints of the stored knowledge - Provision of suitable managerial an technical support - Also, employ product campaigns to promote the new systems all through the organization.

Step III: Knowledge Management Models Assimilation

During the assimilation process of the knowledge management models, there are factors that arise including; management campaign, process cost, promotion of collaboration, knowledge barrier, and process quality. Therefore to improve this assimilation the following need to be considered; - Information management: A system’s content is required to be kept relevant through filtering, revising, and regular updating for it to remain suitable. - Apparent alluring factors: This includes the management’s capacity to induce users in these departments of the advantages of the knowledge management models - Appropriate budgeting: That involves the implementing a cost effective knowledge management system and planning for the expenses. - Focus on group effort: Particularly the adoption of a knowledge management system that promotes teamwork and is popular among the personnel and it is cost effective as well - Management participation: The entire organization’s management must campaign for the assimilation of the knowledge management models at every level. In essence, these factors affect the successful adoption of the KM models hence an improved information sharing amongst an organization’s department such as e-mails. However, in the chronic acute care management department, the strategic effect of implementing the knowledge management systems that expressively aims to alter the normal operation within the organization needs careful planning and appropriate considerations.

Enhancement of knowledge management as an information sharing and communication tool is to be achieved through the initiatives that mirror the pomposity of concerted person centered care; this is already in practice in certain countries like Australia. The chronic acute care providers inclusive of other primary providers should operationalize care planning and the exclusion of collective and effective communication of care that reinforces it within their run through with patients and the entire care team members.

Knowledge management is the organization, development, and leveraging of knowledge capacity in an organization. This chronic acute care setting is involved in the care of severe cases in patients who mainly are transferred from the primary care setting. However, the successful implementation of knowledge management models in a traditional model organization is faced by various factors that hinder including; uncertainty around client and interagency consent, fragmented communication among the health care departments, and the presence of overlapping care plans. Also, tentative steps are to be adhered to so as to ensure the adoption, acceptance, and assimilation of the new knowledge management model is uniform among departments. This will ensure collective follow through of the models by the health care providers eliminating inconsistencies in the quality of service provided.

This particular topic is of importance in understanding of the rigidities in health care systems, adoption, and practice of models that ensure quality is provided for to the patient. The elaboration on sequence of implementation of the KM models shows the severity of the in depth course to be undertaken in institutions to achieve certain objectives hence the need of more appropriate and improved provider training. The previous opinion held by me on the impaired information sharing among departments in health care that needs to be assessed and more improved models adopted has been strengthened by the research conducted in assessing a traditional health care model.
