Why Nurses May Want to Become MDs

There are some nurses who have always dreamed of making a career change and becoming medical doctors, but college happens, life happens and things change. Nursing sometimes is the next best option. It is only after being in the field and seeing the differences between nurses and doctors do those individuals desire this career path again.

Others want to be more helpful to their patients. Some want more responsibilities including more invasive procedures or overseeing the team. There is a milieu of reasons why someone would want to become a doctor; it is a decision that should not be made lightly. It impacts not only the nurse but also their family and friends. Medical training is long and carries a heavy financial burden.

Is There a Stigma Around Nurses Becoming MDs?

There has always been a stigma surrounding doctors and nurses transitioning to this profession. A decade ago very few nurses would leave bedside nursing to enter medical school but now nurses, doctors, and medical schools are more accepting.

While there is still a slight stigma, it is important for nurses in medical school to remember their training, bedside manner, and compassion towards the patients, but also remember that MDs look at patients with a separate set of objectives and these objectives are what saves lives.

How to Go From Registered Nurse to Medical Doctor

Step 1.) earn a bachelor's degree.

First and foremost, you must already have an undergraduate bachelor’s degree. If the degree is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) then most of the coursework will be sufficient as prerequisites for medical school.

If you have a degree in another non-science field, it is important to take notice of all prerequisite coursework.

If you don't have a bachelor’s degree - this would be the first step in becoming an MD.

>> Show Me Online RN-to-BSN Programs

Step 2.) Take the MCAT

The next step is taking the Medical College Admission Test or MCAT. This exam must be taken within three years of applying to medical school. The MCAT is a standardized computer-based exam that assesses problem-solving, critical thinking, written analysis, and knowledge of scientific concepts and principles.

Unfortunately, prior healthcare experience as a nurse does not give those individuals an advantage over others. In fact, it’s possible that the longer nurses have been practicing will actually have a disadvantage on the exam.

Most students take the MCAT in their last semester of undergrad and prepare extensively in classes. Some major universities even offer students review courses. Nurses would be required to find their own study programs.

The MCAT exam is like the NCLEX that focuses less on real-world application and more on textbook learning. This could be a disadvantage to some nurses.

Step 3.) Apply to Medical School

After sitting for the MCAT, scores are reported to the medical schools that were applied to. Some schools prefer nurses because of their prior experience in the healthcare field while others see it as a hindrance. Medical schools look at undergraduate grades, coursework, the university the individual graduated from and the MCAT scores. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) some medical schools do not look at applicants with MCAT scores under a certain score.

Step 4.) Attend Medical School

Medical school is two years in the classroom setting and two years in the clinical setting. Regardless of prior healthcare experience and training becoming a medical doctor still take four years. Being a nurse does not cut this time down.

Step 5.) Attend a Residency Program and Possibly a Fellowship

After medical school, new physicians attend a residency program that is between two and four years. If an individual wishes to specialize in a specific field, a fellowship is required.

Fellowships can be up to five years in length. The more specialized the field, the longer the post-graduate training.

How Long Does it Take to Go From RN to MD?

Once all is said and done it could be almost ten years (i.e. cardiothoracic surgeons and neurosurgeons) before becoming a full-fledged attending physician.

How Much Does Medical School Cost for Nurses?

According to Educationdata.org , the average cost of medical school is $58,968 per year, and the average total cost is $235,827.

Other Career Advancement Options for Nurses

For nurses, there are a plethora of advanced medical degrees that do not require a four-year medical degree and a lengthy postgraduate residency and fellowship. The most common are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)  and Nurse Practitioner (NP) .

CRNA programs typically last three years and require a doctorate, while NP programs can be completed in two years if done full time. Furthermore, registered nurses can still work while attending these programs, whereas they cannot work while in medical school. Additionally, because NP and CRNA programs are considered career advancements by hospitals, tuition reimbursement may be an option. Medical school would not qualify.

Becoming an MD has its advantages, and it is understandable why some nurses want to further their careers this way. The best advice for anyone considering this path is to have a frank, open conversation with others in the medical field and determine if the length of school, associated financial responsibilities, and change in lifestyle will ultimately be worth it.

Conversion courses

If you're thinking of changing career then a conversion course is the perfect way to transfer your skills to a new field

What is a conversion course?

Conversion courses are intensive postgraduate programmes that allow you to pursue a career that your undergraduate degree didn't prepare you for.

They're usually vocational and can last a few months to several years, depending on the qualification and whether you choose fast-track, full-time or part-time study.

Often condensing an undergraduate degree into a shorter time, they are useful for those people who chose their undergraduate degree without a career in mind and would now like to switch.

What courses are available?

  • Graduate Diploma in Psychology (GDP) - Gives students without a degree accredited by the British Psychology Society (BPS) access to professional psychology courses. Explore psychology conversion courses .
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) - The PGCE is the qualification to take if you want to become a teacher. Lasting one year full time, they can be incredibly competitive to secure a place on. Find out more about applying for teacher training .
  • Medicine conversion courses  - If you didn't study medicine as your first degree, you can take a four-year, fast-track course. Some courses accept graduates from any discipline, while others require you to have studied a relevant subject such as biology or chemistry. However, you'll need to have completed relevant work experience to gain entry. Search medicine conversion courses .
  • Nursing conversion courses - Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, accelerated programmes allow you to complete training in two years (full time) instead of three or four. You can train in adult , children's , learning disability or mental health nursing . Universities set their own entry requirements, so contact departments directly to find out how to apply. Search nursing conversion courses .
  • IT conversion courses  - Many graduates choose to undertake conversion courses in this field when considering careers in technical and business roles, as specialised theoretical and/or practical IT knowledge can significantly improve your prospects. Search information technology conversion courses .
  • Engineering conversion courses - Courses are available in a range of specialisms, from civil and structural to biomedical and energy engineering. Most include an industrial placement. While many courses list a degree of at least a 2:1 in either a science or maths-related subject as a requirement, some are designed for graduates of non-related subjects. Search engineering conversion courses .
  • Social work conversion courses - Typically taking two years to complete, the Masters in Social Work involves assessment through group projects, essays and a compulsory dissertation. As part of your application, you'll need to demonstrate a passion and commitment to social work through plenty of prior work experience - either from paid or voluntary positions. Search social work conversion courses , or find out what else you'll need to become a social worker .
  • Property conversion courses  - To start your career in real estate you'll need a postgraduate qualification accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This will equip you with all-round knowledge of the property sector, typically delivered from a business perspective. Search property studies conversion courses .
  • Economics conversion courses - If you didn't study economics for your first degree and wish to become an economist , this could be the right option for you. These courses provide training in core components of modern economic analysis and appropriate quantitative methods. They usually consist of a diploma year, followed by a Masters degree in the second year. Search economics conversion courses .

Conversion courses are also available in accountancy, business, human resources (HR), marketing and physiotherapy.

What does a conversion course involve?

Programme length and structure depend on the individual qualification. However, courses are usually hands-on, involving work placements, exams, essays and coursework - alongside taught tutorials. Courses taken at universities on a full or part-time basis usually follow the same time structure as standard degree programmes.

Fast-track routes are popular, as these full-time short courses allow you to obtain the skills you need to enter the job market in the shortest possible time. This intensity is the key difference to studying the same subject at undergraduate level, and you'll still be expected to do plenty of private study outside of your contact time.

By studying part time, you'll be able to gain work experience before you graduate, and study during the evenings and weekends. Get advice on working while studying .

What qualifications do I need?

Entry requirements depend on the qualification, course and institution. You'll almost always need at least a 2:1 Bachelors degree - although, due to the nature of conversion courses, it can be in any subject. You may get onto a course with a 2:2, providing you have sufficient relevant work experience to strengthen your application. Contact the institution if you don't quite meet the entry criteria to see whether they'll accept you.

If you're an international student, you should check individual requirements with your chosen university.  UK ENIC  may help you better understand how your qualifications compare with those in the UK.

Browse job profiles to learn more about the entry requirements for your chosen career.

How much does it cost?

Tuition fees for conversion courses range widely. However, PGCEs - the most notable conversion course - usually cost £9,250. International students should expect to pay considerably more.

You should never enrol on a conversion course without first understanding your funding options, because their vocational nature means that financial help, especially employer sponsorship , is commonplace. Your employer - or future employer - may be willing to sponsor you, especially if your qualification is accredited by a professional body and will prove beneficial to the organisation. Read all about professional qualifications .

Other sources of funding, such as  postgraduate loans and scholarships and bursaries may also be available. However, this depends on the subject and your personal circumstances. For example, government bursaries are available for PGCE students with a strong first degree.

For more information, see  funding postgraduate study .

Should I do a conversion course?

Taking a conversion course is essential if you're looking to fast-track a career change or continue studying but in a different subject from your first degree. Completing one will widen your range of skills, increase your confidence of landing work in a specific field and you'll achieve professional accreditation, all of which will improve your job prospects.

Changing career can increase your earning potential and allow you to pursue a vocation that you find more fulfilling. However, it may result in short-term stress and an initial drop in income. Before committing to a conversion course, ask yourself:

  • Is the qualification necessary for my profession?
  • Do employers value the qualification?
  • How many graduates get jobs after doing the course?
  • Will it lead to a  PhD or further study?

If you're an international student, you'll also need to factor in additional costs and requirements, such as securing accommodation and a visa to study in the UK .

To help you make the decision, see  what can I do with my degree? to discover where a conversion course could lead.

How do I find a course?

Before you choose a course, find out which programmes potential employers prefer, or if they state a preference at all. If this information isn't available, think about:

  • course content
  • department ranking
  • entry requirements
  • external course validation
  • institution reputation
  • relationship with tutors
  • student satisfaction
  • whether the course is taught by industry professionals.

There's no single body that covers all postgraduate admissions - you'll apply directly to the institution for some courses, while for others, such as nursing, you'll be required to use UCAS. Each university has its own process and deadlines, but the rule of applying as early as possible still stands as institutions may fill their places early. Careers: RN to BSN Online Program

The need for educated nursing professionals in Greater Cleveland is considerable. Forecasts project that demand for RNs in Ohio will increase 24% from 2000-2020, while the supply of professionals to fill these positions will decrease by 8%.

This nursing shortage has opened new doors of opportunity. Many hospitals and federal loan forgiveness programs have made a quality nursing education possible for many.

Ursuline's Breen School of Nursing offers leadership experience as part of each student’s professional preparation. The nursing program provides an excellent foundation for the professional nurse to function as a decision maker and caregiver within and across health care systems. This is in keeping with the changing role of the professional nurse, who today combines these dual functions.

Today’s nurse works autonomously in a variety of acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community-based agencies. A nurse’s role in these settings also varies. Some nurses pursue careers as practitioners, educators, administrators, clinical specialists, and consultants, while others are engaged in private practice. Especially important to women is that nursing offers professional, personal, and economic rewards, with flexible opportunities for hours and career patterns.

The Ursuline nursing program also offers a strong foundation for graduate study leading to positions as advanced practice nurses as well as positions in research, education, and administration.

Accelerated programmes

Accelerated or shortened courses are available in certain clinical professions such as nursing and the allied health professions.

Typically, these courses allow graduates to undertake training in two years instead of three or four. This is because accreditation for prior experiential learning (APEL) can be given by the university. These courses are available in:

  • nursing – adult , children’s , learning disabilities , and mental health fields
  • diagnostic and therapeutic radiography
  • occupational therapy
  • paramedicine
  • physiotherapy
  • prosthetics and orthotics
  • speech and language therapy

conversion course in nursing

There are also accelerated courses in medicine and dentistry . These generally take four years instead of the standard five.

You can search for approved accelerated courses using our course finder . Alternatively, approved courses, including accelerated programmes, are listed on the websites of the relevant professional body:

  • Health and Care Professions Council
  • Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • General Medical Council
  • General Dental Council

Entry requirements

Universities set their own entry requirements for accelerated programmes. You may need a relevant degree, for example in a science or social science subject. If you have a degree-equivalent qualification such as a professional award, this may be acceptable for entry to an accelerated programme.

The  UCAS website  allows you to search for full-time courses and view entry requirements. More detailed information about specific courses can be found in university prospectuses and on their websites.

You apply for accelerated programmes either through  UCAS  or directly to the university where you want to study.

Conversion courses

Are you currently working in a profession that doesn’t fit you the way it used to? Do you want to make a complete career change but don’t know how or where to get started? Embark on a new path with a conversion course at the University of Sunderland.

Register your interest

What is a conversion course?

It’s a misconception that you can only study a postgraduate course that is related to your undergraduate degree ( find out the difference between an MA and an MSc degree ).

A conversion course is an intensive postgraduate degree that enables you to change career direction. You probably chose to study your undergraduate degree because you liked the subject and were academically strong in that area, or even because you had a specific career in mind at the time. But perhaps you aren’t the same person anymore and your priorities have changed; a different career beckons – maybe even your dream job. A conversion course is the perfect way to re-start.

Many of our conversion courses are condensed versions of our undergraduate courses – studied in a shorter period of time, and at masters level. Even though it may be in a completely different subject, your previous degree will actually come in handy as you can use the skills you developed at undergraduate level – such as critical thinking and research analysis.

Conversion courses

Do you want to start a new career, change direction or explore a different subject area? You can with a postgraduate conversion course.

Callum studied an undergraduate science degree at NTU, but a work placement inspired him to switch to law. Hear Callum’s story.

What is a conversion course?

A conversion course is a postgraduate qualification open to graduates from different subject areas. They're designed to prepare you for a career unrelated to your undergraduate degree. Some are professionally accredited or lead to further professional qualifications, and others enable you to gain skills in a new area.

‘Conversion courses could provide nurses where they are needed’

23 August, 2023 By Ingrid Pritchard

Another day in the office, and another excited call from a registered nurse who is hoping to enrol onto the master’s degree in pre-registration nursing course. They want to enrol so they can convert to a different field of nursing or gain a second nurse registration.

Some callers explain that they have always wanted to be a mental health nurse but never had the opportunity. Others explain how they realise that adult nursing is where their talents lie. I hear their anticipation as they wait for my response. Unfortunately, I must disappoint them as the MSc nursing course is for pre-registration applicants only. They then ask me if I know of anywhere else they could apply.

“Enabling nurses to convert or become registered in two or more fields of nursing can only be beneficial”

I explain that according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) programme approval website, there are only 32 dual registration courses (combined with adult nursing) in the UK, and they are for pre-registrants only. Less than a handful of UK institutions offer conversion courses to registered nurses.

A conversion, also known as an advanced standing course, traditionally meant registered nurses would train theoretically and practically for a further 12 months to gain an additional NMC registration in a different field of nursing. They could then work in both fields or convert to the new field. When I trained in 1997, they were widely available and extremely popular as they offered flexibility and opportunities for nurses, as well as benefits for patients and employers.

Additionally, unlike today, student nurses would experience all fields of nursing in their initial training period. This meant that student nurses would understand the nuances of each field before choosing to specialise in one. Having experienced each field of nursing meant most nursing students were satisfied that they would qualify in their desired field and one that was suited to their skill set. In comparison, today, students must choose their desired field upon application which may mean that some students may not choose the most optimal one for them. If people cannot convert to a more desired or suitable option, they may choose to leave the profession instead.

The institutions offering dual registration to pre-registrants recognise the benefits and explain how registration in two fields of nursing means the patient will be nursed by a highly educated nurse with an enhanced skillset able to address the health needs of the patient fully. Yet, these courses are not routinely available to existing registered nurses. I wonder if as a profession we are missing a golden opportunity. Enabling nurses to convert or become registered in two or more fields of nursing can only be beneficial for patients and the profession, particularly as patients do not fit neatly into just the adult, mental health, child or learning disabilities fields. A child with asthma, for example, may also self-harm, or a person that has been in a road traffic accident may also have learning disabilities. Hence, conversion courses could provide nurses where they are needed.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of people experiencing mental health crisis increases faster than we can meet the demand. Mental health conditions are now prevalent in one in four adults in England alone (Mental Health Resource, nd). NHS Digital (2021) found that mental health conditions in children have risen from one in nine in 2017 to one in six in 2021. Young Minds (nd) explains the number of children needing mental health care in attendance at emergency departments has tripled since 2010. A plan has been created to ensure people attending A&E will have access to health professionals specifically educated in mental health (NHS, 2019). Yet, waiting times for people with mental health disorders are increasing due to a lack of health professionals with sufficient expertise. Facilitating registered nurses to acquire dual registration or convert to mental health nursing could help to address these demands.

Equipping nurses to meet increasingly complex health demands is particularly important when many experienced nurses are leaving the profession and others are striking for the first time in more than 100 years. Providing nurses with the opportunity to convert or acquire registration in a different field of nursing could help to reignite their passion for nursing and retain them. Surely the benefits of these courses mean it is time for them to be resumed.

  • Myth-busting: Postgraduate Conversion Courses

conversion course in nursing

There are many reasons why you might want to do a postgraduate conversion course . They are a great option for recent graduates who decide they want a career in a subject different to their undergraduate degree. They can also be useful for those with an established career looking for a change of direction.

Whatever your reasons for considering a conversion course, it’s likely that you have a lot of questions. The idea of returning to education, or studying a new subject, might be a little intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be. For this blog we’ve taken some of the most common concerns applicants have and turned them around, showing you the positives instead.

“I’m not qualified or have been out of education too long”

It’s funny that many prospective students feel unqualified to do a conversion course, because that’s the whole point!

Depending on what type of course you want to do some will ask for vocational experience, such as Medicine, Nursing or Social Work . However, others will only ask for a Bachelors degree (and it doesn’t always have to be in a related subject). Either way, you’re not expected to go in knowing everything about the subject already. If you’re expected to have certain qualifications or experience it’s usually to make sure you’re confident in this career path. So don’t be put off.

Many courses also have a high admittance of mature students returning to education. Whether you’ve been out of university for one year, or 20, these courses are prepped with resources and staff to help make the transition from work to study as easy as possible.

“I heard conversion courses make you learn a degree’s worth of content in half the time”

It’s true that you will cover a lot of content in a fairly short amount of time. This might be one year for PGCE students, or up to four for medical courses. It will not be easy. No postgraduate course is.

The GDL (Graduate Diploma in Law) is one of the most well know conversion course, designed to qualify graduates with a non-law undergraduate degree for a law career. Covering the core content of a Bachelors of Law (LLB), students will effectively learn two years’ worth of content in one. The GDL is well-known for being difficult, but it also provides students with an elated sense of achievement upon completion.

Just because a conversion course may be difficult, doesn’t mean it won’t be worth it or that you won’t enjoy it. A conversion course gives you the opportunity to learn something new in a subject you’re interested in. It may be a lot of work, but it is also an exciting opportunity that will open doors for your future.

“Conversion courses can be expensive and make you spend more time in education rather than getting real world experience”

Unfortunately, higher education isn’t free in this country. But that doesn’t mean you have to pay out of pocket. There are lots of funding opportunities out there. As many conversion courses are vocational, employer sponsorships , scholarships , bursaries and grants are commonplace. In addition to this you may be entitled to a Masters loan from the government.

Many students also opt for part-time study. Allowing you to spread the cost over two (or more) years, you’ll also have more time to work if you needed an income. Another benefit of enrolling part-time is that it spreads out the content, making it more manageable.

When it comes to weighing up education against ‘real world’ experience, many of these courses provide work placements for their students, allowing them to gain practical experience before graduation. Depending on what field you want to work in, one of these courses might also be a requirement.

“I won’t be as competitive in job applications as someone who didn’t need a conversion course”

This is false. The point of a conversion course is to make sure you are just as qualified as others to enter a particular career. Your previous experience in other fields of study or work will help give your application a unique edge, not hinder it.

Prospective students have no reason to be concerned about future career prospects . But you can always request information from universities and courses about the careers of their recent graduates.

Hopefully this blog has put your mind at ease and shown you that conversion courses are a great option if you’re looking for a change of direction. So, what are you waiting for?
