When Friends Are ‘Like Family’

“My friends are the sisters I was meant to have,” a woman told me. Another said that her friends are more precious than her sisters because they remember things from her past that her sisters don’t and can’t, since they weren’t there. And a man commented that he didn’t enjoy a particular friend’s company all that much, but it was beside the point: “He’s family.”

I interviewed over 80 people for a book I’m writing about friendship, and was struck by how many said that one or another friend is “like family.”

These comments, and how people explained them, shed light on the nature of friendship, the nature of family, and something that lies at the heart of both: what it means to be close.

For friends, as for family, “close” is the holy grail of relationships. (In both contexts I often heard, “I wish we were closer” but never “I wish we weren’t so close.”)

What people meant by “close” could be very different, but their comments all helped me understand how friends could be like family – and why I often say of my friend Karl, “He’s like my brother.” First is longevity. We met at summer camp when I’d just turned 15, and the seeds of closeness were planted during one of those wondrous extended self-revealing teenage conversations, when we sat side by side behind the dining hall. Our friendship continued and deepened as we exchanged long letters that traversed the distance between our homes in Brooklyn and the Bronx.

After college, Karl was the one I called at 2 a.m. when I made a last-minute decision not to join the Peace Corps. Two decades later, we were traveling together when I showed him the photograph of a man I’d just met, saying, “It’s crazy but I keep thinking I’m going to marry him” – and I did.

I was there when Karl left Brown for Julliard, and, years later, when he came out as gay. Karl knew my parents, my cousins, my first husband and the other friends who have been important in my life, as I knew and know his. I visit his mother in a nursing home just as I’d visit my own, were she still alive. We can refer to anything and anyone in our pasts without having to explain.

If I’m upset about something, I call him; I trust his judgment, though I might not always follow his advice. And finally, maybe most of all, there’s comfort. I feel completely comfortable in his home, and when I’m around him, I can be completely and unselfconsciously myself.

It’s not that we don’t get on each other’s nerves. It’s that we do. A cartoon about a married couple could have been about us: A woman standing in the kitchen is saying to the man before her, “Is there anything else I can do wrong for you?” I sometimes feel that whatever I do within Karl’s view, he’ll suggest I do a different way.

All the elements making our friendship so close that Karl is like a brother were threaded through the accounts of people I interviewed. “We’re close” could mean they talk about anything; or that they see each other often; or that, though they don’t see each other often, when they do, it’s as though no time has passed: They just pick up where they left off. And sometimes “close” meant none of the above, but that they have a special connection, a connection of the heart.

There were also differences in what “anything” meant, in the phrase “We can talk about anything.” Paradoxically, it could be either very important, very personal topics, or insignificant details. A woman said of a friend, “We’re not that close; we wouldn’t talk about problems in our kids’ lives,” but, of another, “We’re not that close; we wouldn’t talk about what we’re having for dinner.”

“Like family” can mean dropping in and making plans without planning: You might call up and say, “I just made lasagna. Why don’t you come over for dinner?” Or you can invite yourself: “I’m feeling kind of low. Can I come over for dinner?”

Many grown children continue to wish that their parents or siblings could see them for who they really are, not who they wish them to be. This goal can be realized in friendship. “She gets me,” a woman said of a friend. “When I’m with her I can be myself.”

It would be easy to idealize family-like friendship as all satisfaction and cheer. And maybe for some lucky people it is. But friends can also resemble family by driving you crazy in similar ways. Why does she insist on washing dishes by hand when dishwashers do a better job of killing germs? Why does he always come exactly five minutes late?

Just as with literal families, friends who are like family can bring not only happiness but also pain, because the comfort of a close bond can sometimes morph into the restraints of bondage. The closer the bond, the greater the power to hurt – by disappointing, letting you down or, the ultimate betrayal, by dying. When a friend dies, a part of you dies, too, as you lose forever the experiences, the jokes, the references that you shared. A woman in her 70s who was mourning her lifelong best friend said the worst part was not being able to call her up and tell her how terrible she felt about her dying.

Sometimes we come to see friends as family because members of the family we grew up with live far away or feel too different, or are just too difficult to deal with. A woman who ended all contact with a sister explained that the option of cutting off a family member who brings you grief is a modern liberation, like the freedom to choose a spouse or divorce one. Holes left by rejected (or rejecting) relatives — or left by relatives lost to distance, death or circumstance — can be filled by friends who are like family. But family-like friends don’t have to be filling holes at all. Like my friend Karl, they can simply add richness, joy and, yes, at times, aggravation, that a literal family – in my case, two sisters I’m very close to — also provides.

We do not have much money or wealth but what my family has in abundance is love for each other which cannot be replaced by anything else in this world. My father and my mother are the role models to my sister and me. They struggle a lot to give us a better life. More than anything they have taught us discipline and morals of life which is helping us to lead our lives in a righteous path even today.

I cannot ask anything more to God since he has already showered me with my family which I treasure the most every second and will safeguard even in the future.

The family is a valuable god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life. I love my family very much because all of my family members stand in my good as well as bad times. From moral teachings to love and support, my family has always helped me without any demand. There is no doubt that we experience our biggest triumphs when we really connect to them.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. We, humans, are animals that live together spreading love and care for each other, and this togetherness is called family. The absence of such a divine bonding make us equal to animals.

Family value and growing in such a caring surrounding helps me to pass all the struggles and hardships that I face in my daily life. Most of the people in the world are blessed with having a family. A family, with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows, who is there to guide you through your growing years, who stands by you in the toughest of the situations. I too am blessed to have such a family.

My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. We just miss him when he is not at home.

He never scolds us. But, our mother is just the opposite. She wants us to remain disciplined and we often get scolded by her. However, our father comes to our rescue most of the times. My brother, still in school is the one with whom I love to spend my time the most. Not because I love to play with him, but because, being the elder sister, I enjoy instructing him and showing him who is more powerful at home. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

The Importance of a Family:

A family is said to be the first school of a child. It is from here you start to learn how to speak, walk and interact with the world. It is important to value the importance of a family in one’s life. At times, people feel that they are grown-ups and that their parent’s advice does not matter anymore, but that is not true. It is the elders of the family who at any given of time would know the world better than us and we should all respect our family members and love our siblings as well. It is the family who builds our character and we should feel fortunate to have a family around us.

My family values are what I take so dear to my heart because they have made me what I am today and I plan on passing these great values to my children in future. 1. Honesty:

This is a principle that is highly protected in my family. My dad has this saying that, “honesty is the best policy.” Ever since I was little, my family has taught me how to be honest and the benefits that lie within. Sometimes, my parents even test us in ways we were not expecting and a reward is given to the person that comes out honest. This is one of my family values that I cherish so much and I am proud that it is what my family hold in high esteem.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

4. Dress and Appearance:

This is a religious value we cherish in my family. My dad would say that you are addressed the way you dress. I do not want to be address wrongly and give out a wrong impression. So, our appearance really matter a lot to us and the way we dress.

Conclusion:

Every family has one thing or the other that they hold in high esteem and tend to pass on from generation to generation. This is what makes a family a united sect not because we are related by blood but because of we share the same values.

Introduction:

Why I love my family is a question that has been floating through my mind for a very long time because no matter how hard I try to pin out a reason why I love them, I just can’t find one. This can be due to fact that they mean the whole world to me and I will do anything for them. I love my family a lot and I would like to share some of the reasons why I love my family and will never trade them for anything.

Why I Love My Family:

I have a family that consists of 6 people: my father, my mother and four children which includes me. For you to understand why I love my family I will tell you a little about each of them and why I love them so much.

My father is the best father in the world: well, that’s what I say. He is a business manager. I look up to my father a lot because I will like to take a lot of his behaviours and make it mine. He taught me to be contented with whatever I have. We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

Importance of family is something that is greatly overlooked and underrated in the world we live in today. The definition that the family had about one hundred years before now was very clear. Back then, a family was believed to be a unit that consisted of the father that was in charge of the finances of the family, a mother whose primary duty was to look after the home and take care of the children and then there were the children. Largely based on the region you are from, a family can also include members of the extended family like aunts, uncles and grandparents. This type of family system is referred to as joint family.

Family Importance:

A family that is important is one that is very strong. If a family is going to be very strong, there is a need for the bond between them to be very strong. Bonds that help in keeping the members of a family with each other are relationships. If there are very strong relationships among all the members of a family, there is going to be stronger commitment between all of them and the family as a unit will be very important.

Better communication is also a result of family relationships that are very strong. If all the family members can take time out to talk and know each other well, the bond between them is bound to be very strong. Even if the conversations are about big things or small things, it does not really matter. The most important thing is that all family members stay connected to one another. It is very important that they all list to each other and understand every member.

How to make Family Bonds Very Strong:

We have various things that can help our family bond to improve.

A few of them include:

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

Friends increase the sense of belongingness and generate a feel-good factor. We all thrive and look for at least one that friend who at times criticizes and appreciates too. Emotional and psychological attachments are important and can only be experienced with friends.

You know life is good when you're surrounded by friends who are like family. Here are some of the best things about having such people in your life...

It has often been said that friends are the family we choose for ourselves. 

How true! This recently got me thinking:

At what stage in a relationship do friends start to feel less like friends...and more like family? 

I mean, it's a really fascinating transition when you think about it...

In this article, we'll explore the answer, by discussing 8 extremely endearing traits of friends who are like family. 

In doing so, we'll hopefully discover some important lessons that can help us all become better friends!

Can Friends Be Considered Family?

First of all, let's address a commonly asked question:

Can friends even be considered family? 

In my opinion, the answer is: Absolutely!

Think about it: In certain cultures (such as mine - I'm Nigerian) young people are taught to address family friends as "auntie" and "uncle" even though they aren't actually related. 

This is often done as a sign of respect, and sometimes as an expression of the close relationship between the families.

So it naturally follows that if you can refer to your parents friends' ( who, in some cases, might be complete strangers to you)  as family members, then the same can apply to other people. 

I'm sure we all have those friends who seem to be more reliable than even some of our family members. 

It reminds me of ancient proverb: 

"A true friend shows love at all times, and is a brother who is born for times of distress." (Proverbs 17:17)

If you have a friend like that, then they can certainly be considered family!

With that said, let's dig deeper and consider some specific traits that you can look out for:

8 Common Traits of Friends Who Are Like Family

1. they go out of their way to help you .

What's the difference between fake friends and friends who feel like family? 

Well, fake friends are solely interested in " what's in it for them ." 

On the other hand, friends who are like family have no interest in gaining something from you. 

As mentioned in the proverb quoted above, they'll go out of their way to help you at all times .

If anything, they simply receive the joy and satisfaction that comes from helping a loved one out.

Such friends are worth their weight in gold. 

2. They're not afraid to tell you the truth

Friends who are like family don't tickle your ears by only telling you things you want to hear.

Rather, like your mom or dad, they'll tell you what you need to hear  at any moment in time ,  because they genuinely care about you.

Let's face it, it's not easy to give people advice and counsel.

In fact, it can be quite awkward at times. 

However, true friends will push that aside and say what needs to be said, because they know it's better you hear it from them than from someone else. 

You might dislike their direct approach at first, but eventually you'll love them for it .

3. They're at every gathering

Sometimes friends who feel like family will live far away from you.

But if they live nearby, there's a good chance that they're automatically invited to every social engagement you organize.

(That is, if they aren't helping you organize the event.)

You see, such friends don't usually need a formal invite, because they don't usually view themselves as guests.

When you throw a party, they'll be the first ones to arrive (to help you set up) and last ones to leave (to help you clear up).

Life is just a whole lot easier when they're around, so thank goodness they're always around!

4. You can spend time together doing absolutely nothing

True friendship isn't about doing exciting things 24/7. 

When you feel comfortable with someone, there'll be a lot of quiet moments where you're each just doing your own thing. 

For example, sitting in silence in the same room while you're both on your phone or laptop. 

It takes a while to get to this stage, because when we make new friends we usually try our hardest to make them think we're interesting.

However, when a friend becomes like family, you don't need to put on a show. 

They've known you long enough; they know who you are.

You can just sit back, relax, and be yourself - unapologetically.

5. They look out for opportunities for you

Friends who are like family are talent agents. 

You know, those people who find jobs for actors, musicians, authors, and other entertainment professionals. 

Because they're always scouting for opportunities for you... 

Sometimes these individuals will come in the form of "aunties" who are always matchmaking...

But other times, they'll come in the form of friends who recommend you for great job opportunities.

Unlike crabs in the bucket who try to keep you down, friends who are like family are happy when you succeed. 

In fact, they're even happy when you're more successful than them .

This is because they're too busy celebrating your achievements to feel intimidated by them.

From their perspective,  a win for one is a win for all.  

6. Their friends become your friends

Along the same lines, when you have really close friends, what's theirs becomes yours and what yours becomes theirs .

In other words, their family members become like your family members and their friends become your friends. 

This is one of the best perks of developing intimate friendships, especially if you're shy and reserved . 

You step out of your comfort zone once and reap the benefits over and over again!

7. They don't hold grudges

Family members often step on each other's toes...

...And so do friends who feel like family. 

However, by the time a friendship gets to that mature stage, you've both likely learned how to manage disagreements in a responsible way. 

After all, friendships don't last long when both parties are unwilling to compromise. 

In contrast, friends who are in it for the long haul don't let petty issues break their strong bond.

Moreover, as the friendship develops over time, each party develops a clearer understanding of what the other person likes and dislikes - and acts accordingly!

8. They will fiercely defend you 

If there's one thing friends who are like family won't tolerate, it's malicious slander . 

True friends will be the first to defend you when someone speaks against you behind your back. 

They won't even wait to entertain the person's false stories and excuses, they'll stop them right in their tracks.

Think about it: Most of us feel hurt when someone speaks negatively about us.

But when someone attacks one of our family members, it offends us on a whole different level...

That's just the kind of energy that close friends bring to the table. 

On a daily basis, they're sweet as pie.

But when your reputation is at stake - they're truly a force to be reckoned with.

There is no solution to this problem because I cannot swap my status with anyone in the family.

An African American Family History Like No Other

When the Library opens its new Treasures Gallery next year, displaying some of the most striking papers and artifacts that span some 4,000 years, one of them will certainly stand out: The Blackwell’s Kinfolk Family Tree .

It’s a dizzying, almost overwhelming piece of folk art that depicts the genealogical history of an African American family from Virginia. It’s 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, contains more than 1,500 names spread out on curving trunks, branches and leaves and details family connections from 1789 to the 1970s. Its most famous member? Arthur Ashe Jr., the tennis great.

“The first time I saw it, my chin nearly dropped to the floor,” says Ahmed Johnson, the reference librarian in the History and Genealogy Section who worked with the family to donate the canvas. “And the fact that it’s an African American family that can trace its way back to the first ancestor? Slavery usually made that impossible.”

The research, and the strikingly original canvas, comes from decades of work by the late Thelma S. Doswell, a D.C. school teacher and genealogist who wrote several books on the field. She got started early, being entranced by all the people she did not know at a family reunion.

“I met so many people I didn’t know,” she told a family newsletter in 1982. “I told my mother then that I had to know who these people were.”

She dug into files at the U.S. National Archives, state and local courthouses and antebellum census documents that listed names of the enslaved and sending detailed questionnaires to relatives. The genealogical work, as Johnson pointed out, succeeded in undoing what slavery was designed to do: dehumanize the people trapped in its clutches. Her work was admirable by any standard, Johnson said, but considering the historical hurdles faced by Black American families, it was exceptional.

“It’s always a hit every time we display it,” Johnson said. “People just can’t get over it.”

Doswell created the tree’s folk-art design and artist Wilfred T. Washington put ink to canvas, writing in names by freehand. It was unveiled at the 1959 family reunion.

“I was just a kid then,” says JoAnne Blackwell, president of the Blackwell Family Association, in a phone call from her home in New Jersey. “But it made such an impression on me and everyone else. It made me want to go back to the reunion every year.”

At the foot of the tree is a heavy black rectangle with “The Blackwell’s Kinfolk” written out by hand, in red ink and capital letters. “From 1789” is in gold lettering at the bottom right corner.

A gray rectangle lies directly below that, with an explanatory code in red and black lettering. It spells out the abbreviations used in the tree: “M/B” means marriage bond, “U/M” means unmarried, “N/C” means no children and so on.

The spreading tree above is massive and irregular — it sometimes resembles a meandering river breaking off into multiple streams and creeks rather than orderly tree branches marking the procession of time and generations.

Another striking feature: The tree follows the Blackwells’ matrilineal heritage, with women’s names as or more prominent than the men’s. JENNIE BLACKWELL is the huge name at the base of the trunk, from which everyone else descends, with a smaller notation of “M/B” MIKE below it.

Most names are in small, neat black lettering tucked within the boundaries of a green-bordered leaf. Jeanette. Alvin. Cleotis. Josephine. Cordelia. The name of Ashe, the tennis star, is marked out in gold leaf. Matching gold lettering at the bottom explains: “Tennis Champion – World.” (Ashe won five Grand Slam titles, playing singles or doubles.)

“I chose the oak tree for its characteristic strength,” Doswell told a Washington Post reporter in 1987 in a feature story about the family tree.

Doswell hardly stopped in 1959. She kept at her research and, aided by enthusiastic family members filling out their own histories, completed two more family trees. Both are larger, more detailed and more straightforward in design. The second version, completed in 1971, has 3,333 names and is at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture in Baltimore.

The third tree, completed in 1991, documents some 5,000 names and is at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond.

Ultimately, Doswell was able to trace the family back to west Africa. The names of the first members put on a slave ship bound for the United States: Ama and her daughter, Tab. They were forced upon the Doddington and landed in Yorktown, Virginia, in 1735. There, her research shows, they were bought at an auction by slave owner James Blackwell.

The family’s newest historians, Richard Jones and Laura Blackwell Anderson, have digitized more than 6,200 family members onto a genealogical website service, making the history accessible to all family members.

The family is also planning their reunion next summer in Yorktown, so that they can visit the places where the family’s story began in North America nearly 300 years ago. It has been, as Doswell’s work makes clear, an epic journey.

What a wonderful family!

I feel so blessed to be in this family and to have learned from attending family reunions with my dad and then with my daughters. We are in the photo shown here and I believe this was taken at my dad’s last reunion. I will treasure it and will continue to teach those that come after me about our history. My fascination with our history started 45 years ago when I did an 8th-project about my family.

I will never forget the time, I invited cousin Thelma to my eighth grade history class in 1973. And she literally taught the class how to trace their ancestry roots.What a great moment that was for me.

All good research is meant to be passed on to the next generation to continue. I invite all of our family members and friends to attend the 2024 Annual Blackwell Family Reunion in Yorktown, VA. We’re still in the planning phases with more information to follow. We will be celebrating family and life at the location where a huge part of our American story began back in 1735. According to multiple sources, on June 18, 1735, the slave ship Doddington, Captained by James Copland and his crew of 18 men, disembarked 167 Africans along the York River. The journey began along the Gold Coast of Africa with 188 Africans on board. Two of the surviving Africans were women we have come to know as Ama and Tab. They were purchased by James Glenn Blackwell of York County. Our American story began there, but continues on thru us today. The first time I saw Tab’s name hand written on the Will of Robert Blackwell’s from 1790, I sat there behind the Microfilm screen crying to myself for a long time at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. I txt the image to Jo (our current Blackwell Family Association President, JoAnne Blackwell) and she told me to take my time. Months later, running my fingers across the actual pages of the Will Book in the Lunenburg Courthouse made that capture of my family in print even more real. In 2018, the tears I shed after coming out of the female slave dungeon in Cape Coast Castle, Ghana connected me even more deeply to them. I felt their spirits with me. It was a moment in my life that has profoundly changed me. It’s one thing to make a pilgrimage to a historic location of your ancestors with one loved one, but it’s a completely different blessing to be able to do so with our entire family. That’s what 2024 means to me. I want as many men, women, and children as possible to converge in Yorktown along the shores where Ama and Tab first stepped their feet upon the soil of the Virginia Colony. In Cousin Thelma’s book she wrote, “According to certain family legendists, she (Ama) proceeded life on this continent with fear and homesickness knowing that she would never see her African family again.” In 1755, her daughter Tab was stripped from her arms as James Glenn’s son, Robert, married and expanded south west of the colony in pursuit of a land grant. Further traumatizing both Ama and Tab. What we seek is a healing for all of us. In Yorktown next year, I want us to gather as family to commemorate Ama, Tab, and Cousin Thelma; the three women that are responsible for more than my simple words can speak. Cousin Thelma pulled family together to find our ancestors for us. Now we must continue to pull together to honor their work and sacrifice. Not only to honor them, but also to honor ourselves.

This is remarkable. I could only wish this for my family. I am.onky one of a few doing genealogy. To have so many interested in family research is commendable. Congratulations

In browsing the internet I came across the story of the Blackwell history. It seems my great aunt, my great grandmother’s sister married a man by the name of Peter Blackwell from Harrisburg Pa. They settled in Steelton Pa where they raised a son Arthur. Records indicate the Arthur was adopted. He went on to graduate from Howard University as a Dentist. The only thing that I found out was that Peter was from Virginia perhaps Harpers Ferry area. Finding this History was very interesting and perhaps my great uncle is part of this amazing family

Family communication necessitates the expression of one’s feelings about someone else or something through both verbal and non-verbal communication among family members. Effective family communication is central in the creation of healthy families and strengthens the bonds of love among family members.

Communication within family members helps in early detection of family differences among members and offers an immediate solution to any conflict, which might occur. Healthy communication in the family creates an enabling environment in which members not only pass information about their wants, needs, feelings, or admirations, but also listen to what others have to say.

Effective family communication therefore, cannot be complete without effective listening internalization of the spoken words then giving of response (Gottman, 1994, p.46). Listening is as critical as talking in a healthy communication. Good family relationships including marriages count on good family communication where people express their love and friendship through the exchange of their feelings to each other.

Furthermore, the only efficient way of passing family information from the elder generation to the younger generation is effective communication between the source of the information and the recipient of the information.

Openness in family communication and honesty propagates trust among family members and therefore, creates an atmosphere whereby individuals can express their thoughts without fear of contradiction and intimidation.

According to Graham, “In order for effective communication to take place within families, individual family members must be open and honest with on another” (1996, p. 24). Trust creates strong relationships among family members.

Family Communication: Essay on My Family’s Survival:

• As narrated by my mother

The story about our family survival stretches way back before I was born, as my mother puts it to me. Through the family linage, this was the only time in history that our family went through a survival stage. Opposition and rejection was what our family went through for not less than five consecutive years.

As my mother puts it, the issue started shortly after our first-born completed her high school education with an excellent performance therefore calling for proceeding to higher education. To the disbelief of my mother, her daughter had performed better than what the entire family expected.

She says, “…out of all the poverty and recurrent sent offs from school for fees, she managed to perform better than any other student in the area.” Mum confirms that at that moment when the family was undergoing tough financial constrains, our father worked as a casual laborer in a farm for the whites with meager payment, which could hardly satisfy the ever-increasing family demands.

Even though the awesome academic performance of my sister brought joy to the family, it was short lived. The struggle to get the huge colleges fees set in. According to mum, everything possible had to be done to raise the amount required for the college fees including borrowing from friends and well-wishers.

With or without money, our family stood for education for its members and the only hope that mother had, was her persistence help she had extended to the surrounding community. “Despite my poverty and lack, I have been supporting others in the society and community around so I believed they would show their appreciation by supporting my daughter too” mother posits.

On the other hand, dad had to continue working hard even though very little came out of his sweat. Things did not happen as anticipated; as mum continues, it emerges that none of those she helped came to her rescue when she needed them; instead, what she got, as a reward was a turn down of her request for support from the surrounding community.

Therefore, to get the required money, my family organized a fundraising function. To my surprise as my mother puts it, very few people showed up during the planned date and therefore, little was collected out of the planned fundraising. With very little hopes of getting enough money for the college fees, my mother and the entire family remained optimistic that their daughter would still get good education and achieve her dreams in life.

The neighbors who claimed to be sincere family friends, they turned out to be “family enemies”. According to my mother, “…none of all these neighbors showed up for the fundraiser and those who did were reluctant to offer any financial support.”

In the state of confusion on what to do next, my mother approached a local non-governmental organization working in our area and presented her request for fees sponsorship for her daughter.

The NGO accepted the request and offered full sponsorship towards my sister’s education. She did a bachelors degree in telecommunication and finally got employment with the national telecommunication corporation where she works even to date.

• Story as narrated by uncle

My uncle narrates the story about our family survival to me from our well-vanished living room where he compares the current state of our family and what it was fifteen years ago. He says, “… I remember very well some years back when everybody in the family struggled to collect money for college fees and none of the community around us showed up to help us.”

My uncle felt disappointed by people who pretend to be with you when in problem but in real sense, they do not care what happens especially when things are badly off.

According to my uncle, the community in totality rejected our family’s proposal for financial aid. Even during the fundraiser, very few people showed up for the occasion and the few who showed up had little to offer. This was a big disappointment warranting one to lose hope in life.

With everyone turning away from you, you feel thwarted and this was the state of my uncle. He says, “At the center of the frustrations and disappointments, a good Samaritan the form of a sponsor showed up and cleared the frustrations and disappointments by paying the full college fees for your sister.”

The family survived a tough financial crisis then with little hard-earned resources, but still out of that little, we are able to support others even those who never helped us at a time when we needed them, as my uncle observes.

• Analysis of the story

During the financial survival period of our family, we had both enemies and good people. First, the whites who continued giving our father employment even though little was paid, but at least the basic needs were met; second, the sponsors from the local NGO who accepted to pay for my sisters college fees.

With the burden of college fees payment lifted from the shoulders of the family, every member of the family felt relieved and the future of my sister looked brighter.

On the other hand, there were ‘enemies’ including our own neighbors who willingly decided not to support in raising the college fees when requested to.

They turned down the invitations to the fundraiser and thought that, without them my sister would not attain higher education. Their rejection and opposition was open to all and despite of my family participating in community activities, our request for financial support received a turn down.

• How the story helps us cope in the world

This story instilled in me the understanding that other forces of nature predetermine the fate of everyone in the world other than what people around us can offer. This understanding helps me to cope well with all the situations coming on my way with a strong belief that, all will be well.

The fate of my sisters’ education as seen was predetermined and no other forces could have objected that. Trusting in people could also be dangerous especially in the event when they turn down on you when you seriously need them as was the case in our family.

• How the family maintained dignity and respect

During the entire period of financial survival, my family maintained dignity in the sense that, after the society turned down our request for financial support in the form of a fundraiser, no one from our family questioned them.

Instead, people were busy looking for other means of soliciting for the funds to achieve the intended goal of my sisters’ education. Not only was there dignity maintenance by our family, but also our respect in the all survival time. After my sisters’ education and subsequent employment, the family dignity and respect increased many folds.

• Moral lesson of the story

Putting trust and hope on people surrounding us may lead to disappointment in the event people fail to turn up for our help when we desperately need their help; nevertheless, that should not destroy our ambitions and the inherent spirit within us to achieve our goals in life.

Maintaining a positive attitude in all situations and not giving up can bear good fruits after the hard situation if only we uphold the values of endurance and persistence.

Every member of our family endured the hard economic time and today, things have completely changed; happiness and satisfaction underscores our lives. Persistence in looking for any possible source of money landed my mother to the sponsors who willingly offered to help us all through.

If the family had lost hope due to disappointment, then the vicious cycle of poverty in our family could have continued.

Good communication among family members helps in creating good and healthy families while on the other hand, poor communication in families defines family breakages and violence. Good communication helps in revealing hidden secrets of the family to the young generation shedding some light on why things are the way they are.

From the stories narrated to me, it is clear that, not all has been well as I thought. At some, point our family went through financial crisis difficult to come out of.

From the stories, my ways of perceiving others who pretend to be real friends has sharpened and no longer do I trust everyone, because people can desperately let you down. The unity exhibited by all the family members during the survival period, strengthened love, respect, and togetherness in the family and as it is today, our family relationships continue to be strong.

I’ve watched a lot of presidential campaigns, and I can’t remember one in which the contest for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination has played out quite so publicly. And that’s allowed for some voices and figures to break through who you might not have imagined before. Foremost among them is Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, because of one interview on “Morning Joe,” saying of Donald Trump and JD Vance, “These guys are just weird.”

So we are in the crucial week where Vice President Harris is going to be deciding who her vice presidential nominee is going to be. People who nobody was thinking that much about beforehand have actually broken through. And one has broken through in particular, which is Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. And Tim Walz broke through not for his biography — which is very impressive and in some ways lab grown for a Democrat right now. But that wasn’t what did it. What did it was one interview. I think this is going back to the bread and butter, getting away from this division. We do not like what has happened where we can’t even go to Thanksgiving dinner with our uncle because you end up in some weird fight that is unnecessary. And I think bringing back people together. Well, it’s true. And these guys are just weird. It is. They’re running for He-Man Women Hater’s Club or something. That’s what they go at. That was really the interview heard around the Democratic Party. I have never seen in all of my years in politics a single media hit, or for that matter, speech from a politician, change an entire party’s messaging and orientation all at once. And he goes over to the flag, and he hugs the flag. And I love the flag, but it’s a weird thing he does. JD Vance is awfully weird. It’s not just a weird style that he brings, it’s that this leads to weird policies. A weird idea. It’s just plain weird. But I’ve been wanting to dig a bit deeper into the way Walz came up with that, the way he understands it, and also his record, his particular strategy for appealing to Republicans in districts that vote for Donald Trump. And so he’s kind enough to join me on the show. Governor Walz, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me, Ezra. So you’ve had a hell of a couple of weeks. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen any single person, including, for that matter, a president, change an entire party’s messaging the way your riff on Morning Joe on the weirdness of Trump and JD Vance and Republicans of their ilk did. Now it’s all that any Democrat says. I heard Joe Manchin calling JD Vance weird today. When that messaging’s hit Joe Manchin, something’s happened. So that connected in a way I almost can’t remember anything connecting. But you’ve been using that word for a while when a lot of other Democrats are using existential, terrifying, undemocratic. I’m not saying you don’t believe those things, but why, for you, ‘weird?’ Yeah. All those things are true about an existential threat to global peace, in my opinion, a threat to women’s reproductive. I think that very clearly a desire to strip constitutional power and division, all of those things are true. And for me as a teacher, you couldn’t make your case why people were in that mindset. When they’re in a fear mindset, it’s very difficult for them to listen. And they kept hearing that. And again, our Democrats kept making that ‘democracy is on the ballot.’ Yes, we know that’s true, and we’re scared to death. It’s the emperor’s wearing no clothes is what all this story is. The minute you said that, the spell broke. It dropped down. This guy’s weird stories and inability to connect like a human being on any way — and I made the case, see if you see him laugh. He doesn’t laugh unless he’s laughing at someone. And what happened was the minute that spell came down, the minute everybody in the crowd realized the emperor wasn’t wearing any clothes, we can sweep in and say, who’s asking to ban birth control? Who’s asking to ban these books? Who’s asking to take veterans’ benefits away? And then we come in and say, look, Kamala Harris is talking about making sure that you have expanded health care, making sure there’s daycare available, making sure that it’s easier to get free school lunches they’re talking about on a national level. That’s where that came from. And weird is — it’s specifically to him. I’m certainly not talking about Republicans. I’m not talking about the people who are at those rallies. I’m hearing this from my Republican friends because the people at those rallies, they’re the ones that can most benefit from the message we’re delivering. I looked at him the other night in St. Cloud, Minnesota, young women behind him. We’re going to provide reproductive care for them. I saw a group holding Somalis for Trump. We have a large Somali population. We’re very proud of that. Donald Trump has said we’re going to have a Muslim ban, and he talked about Congresswoman Omar and the Somali community as being so detrimental rather than an asset to this. So we’re going to take care of those people too. And I think this is where Trump and his people get so excited. What do they have if they don’t have that fear? What do they have if there’s not a dystopian society? What do they have if only dear leader can come in and fix it? If people are saying, actually, I’d like to have cheaper daycare. I’d actually like them to quit talking about this, and I really don’t care who somebody’s married to. Because I believe the vast majority of people really don’t want to be in other people’s bedrooms. And I use the thing of small town — this is where JD Vance doesn’t get it. You survive best by just mind your own damn business. Just stay out of people’s business. I want to get at this distinction you’re making between Trump or Vance or the leaders or the policy makers and the crowds. Because I think one of the most dangerous emotions that Democrats sometimes let slip, the sort of negative side of, I think, the liberal personality, can be a kind of contempt, a kind of smugness. This is why Hillary Clinton’s comment on deplorables was so damaging. There is a sense among many people that these educated liberals look down on them. They think they’re retrograde. They think they’re stupid. Republicans have a lot of negative personality traits, too — rage, anger, conspiratorial thinking. But condescension and smugness can be pretty lethal for Democrats. Agreed. One of the things I have heard some Democrats worry about as the whole party has taken up ‘weird’ all at once was — you have a very calibrated way of talking about this. Not everybody does. And it becoming a thing that it sounds like Democrats are saying about all these people who support Donald Trump and who do like him, all these people who feel left behind and left out of the Democratic coalition. How do you police that boundary? This is where I take offense to JD Vance and ‘Hillbilly Elegy.’ Those are my people. I come from a town of 400, 24 kids in a class, 12 cousins, farming, those types of things. That is there, and I know they’re not that. I know they’re not weird. I know they’re not Donald Trump. The thing is, we have to get them away from what he’s trying to sell because that’s not who they are. I mentioned — just picture in your mind Donald Trump coming home after a day of work and picking up a Frisbee and throwing it and his dog catches it and the dog runs over and he gives him a good belly rub because he’s a good boy. That’s what I do, and that’s what those rally goers do. That is exactly who they are. And they’re going through the same things all of our families are. He’s captured some of this because I think you’re right — you people have forgotten me or the entertainment value of whatever he’s done. And fear is scary. The world is changing. We’re seeing conflict in the Middle East. We saw a global pandemic, which he did nothing to fix but seized upon. And then I think it’s breaking that spell again of saying, look, he’s not offering you anything. And then we dang sure better be ready to offer something. If we can’t offer something that impacts their lives like these policies — that’s why I say Republicans, they may not admit it, they love the free school meals and lunch. I guarantee you a lot of them like paid family and medical leave. Small employers who couldn’t afford to compete against a Best Buy and Target, who offered paid family medical leave, now could offer and recruit employees. So now they’re saying, look, I’m paying a little bit into this. This program works. My employees are loyal to me. And boy, they can go home and be with their kids and keep them healthy. It’s just we have to show them that this isn’t — there’s nothing strange about this. They’ll try and say this is ultra liberal. That’s where we need to be more specific. Do you mean the free school lunches? Is that what — or the roads and bridges we built in this town? Is that what you’re speaking about? Governor, you spent a surplus money on this. Yeah, you mean when we eliminated Social Security tax for most of seniors? That’s the one that most bothers you? There’s never a specific. They don’t give you a specific on what the liberal agenda is. And we have to do a better job of saying this is what it is, this is the things that you’re getting.

That was the interview heard around the Democratic Party. I remember it hit me on social media. I saw that and thought, “Oh, that really connects.” And then all of a sudden, it was all you heard from Democrats. “Weird, weird, weird. These guys are weird.”

Why did this connect this way? And is there a risk of this falling into something that can bedevil Democrats, coming off as an insult to Trump’s supporters, like Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables” comment in 2016?
