The world of film is extremely competitive. You may have the best movie idea of all time, but if your script isn’t formatted correctly, there’s a high chance it will never even get read. Follow these steps to maximize your chances of seeing your writing on the big screen.

Sample Scripts

Getting Started

Step 1 Understand what a script is.

  • A script is almost never the work of a single person. Instead, it will go through revisions and rewrites, and ultimately will be interpreted by the producers, directors, and actors.

Tip: Movies and TV are audiovisual mediums. This means that you will need to write your script in a way that encompasses the visual and auditory aspects of the story. Focus on writing pictures and sounds.

Step 2 Read the scripts of some of your favorite movies.

Writing the Script

Step 1 Outline your story.

  • Keep length in mind. When in script format, each page is roughly one minute of screen time. The average length of a two-hour script is 120 pages. Dramas should be around the 2-hour mark, comedies should be shorter, around one and a half hours.

Tip: If the story you need to tell can’t be condensed into less than two hours of screen time, you might be better off turning it into a novel.

Step 2 Write your story in three acts.

  • Act One: This is the set-up for the story. Introduce the world and the characters. Set the tone of the story (comedy, action, romance, etc.). Introduce your protagonist, and begin exploring the conflict that will drive the story. Once the protagonist is set towards the objective, then Act Two begins. For dramas, Act One is typically 30 pages. For comedies, 24 pages.
  • Act Two: This act is the main portion of the story. The protagonist will encounter obstacles on the path to the resolution of the conflict. Subplots are typically introduced in the second act. Throughout the second act, the protagonist should be showing signs of change. For dramas, Act Two is typically 60 pages. For comedies, 48 pages.
  • Act Three: In the third act, the story reaches its resolution. The third act contains the twist of the story and ends with the final confrontation of the objective. Because the story has already been established in the second act, the third act is much faster-paced and condensed. For dramas, Act Three is typically 30 pages. For comedies, 24 pages.

Step 3 Add sequences.

Note: Sequences operate with a separate tension from the main story and often affect how the main story will play out.

Step 4 Start writing scenes.

  • Realistic dialogue is not necessarily good dialogue. Dialogue should be focused on moving the story forward and developing characters. You should not worry about trying to capture reality with dialogue, because in reality, conversations are often dull and lifeless.
  • Read your dialogue aloud. Does it sound halting, stereotyped, or over-the-top? Do all of your characters talk the same way?

Step 6 Cut away the dead weight.

Melessa Sargent

Make sure your script is ready for the next step before submitting it anywhere. Run your script through a spell-checking software to catch any mistakes you missed. It is also helpful to give your writing to someone else to read and ask for their suggestions.

Step 8 Revise your work as many times as necessary.

Formatting the Script

Step 1 Set your page size.

Tip: Page numbers go in the top right corner. The title page does not get numbered.

Step 2 Set your font.

  • Scene Heading : This is also called a “slug line.” It sets the stage for the reader by describing the location. The scene heading is written in all caps. First, denote whether it is an interior or exterior scene by writing “INT.” or “EXT.” Then, follow that with the location, then the time of day. Never end a page with a scene heading, push it down to the next page.
  • Action : This is the descriptive text of the screenplay. Write in the present tense and an active voice. Keep the paragraphs short to hold the reader’s attention. A good paragraph size is 3-5 lines.
  • Character Name : Before dialogue starts, the character speaking is typed out in all caps and indented 3.5” from the left margin. The name can either be the character’s actual name, a description if the character is not named in the movie, or by occupation. If the character is speaking off screen, then “(O.S.)” is written next to the character name. If the character is narrating, “(V.O.)” for voice-over is written next to the name.
  • Dialogue : When a character is speaking, the dialogue is indented 2.5” from the left margin, and between 2-2.5” from the right. The dialogue goes directly beneath the character’s name.

Expert Q&A

Melessa Sargent

  • Your hook (i.e. concept or main point of interest) should be presented within the first ten pages. The first ten pages are what get the producer to read further! [10] X Research source Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 0
  • Try to develop the story so that it progresses naturally. Many first-time screenwriters feel that every second should be more exciting than the last; others jump suddenly between excitement and no excitement at all. Make sure your plot progresses gradually so that the excitement builds to a climax. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • Consider purchasing script-writing software. Several programs are available that will guide you through the formatting or even convert an already-written script into the correct layout. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 3

Tips from our Readers

  • When you finish writing, don't forget to go over your entire script to check that the story makes sense, and that there are no major plot holes!
  • Try to spend at least 30 minutes per day writing, or even 2-3 hours per day, depending on your attention span and how much free time you have.

  • Draw inspiration from the work of others but never directly use someone else's ideas in your writing. This is illegal and morally reprehensible. Thanks Helpful 33 Not Helpful 6
  • Don’t just hand your script out to anyone; ideas are easily stolen. A good way to prevent this, or at least document that you wrote the script, is to register the completed script with the Writer's Guild of America . The WGA is a union representing all working writers and their website is full of information pertaining to the craft of screenwriting. Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 2
  • One is if you use a Word processor such as Microsoft Word, Notepad, Notepad +, Notepad ++, TextEdit, or any kind of processor. It also depends on your Operating System or your OS. If you're using a Mac, the shortcut is Option + G. On a Windows computer or a PC, do the following: Open Word or any editor that you're using for your script. Hold down the Shift key and press the number 9 on your keyboard. You should get half of a parenthetical, meaning one of the parentheses, specifically the left. Turn on your Caps Lock and type the letter C. Now, hold the Shift button down one more time and press 0 on the keyboard. The Copyright symbol now appears. Now, type the year that your script is to be registered as a copyrighted work. Type your name. Finally, type All Rights Reserved.
  • Method 2: Contact the WGA either by phone or via their website, wga.org. Specify that you would like to register your script for copyright.

About This Article

Melessa Sargent

To write a movie script, start with a scene heading at the top of the page in all capital letters that describes the location and time of day of the scene. Then, include a 3-5 line action paragraph that describes what's happening in the scene using an active voice in the present tense. When you're ready to introduce some dialogue, first put the character's name in all capital letters and indent it from the left margin. Then, put the character's dialogue directly below their name. How do you write a screenplay for an experimental short film?

How would one go about writing a short film that involves rapid flash forwards and flash backs (dialogue not barely involved). I realize that most of these visual elements will only be important in the editing phase of the project, but is there anything that is helpful to put into the script and screen play? I am director, writer, and editor, so the direction doesn't need to be for anyone else since I already know what I want.

EDIT: I apologize for my ignorance on the subtle differential elements of a script and screenplay.

The Stanford Prison Experiment

How's it going, fellas? - Hi. - Hi. How you doing? All right. Comfortable? Uh, yeah. Sure. Okay. Question one. Have you ever talked to a psychiatrist or a psychologist about an emotional problem? Uh, no. Nice. Have you ever felt you needed help with an emotional problem? Uh... No. Have you ever attempted to kill yourself? Wow. Uh, no. No. In the past year, have you consumed any alcohol or... - Yes. - Illegal drugs? Illegal drugs? Um, yes. Do... is this... this is going on record? If I say "no," that means that I can be in it? Not necessarily. It's $15 a day? - Yeah. - That's correct. No, I haven't had any alcohol or anything like that. Have you ever given in to an aggressive urge or impulse? Uh, what do you mean by that? Like, domestic violence or rape, incest... - No, no, no, no. - Things of that nature. - No. - No. I go to Stanford. Okay. Have you ever experienced any emotional problems associated with your sexual interests or your choice of a sexual partner? Does love count? If you'd like it to. Okay, then no. Why do you want to participate in this study? To be honest, financial gain. I could use a little cash this summer. I just saw the $15 a day. I was looking through the ads, and it was just... the most interesting. If selected for this study, would you rather be a guard or a prisoner? I don't think I have the qualities to be a guard. Prisoner. Prisoner, I guess. I-I wouldn't want to be a guard. - Prisoner. - A prisoner. Prisoner. A prisoner sounds like it would be a little less work. Prisoner. Why's that? Nobody likes guards. All right, we got a heads. So we can just put him over there, yeah, with the prisoners. Last one. You want the honors? Heads again. He's a prisoner. Okay, so the last one's a guard. Exactly. Well, guys, I think we have our prisoners and our guards. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am Dr. Phil Zimbardo, professor of psychology here at Stanford University. Welcome to orientation. You're gonna be very pleased to know that you all have been chosen to be the prison guards in this study. And that choice was made based upon the exemplary qualities that you all demonstrated during your interviews. So good for you. This experiment will be an extension of my research into the effects prisons can have on human behavior. And being that it's summer and the school's almost empty, we should have near complete privacy for this study. And as you'll soon see, we have cleared out some of the teachers' offices and converted them into prison cells, and the hallway will serve as the prison yard. But remember, just as you are watching the prisoners, my graduate staff and I will be watching you. So under no circumstances whatsoever are you to hit or physically assault the prisoners in any way. Now, you'll all be given sunglasses and uniforms to give the prisoners a sense of a unified, singular authority. Once a prisoner is jailed, he will not be able to leave, except under established procedures. And from this point forward, you should never refer to this as a study or an experiment again. A lot of these books, I don't even know where I got them. The perils of moving in together. What are you thinking about? The experiment? No, experiment's routine. You know, I'm gonna be away for two weeks, and then... And then you are gonna be starting your new job. You make it sound like it's in a different state. Berkeley is an hour up the road. Oh, that I know. It's just I don't know what the guys and I are gonna do without you. Phil... No one's ever gonna take me seriously and... and my career seriously until I go out there and prove it on my own. Hey... It could have been New York. I made this decision for us. I know. I know. I know. It's just... You know what? Nobody deserves this more than you. You were a great student of mine. And you're gonna be a great professor. Thank you. Now wait a second. You did miss a spot right over there. Hey! You can't fall for that. Come on! Get out of here. Get out of here. Hey. You Daniel Culp? Uh, yeah. That's... That's the name they gave me. I'm placing you under arrest for violation of California Penal Code 211, armed robbery. Hey, my brother didn't do anything. Uh, they know that. Everything will be fine. Gogo on, tell Mom I won't be home for dinner. She'll understand. It's okay. Hands on the car and spread 'em. Which one of us should start? Well, I'll do it. Okay, feet apart. Wider. I said "wider. " You guys, this doesn't have to be... Just keep your hands on the wall. Okay, just keep your hands on the wall. Um, put your head down. Uh, and take off your shoes. Uh... Oh, oh. Okay. Um... Put your hands at your sides. Now I want you to strip. Uh, really? Maybe I could have some privacy first... Shut up! And strip. And put your clothes on the floor. Oh, man. Put your clothes to the right. The shirt. Don't we have to delouse him first? Oh, sh*t. Uh, stay where you are. Ah, oh. Right. Jesse. Ah. You made it. I'm so happy. I'm so happy. - Yeah. - Very, very, very good. Uh, everybody, this is Jesse Fletcher. He's gonna consult with us on the experiment. We got Paul, Kyle, and you remember Mike. - Hey. - Yep. Hi. Why don't you pull up a chair? What? Why me? Just do it. All right. Put your arms above your head. F***. Wow. Hey, Phil, um, I don't mean to be rude, but what qualifies him to be here? Well, he's got experience. You're kidding, right? Okay, boys, let's take her down there and show her just how pretty she looks. All right, listen up. From now on, you will be known as Prisoner 8612 and only as 8612. And you will, at all times, refer to us as Mr. Correctional Officer. You got it? Uh, yeah, I got it. What was that? I mean, yes, sir, Mr. Correctional Officer, sir. Yeah, good. All right, um, let's take her down to cell number two. All right. Let's get the next one. Hey. What are you doing in here? You're missing everything. What? You brought me here to legitimize this experiment, and there's nothing legitimate about this place, Phil. You're right. You're right. I didn't explain it well. Prisons, they represent... a loss of freedom, literally and symbolically. Yeah, but that does not explain why they're wearing dresses. They're wearing dresses, Phil. Yes, I understand. Uh... We're trying to strip away their individuality... Make them uniform, feminize them. Feminize them? Yes. Feminize them. Take away all the things that make them them. You see, we're trying to understand how an institution affects an individual's behavior. We're trying to do something... We're trying to do something good. Hey, man. I'm Daniel. Uh, that's Jeff. Hey. I'm... I'm Peter. Well, nice to meet you, comrade. Rate this script: 0.0 / 0 votes

whiplash

J.K. Simmons revealed in an oral history of “ Whiplash ” to mark the film’s 10th anniversary that he assumed the film’s director, Damien Chazelle , was a Black man after he first read the script about the toxic relationship between an aspiring jazz drummer (Miles Teller) and his abusive instructor. Simmons played the latter character and won the Oscar for best supporting actor.

Popular on variety.

Chazelle admitted to Vanity Fair that he also had an assumption about Simmons that didn’t pan out to be true, explaining: “When we first started doing ‘Whiplash,’ I mainly thought of [J.K.] as the dad in ‘Juno.’ He had this wholesome, decent, all-American vibe to him in a lovably, gruff, comic way. So my big concern was, Can you get to a place where we don’t just think you’re kidding around all the time, we’re actually genuinely scared of you?”

“Whiplash” originated as a short film in which Simmons was cast. He reprised the role in the feature version. Chazelle remembered walking onto the set of the short film and “just waiting to see initially what [Simmons] was going to do with the role and how much I’m going to want to adjust.”

In addition to the Oscar, Simmons won best supporting actor prizes from the Golden Globes and BAFTA Film Awards. “Whiplash” earned a total of five Oscar nominations, including best picture, and it also took home the prize for best film editing. The film is being rereleased in theaters on Sept. 20 to mark its 10th anniversary.

Head over to Vanity Fair’s website to read the full “Whiplash” oral history.
