In order to establish the program cost, we multiplied the total number of credits by the per credit tuition rate. In most cases, this is the number you’ll see under each ranking. A few things to note as you’re skimming through the summaries:

• Program Costs : We’ve quoted 2024 tuition prices and per credit costs. Because these frequently change, we’ve also provided you with a link to the school’s tuition & fees section!
• Minimum Credits: We give a price estimate for the online Ed.D. program with the fewest amount of credits. In our profiles, you’ll notice that some schools also offer longer programs that cost more.
• In-State vs. Out-of-State : If a public university had different rates for in-state and out-of-state students, we used the out-of-state rate to order our schools. We’ve also quoted the in-state rate in case you’re lucky enough to live nearby.

KU’s 100% Online Ed.D in Educational Administration for PK-12 leaders is not only affordable—it’s one of the most prestigious distance learning doctorates in the Midwest. The School of Education & Human Sciences has come up with a 51-credit, 3-year program that can prepare students for Kansas licensure endorsement in school district administration. (Additional coursework can be added to complete the building-level endorsement.)

Tuition for this online doctorate is charged at flat per credit rate for all students, regardless of their state of residence. Better yet, flat-rate programs are not subject to additional course or campus fees.

ULM’s short & sweet program is the brainchild of its CAEP-accredited School of Education . It’s a 100% online doctorate that can be completed in two years via eight-week terms. The curriculum is a balance of research & professional coursework for K-20 professionals. But ULM is unique in allowing students to choose a dissertation OR a capstone & action plan for their final project.

In the section on Ed.D. tuition , ULM states that tuition is pay-by-the-course. However, it doesn’t mention whether online graduate students are expected to pay additional fees (e.g. application fee). And it doesn’t give estimates for associated costs (e.g. course materials). So we recommend you ask the program coordinator for details on these two factors.

The university also doesn’t provide a great deal of information on financial support for graduate students. You can start by contacting the Office of Financial Aid . They should be able to answer questions about federal options (e.g. loans) and external scholarships.

In the past couple of years, CU Denver’s School of Education & Human Development has expanded their online doctorate in Leadership for Educational Equity to encompass four unique specialties: Executive Leadership; Higher Education; Justice, Equity & Diverse Identities; and Research Leadership. To accommodate working professionals, this 54-credit Ed.D. is cohort-based and most specialties are 100% online. However, Higher Education students will be expected to visit the campus twice per year.

Colorado students pay the highly affordable resident rate for the Ed.D. Everyone else pays the higher (but still affordable) online rate for out-of-state graduate students—this is 120% of the in-state resident rate. Be aware that online students at CU Denver are required to pay for the per term Student Services fee and the one-off New Student fee.

Online doctorates at NGU’s College of Education are handily divided into two pathways: K-12 and higher education. Within those pathways, you’ll conduct field analyses of current practices and tackle a dissertation. The vast majority of coursework is asynchronous, but there will be occasional face-to-face synchronous sessions. On a part-time plan of study, you can finish your Ed.D. in 4 years.

Doctoral tuition rates are listed in the section on Graduate Tuition & Fees . NGU is a private Baptist university, so all students pay the same price, no matter where they live. Ed.D. tuition is very reasonable, but it always pays to ask the program coordinator about one-off fees and the potential costs of Slingshot books & materials .

You may also want to talk to them about Graduate Financial Aid . NGU doesn’t appear to offer scholarships for online graduate students, but it does have a monthly payment plan .

PreK-20 leaders will find plenty to love in Texas Tech’s affordable doctorates. They come from a CAEP-accredited College of Education that’s participating in the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). They’re 100% online. And they’re geared towards the workplace. The 66-credit Ed.D. in Educational Leadership includes superintendent certification preparation. The 63-credit Ed.D. in Educational and Instructional Technology embraces AECT principles.

We used Texas Tech’s Tuition Estimator to establish the per credit cost. All students pay the same tuition & fees for online graduate programs, including a mandatory online learning & distance education fee and miscellaneous university fees (e.g. student services). Mizzou has developed an excellent, cohort-based doctorate. It’s been built by a CAEP-accredited College of Education & Human Development . It’s been shaped by the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). And it’s a 100% online program with optional campus opportunities. This 3-year doctorate doesn’t lead to administrator certification, but it’s a real find for PK–20+ educators & leaders. Missouri residents can also consider Mizzou’s on-campus Ed.D. in Reading Education .

Visit the tuition & fees section for more info on costs. The affordable distance learning tuition rate is the same for in-state and out-of-state graduate students. You’ll also need to budget for one-off expenses like the application fee, books & course materials, and any additional course fees. When in doubt, ask the program coordinator for estimates.

Southeastern is a private Christian university, so programs in the College of Education have a religious flavor. Ed.D. applicants are expected to submit a Christian faith statement and teaching emphasizes a Christian worldview. Online doctorates are built for practicality, with hands-on practicums, two 3-day campus intensives, and multiple start dates. With a little grit & determination, you’ll be able to finish the degree in 3-4 years.

Southeastern’s tuition & fee structure is relatively straightforward. In addition to the tuition cost that we’ve quoted, you’ll have to budget for travel to the intensives during the first and second years. You may also be responsible for per semester fees and assorted costs like books & materials. Feel free to ask the program coordinator for a sample budget.

Southeastern’s price is already pretty low, so it doesn’t offer additional internal scholarships to online Ed.D. students. But it has developed an interest-free monthly payment plan .

U of A’s CAEP-accredited College of Education and Health Professions (COEHP) has put together three intriguing—and relatively cheap—online doctorates. They each have their own unique structure. For example, the 42-credit Online/Hybrid Ed.D. in Education Leadership is open to candidates who hold a master’s degree and a specialist degree (or evidence of meeting the requirements for district level licensure), but the other options are designed for applicants with a master’s degree. Don’t be put off by the “96 credits” language—U of A accepts plenty of transfer credits for your master’s degree (e.g. up to 33-42 credits).

Each doctorate will have a separate cost, depending on the total credits. The good news is that all students enrolled in U of A online programs pay in-state tuition rates for online courses, regardless of their state of residency. There are mandatory per credit fees (e.g. library fee), but they’re not large. Having said all that, you may wish to ask the program coordinator if any Adult and Lifelong Learning courses are considered “on-campus,” since these have separate tuition & fee rates.

You’ll also participate in 3 residencies with a few days of intensive face-to-face work.

Even though UWF is a public university, tuition & fees are still highly affordable for non-residents. Tuition waivers can cover up to 90% of out-of-state tuition for graduate students admitted to online programs. That’s the price we’ve quoted for you above. Renewal of waivers is not automatic and waiver requests must be submitted every semester.

This program is not intended to help teachers become administrators. Instead, it’s a degree that seasoned PreK-20 leaders & relevant professionals can investigate. There are weekly Zoom meetings and multiple opportunities for career-building. Take 2 courses per session and you’ll finish in just over 2 years. Study part-time and finish in 3.5 years.

LSUS is a public university, but all online Ed.D. students pay the same pay-as-you-go tuition rate , regardless of their location. All mandatory fees are included in our estimate. There may be additional course-specific fees for proctoring and/or books—ask an Enrollment Coach about one-off costs.

UW’s programs are well-known for being affordable. But we’re also pleased to report that the College of Education has street credibility! It’s CAEP-accredited. It’s participating in the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). And it offers a wide range of online doctorates, including one that can help you earn the superintendent endorsement . Doctorates are listed as 75-81 credits, but the College accepts ~30 transfer credits from your master’s degree. Check each program page to learn about on-campus requirements—some may contain short visits (e.g. orientation & dissertation defense).

UW charges different online tuition rates for in-state, out-of-state, and alumni graduate students. Happily, the out-of-state rate is still pretty darn cheap. There is a mandatory, per credit online fee, which we’ve included in our calculations. You’ll also need to budget for travel expenses to the campus and associated costs (e.g. books). Be sure to talk to the program coordinator about how many master’s degree credits you’ll be able to transfer!

We particularly like the fact that the 100% online Ed.D. is aligned to ISTE standards and it comes in two tracks—Advanced or Initial Certification. You can choose the one that suits your experience level.

Although KSU is a public university, online tuition rates are the same for all graduate students, regardless of their state of residency. Additional costs will include a per semester student fee, as well as books, materials, and any course-specific fees. Credit transfers are available for Ed.S. graduates.

YSU’s highly affordable online doctorates are brought to you by the CAEP-accredited Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences & Education . Even though they have different foci, they share the same DNA: 60 credit hours, 32 months, and a traditional 5-chapter dissertation. We’re happy to see that the program also includes a mandatory “Clinical Experience.” Like an internship, these work-focused projects are completed under the supervision of an appropriately licensed administrator.

Tuition costs are uncomplicated. Ohio students pay a little less than out-of-state students, but the difference is negligible! There are no hidden fees and the one-time application fee will be waived for active military members & veterans. One thing to note—payment plans are not available for accelerated online students.

YSU is cheap to begin with, so there isn’t much in the way of financial aid for online students. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can help with questions on loans & federal programs. You may also wish to ask the program coordinator if distance learners are eligible for educational leadership scholarships for dissertation research.

7 University of the Cumberlands

The majority of classes are asynchronous, with no set log-in times.

UC is admirably straightforward about its tuition & fees . You’ll see the EdD Online rate listed in the Graduate Tuition section—all mandatory fees are included in the One Price Promise. You may also need to budget for one-off expenses like the application fee.

UC doesn’t have as many scholarships & support packages as large (and heavily endowed) public universities, but it does have an advice section on Graduate Student Aid . This has more details on external scholarship opportunities and UC payment plans .

6 Northern Illinois University

NIU has your PreK-20 needs covered! The CAEP-accredited College of Education has launched a new cohort-based, 100% online Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with synchronous classes on one weekday evening.  The 54-credit Ed.D. in Community College Leadership is longer and not 100% online—there’s a week-long campus intensive each summer. But it’s packed with targeted topics and plenty of opportunities to network. Illinois residents can consider the Hybrid Executive Ed.D. in Higher Education .

We’ve quoted you the domestic price for the 100% online doctorate in Educational Leadership; international students pay more. The tuition rate for the doctorate in Community College Leadership is the same for everyone, but it’s $585 per credit hour. The highly affordable Ed.D. in Leadership Studies is tailor-made for leaders in schools, universities, government organizations, non-profits, the military, and more. The Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction is longer and more expensive, but it may be just right for educators who want a personal touch. You’ll be able to connect with peers during synchronous virtual class meetings on weekday evenings.

The 45-credit Ed.D. in Leadership Studies is a distance learning program, so it qualifies for  online tuition rates . These are the same for in-state and out-of-state graduate students! The 57-credit Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction is an EdD/EdS Advanced Program, so there will be an additional $50 per credit hour program fee.

In the doctoral handbook, Marshall states that students pursuing dissertation research may be eligible for modest awards (e.g. $500). If you’re a PreK-12 educator, UMass Lowell’s Ed.D. is worth your inspection! The College of Education often achieves a top 20 ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Graduate Education Programs. It has chosen to take part in the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). And it offers the Ed.D. in two useful tracks: General Leadership or STEM. But it does not lead to licensure. Instead, it’s intended to help teachers and/or instructional leaders move up to the next level in their careers.

UMass Lowell provides a breakdown of costs in the Tuition & Financing section of the program, but check the Online Tuition & Fees section for the latest rates. On top of tuition, you’ll need to budget for three on-campus residencies (one week each summer) and associated fees (e.g. first-year student fee, registration fee per semester, books, etc.). When you add up all these costs, the grand total comes to ~$26,000, not including travel expenses.

UWG Online and the CAEP-accredited College of Education (COE) have developed a wide range of cohort-based doctorates, including programs with multiple concentrations (e.g. School Improvement) and accelerated tracks for Ed.S. graduates (e.g. Professional Counseling)! The Ed.D. in School Improvement is 100% online; Higher Education Administration and Professional Counseling require one on-campus visit for orientation; and Nursing Education involves a couple of trips. Programs start in the fall.

Online tuition rates at UWG are the same for in-state and out-of-state graduate students. The more courses you take in a semester, the more you’ll save. We’ve given you an estimate that’s based on 3 years of study for the online Ed.D. programs in School Improvement and Professional Counseling (that’s why it’s a little lower than simply multiplying credits). However, Higher Education and Nursing Education have a more expensive tuition rate. There may also be miscellaneous fees.

UNG’s tuition & fee charts can help you calculate the cost of tuition, but it’s important to note that mandatory technology fees are capped at certain credit thresholds. With a 60-credit doctorate that takes 9 semesters, you’re looking at:

This public university hits our #1 spot thanks to a great eTuition rate and a solid track record! VSU is part of the University System of Georgia. The College of Education & Human Services (COEHS) is CAEP-accredited. Up to 9 credit hours (i.e. 3 courses) of transfer credits are allowed. And Ed.D. programs are streamlined & diverse. There’s an online doctorate in leadership and specialist hybrid options. Just bear in mind that VSU has high admissions standards (e.g. 3.5 GPA).

The eTuition rate applies to all fully online courses, and it’s the same for in-state & out-of-state graduate students. With a 55-credit program, you might end up paying $16,115 in total. This figure includes eTuition for 46 credit hours of coursework (e.g. 24 months) and 9 credit hours for the dissertation (time varies). Online students are exempt from most student fees, except for the technology fee. If you’re interested in the hybrid program, ask the program coordinator about tuition rates for any campus courses.

• Per Credit Tuition Rate : At private universities, this is easy—all Ed.D. students pay the same rate. Public universities are trickier. Many schools have an “online tuition rate” that is the same for all Ed.D. students, regardless of their state of residency. But a few schools continue to charge different in-state and out-of-state rates, even for online doctorates. We’ve flagged those outliers in our rankings.
• Distance Education Fee : Universities often tack on a mandatory, per credit fee for online learners. They’ll usually make this clear on the tuition page, but be sure to read through the entire section. Sometimes this info is included in “notes” at the bottom. • Miscellaneous Fees : Keep an eye out for these. Public and private universities often tack on per semester or per term fees that cover areas like IT, student fees, and the like. As you can see from this list, “cheap” is a flexible term. The total price of your online Ed.D. will depend on your situation. Overall, the most affordable online Ed.D. programs in the country range from $16,000-$33,000. In our rankings, you’ll see that the top 3 cheapest schools have kept their minimum tuition below $20,000. However, the majority of schools are in the $22,000-$33,000 range. And tuition rates will usually go up every year.

Keep in mind that super-cheap programs often have fewer credits than some of the big guns. This isn’t a bad thing, but it’s something to consider when you’re looking at the curriculum. Doctoral students focus on developing the research skills necessary to be thoughtful and critical creators of knowledge. The UNE Online experience integrates the iterative dissertation writing process across multiple dissertation development courses. Students receive direct instruction on, and high levels of support, writing their dissertations. Students can use a traditional qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method approach to their dissertation work. Students work towards informing their dissertation at the very beginning of the Ed.D. program and are guided as they write sections of their dissertation proposal chapters through dissertation development courses.  

The dissertation process is laid out in 5 steps:

• Students propose a potential topic of future study in the application essay.
• Topic exploration happens within the dissertation development courses.
• Sections of the literature review draft, conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and research approach are constructed as students complete the coursework. 
• Ed.D. students are assigned a dissertation committee (Dissertation Chair and Second Reader) upon the successful completion of the two capstone courses. By the time students get to the point where their dissertation committee is assigned, they will have written a draft version of three dissertation proposal chapters.
• After a successful dissertation proposal to their committee, students will submit an IRB application. Upon approval from the IRB, students will collect and analyze their data. The dissertation defense will be scheduled upon completion of the dissertation and approval from their committee. Finalized and approved dissertations will meet the department’s standards of adhering to scholarly research principles to include an exhaustive review of the literature, a clearly articulated research approach and an analysis, and a thoughtful and supported conclusion that acknowledges the study’s limitations.

Faculty and Advisor Support During Dissertation

Each successful candidate will be assigned a two-person dissertation team, including a Dissertation Chair and Second Reader. This two-person team is responsible for overseeing and approving the development of the dissertation. They will review all related work and support the student’s development as a scholar.

We take a holistic approach to reviewing applications. Our Ed.D. program is designed for lifelong learners, including those seeking personal enrichment and mid-career professionals who are looking to initiate change in their organization. While there is no one typical background for successful applicants, students are characterized by an inclination to take on new challenges and come from fields such as K-12 education, higher education, the military, service agencies, healthcare, business, and nonprofits.

Admission Requirements:

• A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or its equivalent.
• Applications are reviewed holistically as a determination of academic readiness. The admissions committee values previous academic performance as indicated on transcripts and considers it as part of the review process.
• Computer with an internet connection, including the hardware and software requirements described in our Technical Requirements. Must also possess sufficient computer skills to navigate the internet as all classes are accessed 100% online.

• If an applicant cannot prove English Proficiency in another way, scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are required and must be submitted as a part of the completed application.

The Doctor of Education program and the EdD Admissions Committee in collaboration with the College of Professional Studies reserve the right to make exceptions to the admissions criteria and to make changes or exceptions to policies and procedures, on a case by case basis, when it deems such a decision is necessary and appropriate.

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Curriculum

Une online’s 51-credit ed.d. program is 100% online and the curriculum is set up in a way for students to engage in:.

• The development of their skills as writers, researchers, and scholars over time.
• Thoughtful dialogue with their peers
• Courses to develop students as practitioners in their fields.
• Dissertation development courses throughout the program.
• Completion of a culminating dissertation that displays the research skills necessary to be thoughtful and critical creators of knowledge.  
• Academic Support that is embedded into select coursework.

This program can be completed in three years or in even less time with accepted transfer credits. Each required 8 week course is 3 credits, with two courses per 16-week semester. With departmental approval, students may elect to enroll a variety of one credit refresher courses to support their ongoing development.

EDU 801: Preparation for the Doctoral Journey (Credits: 3)

The importance of building the dissertation throughout that journey is emphasized. One of the main outcomes of the course is a Literature Review Matrix based on the student’s area of research interest and working topic. The process of inquiry, research and academic writing skills are reinforced, as is the Dissertation Template and the alignment of topic with problem, purpose, research questions and research themes for the Literature Review Matrix.

EDU 802: Qualitative Research Design (Credits: 3)

Students will be introduced to several different qualitative research methods from which to explore. Students will participate in activities which align with the building of a potential qualitative study for their approved working topic of choice.

EDU 803: Quantitative and Mixed Methods Research Design (Credits: 3)

Students will be introduced to quantitative, as well as mixed methods research. Students will describe various research designs and evaluate them for appropriateness for their approved working topic of choice. Students will participate in activities which align with the building of a potential quantitative or mixed methods study.

EDU 804: Leading in a Culture of Technology (Credits: 3)

In today’s swiftly evolving educational tech landscape, leadership and strategic planning skills are crucial. This course empowers students to delve into technological innovation, equipping them to comprehend emerging technologies and craft effective implementation strategies. With a focus on leadership, students will excel at leveraging new technologies for organizational success.

EDU 805: Understanding Change Management in Organizations(Credits: 3)

The ability to create the conditions to effect systematic and productive change is necessary in every profession and organization. Students will be introduced to theories, models, and practices to inform the management of change across various stakeholders internal and external to the organization.

EDU 806: Policy Analysis (Credits: 3)

Students will be introduced to the importance of analyzing existing policies and revising or developing new ones where policies do not currently exist. Collaboration of multiple stakeholders will be reinforced, as will the implementation of the policy and how it will be put into practice using well-constructed procedures. The power of continuous review and analysis will also be explored.

EDU 807: Constructing the Literature Review (Credits: 3)

This writing intensive dissertation development course will afford students the opportunity to expand the Literature Matrix developed in EDU 801 into a working literature review in Chapter 2. The importance of active engagement in the research process will be emphasized. Students will focus on building on their existing knowledge of their approved working topic through intensive research, analysis, synthesis, and continued alignment of topic with problem, purpose, research questions and specific research themes needed for the literature review.

EDU 810: Ethical Decision Making (Credits: 3)

This course examines traditional philosophical and ethical frameworks as well as moral development in terms of how leaders can practically apply these concepts. Students explore approaches to moral and ethical reasoning and will use these approaches to discuss ethical dilemmas related to leading change in organizations.

EDU 811: Organizational Dynamics (Credits: 3)

Organizational dynamics are complex and ever-changing, particularly as a result of a connected and global society. Each organization or organizational structure, whether it be a family, large company, or university can experience, and be required to manage, different and distinct dynamics. This course will also help students better understand the co-existing similarities that may exist across all organizational environments and structures.

EDU 812: Proposal Capstone I (Credits: 3)

This capstone course is the first of two courses combined to bridge the student’s journey of development in order to prepare a draft of the first three chapters based on the approved working topic. Alignment of topic with problem, purpose, research questions, title, and themes needed in the literature review is reinforced using the Alignment Tool, as well as the Five Chapter Dissertation Outline. Chapters 1 and 2 will be submitted as will the Introduction of Chapter 3. CITI training will also be a priority.

EDU 813: Proposal Capstone II (Credits: 3)

This is the second of two capstone courses designed to provide the opportunity for students to submit a full draft of the dissertation proposal. Intensive focus on a theoretically-grounded methodology in Chapter 3 will take place. Continued alignment of topic with problem, purpose, research questions, title, and literature review themes will be reinforced. Students will be assigned their dissertation committee members.

EDU 814: Dissertation Completion – Phase 1 (Credits: 3)

This is the first of four dissertation courses designed to support and provide the opportunity for students to continue their journey and complete their dissertations within the 51-credit program. The Dissertation Completion Timeline will help guide students, and their dissertation committee. The ideal outcome of this course is intended to be final approval of the three-chapter proposal, a PowerPoint Proposal Presentation, and submission of the IRB application. The Lead Advisor is responsible for approving and submitting the student’s application to the IRB. Should students not be able to meet these goals during this course, they will be afforded the opportunity to move forward into EDU 815 if they have demonstrated they are generally making satisfactory progress, communicating with their committee, and adhering to agreed-upon deadlines.

EDU 815: Dissertation Completion – Phase 2 (Credits: 3)

This is the second of four dissertation courses designed to support and provide the opportunity for students to continue their journey and complete their dissertations within the 51-credit program. The Dissertation Completion Timeline will help guide students, and their dissertation committee. During this course, the ideal goal is for the students (once they have received IRB approval) to recruit their participants and begin their data collection. Should students not be able to meet these goals during this course, they will be afforded the opportunity to move forward into EDU 816 if they have demonstrated they are generally making satisfactory progress, communicating with their committee, and adhering to agreed-upon deadlines.

EDU 816: Dissertation Completion – Phase 3 (Credits: 3)

This is the third of four dissertation courses designed to support and provide the opportunity for students to continue their journey and complete their dissertations within the 51-credit program. The Dissertation Completion Timeline will help guide students, and their dissertation committee. During this course, the ideal goal is for students to analyze their data, report their findings and begin development of Chapter 4 and 5. Should students not be able to meet these goals during this course, they will be afforded the opportunity to move forward into EDU 817 if they have demonstrated they are generally making satisfactory progress, communicating with their committee, and adhering to agreed-upon deadlines.

EDU 817: Dissertation Completion – Phase 4 (Credits: 3)

This is the last of four dissertation courses in which students will finalize interpretation of their findings in Chapter 5, finalize the dissertation, and defend their research to include a PowerPoint Presentation. Students are required to revise the dissertation as needed so that it is of publishable quality and organized using the approved Dissertation Outline. Should students so choose it should also be DUNE-ready so that it can be “published” on the UNE DUNE site. Should students not be able to meet these goals during this course, they will be afforded the opportunity to move forward into the one-credit EDU 818 Dissertation Continuation course if they have demonstrated they are generally making satisfactory progress, communicating with their committee, and adhering to agreed-upon deadlines.

EDU 830: Understanding Educational Theory and Best Practices across Disciplines (Credits: 3)

This course examines educational theory, as well as current best practices in educational research. It is intended to prepare professionals and leaders across all disciplines to connect these theories and best practices in their own organizations and professional environments.

EDU 831: Building the Conceptual and Theoretical Framework (Credits: 3)

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to build their conceptual and theoretical frameworks and establish a practical and theoretical positioning blueprint to serve as the foundation for their approved working topic, the literature review, and the dissertation as a whole. The benefits of visual representations and concept mapping, as well as their choice of a working methodology within the conceptual framework will be reinforced.

Stacking and Transferring of Credits

UNE Online is now offering students the opportunity to transfer up to four 3-credit courses from their previous UNE post-master’s coursework or two 3-credit courses from doctoral studies from an outside institution. Students who transfer four 3 credit courses into the program have the potential to graduate in less than three years. 

Note : Students must complete the entire Ed.D. degree within five years. Under highly unusual conditions, students may petition for an extension beyond five years.

Please note: If your goal is to become an administrator in the State of Maine, and you currently have your master’s degree, the 30-credit CAGS in Advanced Educational Leadership is the program that would lead to Building Administrator 040 certification in the State of Maine. If you will be working as an administrator outside of the State of Maine, UNE Online highly recommends that you research your specific state requirements for entry-level into assistant principal or principal positions before entering this (or any) program.

What is the difference between Ed.D. and Ph.D.?

The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) is different from a Ph.D. because the Ed.D. focuses on applied practice whereas the Ph.D. is more research-focused.

Is the program accredited?

The University of New England is regionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). This is the same accrediting body that accredits most nonprofit New England colleges and universities, such as those found on this list .

What is unique about the Ed.D. program at UNE Online?

The embedding of the doctoral dissertation development within the entire program makes the Ed.D. program at UNE Online unique. Many doctoral programs, whether they are face-to-face, hybrid, or online, start off with coursework and then only start to look at the dissertation materials late in the program. This allows far too much time to pass without refining the dissertation topic. At UNE Online, students begin to work on their topic exploration starting the very moment they do their admissions essay.

This curricular structure is also a major reason why our program has so few “all-but-dissertation” (ABD) students. ABD is a somewhat common issue in doctoral programs in which students complete their coursework but, for a variety of reasons, never finish or present and defend their final dissertation. By spreading out the work over the course of the program rather than all at the end, we strongly position our students to complete and present their dissertation on time.

Your diploma will specify that you graduated with a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from the University of New England.

As an online student, how will I present and defend my dissertation?

Our Ed.D. program is 100% online, and this includes your dissertation. You will present and defend your dissertation to your committee online through Zoom or a similar software. There is no residency requirement for the Ed.D. at UNE, so you’ll never have to come to campus–unless you’d like to come join our annual Commencement Ceremony, that is!

How long will it take to earn my Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)?

We have carefully structured the Ed.D. so that you can earn your doctoral degree within three years (or fewer, if you have transfer credits). However, students can take up to five years to complete their degree if any issues arise.

What are the current admissions requirements for the Ed.D. program?

Generally speaking, admission requirements include proof of earning a master’s degree from a regionally-accredited institution or its international equivalent, your resume, an application essay, and two completed application recommendation forms. Do I currently have to be in a leadership position to qualify for this program?

No, you do not have to currently hold a leadership position to qualify for the Ed.D. However, you should show a capacity to grow as a learner and apply new knowledge in a meaningful way. This can be demonstrated in your supporting application materials such as your resume and/or the application essay. Please note any additional admission requirements as well.

Do you accept transfer credits into the Doctor of Education program?

Yes, we do accept transfer credits. Outlined below are the possible transfer circumstances.

Students who are currently, or previously, enrolled in a University of New England College of Professional Studies (UNE-CPS) CAGS or PMC program may apply to transfer up to four 3-credit (maximum of twelve credits) UNE-CPS education courses earned in these programs. Transfer courses for this circumstance must be: 

• Taken and completed in a UNE-CPS CAGS or PMC program
• Taken within five years of application
• Worth 3 credits
• Completed with a grade of “B” or better
• Applies to UNE-CPS courses only

Students who are currently, or previously, enrolled in a doctoral program at another institution may apply to transfer up to two 3-credit courses earned toward this program.

Transfer courses must be:

• Taken at a regionally accredited institution
• Classified as doctoral level earned in a terminal degree program
• Equivalent to one of the required program courses or an elective course that meets programmatic goals
• Applies to external doctoral programs only

Admissions Information

In order to be eligible for admission into our EdD program, you must meet all of the following criteria.

• Master's degree required, preferably in a healthcare-related field, from a regionally accredited institution.
• Master's degree GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Admissions essay rubric score.
• Interview rubric score.
• Meet   State Authorization   requirements, if not a Nebraska resident.

Requirements

To be considered for admission, the following items must be submitted to the Admissions Office:

• NMC online application form
• Official college transcripts from graduating institutions and/or official transcripts containing completed doctoral or in-progress coursework
• Résumé or curriculum vitae
• Application essay
• Select qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a phone interview with two NMC faculty members using a standardized interview process and scoring method

Aimed at increasing the number of qualified nurse faculty,   NFLP loans   cover the cost of tuition, fees and books for part-time or full-time enrollment.

Following completion of the advanced education program,   up to 85% of the loan may be cancelled if the borrower works as a full-time nurse faculty for a prescribed period of time.

Organizational Leadership

Healthcare leadership.

This course provides the theoretical foundation for role development and skills required to identify health needs at a population level and strategies to improve population outcomes. The course focus is on translational research and the application of evidence-based concepts essential to the advancement of population-based health. Analysis of the impact of social, cultural, and ecological systems across various populations will be emphasized throughout the course.

Corequisite: EDD 880

This is the first of a four-course series that provides an opportunity for the doctoral student to participate in the completion of a scholarly project. This course will focus on identifying a practice problem and appropriate intervention within a specific population upon which to focus a doctoral scholarly project.

Prerequisites: SSC 730, SSC 734, IDS 742. Corequisite: EDD 880

This is the second of a four-course series that provides an opportunity for the student to participate in the completion of a scholarly project. The student will incorporate the essentials of scientific writing in the completion of a Doctoral Scholarly Project proposal.

This is the third of a four-course series that provides an opportunity for the doctoral student to participate in the completion of a scholarly project. The student will refine, implement, analyze data, and evaluate results of the Doctoral Scholarly Project.

Our 54-credit program can be completed in as few as 36 months - or on a flexible schedule based on your professional schedule or personal preference.

We admit three cohorts per year: Spring, Summer, and Fall.  Students typically register for two courses (six credit hours) per trimester for nine trimesters.  Cohorts have a limited amount of space, so applying early is recommended.

Dr Andrew Stapleton has a Masters and PhD in Chemistry from the UK and Australia. He has many years of research experience and has worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate at a number of Universities. Although having secured funding for his own research, he left academia to help others with his YouTube channel all about the inner workings of academia and how to make it work for you.
