Create Your Own Speech Therapy Materials – It’s Easier Than You Might Think!

Create Your Own Speech Therapy Materials – It’s Easier Than You Might Think!

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, planning out your speech therapy sessions is likely a large – and important – part of your job. Every student has their own unique challenges…and there’s not always a worksheet available to target a particular student’s communication goal. So, how can you compensate? If you haven’t considered developing your own speech therapy materials, you may discover it’s the perfect way to develop materials that are exactly what you need.

These websites–some little-known and some popular–may not immediately come to mind as tools for developing speech therapy materials. However, they are still worth checking out!

Spatial Concepts and Visual Support Speech Therapy Materials

Pictures for speech therapy are critical when putting together activities…and luckily, you can find beautiful, royalty-free stock photos in tons of places! Sites such as Pixabay , Pexels , and Stocksnap , have hundreds of high-resolution images added weekly ( free from copyright restrictions ), while Max Pixel has thousands (and in some cases, millions!) of free images available. Or – if you decide you’d prefer more decorative graphics with which to create games, worksheets, etc. – I highly recommend Scrappin Doodles or KPM Doodles .

Articulation Speech Therapy Materials

When seeking word lists addressing specific phonemes, Home Speech Home is a great resource. There, you’ll find words that address articulation, apraxia, language, phonology, and stuttering for both children and adults. You’ll also find lists that address a variety of language skills (e.g., question asking, following directions, antonyms, synonyms, sequencing, metaphors, and multiple-meaning words) as well as lists that address social language skills. Simply select the skills you are targeting, copy the items onto PowerPoint slides, add a photo or vector from one of the free resources referenced earlier, and voila! You have created a skill-specific therapy tool!

Never Underestimate the Power of Pinterest!

Put it all together .

A photo editor, collage maker, and graphic designer all-in-one, iPiccy is an invaluable (and FREE) resource for combining images and text to create your speech therapy masterpiece. Its editor is an easy-to-use, no-download web-based tool to combine photos and text. Once completed, you can download the final product as an easy-to-distribute image file.

A World Full of Free Speech Therapy Materials

As you can see, for a Speech-Language Pathologist with the time and inclination to get a bit creative, there are a TON of free resources available to create your own speech therapy materials!

how to make speech therapy materials

Hi! I'm Lindsey!

I’m a pediatric SLP who specializes in the R sound. Fun fact- I actually used to dread the R but after dedicating a lot (like…  a lot a lot ) of time to researching and troubleshooting… I now love it! So much, in fact, that I currently spend my days treating “R kids” via my private practice and creating R resources and continuing education for SLPs via Speechy Things. I’m so glad you found me! Let’s “Rock the R” together!

Went to 365 Days and read the guest post! PowerPoint – who would have guessed?! Question though…how do you get the slide you create to print 8 1/2 x 11 (or letter size). Mine keeps wanting to print the slide as is which would make it landscape. Am I doing something wrong?

08/18/2012 at 9:04 pm

You can choose Vertical instead of landscape. File. Page Set up. Then change where is says ‘Slides’

That post was so helpful! The Picasa recommendation was great – thanks for the suggestion!

Speech Language Therapy Materials

Welcome to my speech-language therapy materials page!

My professional philosophy is to keep speech-language therapy as authentic as possible.

Learning happens when it is natural and meaningful. Therefore, you won't find a lot of useless worksheets or "out-of-context" games. To me, this isn't best practice and causes tedious planning.

Speech Language Therapy Materials

I will break down my speech-language therapy materials by age and setting.

Early Intervention and Preschool

I buy all of my own toys these days.

Therefore, I MUST make sure my materials contain:

  • Versatility: Can this material be used for more than one goal?
  • Functionality: Is the toy portable? Can I move it from room to room?
  • Price: It is reasonable?
  • Durability: Will the toy survive kids dropping, kicking and/or throwing it?
  • Compatible with age group/goals: Is it functional? Does it target goals?

I am making videos of my favorite  speech therapy toys . Check them out here!

Therapy Activities

To access our games, scroll to the top of the page and click on activities. Now, click on activities by age or disorder and explore our free games.

I divided this book into the following chapters:

  • Simple Story Structure (SOOO Important!)
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Vocabulary Learning (Crucial!)

The best part is that the whole book can be used as parent handouts!

How to Organize Speech Therapy Materials by Theme

Jul 10, 2021

This blog post will tell you all the best tips for organizing your themed therapy materials, so you can quickly find the activities you need!

Raise your hand if you start the year strong with organization, and by the end of September, you find yourself scouring through laundry piles of resources and worksheets. I know I can’t be the only one out there! I decided to get serious about how to organize my speech therapy materials by themes. Here are some ways you can organize themed therapy materials, so you don’t have to constantly find yourself thinking, “I swear I put that articulation packet in this folder…..”

How to Organize Speech Therapy Materials When You Are Using Them

One thing I invested in is these file storage crates . They are so easy to find and such a game-changer.   You can find these file storage crates at Staples, Target, Walmart , or Amazon.  You want to make sure the crate will fit the hanging file folders legal and letter-sized folders. I used the legal size so it is wider and can fit books and wider folders better. Some will fit the As you can see in the picture, I label each file folder with my themes. When I’m looking for a particular themed activity, I’ll know exactly where to look in the crate which saves me a ton of time. This is especially helpful for organizing themed therapy materials for my whole classroom or push-in activities. When I first started organizing with crates, I quickly realized the file folders were essential! Without them, my materials turned into another pile, but this time they were in a crate instead of my desk!

Speech Material Organization with Zipper Pouches

how-to-organize-speech-therapy-materials

Suppose you love having all your themed materials together but don’t have time to organize them every day perfectly. In that case, you need to learn how to organize speech therapy materials functionally so you can quickly clean up after a long day!

Using file pouches from Dollar Tree or zipper pouches on Amazon (affiliate link included .) Like the crates, they are super easy to find and an excellent organizational investment. These zip pouches are perfect for those themed activities that require a lot of components. For example, crafts, core word squares, books, and sentence strips. It’s super easy to keep all of the themed components in one place with these pouches. You can grab them and transport the speech therapy materials easily around campus.

A quick tip: I recommend purchasing more durable, plastic ones if you are interested in buying these pouches. This helps keep your materials from bending or creasing, and they don’t “flop” as much for easier storage.

Organize Your Story Themed Materials in a Scrapbook Box

This blog post will tell you all the best tips for organizing your themed therapy materials, so you can quickly find the activities you need!

Scrapbook boxes are a great tool to organize themed materials and lesson plans. These boxes are wide and deep enough to store your theme-related books and companion activities.

The best place to find these scrapbook boxes is at Michaels .

I love these scrapbook boxes because I can use them to store the books I want, the activities, any pouches I have for my loose cards and materials, craft examples I want to use, and all of my visual supports. They are so easy to label, grab, use, and reorganize at the end of my day. I’ve cut down so much time on my planning and organizing once I started using these scrapbook boxes.

Check out my video on Facebook or Instagram to see what my scrapbook box and pouch organizational systems look like using an ocean theme!

Use Binders to Organize Your Speech Materials for Themes

how-to-organize-speech-therapy-materials

In binders, you can store your theme’s word lists, lesson plan notes, speech therapy worksheets, visual supports, and flashcards!

One of my MOST favorite office supply finds is the binder envelope pouches because you can put flashcards and task cards in the pouch and easily store them in your themed binder.

Because we serve different ages and skill levels, keeping a graphic organizer with task cards in the same place is excellent. For all the binder office supplies, head to my Amazon storefront .

You can use the Avery tab dividers to organize materials by skill, such as articulation, receptive language, vocabulary, etc. Or, you can put activities in the binder by grade level and type, such as prek-1st, 2nd-3rd, open-ended games, and visual supports.

Use Zipper Pouches and Bins to Keep Sensory Bins Neat

One thing I love to incorporate into my therapy is themed sensory bins. However, these sensory bins and the loose materials I put in them can get super messy and time-consuming to organize. Using zipper pouches and a storage bin has helped keep my sensory bin materials neat. First, I store the loose cards or small toys in smaller zipper pouches. Then, I store the “sensory” materials in their zipper pouch. You can then place the sensory bin filler, smaller items, and materials all in one larger zipper pouch. Then, when it’s time for you to assemble your sensory bin, you can grab the zipper pouch and all the contents are together. Check out this blog post for more details .

How to create the perfect speech therapy theme unit

March 8, 2021

When I first started working, I only did speech therapy theme activities around Christmas time.  There was no Instagram back then, so my therapy ideas came from the Super Duper catalog and things I made on my own.

It wasn’t until I got connected to the broader SLP world that I realized the magic of using themes .  It seriously cut my planning time in half!  Now, I like to plan by the month and incorporate a different theme each week (or sometimes 2).

how to create the perfect speech therapy theme unit

If you slowly start gathering materials for your themed therapy, your planning will be covered for years to come.  You’ll be able to pull out your themed bins and packets year after year.

Obviously, there are evergreen materials and resources that are absolutely essential.  Those are usually student-specific, and I can easily use them alongside my themes.

So how do we build a unit around speech therapy themes ?  Maybe you’re new to themes like I was.  Or you’ve tried it but could never make the materials work for your students’ goals.

Check out these tips for creating your perfect speech therapy theme unit !

If you’re a book therapy girl like me, you’ve got to incorporate that literacy-based speech into your sessions.  Books are the perfect way to start building your theme.  Hit up your school library, local library, thrift store, or borrow some from a friend if the budget is tight.

st patrick's day books

Look for different book series that span different seasons and holidays.  Here are a few of my favorites:

  • There Was an Old Lady series
  • How to Catch a series
  • Bear books by Karma Wilson
  • Little Blue Truck series
  • The Night Before books
  • Biscuit books

Open-ended Worksheets

I always like to keep 100 trial sheets, dot marker sheets, and other themed worksheets on hand.  You even can grab a free editable articulation grid template in my last blog post.  It’s super easy to add a few stamps and stickers or insert a few pictures to make it themed!

dinosaur speech therapy theme worksheets

Though I love themed worksheets that are sound specific like my 100 Dots for the Year pack, worksheets that are open-ended make it easy to grab and adjust for any goal.

Hands-on activities

This year, most of my students are preschool and kindergarten age.  With this crowd, you often need to pull out all the hands-on activities to keep them engaged .

farm speech therapy sensory bin

Try a themed sensory bin or create playdough activities around your theme.  Use a pencil or photo box to create small, individual sensory bins.  Fill it with themed erasers, colorful pom poms, and crinkle paper.  Easy peasy.

Want an easy trick to add themed objects and pictures to your sensory bin?  Laminate stickers and put them in your bins!

Another activity to add to your themed speech therapy unit is crafts.  You can use crafts to target any speech goal and kids usually love them.

speech therapy winter craft

I like to use general crafts alongside storybooks.  Here are a few posts with FREE crafts that go with different themed books:

  • Halloween books with DIY crafts
  • Thanksgiving books with DIY crafts
  • Valentine books with DIY crafts
  • Easter books with DIY crafts

If you want crafts that target a specific goal and is also themed , check out my Accordion Craft Bundle .  These can easily be mixed and matched, so that you can target any goal with any theme.

Down here in Louisiana, we have a term for things that are a little something extra…that’s “lagniappe.”  If you have the time and budget, here are a few more items to add to your monthly theme:

  • Toys – There are so many cute toys that are themed.  Look for plastic animals, mini containers, or little packs from the Target dollar spot.
  • Dollar store finds – You can find lots of random objects for your themes at a dollar store.  I have used wall clings, table scatter, ornaments, and lots more in therapy.
  • Amazon finds – I have more ideas in my Amazon store of different little items I’ve used with some of my themes.  It’s a great source for random things you can’t find in your local dollar stores.

My themed mini units have a little bit of worksheets, sensory bin activities, playdough activities, and crafts, if you want a quick boost to get started with themed therapy.  They are both printable and digital , so they work well for teletherapy too.  🙂

I hope some of these ideas inspire you to keep creating fun themes for you students!  Download my FREE monthly plans template and see all my seasonal favorites each week while you’re there!

19 TOP Speech Therapy Materials (SLP Must Haves)

Here are my TOP speech therapy materials- the MUST HAVES for being a school SLP! When I’m working with my speech and language students, there are certain “must have” materials that I need by my side the entire day. These are items that provide quick ways to motivate students or help me provide speech therapy effectively.

must haves: speech therapy materials

This post contains affiliate links, which means we could receive a commission if you click a link and purchase something that we have recommended.

How To Store Your Must Have Materials for Speech Therapy

First, you’ll need a place to store all of these materials, games, and items! I recommend purchasing an art caddy to store the smaller items that you’ll use in most sessions. An art caddy has compartments so you can easily organize your smaller materials. I also prefer an art caddy with a handle, so I can carry it with me “on the go” to speech therapy sessions. You can also leave the art caddy on the desk or speech therapy table if you prefer.

my favorite materials to use during speech therapy sessions!

The MUST HAVES: Speech Therapy Materials List (Amazon Picks)

Here is the complete list of my top must-have speech therapy materials.

  • magnetic wand and chips
  • dry erase dice
  • regular dice
  • foam dot dice
  • sand timers
  • jumping frogs toy
  • generic board game pieces
  • dry erase boards
  • dry erase pockets / sleeves
  • Sensory Fidget Toy
  • Echo Microphone
  • Kids Card Games
  • Travel Tic Tac Toe Game

How To Use Each MUST HAVE Speech Therapy Material

Although having the list is helpful, it’s nice to know WHY I’m recommending these materials for speech therapy. Materials were chosen based on how motivating they were for my students, and how much easier they made it to teach my students.

I tend to prefer doing “hands-on” activities in speech therapy. I also like to incorporate brain breaks and multisensory activities. That said, the day in the life of a school SLP is non-stop. We need materials that are ready to go at that very second.

Here are some ideas for using each of the recommended speech therapy materials:

Simple Motivators for Speech Therapy

  • Magnetic Wand and Chips : You can easily use a magnetic wand and chips as a simple motivator during your speech therapy sessions! Cover an articulation card or question on a worksheet with a chip. After your student says a word or answers a question, he or she can use the wand to pick up the chip. You’d also love pairing your magnetic wand and chips with this articulation tic tac toe activity or this reading comprehension activity .

reading comprehension materials speech therapy

  • Dry Erase Dice : I like using dry erase dice in therapy because I can quickly write any target on the dice using a dry erase marker. For example, if my student is working on naming items in categories, I might write categories on the dice like “holidays”, “days of the week”, and “months of the year”. We erase the word after landing on it, and try to get the dice “clean” before the session ends!
  • Regular Dice : It’s nice to have regular dice on hand. You can pair it with any game, or perhaps your student can say their target articulation word that many times. I often pair a target word with a target number on the dice. We try to roll each number, then cross all of the numbers off, in order to win the game.
  • Foam Dot Dice : I like to keep larger foam dot dice around. This is especially helpful if your student has fine motor difficulties. Plus, they’re just fun!
  • Sand Timers : Sand timers are great! It’s fun to watch time flow as the sand travels! You can use them as brain breaks. If your student is motivated by a sand timer, try pairing it with a toy or sensory fidget of their choice.
  • Glitter Daubers : These are truly a must have material in your speech therapy room! Daubers are wonderful for students with fine motor difficulties. They’re really just perfect for ANY student, however. They make worksheets magical, or just let your student daub after saying a target articulation word!

Quick Games and Toys for Speech Therapy

  • Spot It : I absolutely love playing Spot It in speech therapy! Students across grade and age levels are interested in this game. It’s a super easy way to get a quick brain break in after drill work.
  • Jumping Frogs Toy : This is a quick and easy way to make articulation or phonology practice more fun! Place this phonology worksheet on a table and see if your speech therapy student can make a frog hop to the target word!

phonology speech therapy activities

  • Generic Game Board Pieces : These are just nice to have on hand- you never know when you will need extra players! Also, you can create your own sticky note or poster board games using these pieces.
  • Kids Card Games : I have this particular card game pack for my own kids. My favorite game in this pack is Slap Jack . No reading is required to play this game. Each player takes turns going around in a circle placing a card down without looking at it first. When a red card with a mosquito is placed down, everyone tries to be the first to slap it! This would make any drill-play session exciting .
  • Travel Tic Tac Toe : Tic tac toe is another motivating activity to use in speech therapy. Try out a small travel version for on-the-go sessions, or keep it near on your therapy table.
  • Uno : this classic card game is perfect for your elementary speech therapy students. It’s also small and easy to take on the go, or store in your art caddy. Try pairing it with this articulation activity .

Multisensory Activities and Ideas for Speech Therapy

  • Play Doh : Play dough is a staple in my speech therapy room. I like to buy the small party favor size play doh containers, so my students can have their own. I just feel like this is way more sanitary! Try pairing play doh with s-blend snake smash mats , multisyllabic word mini smash mats , or this articulation manicure activity . First, you’ll just have your student select a play doh color. Then, your student can practice saying a target word. After that, your student can roll up the play doh. Finally, they can practice saying a target word before smashing the dough over the word!

speech therapy smash mat articulation

WikkiStix : WikkiStix is a nice hands-on activity to try in speech therapy! These are essentially wax-covered pieces of colorful yarn that can be shaped, molded, and twisted into whatever creation your student comes up with.

Sensory Fidget Toy : There’s no question that having a few sensory fidget toys on hand during your speech therapy session is a smart move. These can be motivating for many students on your caseload, and can easily be paired with AAC activities.

Echo Microphone : This is a fun way to encourage making noises and sounds during your speech therapy session. This is especially motivating for younger students on your speech caseload. You could also pair it with a turn-taking activity.

Instructional Materials for Speech Therapy

  • Dry Erase Boards : These are an absolute MUST HAVE. I especially love having dry-erase boards around when I’m teaching grammar and sentence structure to my students.

speech therapy materials dry erase board

  • Dry Erase Sleeves : Don’t run to the copier 30x during your chaotic school day! Make a few copies, then use them over and over again with a dry erase marker and dry erase sleeve.
  • Typodont : If you need to show your student lingual-palatal contact, then you’ll want to have a typodont on hand. It’s the perfect visual for showing your student where he or she should be placing their tongue while producing specific speech sounds.

17 Genius Ideas to Organize Your Speech Therapy Room

Speech therapy room organization can be challenging.

How do you organize your speech therapy room to make the most of your space and streamline your workflow?

Many SLP’s are given small spaces to work in, sometimes practically minuscule, especially in schools. Combine that with the fact that you need storage for a huge variety of materials… because we see a myriad of students at different levels and different needs.

If you’re like me, you want to be able to offer hands-on activities to engage children as you work on those speech therapy goals. Games, crafts, sensory bins, toys all need a place. Then there’s your cards, books, worksheets, and if you’re lucky… a tablet or two.

Plus, don’t forget all those office supplies that are essential to cranking out the required paperwork.

Because we all need a little speech therapy room inspiration, I’ve gathered up 17 genius ideas from SLPs and teachers to make it a bit easier to organize your speech therapy room.  Here you go:

Note: I’ve provided suggested links to where you can purchase some of these items for your convenience, so you can see what the items look like. They’re not affiliate links, and I’m not receiving any compensation for providing them- hope it’s helpful!

Organizing your office space:

Organize your computer cords. Great idea for organizing your office space. from www.landeeseelandeedo.com

1. Cords:   Label your cords with Washi tape and manage that tangle of computer cables with this pretty and practical solution from Landeelu. When I leave for the summer, I’m required to unplug all the cords and cables to my computer and other devices. That usually results in a tangled nightmare when I get back! “Where does this cord go?” is a frustrating game I’ll no longer need to play with this tip.

2. Forms: Store frequently needed forms in a  letter-sized pocket wall organizer like this one at Walmart. I have this filled with papers I frequently need to grab: therapy logs (if you keep yours on paper), baseline forms, screeners to send to teachers, parent handouts, welcome letters, and supply lists for new students.

3. Files: With the crazy caseloads many of us have, file folder organization in our speech therapy room is essential!

Get hanging file folders if your file cabinet will accommodate them! It helps prevent all those folders from slumping and getting hard to find. Use color-coded dividers in your file cabinet to organize your workflow.

You can purchase pretty ones, or simply label and laminate construction paper like I did here.   Move your folders through the workflow as you address them. You’ll be able to see at a glance who needs an evaluation, which reports you need to write and who needs that ARD or IEP meeting set up.

Organize your workflow with colored file dividers

If you want to step it up a few notches, make your file cabinet oh-so-pretty with these bright dividers. Head to Speech Room Organization: How to Do This Pretty, organized File Cabinet Makeover.

Speech therapy room ideas- an organized file cabinet makeover. An open file cabinet with bright rainbow-colored tabs stapled to the top of each folder with printed labels to organize the SLP's workflow from referrals to meetings and more.

Be sure to read to the end, where you’ll find the link to get the free, editable template when you subscribe to Speech Sprouts newsletter.

4. Clean keyboards: Here’s a neat trick- before you toss out those old sticky notes, run them between your keys on your keyboard to clean out the dust and… crumbs.  Yeah, unfortunately, it’s true, I do eat over my computer at lunch.

You should get out of your speech therapy room often for lunch, but lunch is usually time to check and respond to emails, right? Sigh.

Use a sticky note to clean between your keyboard keys

5. Office supplies : Organize office and therapy supplies in a toolbox, especially if you have no room for a desk in your small space. Label each drawer yourself or find plenty of cute pre-made labels that are editable on TpT .

Organizing your therapy materials:

Articulation bins organized by phoneme

6. Printable Materials can be stored by theme or skills. Store them in clear plastic bins like the ones above so you can easily see what you have. I love the bins above for organizing my articulation materials. They can handle bulky manipulatives in addition to printables.  Read more about How to Organize for Grab and Go Articulation Therapy.

Use poly envelopes and binder clips to organize TPT  materials

Ways to store card decks:

Photo boxes are great for storing cards in speech therapy

10. Store cards in a photo storage case like the one above from Michael’s or Walmart. These also come in clear if you want to easily see the contents. These can fit two packs of cards per box if the cards aren’t too large. Clip each pack with binder clips to keep them together.  Add labels so you can find what you need.

11.  Store cards in a hanging shoe organizer. Need your card sets at your fingertips during your speech therapy sessions? Shoe organizers are also great for keeping other materials at hand too… like dice, game pieces, bingo chips and wands, a hand mirror, flashlight, or other items you want to pull out in a hurry.

12. Hole punch frequently used cards and prompts and store them on a binder ring. If you have a metal bookcase or file cabinets near your therapy table, hang ’em there on magnetic utility hooks.

Organizing books in your speech therapy room:

13. Use ice cube bins like this one at Target  as a cheaper alternative to book bins. I like to organize many of my books by theme, so it’s easy to grab and go. Add a cute label to the front of the bin and you are good to go!

14. Organize storybooks alphabetically on a shelf. I do this for the books I use for multiple goals or themes. This way, they’re easy to find by the title. Use paint sticks or simply laminated paper like this.

Alphabetize your storybooks so you can find them by title

Organizing Arts and Crafts Materials:

15. Glue :  Make a couple of glue sponges. Ditch the bottles of white glue and all those glue sticks that your preschoolers mash into their papers and keep these instead. Way less mess for your speech therapy room, and they will last you for months.

Store paint in ketchup bottles

16. Paint : If you use tempera paint with your kiddos, you’ll only want to store small amounts to work with. Empty ketchup bottles make great containers for this.

Oh, and unless you eat a ton of ketchup, you’ll want to send out a note to parents and colleagues to save the bottles for you!

17. Construction Paper: Store construction paper and card stock in hanging file folders in your file cabinet or a bin. A paper organizer on your shelf (if you have room) or a hanging pocket chart also works well.

A few more great organizational tips:

  • Keep things you use the most within reach.
  • Keep only the most needed folders and papers on your desk.
  • Use your wall space to your advantage: hang supplies and materials.
  • File things weekly or better yet daily so your desk doesn’t get piled up.
  • Purge old files!  If you don’t need it forever, mark on files when it can be tossed or shredded.

I hope you found a few ideas you love to help you organize your speech therapy room.

How To Organize Speech Therapy Materials

To be honest, it took me several years to finally be happy with my organization of all my speech therapy materials. I think I waited because I wanted it to be perfect and every container and binder perfectly matching. When I decided on all white binders and clear containers, it didn’t matter if they all varied a little bit because all the labels were the same and visually appealing to the eye.

I realized it was hurting my productivity – all the searching for that specific task card, a certain book filled with the /S/ sound, a themed activity…and WASTING time!! So let me tell you what I did about it!

This post contains some Amazon affiliate links (I receive a tiny commission at NO cost to you).

How I organize my Speech Therapy TpT Articulation Downloads

One thing is- I only have a closet to store my resources in. I don’t have a big fancy room so it’s essential I stay organized.

Worksheets & Printables:

I print hard copies of all my resources and put them in WHITE  1 1/2 inch binders. I decided on white because I know that color is always available if I need to get more. I put a post it note that says, “hard copy” so I don’t accidentally use that sheet in therapy and I know when I need to make new copies. Download these articulation binder labels and these themed binder labels to organize all your resources once and all!

TIP: take all your bound workbooks to Office Max or Staples to have the binding cut off and have them put a 3 hole punch and put them in binders as well! This will change your life – no more slipping workbooks on your shelves!

Articulation Cards / Task Cards:

I use the Akro-Mills Storage Cabinet from Amazon (see pic below) Yes, I spray painted mine to make it pretty. You don’t have to. It holds all my Articulation cards – yes, even the full cans from Super Duper. I love that the drawers pop out easily to take to my table. It’s a great toolbox for holding small essentials you use daily like dice, post it notes, paper clips, etc. Check out how I made my Articulation Toolbox here !

organizing your articulation cards in your speech therapy room

For on the go therapy, (traveling SLPs or push in therapy) I love the colored Michael’s 4×6 storage boxes. They stay closed when I toss them into my therapy bag! You can grab those storage box labels here.

How I organize my articulation cards for speech therapy

Themed & Holiday materials:

I use various sizes of the clear Sterilite brand containers (this is hands down my favorite brand because they stack well on my shelves) and I get them from Walmart, Target, and Amazon . For holidays where I have a lot of resources for like Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and Christmas – I get the large, lidded storage containers . They stack well for long term storage.

SMALL ITEMS (crayons, Velcro, dot markers, mini objects, tongue depressors, small toys, etc) I use these clear shoe boxes  or these square flip lid containers .

LARGE ITEMS (seasonal decor, large toys, inflatables, etc.) I use these large containers or these medium containers .

Download these speech therapy bin labels to help organize them. Again, the more organized you are, you will improve your productivity – no more searching aimlessly for where you put that play doh container or velcro dots! Additionally, you won’t buy things unnecessarily simply because you can’t find it!

The Best Way to Use These Free Speech Therapy Materials

There will always be a high need for speech therapy materials. We had been thinking about ways we could stop SLPs from recreating the wheel.

  • We get emails from SLPs with specific therapy needs and rather than just sending that individual what they need, we wanted to share the love.
  • When we present nationally and internationally, we wanted to give people a link to the materials as well as a way to share with their colleagues.
  • When we reference topics in our blog essays, we wanted to create an environment where the articles point back to one speech and language therapy materials library that was easy to remember.
  • We want to know how we can best help the field of speech pathology. By seeing what people are asking for, it creates a picture of what the biggest problems that the field is facing. Then we can make more free speech therapy materials around those topics and even invite experts in to speak at our conferences.

Fast forward, and our speech therapy materials page and evaluation resources page have dozens of materials that have collectively been downloaded over 100,000 times. They are the two most bookmarked pages that we have.

For those of you that have been following us for years know that this list has grown tremendously! So we wanted to highlight some of the best speech therapy materials above, especially the ones that have been downloaded over 10,000 times. They are organized alphabetically, so if you read about something you like just scroll back up, preview, and download it.

  • Lifeskills English and Spanish Story Communication Boards

Bilingual Speech Therapy Materials

Bilingual speech therapy materials are hard to come by under any circumstance and this issue is the basis for making all of our books  suitable for children who speak multiple languages. Truly all of our materials can be used with bilingual students. Here, we wanted to use this environment to showcase some materials for bilingual speech therapy that aren’t talked about much.
