Movie Review: 100 Tula Para Kay Stella

I was late to watch 100 Tula Para Kay Stella because of the bad reviews but I watched it anyway. Contrary to their reviews, I really appreciated the film, especially the character development of Fidel, and that’s where I’m going with this review.

I’ll be honest, this film shows yet another romanticization of a boy, who I can say may only be in love with the idea of the girl. I guess that’s why a lot of people say 100 Tula Para Kay Stella is a local ripoff of 500 Days of Summer.

It’s all a roller coaster ride that you can actually feel the plot twist being too much to handle. How can you get over someone you loved for the past four years, just because you were a little late in confessing how you feel?

Stella is an aspiring musician who tried everything she can to be in the spotlight. Frustrated as she was, Fidel, on the other hand, still saw her beauty—writing 100 poems as a way to confess his feelings through the years.

My Honest Opinion

I agree with the other reviews about the characters being too chaotic and irrational (and probably don’t have the chemistry to start with), but as I said, I liked Fidel’s character development, especially when it comes to his writing.

He started with mediocre writing, and then we witnessed the progress of his poetry. The same goes for his speech defect, wherein he went from only mumbling three words to confidently singing in front of a crowd.

This may be my favorite piece:

Stella is a very complicated girl, but I can only empathize with her frustration as not everyone can understand the pain of not being enough, of all the demons trying to haunt you every night, and not knowing where to go and what to do next.

What happened to her towards the end could have been better, though. It’s just too heavy to see her stuck in marriage at such a young age, just because she found “the one who understands her”.

Fidel romanticized Stella in a way that he focused on his love for her, writing happy prose about her without any idea that she was suffering.

100 Tula Para Kay Stella may be at its most painful part when they’re throwing the saddest words at each other—when Fidel finally told her that he loves her. There’s nothing left to do but cry.

Bakit Fidel, ilang salita ba kailangan mo? I LIKE YOU, GUSTO KITA, MAHAL KITA, I LOVE YOU! Bakit di mo sinabi? – Stella

My major takeaway from this movie is to confess your feelings as early as you can. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

An Honest Review Of '100 Tula Para Kay Stella' By A Fan Of Unconventional Love Stories

movie review 100 tula para kay stella

The Long Plot, Sans Spoilers

Stella (Bela Padilla) is your quintessential cool girl. She sings in a band, has an easy way about her, and can charm just about anyone. One of the people she charms is Fidel (JC Santos) who is the opposite of cool. He is shy and awkward, and he stutters.

Stella develops a fondness for Fidel, and soon they are inseparable. Fidel falls for Stella, but can't seem to actually blurt it out. So, he uses poetry to express how he feels.

The Short, Honest Plot

100 Tula Para Kay Stella   is a sincere — sometimes heartbreaking — story about beginnings, endings, and everything else in between.

The Main Actors And Where You Last Saw Them

Bela Padilla as Stella

This talented actress was last seen in the movie Luck At First Sight (She wrote the screenplay for it!) and the teleserye My Dear Heart .

JC Santos as Fidel

This theater actor-turned-TV star was last seen in the celebrity game show I Can Do That , and in the Cinemalaya film Nabubulok.

Prince Stefan as Chuck

The former Starstruck runner-up was last seen in the 2016 comedy film Working Beks and is a regular in the primetime teleserye A Love to Last.

Mayton Eugenio as Danica

This commercial model and actress was last seen in the GMA teleserye D'Originals.

Did You Know?

1.This movie is one of 12 films selected for the first-ever Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino , a partnership between the Film Development Council of the Philippine (FDCP) and commercial theaters to exclusively screen Filipino films nationwide on August 16-22 in honor of Buwan ng Wika. The 12 films were selected by a panel of noteworthy members of the film industry composed of Lee Briones, Iza Calzado, Oggs Cruz, Manet Dayrit, Ricky Lee, Erik Matti, and Jose Javier Reyes.

2. Jason Paul Laxamana, who wrote and directed this film, was also at the helm of movies like The Third Party starring Angel Locsin, Zanjoe Marudo, and Sam Milby, and Ang Taba Ko Kasi starring Cai Cortez. He also wrote the screenplay for the Cinema One Originals movie 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten starring Khalil Ramos and Jameson Blake.

3. The movie is set in the mid-2000s, so you will see a lot of things you probably don't see a lot of nowadays —l ike cassette tapes, Walkmans, and non-smartphones.

4. The soundtrack of 100 Tula Para Kay Stella features a couple of old-school Rivermaya songs like " Balisong " and "241."

5. Try to make it to the movie theater a few minutes early so you don't miss a Sine Kabataan short film called Pahimakas (Farewell). Sine Kabataan is a short film competition which was opened to filmmakers 18 to 24 years old. The winners will be showcased along with their full-feature counterparts during Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

What I Think:

Out of all the films lined up for the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino , I was most excited about this one. I had seen the trailer and it looked like a lighthearted love story—the perfect first film to watch for this festival.

It begins with the two lead characters meeting for the first time at the start of their college life. There's an innocence and wonder about how their friendship begins.

Bela Padilla was refreshing as Stella. She effectively brought to life the many nuances of Stella's character. I found myself loving her, getting confused by her, coming close to hating her, but in the end, I just had to embrace Stella as she was.

JC Santos was a revelation as Fidel. He, too, was effective in showing the progression of Fidel's character. You will see him bloom from being a shy, awkward guy to someone more confident. Bonus: You will also hear JC sing in this movie!

The film has the ability to move your heart if you will allow it. It shows how powerful love, kindness, friendship, and acceptance can be in someone's life.

What my friend thinks:

I didn't expect to be so touched by this movie. I found myself in tears at some points in the story. It was funny and also heartbreaking at times. Definitely a good movie to watch to cap a stressful work week! -  Rizza

I would recommend it to:

Anyone who's ever experienced unrequited love, and anyone who wants to watch a quality Pinoy film during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

100 Tula Para Kay Stella Review: Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2017

100 Tula Para Kay Stella Review : It’s easy to understand how 100 Tula Para Kay Stella became the top-grossing film on the opening day of Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2017 . The lead actors (who delivered remarkable performances, by the way) definitely brought in a throng of eager fans, but the film’s appeal came primarily from being relatable, and how it speaks the language of young Filipinos. It was tear-jerking, it was amusing, but sadly, it wasn’t new.

In this film by Jason Paul Laxamana, 100 Na Tula Para Kay Stella is a coming-of-age story about a stuttering college boy named Fidel, who writes poems to express his love for the campus star Stella. As they go through college and become close friends, Fidel keeps on writing his poems. When he reached his 100 th dedication, Fidel decides to finally give the poems to Stella to confess his love.

100 Tula Para Kay Stella Trailer

100 tula para kay stella review.

I tried to pinpoint why 100 Tula Para Kay Stella felt strangely familiar. Have I read a similar story before? Was the plot exceedingly relatable, it makes you think it has happened to you in real life? It was towards the end of the film when I realized that the plot was considerably similar to that of Marc Webb’s 500 Days of Summer . Putting the non-linear plot of “500 Days” aside, the awkward guy meets carefree gal premise is there, so is the friend-zoning phase, the timestamps (in the case of “100 Tula”, the indicators of time are the poems, compared to “500 Days”’ number of days.), even the endings of the two movies echo each other . If you’ve seen how 500 Days of Summer ended, you pretty much know how 100 Tula Para Kay Stella would turn out in the end. Yep, Autumn and all.

100 na tula para kay stella bela padilla

But this doesn’t mean 100 Na Tula Para Kay Stella, is a bad movie altogether. If there’s one thing that the filmmakers did right, it’s casting JC Santos and Bela Padilla for the lead roles. The two actors’ brilliant performances, coupled with their effortless chemistry carried the whole film. The script also felt natural and despite the poems, not formulaic; making Stella and Fidel’s conversations seem spontaneous and realistic.

100 tula para kay stella pista ng pelikulang pilipino 2017

500 Days of Summer or not, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella still is worth your time and ticket. It’s not a typical love-story as far as Pinoy romance films are concerned.

'100 Tula Para Kay Stella' Will Make You Feel, Break, and Want to Risk It All for Love

movie review 100 tula para kay stella

In case you didn't know, the  Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino has already started and there are a lot of Filipino movies that you should be watching until August 22!

Our first movie?  Jason Paul Laxamana 's,  100 Tula Para Kay Stella , which stars Bela Padilla and  JC Santos .

Fidel was born with a speech defect, which makes him stutter when he uses more than three words in a sentence. During his freshman year in college, he meets rocker girl Stella and falls for her. Throughout their entire college, he writes 100 poems dedicated to the girl he loves to make her fall in love with him.

If You're Into Crime Movies, Make Sure You Watch 'Nabubulok' This Week

*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***

  • Stella as Fidel's fierce friend.

Yes, it's a cliché. And yes, we thought we grew tired of stories involving friendzones  already. But we found ourselves falling in love with Bela's portrayal of Stella, the rocker chick Fidel is crazy in love with. Bela as Stella is effortless that we're almost convinced she's not acting at all!

We found ourselves wondering why she just couldn't see Fidel's feelings, but we realize later on why she is the way she is, which made us love her even more. Bela's Stella doesn't need rescuing, as what most guys around her think. She's not the usual broken girl who just seeks love and attention and salvation. She is just a girl who's also trying to figure things out and to make her dreams come true—even if her ways don't always seem right and even if she ends up making more mistakes.

  • Chuck, Fidel's roommate and close friend.

Fidel might have lost Stella when he moves to Manila, but he finds another fierce friend in Chuck ( Prince Stefan ). Just like Stella, Chuck becomes Fidel's constant source of strength, courage, fun, and confidence—especially when he finally decides to confess his feelings for Stella through a book of poems he made for her.

  • Memorabilia from the early 2000s ♥

Call us old souls, but we were really delighted to see the existence of Nokia phones, cassette tapes (even when CDs already existed at this time!), and posters of 98 Degrees and Mariah Carey in this movie. The team's attention to detail is amazing! From the references (Rivermaya's "Balisong," PLEASE) to the fashion (we love Bela's laid-back fashion, BTW), we couldn't help but look back on our younger days and remember all the foolish things we did. Hehehe.

Watch 'Requited' If You're in the Mood for a Surprising Love Story

You will surely find yourself strongly identifying with Fidel—not only because of his unconditional love for Stella but because of his transition from a clumsy nerd to a brave and confident spirit in the second half of the film. As Stella said during their Freshmen Night, college is a time to know ourselves better—and he did just that.

The changes Fidel goes through are also reflected in his poems for Stella. While he writes the first ones by hand in Filipino, he transitions to doing so in the second half in English and using a laptop—this time, without forcing a rhyme. Says a lot about how much he's got a hold and control over his feelings.

Fidel's character also proves that while he may seem like such a loser, which is how Stella's ex-BF described him, he doesn't need saving—no one does—not even when he breaks his heart during that heartbreaking confrontation scene.

At the end of the day, Fidel is just a person who's also trying to figure things out on his own, which is how we all live life, anyway. And that's not a bad thing; it's just how we learn and we live.

  • That heartbreaking confrontation scene with Mt. Arayat as a backdrop.

movie review 100 tula para kay stella

After a long,  loooong  journey, Stella finally reads all of Fidel's 99 poems—the 100th poem disappeared into thin paper, UGH. But by the time she does, she's married and is expecting a baby with someone else. Fidel is, of course, heartbroken and miserable because he spent years loving Stella in secret.

It's easy to hate on Stella for not waiting. It's easy to hate on Fidel for not realizing that there's no such thing as right timing. And it's easy to hate on everyone from the production team (LOL, sorry, guys!) because why. Can't. They. Just. Leave. These. Lovers. Be.

But then again, that's reality for you, dearest  Candy  Girls. There really is no right time. There's just time. Most of the time, the right time for you isn't the right time for another. It's the same with Fidel and Stella. The right time for Fidel wasn't the right time for Stella and vice versa. There is no right time, only the right words. How many words do you need to confess your feelings, anyway?

Should you watch it ?

YOU SHOULD! Not only will you love the gorgeous shots in the movie (now we want to go and see Mt. Arayat!), you'll also find yourself crying your hearts out for Fidel and Stella's love story that never quite happened, which was told in a brilliant but heartbreaking way.  100 Tula Para Kay Stella will make you feel and break and want to risk it all for the one you love.

100 Tula Para Kay Stella is one of the 12 movies featured in the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino . You can catch them in cinemas nationwide from August 16 to 22.

Dreamy rockstars and heartsick poets: A review of 100 Tula Para Kay Stella

Kayla t. cadenas , online media and angela natividad.

August 22, 2017

Jason Paul Laxamana’s “teen” romance 100 Tula Para Kay Stella (2017) is pegged to be this year’s Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino’s romantic entry, but the film felt distant from the genre.

Bela Padilla plays the rigorously ambitious but frustrated rock singer Stella, while JC Santos portrays the insecure and stuttering Fidel. They first meet as freshmen in college. Fidel is immediately attracted to Stella, who wears black lipstick and sings in a band. This attraction fuels him to write a series of love poems that he dedicates to her, but never quite gets to her. Fidel’s heartsick poetry continues throughout the movie and their college lives.

There is little to be said about the romantic chemistry between the characters in the film, and this is not entirely the fault of either Padilla or Santos. The problem is that Laxamana has not made a love story for them to portray. Immediately apparent to the audience is that 100 Tula Para Kay Stella is a hugot film. Between Stella and Fidel lies an abundance of miscommunication, heartsick glances, and devoted pining that builds for a climax that ultimately falters in its impact.

Similarly, halfway through the two-hour film, one cannot help but yearn for a shift in perspective. The movie is set almost entirely in Fidel’s perspective, with the few intermittent scenes of Stella’s life appearing only to be discussed in relation to Fidel’s.

Overall, Laxamana’s movie settles surprisingly heavily on audiences. It hits viewers more like a somber coming-of-age movie with little breaks for good humor than any real kind of love story.

MOVIE REVIEW: 100 Tula para kay Stella (2017) [2 of 2]

He took her with a sigh.

— William Blake, “Never Seek to Tell Thy Love” (1863)

100 Tula Para Kay Stella follows the story of Fidel (JC Santos), a college student, who enamored of Stella (Bela Padilla), a fellow Psychology major and an aspiring musician. Impeded by an unspecified speech defect, he sought to express his feelings in juvenile, idealistic quatrains, hoping to complete a hundred of them and even more so in getting the strength to present it to Stella.

Fidel’s secret desire is astronomical, however, like that of a young child wishing to touch (or to be one with) a stars. Fidel is withdrawn, shy and awkward, perhaps as a result of his fears of being rejected by society because of his disability. Stella, on the other hand, has high ambitions; she herself wants to be a (rock) star like Avril Lavigne, and uses every opportunity to get closer to her dreams in order to escape the dreary and lonely life she was living with her sisters since being orphaned by both parents. Yet, despite these differences, Fidel remains faithful to his one love, enduring her every whims and patiently waiting for her (even as Stella sleeps with an ex-boyfriend in order to get connected to his music-video director).

Said to be based on a youthful episode in the life of its director (John Paul Laxamana),  100 Tula  is mostly set near Mount Arayat in Pampanga, visible yet distant. And like Mount Arayat, Stella remains an omnipresent character throughout the film: always near (even when you don’t see her), but always far (even when she’s there). We follow the story of Fidel, but really, we see more of Stella in his thoughts and words: the Romantic Ideal which is never fated to be his. Although writing quatrains and verses for a loved one is deeply rooted in Filipino culture (think as early as Francisco Balagtas writing  Kay Selya, which was written when he was incarcerated), Fidel fails to make his poetry transcend his basest feelings (if not Neruda, who also wrote 100 Sonnets of Love ), partly because he latches onto his limerence and also because he fails to overcome his fears and express himself in more concrete ways than just poetry. (Even Stella herself admitted from the start that she was willing to overlook his stuttering.)

Meanwhile, Fidel stands as a mute (yet unwitting) witness to Stella’s decline, even after helping whether with her academics or with finding a place to stay the night. Externally, Stella tries to project herself as a strong, determined woman. But she also fails to understand that it was here insistent escapism, her persistent desire to chase the limelight, was the one thing hindering her dreams. Beneath her shell, she, too, is unable to express her true feelings with sincerity. She is self-aware of the potency of her beauty, of how her being the object of every men’s desire can also cause their downfall and hers (even the sparse, minimalistic music that is set in most of Stella’s scenes is enchanting, beguiling and terrifying at the same time). And when that one person who sees through her real self—Fidel—reaches out to her, she walks away, afraid of all possibilities (both good and bad) that might have been had she relented and surrendered herself to him.

By the movie’s climax at the other side of Mount Arayat, Fidel and Stella have come to confront each other with a lot of introspection, and even more regrets. JC Santos and Bela Padilla delivers what is probably the movie’s best scene: every word they say to each other is weighed by things left unsaid, things they can only now see clearly because of circumstances they could have prevented or resolved, but didn’t.  100 Tula Para Kay Stella  is a wistful tale of an old love, a bittersweet reminder of missed opportunities and might-have-beens.

The Random Wanderer

Ready to take off and fly!

100 Tula Para Kay Stella (Movie Review) More of a personal reflection…

movie review 100 tula para kay stella

After watching this movie in the cinema, I’m excited to write a review for this story. I wanted to share the movie experience and the feelings that transpired while I was watching it.

I know the story is a bit cliche. Shy Boy meets Rocker Bad Ass Chick but there’s something in it that attracted you to watch the movie.

One word to describe the movie.

It brought me some bitter sweet memories. I remember that once I was in Fidel’s shoes. The only difference is that I was the only one fighting in that battle and it was one sided. I could really relate to him and how he expresses himself through writing poems.

I love writing too… Back in the days I spent my time composing cheesy poems and lyrics about him.

I, myself went through that phase in life that you felt like your world only revolved towards that person. You imagined yourself and that person having a future together.

In life, people look for an outlet to release their emotions through writing a song, poems, a story and spoken poetry. It could be anything as long as you could deliver the message loud and clear to that special someone.

Fidel and Stella were relatable characters. You couldn’t help but root for them.

The actors did an awesome job of portraying them. I felt the sincerity and heartfelt thoughts of the characters but I have a soft spot to Fidel maybe because I could see my old self to him.

I realized while I’m watching this movie sometimes even if you mutually love each other it doesn’t mean that you’ll end up together. It suck at times that fate and timing could be your worst enemy.

movie review 100 tula para kay stella

In life, there’s no such thing as perfect timing it is all or nothing. It’s better to risk your everything than doing nothing.

Since the movie is set in the 2000s, I couldn’t help myself but smile seeing Nokia phones, cassette tapes, floppy disks and even friendster! Haha Those things were part of my teen years.

What I love about this movie is that it tackles the life of a struggling young adult in how to reach for your dreams, setting your priorities and how mature enough you’ll take stand for your decisions. It’s not your typical love story it’s more that it speaks to the realities of life.

The ending is something that I anticipated. Yes, it hurts like hell. Damn, I cried at the end of the movie. The movie did a great job in showing reality about life, love, moving on and self discovery.

At the first part of the story, you’ll laugh your heart out, fall in love with the characters, have your heart broken and learn to move on.

It’s a must watch movie. (Yes, tagus-tagusan ang feels.) Make sure you prepare your heart and bring some tissues with you.

100 Poems for Stella

  • Throughout his four years in college, Fidel, a stuttering student, tries to finish 100 poems dedicated to Stella, an aspiring but frustrated rock star, to win her heart.
  • In 2004, Fidel Lansangan (JC Santos) and Stella Puno (Bela Padilla) meet each other as freshmen college students in Pampanga pursuing a bachelor's degree in Psychology. They became friends despite differences in their personalities; Fidel is an honor student with a speech impediment and loves poetry while Stella is a rocker with a tough and confident attitude who prefers to jam with her band rather than to do her studies. Fidel begins to write poems to express his love to Stella but does not have the confidence to read these to her. Stella on her had various boyfriends as she pursues her goal of securing a recording contract. The film's story spans for four whole years of Fidel and Stella's college life and revolves around the question whether Fidel can muster enough.

  1. Movie Review: 100 Tula Para Kay Stella

I'll be honest, this film shows yet another romanticization of a boy, who I can say may only be in love with the idea of the girl. I guess that's why a lot of people say 100 Tula Para Kay Stella is a local ripoff of 500 Days of Summer. It's all a roller coaster ride that you can actually feel the plot twist being too much to handle.

  2. '100 Tula Para Kay Stella' Movie Review: A Nostalgic Ride Back To The

Coming from critically acclaimed director, Jason Paul Laxamana, "100 Tula Para Kay Stella" takes on the story of the relationship progression between rocker chick Stella (Bella Padilla) and smart but stutterer, Fidel in a span of a few years in college following a chance encounter in their Freshie year. Narratively-hinged on their friendship, the two's bond, however, gets tested by ...

    4. The soundtrack of 100 Tula Para Kay Stella features a couple of old-school Rivermaya songs like "Balisong" and "241.". 5. Try to make it to the movie theater a few minutes early so you don't miss a Sine Kabataan short film called Pahimakas (Farewell). Sine Kabataan is a short film competition which was opened to filmmakers 18 to 24 years old. The winners will be showcased along with their ...

  4. 100 Tula Para Kay Stella: Movie Review

100 Tula Para Kay Stella: Movie Review. "100 Tula Para Kay Stella" yearns and focuses on the carefree days of college life. It's a time embodied new beginnings, hope, love, and ultimately, naiveness. But don't let the hopeful spin of that era make you think that the film isn't dark, heavy, and dramatic. A poet by nature, Fidel Lansangan (JC ...

  5. Movie review: '100 Tula Para Kay Stella' resonates with millennials

100 Tula Para Kay Stella Trailer. ADVERTISEMENT. Those who were expecting a lighthearted funny romp will be up for a surprise. I found this film very heavy to watch. With the talent of lead stars JC Santos and Bela Padilla in portraying the lead pair of Fidel and Stella, the audience can definitely feel the frustration and hurt of both characters.

  6. MOVIE REVIEW: 100 Tula para kay Stella (2017) [1 of 2]

Jason Paul Laxamana's 100 Tula Para kay Stella offers a pragmatic approach to a tale of unrequited love in an ethereal synthesis of time, poetry and music whilst wrapped in the grounded, hard edges of life's reality. The film starts with the introduction of the typical nerdy, stuttering wallflower Fidel (JC Santos) and the typical ...

  9. Movie Review: 100 Tula Para Kay Stella

IMAGE Viva Films.

  10. Dreamy rockstars and heartsick poets: A review of 100 Tula Para Kay Stella

Immediately apparent to the audience is that 100 Tula Para Kay Stella is a hugot film. Between Stella and Fidel lies an abundance of miscommunication, heartsick glances, and devoted pining that builds for a climax that ultimately falters in its impact. Similarly, halfway through the two-hour film, one cannot help but yearn for a shift in ...
