gradrankings

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 Best Graduate School Rankings, 13 programs earned top 10 placements as Purdue continues to elevate its graduate education and research across the board.

“Purdue graduate students and faculty in master’s, doctoral and professional degree programs are among the best in the country,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “The latest graduate and research rankings reflect the success of our students and colleagues across multiple colleges as we continue to support scholarly excellence at scale.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Purdue recognized among world's best in latest QS rankings and rises to No. 8 among U.S. public universities
  • Purdue University Online continues to achieve high national rankings
  • Purdue University undergraduate national ranking jumps 8 spots, with 13 undergraduate programs in top 10 in the U.S .

Purdue’s heralded agricultural and biological engineering graduate program earned a No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive year. In the College of Engineering , 10 out of 12 departments ranked among the top 10 nationally, the best result in college history, with seven improving year over year:

  • Agricultural and biological engineering: No. 1
  • Aeronautics and astronautics: No. 2 (up four spots)
  • Civil engineering: 5 (up two spots)

Several areas related to the Purdue Computes initiative , including the Department of Computer Science — joint across the College of Science and College of Engineering — also saw gains year over year:

  • Computer systems: 13 (up one spot)
  • Computer science: 19 (up one spot)

The reimagined Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business continued its positive momentum, as the information systems and part-time MBA programs each appeared in the rankings for the first time. Also, these top 10 programs maintained or enhanced their ranking:

  • Production-operations: No. 3
  • Project management: No. 4 (up three spots)
  • Supply chain management: No. 7 (up two spots)

“Our graduate students are at the heart of our mission as a leading public land-grant research university, and we’ve consistently prioritized investments in their success,” said Patrick J. Wolfe, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity. “The hard work of Purdue faculty to elevate our graduate programs and their scholarly impact has driven this continued rise in national rankings, particularly in key strategic areas of enormous consequence to the university as a whole.”

In the School of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Sciences, the Doctor of Nursing Practice program jumped seven spots to No. 24, the biggest gain of any Purdue program in this ranking cycle. The overall master’s program also moved up three spots, to No. 22. Last August the Purdue University Board of Trustees approved plans to construct a transformative Nursing and Pharmacy Education Building , which will continue to accelerate the program’s significant growth.

The 2024-25 Best Graduate Schools rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students, and students’ postgraduate outcomes. Data for the rankings in business, education, engineering and nursing disciplines came from statistical surveys of 2,225 programs and from reputation surveys sent to approximately 5,766 academics and 10,941 professionals, conducted in fall 2023 and early 2024. To gather the peer assessment data, U.S. News asked deans, program directors and senior faculty to judge the academic quality of programs in their field on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding).

The visibility and stature of Purdue University continues to grow, as evidenced by these latest U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings and several other accolades recently accrued:

  • Earlier this month, Purdue was ranked as a top 8 public university in the U.S., in the top 25 overall domestically and in the top 90 globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings .
  • In February three Purdue online engineering master’s programs placed No. 1 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of best online programs . Several other online programs made significant leaps to underscore Purdue’s mission to deliver high-quality online programs at scale.
  • In the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings , Purdue surged seven spots domestically and over 40 spots globally, ranking No. 9 among U.S. public land-grant universities.
  • Purdue enjoyed its best-ever showing in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best College rankings of undergraduate programs , jumping to No. 17 among public universities on a list of 435 ranked national universities and earning a sixth consecutive top 10 Most Innovative (No. 7) ranking.

Top universities for promoting quality education in 2024

University impact rankings for un sdg 4: quality education.

Times Higher Education has rigorously evaluated 1,681 universities from 122 countries/regions to rank those making a significant contribution toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4: quality education. These top institutions are recognised for their commitment to advancing the right to education and ensuring access to education at all levels, from childhood development through secondary education and beyond. By focusing on sustainable education practices, they equip students with relevant skills and foster effective learning outcomes that are essential for the future workforce.

The top universities excel in offering equitable quality education, promoting vocational training and providing lifelong learning opportunities. Their innovative approaches ensure that education is not only accessible but adaptable to the evolving needs of society, thereby supporting sustainable development and reducing inequalities within and among countries.

Summary of findings

The ranking for SDG 4: quality education is led by Aalborg University in Denmark. The top 10 is largely dominated by Asia, with two institutions from Hong Kong, two from Turkey, two from Pakistan, one from India and one from Bahrain.

Pakistan has the highest number of universities in the table at 86.

Methodology

Our methodology for SDG 4: quality education incorporates a comprehensive set of indicators to assess universities' contributions to education and learning across multiple dimensions:

Research on early years and lifelong learning education (27%)

  • Number of studies on effective learning strategies and educational methodologies
  • Proportion of education-related papers that are viewed or downloaded
  • Proportion of education-related research in top journals

Proportion of graduates with a teaching qualification (15.4%)

  • Proportion of graduates qualified to teach, reflecting the university's commitment to producing capable educators

Lifelong learning measures (26.8%)

  • Provision of vocational training and career-oriented programmes
  • Facilities and programmes for adult education and lifelong learning opportunities

Proportion of first-generation students (30.8%)

  • Proportion of students who identify as being the first person in their immediate family to attend university, demonstrating the university’s commitment to education for disadvantaged groups and ensuring no group is left behind

The Impact Rankings are inherently dynamic: they are growing rapidly each year as many more universities seek to demonstrate their commitment to delivering the SDGs by joining our database; and they allow institutions to demonstrate rapid improvement year-on-year, by introducing clear new policies, for example, or by providing clearer and more open evidence of their progress. Therefore, we expect and welcome regular change in the ranked order of institutions (and we discourage year-on-year comparisons) as universities continue to drive this urgent agenda.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Multiple Ohio universities landed in the top 50 rankings for best graduate programs in engineering, according to the new 2023-2024 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Programs Rankings released Tuesday.

These include Ohio State University — ranked in the top 50 — as well as Case Western Reserve University, the University of Dayton, the University of Akron and the University of Cincinnati.

Ohio State has the highest scores in the state for peer and recruiter assessments, it grants the most doctoral degrees and has the highest percentage of tenure-track faculty who are elected members of the National Academy of Engineering (2.8%).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranks as the country’s best engineering school, followed by Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

U.S. News’ Best Engineering Schools rankings compare schools on their research activity, faculty resources, academic achievements of entering students and assessments by other engineering schools and employers. The methodology is distinct from the others U.S. News uses to assess undergraduate engineering programs and online master’s degrees in engineering, according to the ranking methodology.

Only two Ohio schools increased their rankings from the year before. CWRU moved up two spots while the University of Cincinnati moved up 8 spots. Ohio State stayed at the same rank as it did the year before. All other Ohio engineering schools dropped in rankings.

The University of Cincinnati had the highest percentage of publications cited in top 5% of journals by Elsevier’s CiteScore, at 24.7%.

The University of Dayton has the highest amount of externally funded engineering research expenditures, at $220.9 million.

NUS retains 8th spot in global university rankings, NTU rejoins top 20

research university ranking in world

SINGAPORE – The National University of Singapore (NUS) has retained its spot in the top 10 in a global ranking of institutions, while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has re-entered the top 20.

NUS remained eighth in the latest Britain-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2025 released on June 5, while NTU emerged 15th, up from its 2024 ranking of 26.

The ranking of institutions in this edition features 1,500 universities across 106 countries, with NUS as the highest-ranked Asian university and the first from Asia to be placed among the top 10 in the table.

The chart is dominated by universities from the United States and Britain, topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, similar to previous years, followed by Imperial College London in second, which climbed four places.

The University of Oxford is third, Harvard University fourth and the University of Cambridge is ranked fifth.

The QS rankings are based on nine indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and sustainability.

The three factors with the highest weightage are academic reputation, citations per faculty and employer reputation, carrying weightages of 30 per cent, 20 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.

Indicators like international research network, employment outcomes and sustainability – three new metrics introduced in 2024’s ranking – carry a weightage of 5 per cent each.

NTU and NUS did well in academic and employer reputation, as well as citations per faculty, which measures strong research output.

NUS came in sixth for employment outcomes and 15th for academic reputation. It ranks 26th globally for sustainability, which measures the commitment from institutions to environmentally and socially responsible practices and policies.

Professor Tan Eng Chye, president of NUS, said: “We are heartened that NUS has placed among the world’s top 10 and retained its lead in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2025 – a collective achievement by our outstanding faculty, staff, students and alumni.

“This year, most notably, NUS has made considerable progress in the sustainability indicator, a testament to our whole-of-university approach to shape a sustainable future through interdisciplinary solutions across education, research and campus operations.”

He added: “The NUS community remains resolute in our commitment to foster a vibrant and dynamic academic environment which inspires and drives positive impact for everyone.”

NTU’s climb of 11 places from 26th in the 2024 QS rankings was driven by improvements in employer reputation and sustainability.

NTU president Ho Teck Hua said: “To be ranked in the top 15 shows that despite being a young university, NTU is internationally competitive.”

He added that NTU’s improvement in the sustainability factor, among improvements in other factors, recognises the university’s efforts as a campus with eight zero-energy buildings and 100 per cent Green Mark Platinum certification for all eligible building projects.

“It also highlights the impact we have on global sustainability through education, research and partnerships,” he said.

Senior vice-president of QS Ben Sowter said: “These achievements underscore Singapore’s commitment to excellence in higher education, particularly in areas such as employability and sustainability, which are critical for the future of global education.”

Singapore Management University was in 585th position, while Singapore University of Technology and Design was in 440th place. Both universities dropped ranks, from 545th and 429th respectively, from 2024’s rankings.

Revealed: where every australian university sits in global rankings, by daniella white, save articles for later.

Sydney University has reached a new high in the latest global rankings as one of three Australian universities making it into the top 20, but experts warn the government’s international student crackdown will cause institutions to fall down league tables.

Melbourne University remains the top-ranked Australian institution, rising one place to 13th in the world in the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings.

Two NSW universities, the University of Sydney and UNSW, are in the top 20 in the QS rankings.

Sydney University rose one place to 18th – its highest-ever ranking – just pipping its rival University of NSW in 19th place.

University of Technology Sydney was the only other NSW university in the top 100, climbing two spots from 90 to 88. Macquarie University, University of Wollongong, and Western Sydney University all slipped in the rankings.

For the 13th consecutive year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US maintained its reign at the top of the rankings run by education analysts QS.

UK institutions Imperial College London and the University of Oxford were second and third. Harvard University and University of Cambridge rounded out the top five.

While two-thirds of US institutions declined in rank year-on-year, and only 22 per cent of British universities improved their rank, almost half of Australia’s entrants (47 per cent) improved in the 2025 edition.

“In the face of accelerating advancements from Asian institutions, Australian higher education has demonstrated remarkable resilience,” the report said.

But Angel Calderon, director of strategic insights at RMIT University and member of the QS Global Rankings Advisory Board, said the proposed international student cap would severely impact the viability of Australian universities and threaten the country’s standing as one of the “big four” study destinations along with the US, UK and Canada.

The proposed cap is central to the government’s plan to slash migration but has faced fierce opposition from the higher education sector which financially relies on international student fees.

“The cap on international students will hinder our place in the global rankings and therefore it will hinder our reputation and hinder the ability to attract international students,” Calderon said.

Australian universities ranked poorly in areas like employability and teaching, with no local institution in the global 300 for academic and student ratios.

More than 80 per cent of local universities also recorded lower year-on-year scores for employment outcomes and 76 per cent received lower scores from worldwide employers.

The rankings of 1500 universities are based on the analysis of more than 17.5 million academic papers and surveys from 175,798 academics and 105,476 employers.

Australian National University higher education expert Andrew Norton said rankings like QS’s fuelled perverse behaviour among universities.

“[Universities] ridiculously obsess over them and I think it distorts their decision-making. Including the recent merger of two institutions in South Australia,” he said.

“International students make decisions based on research rankings but they are not very indicative of the quality of their student experience.”

Norton said the proposed international student caps would lead to a fall in international rankings, which have a heavy weighting on research capacity.

“We have relied on profits from international students to increase our research output, and as their numbers fall that will start to reverse itself. It may take a couple of years to show because research is a lag indicator,” he said.

“[These rankings] are very important to the international student market, particularly for the Chinese market which is very prestige-focused, to the point where it’s probably the single biggest factor in choosing an institution.”

QS chief executive Jessica Turner said tighter regulations could prompt several thousands of prospective international students to look beyond Australia, threatening a $48 billion export sector that relied heavily on international student fees to fund research and maintain its cutting-edge status.

“It is important to balance regulatory measures with the need to support the international education sector and the opportunities it provides,” she said.

EDHEC Business School

Times Higher Education World University Rankings: EDHEC among the top 300 institutions worldwide for its "climate" actions

Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024 ranks EDHEC among the world's top 300 institutions for its "climate" actions and measures taken to reduce inequalities. EDHEC is also in the world's top 2% for its actions in favour of the development of decent work and economic growth. The British newspaper * has thus given EDHEC international recognition for its commitment to sustainable development (MDGs). The positive momentum generated by the Impact Future Generations plan will be accelerated by the GENERATIONS 2050 strategic plan, unveiled on 13 June.

research university ranking in world

International recognition

EDHEC has particularly distinguished itself in three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the ranking.

It ranks in the top 2% worldwide for its actions in favour of 'Decent Work and Economic Growth' (SDG 8). This criterion values the implementation of practices that promote the employability of its students and graduates and their transition to the job market (internships, career support, professional projects, partnerships with companies, etc.). It highlights the value of EDHEC's career support for students and alumni . This criterion also highlights the quality of the working conditions offered to employees (long-term contracts, EDHEC ethics charter, gender equality index, etc.). It highlights EDHEC's ability to create an environment conducive to economic growth and the personal development of its students and staff.

EDHEC is also one of the top 300 institutions for MDG 10 "Reduce inequality". THE highlights in particular the school's efforts to welcome students from developing countries, the consideration given to disability in accommodation, measures to combat discrimination and to promote diversity and equal opportunities. EDHEC has introduced a non-discrimination charter, grants scholarships for women to encourage their access to specific training, fights against sexist and sexual violence and sets up support programmes to promote diversity and inclusion.

EDHEC is one of the world's top 300 institutions for ODD 13 "Climate". THE recognises the quality of the research produced on climate finance by EDHEC professors and researchers, which contributes to understanding climate issues and the transition to a more sustainable economy. EDHEC devotes an annual budget of €20m to research into green finance, conducted by the EDHEC Climate Impact Institute. EDHEC is going to increase its efforts tenfold. As part of the GENERATIONS 2050 plan, EDHEC plans to allocate a budget of €41m to the development of climate finance projects. It has set up the Climate Finance School to put its research expertise in climate finance at the service of its degree courses, as well as the community of economic decision-makers, by supporting public and private players (institutions and financial departments).

Finally, THE underlines EDHEC's commitment to raising awareness and training students in the challenges of sustainable development through specialised courses and programmes (Sustainable Impact Projects, Msc in Global & Sustainable Business, MSc in Climate Change & Sustainable Finance, the courses 'Planetary Limits and Sustainable Economic Models', 'Science and Economics of Climate Change', 'Behavorial Finance for Sustainability', 'Socially Responsible Investing', etc.). These initiatives earned the school top marks (100 points) for its educational work on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. This criterion also recognises the school's commitment to actively reducing its carbon footprint. On its campuses, EDHEC favours the use of renewable energies and implements environmentally friendly practices. These commitments have earned EDHEC the DD&RS label. EDHEC is also a signatory of the Grenoble Accords.

This ranking, which measures the impact of universities on society beyond the traditional criteria of research and teaching, offers worldwide recognition of EDHEC's positive impact on the world. These commitments will continue to materialise through the GENERATIONS 2050 plan, a key date for achieving the sustainable development goals for humanity.

* Every year, the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking evaluates universities worldwide to measure their performance in three main areas: research, impact and teaching. The ranking uses 18 performance indicators covering aspects such as the learning environment, the research environment, research quality, knowledge transfer and international openness.

  • Petroleum Engineering – T-11 overall (last year’s ranking was T-12). Tied with the University of Wyoming.

The rankings were based on surveys by U.S. News with 219 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees. Statistical data was collected in fall 2023 and early 2024. Maintaining last year’s revamped focus, the ranking factor weights for this edition again featured an emphasis on research and a reduced emphasis on reputation, faculty resources, and selectivity. U.S. News took this approach based on the knowledge that research productivity is a core attribute of a department enrolling doctorate students. Also, there is increased confidence in research grants data that is validated against what schools reported to the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Criteria was as follows:

  • Research activity – 50%
  • Quality assessment – 25%
  • Faculty research – 20%
  • Student selectivity – 5%

UCR engineering grad school climbs in national rankings

Bourns College of Engineering moves up seven positions in U.S. News rankings

UCR’s Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering graduate school has climbed seven positions in the university rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

Christopher Lynch, dean of the Bourns College of Engineering

The school’s rank, released Tuesday, June 18, is 83rd in the nation; the graduate school was No. 76 this past year.

Three of the school’s programs also improved in the rankings: Chemical Engineering (53rd – up by two); Electrical Engineering (65th – up by one); and Environmental Engineering (57th – up by two).

Christopher S. Lynch , the school’s dean, attributed the rise to the school’s ability to meet societal and student needs.

“At the master’s level, we are preparing our students for both the engineering and computer science workforce and for beginning their doctoral studies,” Lynch said. “These new rankings affirm our continuing success in preparing our students to achieve their career goals.”

The rise in rankings reflects how BCOE has been continuously expanding its graduate offerings, Lynch added. This growth has been supported by the college expanding its faculty size and investing in support infrastructure and personnel.

Doctoral students receive full financial support, including tuition, fees, medical benefits, and salary through a combination of fellowships and research assistant and teaching assistant positions.

Bourns faculty produces research that offers solutions for climate change, environmental cleanup, advancing artificial intelligence, and computer hardware and software, among other areas of innovation.

The college expects 650 master’s students and 540 Ph.D. students in fall 2024.

Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland continues to climb in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR), achieving its highest result in more than a decade. The University has moved up to 65 in the world, an improvement on the 2024 ranking of 68. This reflects a consistent upward trajectory in academic and research excellence, despite the challenges of the past few years. By comparison, the University was ranked 85 in the world in 2019. More than 1,500 tertiary institutions around the world were evaluated in 106 locations, with eight from Aotearoa New Zealand. The University of Auckland was the only New Zealand university in the top 100 and it surpassed 95.7 percent of institutions worldwide in the evaluations. University of Auckland Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said the latest rankings are a proud achievement for all staff and students. “Behind the result is a lot of data that shows how the University is achieving its research goals. We are forming networks with other researchers around the world, the community, local iwi, industry, and government to seek research-driven solutions to society's challenges.”

As the University of Auckland looks to the future, we are focused on nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers

Professor Dawn Freshwater, Vice-Chancellor University of Auckland

Areas in which the University improved significantly, boosting the overall ranking, were sustainability, citations per faculty, employer reputation, and international research network (IRN). The University scored an outstanding 99.7 points for sustainability out of the 100 possible. Professor Frank Bloomfield, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, says being in the top 100 universities in the world is already a massive achievement, but moving closer to the top 50 is significant. “We are demonstrating excellence across multiple disciplines, and this outstanding result affirms our strategic direction and commitment to excellence in all areas.” The QS World University Rankings are highly regarded for their comprehensive and transparent methodology, which assesses universities through several performance lenses, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio and research impact. In the past two years, QS has introduced new metrics emphasising sustainability, employability, and global research engagement through the IRN, aligning closely with the evolving priorities of students and the broader educational landscape. The Vice-Chancellor added that the results amplify the ambitions set out in the University’s strategic plan Taumata Teitei. “As the University of Auckland looks to the future, we are focused on nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers. We want to ensure our graduates are equipped to make meaningful contributions to a rapidly changing society. “Connecting our researchers with industry and society is an important goal which can improve our graduates’ employment outcomes down the track.” Earlier in the year the University of Auckland also performed well in the QS Subject Rankings , with ten subjects appearing in the top 50 globally.

Education Rankings by Country 2024

There is a correlation between a country's educational system quality and its economic status, with developed nations offering higher quality education.

The U.S., despite ranking high in educational system surveys, falls behind in math and science scores compared to many other countries.

Educational system adequacy varies globally, with some countries struggling due to internal conflicts, economic challenges, or underfunded programs.

While education levels vary from country to country, there is a clear correlation between the quality of a country's educational system and its general economic status and overall well-being. In general, developing nations tend to offer their citizens a higher quality of education than the least developed nations do, and fully developed nations offer the best quality of education of all. Education is clearly a vital contributor to any country's overall health.

According to the Global Partnership for Education , education is considered to be a human right and plays a crucial role in human, social, and economic development . Education promotes gender equality, fosters peace, and increases a person's chances of having more and better life and career opportunities.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." — Nelson Mandela

The annual Best Countries Report , conducted by US News and World Report, BAV Group, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , reserves an entire section for education. The report surveys thousands of people across 78 countries, then ranks those countries based upon the survey's responses. The education portion of the survey compiles scores from three equally-weighted attributes: a well-developed public education system, would consider attending university there, and provides top-quality education. As of 2023, the top ten countries based on education rankings are:

Countries with the Best Educational Systems - 2021 Best Countries Report*

Ironically, despite the United States having the best-surveyed education system on the globe, U.S students consistently score lower in math and science than students from many other countries. According to a Business Insider report in 2018, the U.S. ranked 38th in math scores and 24th in science. Discussions about why the United States' education rankings have fallen by international standards over the past three decades frequently point out that government spending on education has failed to keep up with inflation.

It's also worthwhile to note that while the Best Countries study is certainly respectable, other studies use different methodologies or emphasize different criteria, which often leads to different results. For example, the Global Citizens for Human Rights' annual study measures ten levels of education from early childhood enrollment rates to adult literacy. Its final 2020 rankings look a bit different:

Education Rates of Children Around the World

Most findings and ranking regarding education worldwide involve adult literacy rates and levels of education completed. However, some studies look at current students and their abilities in different subjects.

One of the most-reviewed studies regarding education around the world involved 470,000 fifteen-year-old students. Each student was administered tests in math, science, and reading similar to the SAT or ACT exams (standardized tests used for college admissions in the U.S.) These exam scores were later compiled to determine each country's average score for each of the three subjects. Based on this study, China received the highest scores , followed by Korea, Finland , Hong Kong , Singapore , Canada , New Zealand , Japan , Australia and the Netherlands .

On the down side, there are many nations whose educational systems are considered inadequate. This could be due to internal conflict, economic problems, or underfunded programs. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's Education for All Global Monitoring Report ranks the following countries as having the world's worst educational systems:

Biden and Trump voters differ sharply over the state of women’s progress in the U.S., as well as over whether society should prioritize marriage and children.

Yet majorities of both candidates’ supporters say that the gains women have made in society have not come at the expense of men.

Nearly two years after the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision that guaranteed a right to abortion, the issue continues to divide the two coalitions: Biden supporters overwhelmingly say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while a narrower majority of Trump backers say it should not.

Chart shows How Biden and Trump voters view the state of women’s progress in the U.S.

But the two groups generally share the view that birth control and access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) should be widely available. Majorities of both Biden and Trump supporters view the broad availability of birth control as a good thing and say the same about access to IVF.

Supporters of Joe Biden and Donald Trump have mirror-image views on whether women face obstacles to getting ahead in society that men do not.

  • About three-quarters of Biden supporters (73%) say there are still significant obstacles making it harder for women than men to get ahead. About a quarter (26%) say these obstacles are now largely gone.
  • In contrast, seven-in-ten Trump supporters say the obstacles that once made it harder for women than men to get ahead are now largely gone. About three-in-ten (29%) say women still face significant obstacles.

There were also wide gaps in these opinions during the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns .

Chart shows Men who support Biden and Trump are more likely than women to say that obstacles standing in the way of women’s progress are now largely gone

Differences between Biden and Trump voters are much more modest when it comes to views of whether women’s gains have come at the expense of men. Sizable majorities of both Biden (90%) and Trump supporters (74%) reject this idea.

Among both Biden supporters and Trump supporters, men are more likely than women to say the obstacles that once made it harder for women than men to get ahead are now largely gone.

Among Trump supporters, 83% of men say this, compared with 55% of women.

Almost four-in-ten men who back Biden (37%) say women’s obstacles to progress are now largely gone. Just 16% of women who back Biden say the same.

While most voters across age groups and genders say that gains women have made have not come at the expense of men, a third of men who support Trump do think women’s gains have cost men. This share increases to 40% among men under age 50 who support Trump. About 20% of women or fewer – regardless of age or which candidate they support – say that women’s gains come at the expense of men.

Chart shows Trump supporters far more likely than Biden supporters to say society should prioritize marriage and having children

Roughly four-in-ten registered voters (39%) say society is better off if people make marriage and having children a priority, while a majority (59%) say society is just as well off if people have priorities other than family and children.

  • Trump supporters (59%) are much more likely than Biden supporters (19%) to say that it is better if people prioritize marriage and children.

There are modest differences between men and women in whether focusing on marriage and children makes society better.

  • About six-in-ten men who support Trump (63%) say this, compared with 54% of Trump-supporting women. There is a similar gender gap among Biden supporters (22% of men vs. 16% of women).

Black voters who support Biden (29%) are more likely than White (17%) and Hispanic (16%) Biden supporters to say an emphasis on marriage and family makes society better off. Two-in-ten Asian voters who back Biden say this.

Marriage and children

Chart shows Large gender gap among Trump supporters on comfort with women keeping their names after marriage

Three-quarters of registered voters say they are comfortable with women not taking their husbands’ last names when they get married. Just a quarter are uncomfortable with this.

However, Trump supporters (37%) are much more likely than Biden supporters (13%) to express discomfort with married women not taking their husbands’ last names.

And men who support Trump (44%) are more likely than women who support him (29%) to say they are uncomfortable with the practice of women not taking their husbands’ last names.

Related: About 8 in 10 women in opposite-sex marriages say they took their husband’s last name

The nation’s fertility rate, which has been declining for years, is now at its lowest point in more than a century, according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control. About four-in-ten voters (43%) say it is neither good nor bad for society that people are having fewer children; 35% view this trend negatively, while 22% say it is good for society.

Chart shows How voters see the declining birth rate

Biden supporters have mixed views of the fact that people are having fewer children. Half say this is neither good nor bad, 27% view this as good for society, and 23% say it is bad.

Trump supporters – especially men who back Trump – view this trend more negatively.

  • Nearly half of Trump supporters (47%), including a 56% majority of men who support Trump, say it is bad for society that people are having fewer children. Roughly four-in-ten women who support Trump (37%) see this trend as a bad thing.

Abortion deeply divides supporters of Biden and Trump. About nine-in-ten Biden supporters (88%) say abortion should be legal in most (46%) or all (42%) cases. Just 11% of Biden supporters say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.

Chart shows Deep divisions on abortion between Biden and Trump voters

Conversely, about six-in-ten Trump supporters (61%) say abortion should be illegal in all (11%) or most (50%) cases. A significant minority of Trump supporters say abortion should be legal in most or all cases (38%).

Related: Broad Public Support for Legal Abortion Persists 2 Years After Dobbs

Age, gender differences among Trump supporters – but not Biden supporters – on abortion

Chart shows About half of Trump supporters under 35 say abortion should be legal in all or most cases

About half of Trump supporters ages 18 to 34 (51%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, a substantially higher share than among older Trump supporters (35% of those 35 and older).

Among Biden supporters, nearly nine-in-ten across all age groups say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

Both women and men who back Trump are more likely to say abortion should be illegal than to say it should be legal. However, more women who support Trump (41%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with 34% of men who support Trump.

There is no difference in these views between women and men who support Biden.

By contrast, 73% of all voters – including majorities of Biden (83%) and Trump supporters (64%) – say access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) is a good thing.

Related: Americans overwhelmingly say access to IVF is a good thing

Chart shows Most voters say widespread access to birth control is good for society

Voters overwhelmingly express positive views of birth control, condoms and other forms of contraception being widely available in the United States. Nearly eight-in-ten (79%) say this is very or somewhat good for society, 13% view it as neither good nor bad, and 7% say it is bad.

  • 93% of Biden supporters and 66% of Trump supporters say it’s good for society that birth control is widely available.
  • Men who support Trump (61%) are less likely than women who back the former president (73%) to say that birth control being widely available is good for society. There is no meaningful gender gap on this question among Biden supporters.
