The Philadelphia Experiment

A secret government research project tries reviving the World War II "Philadelphia Experiment," which was an attempt to create a cloaking device to render warships invisible. When the experiment succeeds, it brings back the original ship (the Eldridge) that disappeared during the first test in 1943 - which brings death and destruction to the 21st century. It's up to the sole survivor of the first experiment and his granddaughter to stop it.

Honestly, I never thought the 1984 original was anything too special. Having said that, this 2012 reboot (which is what I'd have to call it since Michael Paré appears in this new version however as a different character) might be slightly better if only by degrees. The destroyer lost in the WWII cloaking-experiment returns when the same science gets a new lease by the US government - and one of the crewmen is still alive. The ship starts popping in and out of existence all over the planet, and it's a race to catch up with it in order to prevent an extra-dimensional catastrophe. Anyhow, it's pretty straightforward stuff, but the characters are likable enough. If it shows up on cable somewhere, and it doubtlessly will, it's good enough to leave on in the background while you do the dishes.

I have seen shockers in my life but this takes all of the biscuits.

Based loosely on the first one but this time the ship disappears in 1943 and reappears in modern day.......well everywhere. It is a right indecisive little bugger and doesn't like staying in one place for too long. As such, it buggers up a tiny little air field, an office block in Chicago, the desert, a research lab and for good measure a nuclear power plant on the west coast of England. Id hardly class Bristol as the West Coast. Strange considering its a ship it went nowhere the bloody sea.

Anyway, the only people who can help are the scientists who brought it back in the first place and the only survivor on the ship.

Not good in anyway.

They were fused to the ship!

Why is this movie so much fucking fun to me? I have no need to question it, I always enjoy this one (meaning yes I this is a rewatch and I’ll likely do it again bap bap). Anyway, bad CGI does not phase me when I’m watching a SYFY movie. It is what it is!

The pacing pushes the ridiculous storyline on fast. The acting is better than you’d expect. I think it wraps up full circle pretty well for a time travel movie. It’s a fun B-movie and brings me comfort during these trying times.

Nicht so kacke wie alle sagen.

Schaut sich als Neu Interpretation des Originals im TV-Filmchen Format verpackt.

Zwar fehlt das Budget an allen Ecken und kannten aber sieht sich relativ zügig und langweilig wird es auch nicht.

Die Zeitreisestory wird dabei in die jetzige Zeit verlegt. Das ein oder andere bekannte Gesicht ist auch im Cast.

Paré spielt auch wieder mit allerdings einen anderen Charakter. Nur scheint er wenig Bock zu haben einen seiner besten Filme jetzt noch mal zu verwursten.

Effekte sind sehr schwankend meistens aber auf damaligen SC-FI Channel Niveau.

Kann man nebenbei oder als Fan des Originals mal laufen lassen.

Why I watched this one? I thought I was going to be re-watching The Philadelphia Experiment from the the 1980s....instead this turned out to be a cheap television movie.

What is this one about? A navy ship that disappeared in 1943.....starts popping up in modern day in very unique places.

My thoughts on this one? Pretty weak. Michael Pare returns in his role that was the hero in the movie in the 1980s....but this time around he is a evil henchman for the main villain of the movie. Why? I have no idea...and the movie does not bother to explain it either. The rest of the movie does not make much sense either.....but hey...you can't have everything in a movie. Final thought: This is a waste of time!

Well, it's been 28 years since the original, and Michael Paré still can't act...

This unnecessary remake starring several SyFy-Channel alumni (Ryan Robbins, Nicholas Lea,...) tries his best, but with a limited budget and a poor script it never really becomes interesting. Throw in some pretty dumb and unlogical bad guys and crappy CGI (even the fires look fake) and you have a very average B-movie...

The original Philadelphia Experiment was purportedly an experiment conducted in 1943 in an attempt to make the US Navy destroyer Eldridge invisible to radar. The story of what supposedly happened was published as the book The Philadelphia Experiment (1979) by Charles Berlitz and William L. Moore. The claim made by the book, denied by the US Navy and disproven by ship’s records, was that the experiment caused the ship to dematerialise from the harbour in Philadelphia and reappear in Norfolk, Virginia. A great deal of fringe science lunacy has grown up around what happened, involving time travel, aliens, UFOs and government cover-ups, even dubious eyewitness accounts. The book was optioned by John Carpenter who eventually passed on directing the film…

I want to give props to Nicholas Lea, the man can act, and he can really sell the role he's playing...even if he is in an absolutely horrible movie. So, big hats off to him for bringing his A-Game to this. He made the movie tolerable and I was actually able to finish it because of him.

However, well, the special effects showed too much. Had they hid it in the darkness more they could have saved money, made it look better, and it wouldn't have come across so much like a early 90s made for TV flick.

And it felt that good chunks of the script were written around the special effects and...tha... read the rest.
