  • art, design and architecture, including landscape architecture;
  • critical and historical studies;
  • creative writing;
  • curating contemporary art and design;
  • design for health and sustainability;
  • film and photography;
  • illustration practice;
  • museum and galleries studies archives;
  • dance, drama and music;
  • English literature and language;
  • journalism, media and communications; and
  • philosophy.

As a research student at Kingston University you will become part of a strong and ambitious postgraduate community. You will be fully supported by a rich programme of research training, including research workshops, seminars, guest lectures, symposia, and related activities organised through the research centres.

Currently we have over 250 postgraduate researchers across the Faculty. Several have successfully secured prestigious AHRC postgraduate studentships through TECHNE or LDoc, overseas government studentships, industry or employer sponsorship, or University or Kingston School of Art scholarships.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A PhD usually takes three to four years of full-time study or four to six years part time. You will normally be expected to have a masters degree or a good honours degree or equivalent in a subject relevant to your proposed research programme.

The PhD thesis is typically about 40–80,000 words long or its equivalent for studio-based research. On completion it will be the subject of an oral examination in which you will show both how you have critically investigated your area of research and made an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Typically an MPhil takes about two years full time or three/four years part time. An MPhil thesis is 20–40,000 words long or its equivalent for studio-based research and is the subject of an oral examination in which you will show how you have critically managed and investigated your area of research.

MA/MSc by Research

This flexible learning programme allows students to pursue an individual programme of research in any field, supported by research methods training, and taught modules as appropriate. The degree involves investigation and evaluation of an approved research project and the presentation of a dissertation of between 10,000 and 20,000 words or equivalent for studio based subjects. The award of MA or MSc by Research is at the same level as the MPhil, but carries half the credits (180).

The programme lasts one year full time or two years part time. To be eligible you will need a good honours degree in a related discipline. Applications will also be considered if you have no formal qualifications but can satisfy the admissions tutor of your motivation and ability to work at masters level.

How to apply

Kingston School of Art research degrees begin in either October or March. Application guidance documents are available for each subject:

Profile Photo

A theses or dissertation is an extended body of research produced by students for a higher degree such as a Masters or PhD, or an extended essay undertaken as part of an undergraduate program of study. This guide includes information about how to locate print and electronic theses or dissertations produced by students at Queen’s as well as those produced by students at other institutions, both in Canada and overseas.

Useful websites to locate graduate theses

Many universities now make graduate theses available to the world via search engines like Google.   This page provides a list of online repositories and search tools to locate theses, both completed and in-progress.

Also see the links on the top left for additional resources to locate Queen's theses as well as those produced at other Canadian and International Institutions.

OpenDOAR - Directory of Open Access Repositories : OpenDOAR is a global directory of University repositories including theses, research articles and other open access research.

PQDT Open : PQDT Open provides the full text of open access dissertations and theses.   Locate dissertations and theses relevant to your discipline, and view the complete text in PDF format.

PhdData.org: maintained by a small community of graduate students, PhdData.org is a free index of doctoral dissertations in-progress.  Indexing of theses in this index is entirely voluntary and therefore coverage is patchy.

Thesis Commons : a new, cloud-based, open-source platform for the submission, dissemination, and discovery of graduate and undergraduate theses and dissertations from any discipline.  Launched in August 2017 by The  Center for Open Science  (COS), it is currently a small collection.

TIP: In instances where an individual student or faculty member has requested access to a copy of a thesis or dissertation from another university, either purchased by the Library, or purchased by an individual student or faculty member and later donated to the library collection, the item may be available in  OMNI  the Library Catalogue.

What is a Dissertation

A dissertation is a large project that takes place towards the end of most university courses. It is usually research based however you may be asked to complete a project which is more common in your industry, for example a business plan.

For this guide we will be referring to a dissertation primarily as a research project however most of the advice and information will be relevant to all projects.

The guide will be be separated into two sections: the first will look at the process of completing a dissertation, while the second will look at the end product .

Why Complete a Dissertation?

Your dissertation is designed to allow you to demonstrate the knowledge of your subject that you have gained throughout your course as well as that you can apply sector/subject specific conventions to your own work. In undertaking a dissertation you are also demonstrating key employability skills such as the ability to work independently, develop a working relationship with your supervisor, as well as make practical decisions and set your own deadlines (Williams, 2018).

The table below shows the abilities you will be able to demonstrate when completing a dissertation (Greetham, 2019, p.7).

Understanding Shows a clear grasp of the issues involved.
Analysis Understand and use concepts appropriately to define a specific problem and potential explanations.
Creative abilities Devise questions/hypothesis and then means of answering/testing them.
Problem solving Identify problems and their solutions.
Comparison Identify differences and similarities.
Criticism Critically assess evidence and arguments.
Inductive and deductive reasoning Come to conclusions based on relevant, consistent argument and reliable evidence.
Self-organisation, self-motivation Manage and sustain a large research project.
Writing Skills Present findings in clear, well-planned written work.

Dr. Dawn Leach, PhD, Psychology, Kingston University Director of Operations

Meet Our Team

We are pleased and incredibly proud to announce the publication of Dissertation Editor’s new book,  PhDone: A Professional Dissertation Editor’s Guide to Writing Your Doctoral Thesis and Earning Your PhD.

Services tailored to you.

Work with our professional PhD-editors to improve your writing, the strength of your argument, and structure of your paper to ensure it adheres to doctoral-level standards.

Our professional statisticians will advise you on your methodology, ensure you have chosen the most appropriate statistical tests, and conduct your analyses for you to make sure academic work meets the standards required for a PhD and to one day get published.

Writing a literature review can be overwhelming. Let our PhD-editors find the most relevant and up-to-date research in your field and create an annotated bibliography for you pointing out gaps in the literature and discussing how each study relates to your topic.

Formatting can be very time-consuming. Let our professional editors format your document and ensure your project adheres to your university or academic style guidelines, eg.,  APA ,  Chicago/Turabian ,  Harvard  etc.

Our PhD-educated editors and statisticians offer one-to-one support to develop your project and help keep you on track

Get your work published. Our professional editors offer a variety of service to help you share your work with a wider audience

Why Choose Thesis Editor?

We take a personalised approach to all of our services, discussing them with our clients and tailoring them to meet the specific needs of postgraduate students, academics, and professionals from a variety of backgrounds. All members of our team, from the person who will answer your phone call or email to the editor or statistician working on your project have PhDs and being published authors, researchers, and academics, we have been through the process before and are uniquely qualified to help you meet your goals.

How We Work

Our process is designed in accordance with the nuanced and complex nature of academic projects. Contrary to many online editing and consultation services, we do not offer one standardised approach to pricing. Rather, for every order, we carefully assess your document and provide a quote that directly correlates with the work your document requires and the services you have requested.

To receive a free assessment and quote, please send us the most up-to-date version of the document for which you are seeking assistance. Please also send any feedback from your supervisors, your University’s style guide, and any other supporting material you may have. Once we have your materials, we will review and assess them, and will follow up with a detailed offer of services, as well as a quote and turnaround time.

Data Analysis

To receive a free assessment and quote, please send us your most up-to-date draft of your paper along with your data (either qualitative or quantitative) and copies of any questionnaires you have used. Once we have all your materials, we will review them and follow up with a detailed offer of services, including a quote and information on the turnaround time for your project.

Initially I had trouble writing my Project scope for my DBA  as I have an undergraduate in English and an MBA which meant I could write essays at a business report level but not a doctorate level. I reached out to Dr Leach at a Thesis Editor and she spoke with me over the phone several times trying to understand what I needed. She also put together a quick turnaround package as my deadline was very close by. Ultimately, she scheduled an appointment with an editor with many years of experience who guided me back onto the right path. My supervisors at university had only helped me a little but the Thesis Editor team have supported me entirely. I am not only grateful but will be working with Thesis Editor for the entirety of my DBA - the next 4 years. Thank you Dr Leach and thank you to the Thesis Editor team for a wonderful experience.
