Clip Description

Many shops and supermarkets sell tinned sardines. These oily fish (of which there are 18 different species) are named after the island of Sardinia, where they were once abundant. Small, silvery and elongated, sardines congregate in vast schools, feeding on plankton as they travel along the coastlines of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

A fishy feast – sounds delicious? Not if you are a fish! Imagine being invited to dinner because you ARE the dinner! In this fascinating clip, a school of sardines are under attack from a range of predators. Seals and shearwaters (deep diving birds) are picking off sardines as they dart about, twisting into tighter and tighter shoals. What do you think will happen when a copper shark appears on the scene? Watch the clip to find out.

Word Challenge

The movement of the fleeing sardines is so incredible – almost hypnotic! There are lots of interesting ways you could describe this. What interesting adjectives, verbs, adverbs, similes or metaphors can you come up with?

e.g. a shimmering mass, a silver bait ball, a frenzy of escapees, …

Parenthesis: brackets, dashes and commas

I can choose when to use brackets, dashes or commas for most effective parenthesis.

Lesson details

Key learning points.

  • Parenthesis can be achieved with a range of punctuation: brackets, dashes and commas.
  • Any type of parenthesis is additional information that can be removed without compromising grammatical accuracy.
  • Brackets are useful in non-fiction writing to add extra, factual information.
  • Dashes are useful in fiction writing for dramatic effect.
  • Commas are useful to drop information in to a clause.

Common misconception

Pupils may believe dashes and commas are used interchangeably in fiction writing.

We favour using dashes when we are showing a dramatic effect and commas when simply adding detail.

Parenthesis - additional information that is added to a sentence; if it is removed, the sentence still makes sense

Brackets - a punctuation mark used to add extra, factual information in a clause

Dashes - a punctuation mark to add extra information in a clause often for dramatic effect

Clause - a group of words that contains a verb

Phrase - a group of words with no verb

Children would act as detectives to find and highlight the examples of parenthesis in the short story. I typically used this with Year 5, but could also be used within Year 6 as a SATs revision activity.

I use this as part of a spag lesson. Children would act as detectives to find and highlight the examples of parenthesis at the start of the lesson. Then I would explain what parenthesis is and ask for examples from the story. The children would then have another look and highlight any new examples in a different colour. The text could also be used as a morning task, starter or revision activity. I also use BBC Supermovers in conjunction with this activity.

I have uploaded a word document and pdf so you can easily edit and adapt if the text if you wish to. Powerpoint also included.
