Experimental Cocktail Club
Experimental cocktail club (gerrard street) | cocktail bar.
Perched above the heaving streets of Chinatown, where red paper lanterns quietly dance to the rhythm of the evening breeze, behind the throngs of people leaving work or popping into restaurants, lives Experimental Cocktail Club (ECC). An unassuming door, worn with the passing of time, inconspicuously wedged between two Chinese restaurants. Behind the black door, up a set of stairs lit with glowing lights reminiscent New York speakeasies, music wafts through the air and the sound of ice echoes against a cocktail shaker.
Once inside, the chaotic streets outside are soon forgotten. ECC is a hidden gem bathed in exposed brick and mirrored ceilings. Low sofas surround marble and mirror-topped tables. A leather topped bar, and behind, bartenders welcome everyone with a smile. Upstairs once more, a marble topped bar built into an antique piano is the centrepiece and low-slung seating awaits.
ECC first opened its doors on a winter’s night in 2010. It’s the first cocktail bar to open outside of Paris for Experimental Group, a hospitality collective co-founded by Romée de Goriainoff, Pierre-Charles Cros and Olivier Bon. Upon arrival in London, Les Trois Garçons asked Xavier Padovani to join their crew. Today, though cocktail bars are their core, Experimental Group has hotels, bars and restaurants across London, Paris, New York, Ibiza, Menorca, Venice, Verbier and the Cotswolds. It was here on Gerrard Street however where they started their international adventures, and ECC holds a special place at the heart of the group.
The menu is an alchemic adventure, on a journey from classics to originals. An Old Cuban is a nod to New York’s inimitable Audrey Saunders and the St Germain des Pres is so good, it’s never left the menu. A fine balance of soft and spicy, where gin and cucumber dances with spiced tincture, shaken with egg white. A Kota Ternate takes clarified milk, rum and pineapple to deliver a cocktail that feels like a sophisticates pina colada, if one did ever exist.
Take a journey back in time and order a Vintage Negroni, comprised of 1950’s Gordon’s Gin and 1970’s Campari. Or settle in for a glass of champagne alongside cheese & charcuterie. The perfect place to start the evening, or party well into the night.
Reserve your table beforehand to guarantee a spot, though ECC do accommodate walk-ins. All you need to do is find that elusive black door…

Experimental Cocktail Club Review: Drinking Behind Closed Doors in Chinatown
Love This? Save and Share!
The Experimental Cocktail Club London (ECC for those in the know) is a friendly speakeasy hidden away in Chinatown . Add it to your little black book of cocktail bars in the heart of the West End.
The West End is the Russian roulette of drinking wheels – tacky bars with no redeeming qualities, marred by the slight sheen of seediness and overpriced drinks at one end of the spectrum…and places like the Experimental Cocktail Club at the other. Polar opposites in everything but a shared postcode.
Pick your way through the neon lights and lanterns of Chinatown, your eyes searching for an unmarked door – this door is the key to your evening – the multi-storied Experimental Cocktail Club to be more precise.
Inside Experimental Cocktail Club
It can be tough to find – you’ll know that you’ve found the right door when you can peek what looks very much like a bar upstairs (just call us #sleuthymcsleuthy – hunting out speakeasies is something we’ve become rather adept at).
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chinatown London (@chinatownlondon)
Inside, the doormen will let you know if there’s space (not always a given as it does get busy) and usher you to your spot if there is. This is where all the fun begins.
The decor is rather sexy, in a shabby, faded beauty kind of way. No surprise that this is one of London’s classic date night bars – a truth evidenced by the number of couples making eyes at each other over their drinks.

The Cocktails
Peruse the cocktail menu – full of quirky libations and ECC Chinatown’s takes on old classics or just tell one of the knowledgeable and incredibly helpful members of staff what you’re after and they’ll endeavour to do their best.
It changes all the time, but they’re all the product of a mixology team who clearly know their stuff. However you get there, you will end up with a jolly good cocktail in hand.
Seating is tight, so if it’s busy, expect to snuggle up a little too close for comfort with a stranger or two.
It’s not our favourite way to spend the evening (space is a luxury that is handed out in dribs and drabs in this city) but then again, we are a little bit crabby about these things.
Either way, Experimental Cocktail Club Chinatown does have a pleasant buzz and the cocktails are worth sacrificing a smidgen of personal space for.

The Experimental Cocktail Club’s reservations system is simple. They do take them and you need to email them to make one. Easy right? Just drop them an email at [email protected] with the booking request. Tables fill fast on the weekends, so get in there quick if you want to nab one.
Not officially, though for any of London’s fancy bars you’re expected to wear smart casual. Pass on the sportswear and you’ll be fine.

Experimental Cocktail Club
Time out says.
Experimental Cocktail Club isn’t the kind of place you’d expect to find in Chinatown. In fact, it’s not the kind of place you can expect to find very easily at all: don’t be surprised if you walk past the bar’s unassuming battered door several times before realising it leads to this buzzing three-floor joint filled with trendy groups and dating couples absorbed in lively chatter. Many of them will have reserved – it's a good idea if you don't want to be left disappointed and standing on Gerrard Street.
The drinks aren’t so experimental that they come in test tubes, but they’re consistently outstanding, making choosing what to order an almost impossible task. Throw in a gently lit backdrop of minimalist brick walls, mirrored walls and cut-glass tumblers and you're left with an opulent and cosy bar which, once found, you won't want to leave.
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Experimental Cocktail Club
June 15, 2017
ECC was the trendiest bar in town years ago, and it’s still a pretty damn good place to get a drink in Soho. All of the hallmarks of a cool bar are there - bloke with a clipboard standing outside a random door in Chinatown, ‘secret’ stairs and a guy with an afro on the decks, and lots of people who look both richer and cooler than you inside. The drinks are great (expensive, but worth it), and the vibe makes it a banging place to spend a couple of hours getting horribly sloshed. It’s almost always packed, but you can usually slide in without a booking earlier in the week.

SquareMeal Review of Experimental Cocktail Club
Silver Award
Like its Shoreditch sibling, Joyeux Bordel, ECC is from the same stable as à la mode Parisian thoroughbreds such as Prescription in St. Germain-des-Prés. Beyond the scruffy door, guarded by a friendly (or otherwise) greeter, you’ll discover a moody boho pile packed with Pinteresting people and arranged over the upper floors of a Chinatown dwelling: opinions of the full EEC experience are invariably divided, although few would dispute that it delivers consistently good drinks knocked out by keen-to-please/snottily superior staff (make up your own mind). Expect to shell out at least £70 for a quartet of contemporary spins on classic recipes: the line-up varies, but those we have loved include the Martini Suissesse (a blend of absinthe, vermouth, mint and orgéat that tastes like pimped-up Pernod) and Old Cuban (a rum, ginger and shampoo coupe). Steer clear of cocktails made with vintage spirits – unless you're feeling really flush and really flash.

What our visitors say
Incredible class! Not only did I learn SO much but I left with a completely bespoke scent that I created. I would highly recommend!
Emmanuelle has a true talent. It was a joy to work with her on developing a scent that I absolutely love. The one-on-one aspect was perfect for learning and asking questions. An unforgettable experience.
A real treat of a day with a master of her trade. Em has an incredible depth of knowledge and was delighted to share it. She was extremely patient whilst we created our blends, and helped ensure we all designed a scent that fitted our brief and smelt divine. An excellent gift, and I will be returning to one of the Open Labs soon. Thank you.
A wonderful, hands-on introduction to scents and scent-making, with clear, friendly and supportive instruction. Plus a beautiful and unique fragrance to take away! Thanks so much Emmanuelle!
Amazing experience I would absolutely recommend if you are on this page looking to come. Led by the extremely knowledgeable Emmanuelle, who makes the workshop both extremely personable and informative. The attention to detail from the booklet, to the perfume spray and holder you take home, make the whole experience one you will never forget.
What to expect
1. led by a trained perfumer.
All our perfume workshops are hosted by founder and professionally trained perfumer, Emmanuelle Moeglin. With expert guidance along the way, you will learn to open your nose before creating, naming and making your own signature scent.
While the workshops are informal and fun, we are very serious about perfumery. Each workshop is a masterclass in understanding how to “speak” fragrance, providing you with a foundation in perfume creation.
Leave with an enriched fragrant vocabulary, an understanding of how scents work together, and a better vision of your personal scent profile.
2. Experience a Perfume Lab
Our perfumery workshops are held at the EPC Lab in London. In a relaxed and intimate environment, you’ll be surrounded by all sorts of wonderful smells.
We limit the number of participants, ensuring everyone receives the attention they deserve and one-to-one time with our perfumer. Our aim is to provide the perfect environment for our visitors to experience fragrance and indulge their love of scents.
3. Industry Techniques & Ingredients
We use a selection of individual perfumery ingredients, both natural and synthetic, sourced from leading and reputable perfume ingredients manufacturers.
We also provide accurate measuring materials and scales, and easy-to-understand formulation techniques.

Hidden Treasures at The Experimental Cocktail Club
Gerrard Street is filled with the Friday night throng. Lights shimmer and glint and delicious smells swell up from busy basement kitchens. The rain pours down in heavy torrents, the streets look like a scene from Blade Runner, steam and smoke rising from the drains.
The heavy, graffiti’d metal door is unmarked and seems incongruous with the bright markings of a thousand dim sum restaurants. Once past the beautiful, steely hostess on the door, you are warmly welcomed into the opulence that is the Experimental Cocktail Club (ECC). Candlelit steps lead up into a small, dark room which centres around an extremely well-stocked cocktail bar. It feels delicious to be hidden away up here, a few feet above the busy Friday night bustle of Chinatown, but locked away in a world of glamour which harks back to a distinctly bygone age. Jazz plays gently as the evening starts to come alive.
ECC was opened in London by a group of young Frenchman, who already had a well-established ECC in Paris. The chaps realised that there was a gap in the market for a sleek late night, non-members establishment in this part of town and made the appropriate arrangements – ECC is now known to be one of London’s finest late night establishments.
Later, the jazz starts to morph into something deeper, with extra bass. ECC opens late and serves the best cocktails in the vicinity, so as you might imagine, people come early and stay for the duration. I suggest bagging an early table and settling in; down below on Gerrard Street everything crackles and spits with the frenetic activity of the Soho night, but up here you’re in your cocoon and that’s all that matters.

Experimental Perfume Club
Perfumer Emmanuelle Moeglin put a strikingly different – and fully blendable – perfumed pin in the map of London, creating a ‘rising star’ fragrance house that encourages exploration…
In 2016, with a desire to demystify the often confusing (and still quite closed) world of perfumery, she started the Experimental Perfume Club – a small but airy studio in London Fields, where she first developed workshops to help people understand scent better. We well remember being invited to join once such group at the press opening, and with her clear, helpful yet expert instruction, it was clear from the get-go that EPC were on the same page as The Perfume Society – wanting to fling open the doors and tell as many people as possible just how fascinating (and accessible) the world of fragrance can (and should!) be. Now, with a stunning new central location in Covent Garden, the workshops continue and their world is even more fragrant…
And now that world has been made even more accessible – in your own home in fact – with their of a collection of unique fragrances: to enjoy and explore alone or to been together at home. Because not everyone can get to London… So Experimental Perfume Club has followed up with a range of wonderful perfumes that can be worn alone or excitingly blended to create new unique fragrances, named by the brand – the ‘Blends’. Exploring the smells of harmonious combinations, understanding both the magic and the science of fusing scents, they invite you to be beguiled and ‘find the fragrance that tells your story…’
The blending combinations are almost endless, but cards within each box provide an ample start to your scent experiments. So how will you choose to play? Within collections, you can find Top Bergamot / Incense – rich, resinous oilbanum juxtaposed with soothing tea notes, with aromatic juniper berry brightening the robust bergamot still further. Alternatively, enjoy the lush herbs, green grassiness and milky swirled, ripe rosy flesh in Fig / Neroli .
In the Mid , choose from Jasmine / Osmanthus – an ode to white flowers and balmy evenings: think peachy, apricot facets of osmanthus, sunlit jasmine and frangipani flowers giving that beachy summer skin effect. And if you’re not a white floral person? Try fruity rose entwined with sharp blackcurrant, dewy peonies and a sense of stalks, petals and stems in Rose / Rhubarb .
For the Base , meanwhile, allow Sandalwood / Musk to entice with rich Indian sandalwood – less creamy, more mineral – enveloped by, soft musks, supple, downy suede with hints of cool, earthy vetiver and mellow Ambroxan. Or perhaps you’ll plump for the smoky, smooth incense hushed by powdery orris and warmed by chocolate-like patchouli in Amber / Iris …? (Adding further to the fragrant fun, look out for occasional Limited Editions – even more intense and complex nuanced notes to add to your mix.)
Emmanuelle designed the collection so that any combination so that any number of combinations will work well together: a harmony of accords that are truly lovely experienced alone, or combined together can become a scented song of your own. It isn’t the same as training to be a perfumer – but with Experimental Perfume Club , all the hard work has been done for you.
So dive into the fun of finding your own favourite combination – creating a unique fragrant blend that’s as close to bespoke as you can get…

Things To Do

The Experimental Perfume Club
Experimental perfumes.
They’re proof that not everyone needs common scents.
And Experimental Perfume Club founder Emmanuelle Moeglin (“a classically trained nose”) and her team certainly don’t either. You see, she set the place up to help people design their very own completely bespoke fragrances, through a series of workshops held in a bright, airy space up the road from Seven Dials Market .
HOW IT WORKS
There are three different types of workshop at the Experimental Perfume Club: Apprentice, Expert and 1-2-1 Sessions. For beginners, the best option is Apprentice, a thorough introduction that takes place over the course of half a day ( 3.5hrs, to be exact. There are biscuits, fear not ). That’s just how long it takes to get the basics of professional fragrance blending. You’ll be placed in an intimate group of just a dozen or so people, all gathered around a workbench, where you’ll then get an expert-led masterclass in olfactory exploration by an experienced perfumer, using industry-based techniques to show you how to blend up to 20 base scents into your own personal fragrance.
Once you’ve got it nailed, you’ll then blend it into your own personal 15ml perfume bottle, which you’ll get to take home at the end of the day. You’ll also get to take home your workbook filled with information learnt during the class, and your fragrance formula – so you can swing by and remake the stuff whenever you want.
The Expert workshops, meanwhile, allow you to level up. These take place over the whole day, but if you’ve already done the Apprentice course then you’ll want to opt for ‘afternoon only’. Here, you’ll be taught more advanced perfumer techniques, leaving with two 15 ml perfumes, and (thanks to your more finely honed nose) will gain access to a wider variety of more complex fragrances.
Finally, there are 1-2-1 Sessions for anyone wanting something even more bespoke. In your session, you’ll be guided in unlocking your scent profile by Experimental Perfume Club founder, Emmanuelle Moeglin. Together, you’ll work to create your own unique scent. By the end, you’ll float away with a 15ml perfume bottle, a refillable travel spray, AND a 50ml eau de parfum bottle with your very own formula.
Now that makes scents.
NOTE: W orkshops at the Experimental Perfume Club start at £175 for a half day. You can find out more, and make a booking right HERE .

Join author Beth McColl next month as she leads the first Rooftop Book Club at – you guessed it – Rooftop Film Club.
Rooftop Book Club. It’s like Rooftop Film Club , but with books . And they’re launching their first chat about the written word up in the clouds at Bussey Building in Peckham next month.
If you’re on the lookout for a natter about books, then you can join author and podcaster Beth McColl – who published How To Romanticise Your Life this year, her follow-up book to 2019’s How To Come Alive Again – to discuss Gillian Flynn’s iconic crime fiction novel, Gone Girl .
It’s the perfect way to relax on a late summer’s evening – pick up a glass of wine or a cold beer and meet like-minded people who love books as much as you do, and delve into the work of one of the most interesting modern crime writers around.
Of course, since this is Rooftop Film Club we’re talking about, the hour-long discussion of Gone Girl will then be followed up by a screening of the David Fincher film adaptation, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
On top of her published work across multiple formats and sites, Beth McColl is also one of three co-hosts on the weekly culture podcast that is Everything Is Content , alongside Oenone Forbat and Ruchira Sharma. McColl will be leading the discussion on Gone Girl on September 4 to mark the first event of its kind at Rooftop Film Club.
Anyone hoping to attend the inaugural Rooftop Book Club at Bussey Building Peckham (find it at Roof B, Bussey Building, 133 Rye Lane, SE15 4ST) can get their tickets here . The £32 tier in the list will ensure your spot in the conversation with Beth McColl, as well as a house drink, goody bag, and lounge seat to kick back and watch Gone Girl afterwards!
Find out more about Rooftop Film Club here . Follow Beth McColl’s work here , and check out Everything Is Content every Friday on wherever you get your podcasts!

Club official now in London after Newcastle United transfer approach
Newcastle signed Almiron in a then club-record £21million deal from Atlanta United in January 2019. He has gone to make 209 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 30 times - including the opening goal in last season’s memorable 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League .
But since the turn of the year, there have been major question marks over the Paraguayan’s future. United were approached by a Saudi Pro League club in January and were willing to let Almiron depart, however the player himself decided against making such a major move mid-season.

Speculation has continued into the summer, and interest from Saudi Arabia is still lingering. However, according to Fabrizio Romano , Almiron could be handed an opportunity to return to the United States instead.
Posting on X, formerly known at Twitter , Romano said: “Charlotte FC executive now in London start talks for ambitious move to bring Miguel Almiron back to MLS. Initial approach already made with Newcastle, not an easy deal but Charlotte FC trying. Two days left before end of transfer window in MLS.”
When pressed about further exits to his squad last week, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe refused to dismissed the possibility amid pressures to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
And when recently asked about Almiron specifically, Howe said: "He has been unbelievable for Newcastle. Long before I came but since I have been here he has been an absolutely pivotal and key player.
"We love him, we love his personality and we love working with him. And he's come back with a big smile on his face. So I am looking forward to working with him again."
Almiron, with two years left on his contract, is a player Newcastle can command a reasonably high fee for. It will be interesting to see how the Charlotte approach develops considering MLS clubs don’t tend to sign players for big fees.
It may indeed turn out to be a non-starter.
Howe is keen on signing a right forward this summer with only Almiron and Jacob Murphy as his recognised options. But the current focus is on recruiting a centre-back as talks continue with Crystal Palace over a move for Marc Guehi.

Dominic Solanke: Tottenham agree £65m deal with Bournemouth for striker

Tottenham have agreed a £65m deal with Bournemouth for striker Dominic Solanke, who has now completed his medical.
The deal will see Spurs pay an initial £55m with £10m possible to follow in bonuses. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has targeted centre-forward depth this summer.
He will sign a six-year contract and is expected to be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday for a pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich.

Speaking to Sky Sports earlier this week, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola described Solanke as his key player.
"It's obvious, Dom is the most important player for us. But the numbers are there," he said.
"It's not [just] about the goals, he helps us a lot in the build-up, the press. He doesn't have big weaknesses for us, he makes us a much better team.
"I feel like he's happy here. We cannot control everything, we don't know how the market is going to finish but whatever happens he is a top professional."
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou highlighted the need for another centre forward option when he told football.london: "You know we play a certain way. We demand certain things from a physical perspective from the technical aspects of it that it's going be a striker that fits that mould.
"It's still the area of the park we're really probably the thinnest when I talk about squad-wise at the moment, so obviously that's a focus for us."
Analysis: Solanke would be an ideal fit for Ange's Spurs
Sky Sports' Peter Smith:
"Tottenham are chasing Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke and he could be a game-changer for Ange Postecoglou's side.
"Spurs have been crying out for a centre forward signing since Harry Kane was sold last summer. Richarlison and Heung-min Son both played that role, with the other moving to the left wing, at different times last season. But all Spurs fans know Son is better coming in off the flank, while Richarlison's form and fitness has not been reliable.
"With Spurs back in European competition and looking to push for a high finish they needed a high-quality alternative. Solanke looks ideal.
"He scored 19 goals for Bournemouth last season and at 26 the former Chelsea and Liverpool forward is hitting his prime.
"He is a proper box finisher, with 17 strikes last season coming from inside the area and with Spurs ranking fourth in the Premier League for crosses per game in 2023/24, Solanke can be the man to finish off those moves."
