May you assist on a possible PhD topic on analyzing economic behaviours within environmental, climate and energy domains, from a gender perspective. I seek to further investigate if/to which extent policies in these domains can be deemed economically unfair from a gender perspective, and whether the effectiveness of the policies can be increased while striving for inequalities not being perpetuated.

International Human Resource Management refers to activities that are designed to support organisations in managing human resources at an international level so that competitive advantage can be maintained at both the national and international level. The subject area includes understanding of culture factors, both in terms of beliefs and attitudes of international employees and in relation to international employment legislation. Studying the area provides insights into the way that corporate HR functions can contribute to international business strategy and build functional knowledge of the main developments in the management of expatriates and other forms of international management. Throughout this master's, you'll gain key international business management knowledge to allow you to proceed to professional and managerial careers in private, public and third-sector business.

This programme is centred on employability and professional career readiness. If the first year is completed at an appropriate level, you'll progress to year two. The second year allows you to embark on a year-long company placement which will help you to develop and reflect on your learning in a workplace setting.

You’ll develop an understanding of a range of theories and models used to support and understand a range of issues and problems within international business management. You’ll critically evaluate the roles of business management within the international context, including how policies, programmes, strategies, and resources are developed, selected, and implemented. You’ll apply problem-solving skills to various international business management scenarios to generate strategic options for resolving arising problems. The MSc will provide you with the skills to apply your knowledge and understanding to professional practice and solve business management problems.

Beyond subject knowledge and skills, you’ll gain key transferrable skills which will aid you throughout your professional career. You’ll be able to work effectively in teams and on your own, identify areas for continued professional development, communicate effectively by written and verbal means, apply ICT resources for maximising impact, and evaluate a wide range of graphical and numerical data. This invaluable skillset will make you highly sought after upon graduation.  

You’ll have the opportunity to specialise and choose two optional courses – from measuring and managing performance, financial analysis, managing diversity in business, and project management – to customise your learning and develop your specific interest. Your learning environment

The MSc International Business Management with Advanced Practice programme is taught through a combination of lectures and tutorials, allowing you to get to know and build relationships with the teaching staff, academics, and your peers. Course structure

A range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, seminars, and group work will be used to encourage you to develop intellectual and cognitive skills. All methods will employ, to some extent, the features like didactic exposition, interactive sessions, research, and directed private study.

Case study-based learning is employed throughout the course and is intended to enable you to develop, inter alia, the ability to identify the issues in need of research, apply subject specific knowledge to a realistic and/or practical context, make critical judgements of the merits of a particular argument and present and make reasoned choices between alternative solutions.

The case studies may take the form of real cases or issues in debate at any given moment in time or may be hypothetical problems which are reflective of realistic problems. 

Compared to an undergraduate course, you'll find that this master's degree requires a higher level of independent reading and research.

Core modules, international marketing (30 credits).

Evaluate the decisions and processes undertaken by international marketers to compete in global markets. Look at the design and development of market-responsive programmes. Enhance your understanding of global marketing, including the selling and distribution of products and services in countries worldwide.

International Business in Context (30 credits)

Explore the unique opportunities and challenges of conducting business internationally as globalisation and the digital revolution have increased global connectedness in business. Develop innovative and sustainable solutions and strategies for current and emerging international business issues. Critically analyse approaches to leadership and management in a strategic, international business context to develop diverse stakeholder management acumen and digital business competencies.

Strategic Management and Foresight (30 credits)

International business management research project (60 credits), optional modules (choose one):, hrm in an international and digital context (30 credits), financial decision-making in a multinational corporation (30 credits).

What will i learn on this module.

In this module you will gain an understanding of the academic skills that are required to produce a Masters Dissertation. By the end of the module you will have written a 15000 word Masters dissertation. The areas included are: • Justification for the choice of topic • Appropriate understanding, awareness and critical analysis of existing and up to date literature evidenced by a comprehensive and well-referenced literature review with an extensive reference list • Selection, justification and application of an appropriately rigorous methodology - including limitations of the approach selected • Clear statement of the findings of the research • Critical analysis of the findings • Explicit links between the analysis and the conclusions supported by critical argument • Evidence of original work or thought for example in the form or context of the data collected, analytical process or application of findings

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a combination of one-to-one supervision with a member of academic staff, supervisor directed study and independent study. Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading and preparation for supervision meetings. Independent learning will centre upon you identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to your subject area. Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence. Your supervisor will be an appropriate academic member of staff will be appointed during the semester 2 preresquisite module BM9718 - Research Methods and Analytics for Business Practice. Whilst the aim of the dissertation is to encourage your ownership of the dissertation, the supervisor will provide on-going support by guiding you through the process.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by your supervisor in addition to the module tutor. A comprehensive eLP site will store all the appropriate materials needed to support the development of your dissertation work. There is an electronic reading list indicating which texts, academic reports, conference papers and journal articles should be consulted as the module progresses. You will be supplied with formative feedback on your performance by your supervisor, who will help you develop your dissertation work. You may also receive formative feedback from other relevant staff. It should be noted that your supervisor will provide formative feedback on one full chapter of your dissertation and also give feedback on other chapter outlines but your supervisor will not read full drafts of the dissertation.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment is by Dissertation (100% of the total marks, 15000 words). You will receive summative feedback followed by written comments on the submitted proposal which will indicate areas for improvement. Formative feedback will continue via supervision meetings and summative feedback will be provided following the marking of the dissertation. Feedback sheets are used for both the proposal and the dissertation, blank versions of which will be available from the eLP. The Module Learning Outcomes are addressed through the dissertation component. Standard university principles regarding word length will be applied dissertation. These principles will be available from the eLP site. The dissertation will cover MLO1-5 inclusive.

You will design a research project, assessed through the prerequisite 20-credit module BM9718 Research Methods and Analytics for Business Practice a proposal, and will then work under the supervision of a member of academic staff who will give you appropriate guidance and support throughout the dissertation process whilst encouraging learner autonomy: this is your dissertation and you will have responsibility for decision making as the dissertation proceeds. On completion of this module, you will be able to conduct research and organise the findings into a comprehensive and explicit structure that is critically assessed and is linked to the conclusions drawn. You will demonstrate this by identifying a topic, critically selecting and applying an appropriate research methodology and data collection method(s), demonstrating a rigorous understanding of the relevant theory and literature and showing how these link to the research method(s). We require a First or Upper Second class honours degree (2:1, with 60% average) from a UK university or the overseas equivalent.

When assessing your academic record, we take into account your grade average, position in class and the standing of the institution where you studied your qualification.

NOTE: There is a non-refundable application fee of £60. You should be prompted to pay this within the application portal before you can submit your application. We cannot consider applications until you have paid the application fee.

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2024, the tuition fees are as follows:

• MSc (full-time) UK students (per annum): £17,000 International, including EU, students (per annum): £30,500

The fees quoted above will be fully inclusive for the course tuition, administration and computational costs during your studies.

Refund Policy

Due to the competition for places and limited availability, our courses require a deposit of £1000 to cover non-recoverable costs and secure your place. The deposit will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register on the course.

The deposit is non-refundable, except in the following situations:

• you fail to meet the conditions of your offer (see below for further information); and/or
• you are refused a visa or entry clearance to enter the UK (proof must be submitted)

If an offer has been made specifying an English Language condition which you do not meet, the Admissions Team will require the official certificate of an English Language test taken after the date of offer as evidence that you have attempted to meet your offer conditions for a refund to be approved. The English Language test certificate provided with your application documents will not be accepted as proof that you have attempted to meet your offer conditions as such a certificate will predate the offer.

If an offer has been made specifying an academic condition, the Admissions Team will require the official university documentation showing that you have not met this academic condition from the institution at which you have studied, as evidence for a refund to be approved.

The Admissions Team reserves the right to refuse to refund of any deposit that does not meet with the requirements outlined above.

Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application.
