newspaper essay in english

Importance of Newspaper Essay: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Newspaper is an important media. Its role in the making of the nation or the state cannot be denied. Newspaper lays emphasis on democracy by way of representing public opinions quite objectively. Its approach is certainly impersonal. Objective criticisms of state affairs lead the public to choose the right ways and to uphold the right ideas.

Importance:

Social, political, economical, and other changes take place due to the awareness of the people of a state or a country. And newspaper enables people to be aware of all phenomena which are happening in the country and abroad. Besides, newspaper presents the past and the present days, thereby helping us draw a contrast between the past and the present world. By this way, newspaper helps people predict the future.

Thus, reading of a newspaper strengthens one’s consciousness of the world. If one negates the newspaper, there is little doubt that he or she must retard gradually. The utility of newspaper is not only informative but also constructive because it presents diverse, contradictory views to form a general and well-accepted opinion.

Newspaper is also a common medium of advertisement. Popular brands use to promote their product through newspaper advertisements.

Disadvantages:

But unfortunately, most of the newspapers have now become commercial. Advertisements have been quite oddly covering most of the pages of a newspaper. Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

Newspapers have been an integral part of human civilization for centuries, serving as a crucial source of information, entertainment, and public discourse. The origins of newspapers can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where scribes would handwrite news on papyrus scrolls or wooden tablets. However, the modern newspaper as we know it today emerged in the 15th century with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

The first printed newspaper is believed to be the Relation, published in Strasbourg, Germany, in 1609. This was followed by the Avisa Relation oder Zeitung, published in Germany in 1618, which is considered the first regularly printed newspaper. From there, newspapers spread rapidly across Europe and eventually to the Americas, evolving into a powerful medium for disseminating news, opinions, and advertisements.

The evolution of newspapers has been a remarkable journey, reflecting the changing societal landscape and technological advancements. Initially, newspapers were handwritten or printed on simple presses, with limited circulation and content. As printing technology improved and literacy rates increased, newspapers became more widely available and influential.

The 19th century witnessed a significant transformation in the newspaper industry with the introduction of new printing techniques, such as the rotary press and linotype machines, which allowed for faster and more efficient production. This period also saw the rise of investigative journalism, with newspapers playing a crucial role in exposing societal injustices and holding authorities accountable.

The 20th century brought about further innovations, including the use of photographs, color printing, and the integration of radio and television news broadcasts. The advent of the internet and digital technologies in the late 20th century revolutionized the newspaper industry once again, leading to the emergence of online editions, multimedia content, and new business models.

The advent of electronic media is diminishing the habit of reading newspapers, especially among the youth. The young generation seems to be hysterical by the more easily accessible visual media. They are more hooked to instant news because of the fast-paced life that is plaguing society as a whole. Everything has become visual and the media makes it so attractive for the users that they are forgetting the essence of our heritage newspapers. They are running out of the habit of reading newspapers. The newspaper is a valuable source of information among people. It is easily available in every language. The newspaper is a common thing among every class or section of society. In this technological era, newspapers shouldn’t lose their identity. The Newspaper comes under print media.

Even though social media and other electronic media are far more easily accessible, let us not forget the importance of reading the newspaper and inculcate this habit of reading in our children so that they continue with the legacy. Newspapers are still given top preference even over the twenty-four hours TV channels. A good newspaper reflects the society and values of public opinion. It provides solutions to various social and economic problems. It should be free from the intervention of the government and it should be fair in its reporting.

Newspapers are such a cheap and handy means of communication of news and people can easily afford it. What makes them low-priced for the volume of reading material that they supply are the advertisements that they publish. Such large scale advertisements cannot have any better and largely circulated means as the newspapers and are a real help to the business and the trading class. Advertisements of all sorts, of goods of all variety, are all condensed in the space of the ten, twelve, or fifteen pages of a newspaper and one can know what is available where.

Points to remember in Newspaper Essay

Newspapers have also a great part to play in forming public opinions. Every political party tries to own a newspaper.

But should newspapers give a political coloured news? That is what they should not. Newspapers are the best means of conveying news and it is expected of them to give news in an unbiased manner. People should be rightly educated they should receive news in the form in which it is. Even the editorials should be having an impartial viewpoint what is right should be called right, what is wrong should stand condemned. But this is what does not always happen.

Reading a newspaper is the beginning of the morning for many; it is an excellent source of information regarding sports, geography, science, entertainment, and many others, but after digitalization, the use of newspapers is getting lower day by day. We can say that the importance of newspapers is being underestimated in this modern world but are you aware that newspapers are essential to our lives in many ways?

Those days the newspapers were censored by the government due to the foreign news and the prices. After a few days, when the English government removed the censorship, newspapers started selling in London and many other cities, and by 1830, the newspaper was printing more than thousands of copies at Low prices.

We all know that during 1700, India wasn't an independent country, and this is why during this time period, when the world was busy making new updates, every good thing which came into the country was slow to reach, and the British Government introduced it according to their own convenience (although they were giving lesser profits to Indians they bought many goods). The news was exchanged on numerous pages much before that.

The Bengal Gazette, however, is the first fully-formed newspaper. As the early newspapers were published in English, they served no purpose for the general population and were solely an outlet for the British.

After that, Bengali newspapers like Sudha Varshan, Kesari, Vande Mataram, etc., were edited to struggle against the British and were banned by the government, but till then, the Indian public learned how to use this service to communicate with each other and have profit.

Newspaper is loved by various people as it is part of their morning schedules but not only for that, and it is really beneficial in many ways. Here are some main points in the benefits of newspaper daily.

Even if newspapers have numerous advantages, there are a few drawbacks to anything helpful to us, and this is why even newspaper has an issue which is as follows:

Today's newspapers not only serve as a source of information in various fields, but they also give some credit to members of all social groups. Both local and international newspaper features stories on athletics, entertainment, academics, and controversies. There are additional publications of pieces on humor, literature, spirituality, and other topics. Each newspaper publishes all that without fear, whether it's a piece of significant information on the administration or a big commercial secret. Additionally, news from Bollywood and Hollywood is given extra attention, and so many papers have a specific page for it.

This may amaze you, but the newspaper plays an important role in the growth of the education system in various countries as it represents a lot of practical examples and information for students regarding what they learned in books.

Teachers can use newspaper articles to explain various theories of economics and politics to their students.

Students gain practical information from utilizing news articles as examples since they can learn more about the topic from the newspaper. Since the news is popular and has connections to many real-world applications of the academic areas. It is also beneficial for students who are preparing for various competitive exams.

Newspapers have a crucial role in educating us about the world. They raise our awareness of and familiarity with current events. People now instantly receive news on their smartphones and computers as the world becomes increasingly digital. As a result, they choose digital news above newspapers.

I think the newspaper is one of the essential products for the student as it gives them many benefits such as increasing vocabulary power and current affairs. Students who face issues with English Vocabulary will be benefited from reading English newspapers.

Students who are learning Economy or Political Science get all the latest updates and information regarding their subjects with the help of newspapers. In contrast, Hindi students can learn different new words and use those words with the help of newspapers. In short, they can get information regarding their subjects and interests with the help of a newspaper; even a Newspaper has separate portions for it, just like an economic page or fun pages for kids, games, quizzes, and other useful stuff for the students, it also has weekly blogs for the students of literature to help the literature students.

Starting to read the newspaper helps students not just with their academics but also with their basic knowledge, understanding of local culture, and awareness of current events.

In addition to this, weekly newspaper sections such as career pages, career points, jobs/careers, etc. help students learn and gain an understanding of various occupations, tests, and career-related concerns.

If we are talking about the importance of newspapers in India for small business owners and shopkeepers, it is part of daily life for many. It helps them in understanding the current economies, what are the latest market costs, new laws by the government, and other government information. It helps them understand market demands and what the supplies are, and further details regarding the markets. Also, during their free time, they use it as the best time pass.

In newspapers, there are different special blogs for homemakers in both Hindi and English Newspapers where they can learn about new ideas to decorate their houses and new recipes to cook. They can also buy the weekly magazines coming with the newspaper, but the most exciting part which excites these housewives is the content regarding how they can improve and beautify these recipes.

New working professionals need to be careful and well aware of whatever is going on in the world so that they don't leave behind in the world of competition and the newspaper helps a lot in this. So anyone, no matter what profession they work in, should get knowledge regarding whatever is going on in the world regarding their field, and this helps them in getting more chances to be paid well and earn more job opportunities.

No doubt a newspaper is needed for politicians as most of the newspaper is covered with the most important news and what the politician as a public representative wants to convey to the public and at the same time get information about public opinion, which is very important for any politician to proceed further with their plan. They also learn about a specific region's concern and what other politicians are doing locally around the nation.

Additionally, it aids in their own political brand development and placement inside the republic.

Newspapers are one of the main components of city life for elderly people. They have grown up reading newspapers. They gain a better understanding of how individuals, societies, and nations are faring in the present. What was it like for them as children?

Now they are in a position to apply their expertise and experiences to assist the younger population, their individual family, and societies deal with the issues of the day. For senior citizens, the newspaper serves as a kind of companion. When they feel lonely or bored at home, it aids them in passing the time.

News articles have varying effects on readers. Others use the news to learn lessons, many use it to gain general knowledge, some find it hilarious, and some are using it as a source of joy.

However, only teachers can perceive why something is happening; for example, only economists, professors, or experts can grasp if there is a financial crisis in the nation. They can direct kids using this knowledge. Additionally, they can demonstrate strategies for dealing with different economic situations.

Because of this, I believe that if teachers read the news, they can keep kids up to date, enhance their education, or train them how to face potential financial, social, and personal troubles.

One of the largest industries in the world is newspaper publishing. Publishers of newspapers make money from advertisements and by selling these newspapers. They work really hard to bring such news and write it and thus it is very necessary for them to sell their hard work and earn money from it.

The management, publishing, reporting, advertising, marketing, designing, and other aspects of the newspaper industry include a variety of people. Publishers of newspapers also provided jobs for various posts.

The people deserve to know what the administration is doing; hence the newspaper is crucial. What new regulations exist? What recent legislation was approved by a leader of a political party? Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy as it brings to light where government policy is lacking.

People will be better able to comprehend their politician's political philosophy and position on many issues, such as what the administration is doing to boost GDP, by doing. Which political party is considering what type of move, etc. Individuals can comprehend past, present, and future government operations by reading about such events in the news. Because of this, we should consider the newspaper to be essential for the principles of democracy.

While internet marketing is widespread and is highly efficient and focused nowadays, traditional advertising, like newspaper advertising, is a way for businesses, companies, and political leaders to reach out to the general public in the context of advertising and marketing campaigns.

For many people, it provides a job and a source of money. The newspaper occasionally serves as documentation and proof of events. The supply of information and statistics that aid in boosting a nation's citizens' knowledge and understanding is the most crucial.

The news these days includes unique entertainment items in addition to the news. The newspaper Includes articles on the entertainment world, and people get to know a lot of information about upcoming movies, experiences & like dislikes of their favorite actors and actress, etc. It also includes news related to the sports world and articles on different sports personalities.

Newspapers are essential to our daily lives because they provide data and information from around the world. A newspaper is a crucial tool for information on scandal and injustice. Politics, social concerns, sports, the economy, movies, and the stock market are the main themes of broad interest in the newspaper.

Newspapers are a type of mass media that speak out about societal concerns like dowry and child labor and also about government policies and international news. Newspapers also provide information on upcoming movies and television series, as well as a database of cinemas with movie schedules. The extent of a newspaper's commitment to accuracy and honest journalism determines its integrity and reputation. In the end, it is the least expensive and most effective weapon, and the significance of newspapers can be seen.

Perceptions of the importance of local newspapers

The survey indicated that newspapers play a far more complex role in the civic life of communities than many Americans believe.

On the surface, most people do not feel that their local newspaper is a key source that they rely on for local information.  For instance, when asked, “If your local newspaper no longer existed, would that have a major impact, a minor impact, or no impact on your ability to keep up with information and news about your local community?” a large majority of Americans, 69%, believe the death of their local newspaper would have no impact (39%) or only a minor impact (30%) on their ability to get local information.

Younger adults, age 18-29, were especially unconcerned. Fully 75% say their ability to get local information would not be affected in a major way by the absence of their local paper.  The same was true of heavier technology users: 74% of home broadband users say losing their paper would have no impact or only a minor impact on their ability to get local information.

Yet when asked about specific local topics and which sources they rely on for that information, it turns out that many adults are quite reliant on newspapers and their websites. Of the 16 specific local topics queried, newspapers ranked as the most, or tied as the most, relied upon source for 11 of the 16.

Local newspapers continue to be a key information source

Among all adults, newspapers were cited as the most relied-upon source or tied for most relied upon for crime, taxes, local government activities, schools, local politics, local jobs, community/neighborhood events, arts events, zoning information, local social services, and real estate/housing.

This dependence on newspapers for so many local topics sets it apart from all other sources of local news.  The internet, which was cited as the most relied upon source for five of the 16 topics, was a distant second to newspapers in terms of widespread use and value.

This sense from the public that newspapers are a place where they can turn to for information on a wide range of local topics, more so than other sources, confirms findings from other Pew Research Center studies, particularly a report on which news organizations tend to break new information in local news reporting conducted in Baltimore and research on what news is available from different sources produced as part of the State of the News Media 2006 report. 2

6

The problem for newspapers is that many of these topics are followed by a relatively small percentage of the public. As noted in Part 2 of this report, just 30% of adults get information about zoning, 35% about social services, 42% about local government, and 43% about real estate. Thus, overall, the total number of Americans who rely on newspapers for the local information that matters to them is smaller than is the case for other platforms such as television.

For instance, 48% of those who get information about taxes turn to newspapers, more than double the percentage who turn to the next most popular platforms, the internet (20%) and TV news (19%).  But when translated as a percentage of all citizens, just 22% of Americans rely on newspapers for tax information. Thus, while newspapers command this subject area, most people simply do not seek out information about the subject of local taxes.

People may be making quite logical choices in this. Past PEJ studies have found that local newspapers typically have 70 to 100 stories a day. The typical half-hour local TV newscast is closer to 15. 3 So it is logical that newspapers would offer coverage of more topics in a community, while television might concentrate on a more limited number that attract the widest audience. Indeed, as PEJ found in a 2006 study, “In local metro dailies, citizens were far more likely to learn about things like taxes, education, zoning commissions and the activities of government than they would in most other media.” 4

This, however, also has implications about what could happen if a newspaper in town were to disappear. If television has focused on covering weather, traffic, and breaking news, and that is what people look to this platform for, will television begin to cover taxes and zoning and education if the local newspaper no longer exists? Would new digital sources emerge to cover the hole if a local newspaper cut back its coverage or vanished altogether? And would the approach of these new sources be fully journalistic in nature?

Newspapers matter less to adults under age 40 as a local information source

Generational preferences add yet another layer of complexity. For adults under age 40, newspapers do not hold nearly the same appeal. Consider this stark difference: among all adults, newspapers are the clear top source for seven local topics (and tied with the internet as the top source for four other topics). Yet, among adults under 40 newspapers are the clear top choice for one topic, taxes, are tied with TV news for another topic, crime, and tie with the internet for four other topic areas. (The specifics of these differences are spelled out in Part 5 of this report.)

For all ages, the strength of newspapers comes from aggregating an audience by offering a wide range of information, even if each subject or story has limited audience. That model may be vital from a civic standpoint, but it is traditionally expensive and it is not clear what the incentive is to replicate it if newspapers were to disappear.

500 Words Essay On Newspaper

For a large number of people, reading the newspaper along with a cup of tea is a daily morning ritual. Newspapers are powerful weapons that influence people’s opinions. Some newspapers are also published on a weekly and monthly basis. Some newspapers provide a special edition on a particular weekday.

History Of Newspapers

Newspapers are believed to have been started around the 17th century. By the 19th century, the common person became familiar with them. It is thought that Acta Diurna was the first newspaper published in Rome, around 59 BC. However, any proof or evidence has not been found.

Gazette Bengal, 1970 | In India, a British Englishman named James Augustus Hicky started a newspaper in Bengal. The year was 1780 and the paper was called Gazette Bengal. It was followed by the printing of many other newspapers such as the Madras Gazette, Calcutta Gazette and Bombay Herald.

Importance And Uses

Newspapers play an important role, especially in developing and democratic countries like ours. Along with news, various government schemes are also shared through newspapers. Regularly reading the newspaper improves our vocabulary and speaking skills, and improves reading speed and accuracy.

I was not an avid reader of the newspaper. We used to get the Times of India daily., but I couldn't find the motivation to pick it up and read the news. However, when the Taj Hotel in Mumbai was attacked by foreign insurgents, reading the newspaper became almost as important as reading any religious text. For a few weeks straight I would run to greet the delivery man and collect the paper by hand. I was amended on staying updated with the news to track the events which transpired and all that was happening in the aftermath. Before I knew it, reading the news became an important part of my daily routine.

E-Newspapers

With technology penetrating every aspect of our lives, newspapers have also got their online versions. These are called E-newspapers . Some of the merits of E-newspapers are:-

Eco-Friendly | We know that some of our resources are non-renewable and that we are already facing climatic challenges. Online newspapers save a huge amount of paper and thus, they are more eco-friendly.

Cost-Effective | E-newspapers cost almost nothing. Free PDFs can be created and are easy to download. We can also share them easily with anyone we are willing to. We can also get offers on subscriptions.

Easy To Update | If there is any update regarding the specific news it can be updated easily. It can be edited from anywhere in the world. Any changes can be quickly made.

Accessibility | Anyone can access E-newspapers from any part of the world. These are available at any time. We can read while travelling or while doing any other activity.

Newspapers are a vital part of our lives. Reading a newspaper daily is a good habit as it fills you up on the happenings from around the world. It improves your general knowledge and keeps you abreast with current affairs. Moreover, news articles are a great source of reading material to learn new words, phrases and expressions. With various sections like international, national and city news, entertainment, science and technology, business and economy, sports and more, newspapers have something interesting for all. Children should develop the habit of reading the newspaper every day. One way to get children interested in reading newspapers is by asking them to share their views about newspapers through an essay writing exercise.

When students of classes 1, 2 and 3 write an essay about newspapers, they will need to include some facts about the print medium. Let us help your child write an essay in English for lower primary classes with some simple tips and sample essays.

Writing an essay on the importance of the newspapers is a common activity in primary school. Before your child begins writing an essay, it would help to take note of these key points to remember:

  • An essay has three parts – an introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Your introduction can comprise the definition of a newspaper and how so many people are dependent on reading newspapers to gain information about the world.
  • The body of your essay can cover information on the significance of newspapers. If you are a student in higher grades, you will be expected to write lengthier essays, for which you can split your body into two or three paragraphs and provide more information on the history of newspapers, the disadvantages of newspapers, and how a world without newspapers would be.
  • Conclude your essay by stating the importance of newspapers and how we can improve the quality of the content in newspapers.

When children write an essay for classes 1 and 2, we recommend that they start writing on the topic point-wise. Following are 10 lines on newspapers that will help your child write a short essay on the topic.

  • News that is printed on paper is called a newspaper.
  • Newspapers are generally delivered to our doorstep each morning.
  • Newspapers are printed in various languages.
  • The newspaper is one of the oldest means of mass communication that provides the reader with all the latest information worldwide.
  • It is the most reliable and authentic source of information about current affairs.
  • The first newspaper that was printed in India was the Bengal Gazette.
  • Usually, people like to read the newspaper that comprises more information and news about their local area or city.
  • Newspapers have multiple sections for various topics, such as economy, politics, entertainment, sports, and more.
  • Newspapers contain photographs that explain the news in a better manner.
  • There are many newspapers printed on a daily, weekly, and fortnightly basis.

A short paragraph on the importance of newspapers should cover all the important information about newspapers to include some facts along with some views and opinions to make it a perfect read for little kids. Following is a short paragraph on the importance of newspapers:

A newspaper is quite an influential and powerful tool that provides information to all its readers. It is one of the primary means of mass communication through which people can sit in one place and know about the whole world. Moreover, newspapers are also an excellent source of knowledge. We receive our daily news with the help of newspapers early each morning. The newspaper is a reliable source that gives us information only after the truth of the matter has been thoroughly investigated. Newspapers are available everywhere and are the most economical sources of information.

As kids move up to higher grades, they will be required to write longer essays. Following is an example of a short essay on the importance of newspapers for kids.

A newspaper is a printed publication of news. Newspapers are brought to our doorsteps early each morning to keep us aware of the happenings across the world. Media houses with journalists publish newspapers that we read. The first newspaper in the world was published in Germany in 1906. Newspapers cover news on all kinds of subjects, such as social, political, economic, or entertainment. Several stock market analysts and shareowners also read newspapers to evaluate their decisions for investments. Though the news is available on various digital devices these days, such as tablets, phones, and computers, newspapers still remain the favourite medium of news for most readers. In this age of the world coming closer, newspapers play an important role in increasing awareness about global events.

Once kids are in class 3, they need to write lengthier essays covering more information about the given topic. For this, they will need to research on the given topic in detail to be able to write a good essay. They can refer to this example for gathering points on the importance of newspapers:

Newspapers deliver information from around the world. They touch all facets of human life and provide us with the latest insights into the events happening worldwide. Newspapers deal with scientific, social-political, and cultural activities and are also a good means of business advertisement.

Other than being informative, newspapers cover entertainment beat with the addition of various niches, such as lifestyle and fashion. Therefore, there is something interesting for everyone. As a society, we gain multiple benefits from newspapers. Reading a good newspaper is an excellent way of knowing what is happening around us. They bring the world closer together by keeping people on one end of the globe informed about the happenings in the other corner of the world.

Newspapers have various sections devoted to serving people with varied interests. They also devote a section for children where we can read comics, solve some puzzles, word games and crosswords. Newspapers can help one develop intellectual faculties and should be read with great zeal, interest, and enthusiasm.

The advent of electronic media has played a huge role in people losing the habit of reading newspapers, especially among the youth. The young generation is more attracted to and comfortable with the easily accessible digital media. However, newspapers have their own significance due to which they are still widely read.

The Significance Of Newspapers

One of the main functions of a newspaper is to keep the readers informed of all the happenings across the world. Newspapers offer people all kinds of details, no matter which part of the word we are in. Furthermore, it helps us become informed citizens. Whenever there is any change in a country’s rules and regulations, the important notice gets printed in the newspapers to make sure we are aware of them. Newspapers provide authenticity like no other medium as it is a written document of affairs. They are usually well-researched and balanced narratives of important events.

How Will Be The World Be Without Newspapers?

A life without newspapers will be very isolated indeed. Our morning breakfast won’t be accompanied by reading informative news and interesting editorials. Not just for current affairs, old archives of newspapers too, are very important for us to learn about the history of any country. In a world without newspapers, we will miss out on this very important documentation of day-to-day events.

While writing an essay on the importance of newspapers, your child will learn all about newspapers and how essential they are to the country, society and economy. Children will also know how crucial it is for all of us to read newspapers and stay abreast with the latest happenings in the world.

1. Who Was The Inventor of Newspapers In India?

James Augustus Hicky launched the first printed newspaper in India by the name of Hicky’s Bengal Gazette.

2. Are Newspapers Still In Use As Much As They Were In The Past?

The newspaper industry and print media overall are steadily declining as readers have switched to other electronic, digital and social media platforms.

3. How Do Newspapers Help the Students?

Reading newspapers improve general knowledge and also keep students informed about current affairs. Good knowledge of different subjects gives students a competitive edge over their peers.

Excess of advertisement reduces the importance of the newspaper:

In ancient times newspapers were used only for the publication of news. But nowadays, in newspapers, advertising has become more objective to make a profit.

Readers buy their newspapers to read the news and their hands get frustrated due to the brightness of the advertisements.

Influence of a powerful person reduces the importance of the newspaper:

Many times we see that the influence of a powerful person is reflected in our local newspapers. Sometimes news related to a particular person is hidden, sometimes some news is overpriced.

Priority to sector-specific news:

In today’s time, local newspapers are getting more prominence by not giving priority to national newspapers to advertise in the area.

Changes in the language of newspapers reduce the importance of the newspaper:

Build a Corporate Culture That Works

an essay on importance of newspaper

There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.

All too often a culture is described as a set of anodyne norms, principles, or values, which do not offer decision-makers guidance on how to make difficult choices when faced with conflicting but equally defensible courses of action.

The trick to making a desired culture come alive is to debate and articulate it using dilemmas. If you identify the tough dilemmas your employees routinely face and clearly state how they should be resolved—“In this company, when we come across this dilemma, we turn left”—then your desired culture will take root and influence the behavior of the team.

To develop a culture that works, follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value statement.

Start by thinking about the dilemmas your people will face.

Idea in Brief

The problem.

There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their corporate culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.

What Usually Happens

How to fix it.

Follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value.

At the beginning of my career, I worked for the health-care-software specialist HBOC. One day, a woman from human resources came into the cafeteria with a roll of tape and began sticking posters on the walls. They proclaimed in royal blue the company’s values: “Transparency, Respect, Integrity, Honesty.” The next day we received wallet-sized plastic cards with the same words and were asked to memorize them so that we could incorporate them into our actions. The following year, when management was indicted on 17 counts of conspiracy and fraud, we learned what the company’s values really were.

US Surgeon General calls for warning labels on social media amid mental health 'emergency'

an essay on importance of newspaper

The U.S. Surgeon General called for social media companies to be required to use safety warning labels in a New York Times opinion essay published Monday.

Citing research that shows social media could be negatively impacting youth mental health , Dr. Vivek H. Murthy said a surgeon general's warning on social media platforms, similar to those on tobacco and alcohol products, could raise awareness for parents about the potential harm of the platforms.

"One of the worst things for a parent is to know your children are in danger yet be unable to do anything about it," Murthy wrote. "That is how parents tell me they feel when it comes to social media — helpless and alone in the face of toxic content and hidden harms."

NetChoice , a trade organization representing some social media companies, said in a statement shared with USA TODAY that the responsibility should be on the parents to protect their children's mental health, not the government or tech companies.

Research shows social media could come with benefit and harm

Murthy said social media is a major factor in the mental health crisis among young people, which he called "an emergency."

Social media has become nearly ubiquitous among youth. The  2023 U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health  found that nearly  95% of youth aged 13 to 17 use a social media platform , with more than a third saying they use it "almost constantly."

The advisory concluded that more research is needed to fully understand the impacts of social media. But it showed there are some benefits and "ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents."

Potential benefits identified in the advisory were community, connection and self expression. It also stated that social media can support mental health of LGBTQ youth to help develop their identities. Additionally, seven out of 10 girls of color reported encountering identity-affirming content related to race on social media, the advisory stated.

Potential harms of using social media included greater risk of suffering from depression and anxiety. Some studies also showed greater risk of negative health outcomes for adolescents girls including disordered eating and poor sleep.

Murthy praises dairy recall, Boeing response as examples of swift action

In the NYT letter, Murthy pointed to the F.A.A.'s swift grounding of Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes after a door plug came off mid-flight earlier this year and widespread recalls of cheese products due to risk of listeria contamination .

"Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food?," Murthy wrote. "These harms are not a failure of willpower and parenting; they are the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability."

Several state bills seeking to limit youth access to social media have been passed by legislatures but blocked in court. Those lawsuits were often brought by NetChoice.

NetChoice vice president and general counsel Carl Szabo said in a statement that the onus is on parents to protect their children from harm online.

"A warning label oversimplifies this issue, and it is a simplistic way to approach this that assumes that every child is the exact same. In reality, every child is different and struggles with their own challenges," Szabo said. "Parents and guardians are the most appropriately situated to handle these unique needs of their children—not the government or tech companies."

Understanding the Definition and Importance of Phylogeny in Biological Sciences

This essay about phylogeny highlights its role as a key component of biological exploration, illustrating how it interweaves stories of adaptation, divergence, and interrelatedness throughout history. It discusses how phylogeny uses anatomical, genetic, and fossil evidence to trace evolutionary relationships and its practical applications in medicine, agriculture, and conservation. The essay underscores the importance of phylogeny in understanding biodiversity, ecological interactions, and the evolutionary processes that shape life on Earth, emphasizing its significance beyond mere academic interest.

How it works

Embarking on the intricate odyssey of life’s evolutionary saga, phylogeny remains a fundamental pillar of biological exploration, artfully interweaving tales of adaptation, divergence, and interrelatedness across the ages. This enthralling narrative sheds light on the past, present, and future of organisms, offering profound insights into the vibrant mosaic of biodiversity that adorns our planet.

At its essence, phylogeny acts as a guide through the currents of evolutionary relationships, tracing lineages back to common ancestors and unfurling into the myriad forms of life that exist today.

It’s a journey of discovery, propelled by a diverse array of evidence, from anatomical similarities and genetic blueprints to the fossilized remnants of ancient times.

Anatomical features serve as landmarks on this evolutionary journey, highlighting shared ancestries and divergent paths through the lenses of form and function. Comparative anatomy functions as a detective, unraveling the threads of evolutionary history woven into the fabric of biological diversity.

Genetic information, a modern marvel, has revolutionized phylogenetic research, providing a molecular map of evolutionary connections encoded within the DNA of organisms. Through the language of DNA sequences, researchers decode the symphony of life, uncovering hidden relationships and untangling the complexities of evolutionary lineage with unparalleled precision.

Fossilized remains, like echoes from the depths of time, offer tantalizing glimpses into bygone eras, providing tangible evidence of evolutionary transitions and extinct lineages. Paleontologists, akin to time travelers, meticulously reconstruct the mosaic of ancient life, enriching our understanding of phylogenetic puzzles that span epochs.

Beyond academic curiosity, phylogeny holds practical significance across various fields. In medicine, it acts as a guide for navigating the evolutionary landscapes of pathogens, aiding efforts to combat emerging diseases and develop effective treatments.

In agriculture, phylogenetic insights enable farmers to cultivate resilient crops endowed with traits honed by millions of years of natural selection. By harnessing the genetic reservoirs of wild ancestors, breeders unlock the potential to enhance food security in the face of a changing climate.

Conservation biology finds a valuable ally in phylogeny, as it reveals the evolutionary tapestry of ecosystems, informing strategies to preserve biodiversity and protect endangered species. By prioritizing conservation efforts based on evolutionary distinctiveness, scientists strive to safeguard the irreplaceable branches of the tree of life.

Moreover, phylogeny reveals the intricate dance of ecological interactions, uncovering the evolutionary threads that intertwine to form the fabric of ecosystems. From coevolutionary dynamics to the harmonious interactions of mutualistic relationships, phylogenetic perspectives deepen our understanding of the complex web of life that sustains our biosphere.

In evolutionary biology, phylogeny serves as a framework for hypothesis testing and unraveling the mysteries of evolutionary processes. Through comparative analyses spanning taxa and disciplines, scientists uncover the drivers of diversification, adaptation, and extinction, painting a more nuanced portrait of life’s evolutionary journey.

In summary, phylogeny transcends mere scientific inquiry; it stands as a testament to the interconnectedness and resilience of life on Earth. As we delve deeper into its intricate depths, we not only gain a richer understanding of our evolutionary heritage but also foster a profound appreciation for the diverse tapestry of life that surrounds us.

The Most Important Thing I Can Do for My Trans Daughter

an essay on importance of newspaper

M y father was neither talkative nor demonstrative. When I was growing up, my mother, who in retrospect probably could’ve used a little more emotional intelligence from him, called him “low-amplitude Dave.” When my wife told him she was pregnant with our first child, he said, simply, “Oh, neat.” I didn’t feel unloved, but if you were to ask my sister and me what he cared about most when we were little, we would’ve answered: chores.

Once, during one of his rare appearances at my Little League games, on a blind swing I hit the only home run of my short career; from the bleachers, he gave me a tiny, taciturn salute, a flick above his brow. Such pride. Approval. It was like the moment at the end of the movie Babe , when James Cromwell turns to his little pink buddy and says, “That’ll do, pig, that’ll do.” I’ve dined on that slight gesture for years. I still summon it, occasionally, when I’m feeling low: crack ; that’ll do, pig, that’ll do.

We weren’t close. Could I have used a more dialed-in father? Did I frequently feel adrift and too on my own as a kid? Would I have benefited from some more legible fatherly affection now and then? Probably. But no one is perfect. And as my wife likes to point out, it’s not as though he’s the only one in the family who might consider the way I move through the world genuinely mystifying. The distance between us is not entirely his fault.

When you become a parent, the world tilts in such unexpected ways, and it seems only natural to think about your own childhood again. It’s such a daunting task—to take care of someone and keep them safe and happy. You’ve got this little, helpless person, and only a certain amount of time to get this right. So: what does it mean to be a good dad? What is one’s basic responsibility as a parent? Old memories come back, unbidden. You sift through them with new eyes, looking for clues, for clarity.

When I was 11, my family sailed for weeks off the coast of Vancouver Island. It was wild up there, and wonderful; we read books, turned over rocks looking for crabs; days passed without seeing other boats or people at all. But five days in, we got caught in gale-force winds, and could do nothing but shelter near a small island on our small sailboat, far from the mainland. I know now that we were, in fact, in real danger, we shouldn’t have been caught out there, and it’s a miracle that something bad didn’t happen. But all I remember is the sound of the wind, the rain, and my parents talking very quietly to one another. My sister and I weren’t worried, even though we should’ve been.

When I think about this now, what I remember most is waking up early, when it was still dark, and hearing my dad topside, checking the anchor, walking the deck, and returning below to unfurl his charts and listen to the weather on the radio. That weather voice filled the silent cabin—it was emotionless, robotic as it called the wind speeds, and I remember my dad, hunched over, making notes on his chart. He noticed I was awake in my sleeping bag, looked over, and smiled; he said nothing, and I listened to the wind until I drifted back to sleep. I was able to do this, I think, because I knew he was there, checking the lines, charting the course, rising to do it again quietly, asking for nothing, a picture of vigilance and pure concentration.

And it’s occurred to me over my years as a parent that perhaps in this memory is the baseline I’ve been looking for, the one thing a father should always be able to do for his kids. Let them know that you understand how to keep them safe, that the anchors are well-set, and that they will be shielded from the very worst weather. Later, perhaps, you can say: such a close call, barely made it out of that one! But at the time, in your little sailboat, with the wind just waiting to dash you on the rocks, the story you wish to tell your children is this: this might be scary, but we will get through this just fine, you are taken care of, do not worry.

My daughter is 12 now. She is happy, open, a glorious weirdo, a truly marvelous kid. And when, two years ago, she told us she was trans, the biggest surprise was how easy it was to hear and receive this information, and how right it felt (to her, to us). The adjustments were small, easily hurtled: her school was welcoming, her friends supportive (there’s a lovely generation coming down the pike, by the way). Her younger brother quickly became the sweetest little gender warrior around. We are lucky not only to have her in our lives, but to live in a community that sees her and celebrates for who she is (doctors, teachers, neighbors, friends). Everyone she meets loves her immediately. I am not kidding about that. It’s a quality she must’ve inherited from her mother, who is 100% less mystifying than me.

But it’s one thing as a parent to feel lucky and settled in how things are in one’s close community, another to know, and be repeatedly reminded of, just how hostile this country is becoming to people like her, and to feel helpless in the face of it. Laws are on the books outlawing gender-affirming care (with more on the way), and there are states to which we cannot, will not, travel for fear of something happening to our daughter while there.

The level of vitriol and hatred directed at trans folks is appalling and terrifying. And why? For what? As a parent, you want to say to your child: walk out into the world, it’s waiting for you. But this country has tipped, and feels on the verge of denying her, wholesale, very basic individual rights. How am I supposed to protect her from that? And how am I supposed to prepare her for a world that seems deeply invested in preventing her from being the person she knows she is and deserves to be?

This is not rhetorical. I’m asking seriously. What do you do? How do you cope with and manage this knowledge as a parent? And then how do you distill it, temper it, for your nearly teenage kid so she understands? And how do you do this without making her more afraid? If you have an answer, you can text me at three in the morning. I’ll be awake.

My daughter and I recently flew to Seattle to see my dad, who is now in memory care. I was ready with her passport at TSA, prepared to watch the pat-downs and tell the screener she was trans if necessary. I was vigilant standing outside the women’s bathroom in case something happened while she was using it. I endured, like all fathers, men of all ages quick-glancing my too-young daughter in a certain way that made me want to scream. We passed through, without the trouble I was ready for.

When we saw my dad in his new room, he reached out to both of us, embraced us. He doesn’t make much sense when he speaks now, but he did know my daughter and saw her as she wishes to be seen, introduced her to all his new friends on the memory floor as his granddaughter, and me as his son, who’s made his life elsewhere. Everything about this place was new to me, unfamiliar, but he seemed at ease.

I wanted to ask him about his experience of that fierce wind when we were all on the boat, but for some reason I couldn’t. I was just happy to be in the same room, and to hear the texture of his voice, and see him laugh as my daughter told him stories from school he most likely didn’t understand. Once, when I was sitting next to him, he put his arm around me and rubbed my back affectionately for a long time—something he’s never done. My mom’s jaw just about hit the floor. If I could’ve, I would’ve stayed in that moment forever, but it was our last day, and we had to head home.

More dire election news followed us on the concourse televisions as my daughter and I rolled our bags through the crowd. But we chattered away, rode the shuttle that would take us to our gate, ate at the airport restaurants. She was as happy as I’ve seen her, thrilled to have spent time with her grandparents and soon be on another plane. She was already planning what she wanted to see the next time she was in Seattle.

I wonder now, a few months after that visit, what my father would’ve said if I had asked. I imagine he would’ve admitted he was scared, and that we were lucky the boat didn’t sink, and no one was hurt, and isn’t that something? In my new memory of him, the one that lies like good weather over all the rest, is the feeling of his hand on my back. I don’t know how he meant it, but to me it said, simply, and in a way I could finally see: you are loved.

There is so much outside of our control. We are all, to varying degrees, at the mercy of the elements. But you do get to choose how you secure the lines on your small boats, how you manage your own distress while you wait, and hope. That hand on my back—it laid to rest an uncertainty I’d carried into my adult life. And though my wife and I can make no promises to our daughter about what her future in this country looks like, what we can do is love her, demonstrably and in no uncertain terms. We can take the guesswork out of that equation, at least. And until we see what is coming next, that will have to be enough.

UPSC Essays Simplified: Ideation and Brainstorming of the topics – the second step

How can the 12 qc technique help you to write a good essay our expert takes you through the second stage of writing an essay in upsc essentials' new series. don't miss the essay exercise towards the end of the article..

an essay on importance of newspaper

How to write essays for UPSC Civil Services Exams?   This is one of the most popular questions among aspirants. In UPSC Essentials’ special series  UPSC Essays Simplified , we take you through various steps of writing a good essay. While there is no set formula or fixed criteria prescribed,  Manas Srivastava  talks to  Ravi Kapoor , our expert, in this new series who guides the aspirants with a simplified framework on how to write a good essay.

Don’t miss  ‘The Essay Exercise’  towards the end of the article. Ravi Kapoor focuses on the following steps of pre-writing and writing stages which will help aspirants to write a ‘good essay’.

an essay on importance of newspaper

)

Today, we will focus on Step 2.

About our Expert:   Ravi Kapoor, an IRS officer , has now ditched his coveted rank of deputy commissioner and has offered free quality mentorship to UPSC aspirants, drawing upon his ten years of experience to create customised and productive curriculum. Through a free mentorship programme, he integrates tailored educational materials, psychological principles, visual learning techniques, and a strong emphasis on mental well-being into his teaching skills granting aspirants a chance to learn from his expertise.

What is the second step to write a ‘good essay’ and techniques to achieve it?

Once you have deconstructed the essay topic into its core themes and have understood its essence, the next step is to brainstorm and create the content required for writing the essay.

Needless to say, ideation and brainstorming should be done in the pre-writing stage before you put pen to paper and write the actual essay.

Here is what all to consider while doing so:

Festive offer

1. Everyone has a few content ideas about an essay topic, but this does not mean that those ideas will be enough. There are times when we miss critical dimensions of an essay.

For instance, consider a recently asked essay topic:

Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.

While this essay topic can be written about in a generic sense but is perhaps not ideal unless Indian poets who raised awareness about British oppression during the Indian National Movement are mentioned.

2. Ideation and brainstorming are not only about examples and anecdotes, they form the basis of arguments and counter-arguments that form the most substantive part of the essay and should therefore be done systematically.

3. Systematic ideation helps organise your thoughts which later aids in creating superior structure and adds flow to your writing.

What follows are techniques and strategies to brainstorm and ideate most systematically and comprehensively as possible.

12 QC technique

As the title suggests, these questions are 12 Question based clues (12 QC) that lead you to the important content ideas about a topic.

The 12QC is designed to force you to think widely about any topic by stimulating your knowledge networks in a structured way.

1. Where have you heard or read about the core concept of the essay before?

2. What is the importance of the concept for human beings?

3. Is the word made up of smaller words? What do they mean?

4. What is the opposite of the word?

5. What do you already know about it?

6. Is there an Ethical question or debate associated with it? What could it be?

7. What is the pessimistic side of the word? Can you use the word in a sentence to express something negative and depressing?

8. What happened in the past which is a good example of it?

9. Who does it affect? Why should anyone care about it?

10. Can you Think of an Indian example associated with it?

11. Is there something happening in the world right now which is an example of it?

12. What is the optimistic side? Can you use the word in a sentence to express something positive and hopeful?

Simply ask the 12 questions listed below about the core themes in the essay topic (Refer to Deconstruction – the first step article ) and write down one or two words which come to your mind as possible answers to the questions.

Here are some things to remember before putting this technique into practice:

– Please note that this exercise should be done for each of the main themes of an essay topic.

– Consider the theme in isolation while ideating, ignoring the essay topic for the time being.

– There may be more than 1 core theme in an essay topic.

–  Not every single question in the list needs to be answered. Remember that the questions are to stimulate thinking to generate ideas from what you already know. It’s not a quiz.

–  Not all ideas you generate need to be included in the essay.

The Essay Exercise

The 12 QC technique above may help you in brainstorming after deconstruction. Here is an exercise to put this into practice:

National reserves, Project Tiger, Forest Cover Indian Economy, World Trade, GDP
Subsistence for tribes, environmental diversity, economic value, carbon banks, landslides, mudslides, natural disasters Employment, human capital, growth, standard of living
Economic + excellence
Desert, arid, lifeless Economic mismanagement/disaster
Amazon rainforests, mangroves Scandinavian countries, Bhutan (Gross Happiness Index)
Environmental protection, engendered species, forest fires Inequality, Materialism, Unregulated Capitalism, Erosion of human values
Species extinction, endangered species , tax-evasion, black money, unregulated crypto currencies
Forest fires, forest covers, species extinction India’s economic growth forecast, one of the worlds largest economies.
Critical ecosystem for species, Recycle nutrient Subsistence for all, governments get tax, poor elevated out of poverty
Project Tiger, Forest department, Sandalwood smuggling, declaration of national parks UPI, Micro-finance, PSUs, Start-ups unicorns
Heat waves, forest fires, global warming, Amazon Green economy, India becoming manufacturing hub, Start up economy, gig economy.
Forest cover recently increased in India , Developed countries standard of living.

Important points to note:

1. Don’t worry about a bit of repetition. If a word is being repeated, it is probably central to the topic you are brainstorming about.

2. Your ideas and examples are your own and will be different from those of others. The only important thing is how well you use them to strengthen your arguments in your essay-answers.

3. You can also disagree with points mentioned in these articles and think of other ones. The only thing to take care of is to give reasons and examples for your opinions in the essay because that is what will fetch you a good score at the end of the day.
