The Doctor of Nursing Practice DNP project represents the culmination of your doctoral studies and an opportunity for you to translate your acquired knowledge into practice. It is also the epitome of the practice-focused DNP and an essential part of the integrative practice experience. Preparing your DNP project is an exciting time, as it allows you to lay the groundwork for future scholarship while at the same time giving you a chance to make a potentially meaningful contribution to improving nursing practice and patient outcomes.

In a whitepaper published in August 2015 entitled The Doctor of Nursing Practice: Current Issues and Clarifying Recommendations , the AACN recommended that the DNP Project be referred to simply as the “DNP Project” as a way to distinguish it from final projects in other types of graduate programs. While the term DNP Project is still commonly used, it’s worth noting that schools and professional organizations are in the process of uniformly adopting the term “DNP Project.”

Here’s what you’ll want to know:

What is a DNP Project?

A DNP project is the umbrella term used to describe a scholarly project with the express purpose of translating evidence into practice. You may also hear it referred to as a final or research DNP project. Your DNP project will reflect your specialization/area of interest, allowing you to delve deep and create a project focused on clinical practice . You will use your DNP project to demonstrate mastery of your advanced nursing specialty.

Fortunately, given the wide breadth of clinical nursing practice, your choices for a DNP project are nearly limitless.

For example, your DNP project may be a practice portfolio that explores the impact or outcomes of nursing practice, or it may be a practice change initiative represented by a program evaluation. It may be a quality improvement project, a consulting project, or the evaluation of a new practice model. It may be a practice topic dissemination, a systemic review, or a manuscript submitted for publication—and that’s just to start.

Although DNP projects may take on various forms, depending on your college/university’s requirements and your area of advanced nursing practice, all DNP projects have three things in common: They all include planning, implementation, and evaluation components.

These components reflect the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) DNP Essentials, which states that a DNP project should be able to successfully integrate some or all of the following into practice:

  • Focus on a change that impacts healthcare outcomes through either direct or indirect care
  • Have a systems (micro-, meso-, or macro-level) or population/aggregate focus
  • Implement the appropriate area of practice
  • Include a plan for sustainability (e.g., financial, systems, or political realities)
  • Include an evaluation of processes and/or outcomes

All projects should be designed so that processes/outcomes can be evaluated to guide practice and policy, and all should provide a foundation for future practice scholarship.

What is the Purpose of the DNP Project?

The goal of the DNP project is to inform the methods you will use to deliver care and educate others in your chosen population/community. You will use the DNP project to demonstrate your ability to lead and practice at the highest level of clinical nursing practice.

You will be asked to integrate a number of skills into your final project:

  • Expertise in reflective practice
  • Expertise in your area of interest
  • Independent practice inquiry (identifying existing problems/needs in nursing practice and/or healthcare systems)
  • The ability to evaluate, translate, and use research and evidence to improve health and quality of care outcomes
  • Organizational and systems leadership skills (developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions to improve outcomes for diverse populations and/or communities)
  • Knowledge of advanced healthcare policy, ethics, and law to develop a population-based program based on the best available and current evidence

This is your time to shine, so don’t let the task of choosing a DNP project stress you out.

Using your area of clinical expertise as a springboard, develop your project using an evidence-based process:

  • Formulate a well-developed question: Describe an innovation or clinical inquiry; identify a problem/issue
  • Review the literature to identify evidence-based resources that answer your question: Apply the best evidence from literature
  • Assess the validity of your resources using evidence: Collect data using standard and acceptable methods/tools
  • Apply that evidence: Define outcomes to be measured upon implementation
  • Implement outcomes and/or analyze results: Re-evaluate the application and identify areas for improvement

An example of how one DNP student followed this 5-step evidence-based process to develop a change project with the goal of increasing vaccination among healthcare personnel working in a college:

Step 1. A change project was initiated to increase influenza vaccination among healthcare personnel at a college

Step 2. Barriers to vaccination as well as factors that would help facilitate vaccination were identified using a pre-intervention questionnaire survey

Step 3. Interventions were planned based on the findings of the pre-intervention questionnaire survey

Step 4. Interventions were implemented

Step 5. The effectiveness of the interventions was assessed through a post-intervention survey

An example of how one DNP student followed this 5-step evidence-based process to develop a quality improvement project with the goal of reducing delays in treatment for patients with hand trauma:

Step 1. A quality improvement project was initiated to avoid delays in care for patients with hand trauma

Step 2. Over 2,000 consultations and notes from emergency room and urgent care departments were reviewed to assess adherence to guidelines for treating hand trauma

Step 3. Factors associated with a lack of adherence to treatment guidelines were identified

Step 5. Outcomes were assessed

Questions to Ask

One of the best ways to ensure your DNP project accomplishes your objectives is to ask yourself questions to make sure the project meets the required standards:

  • Does my project focus on individuals, communities, populations, and/or systems?
  • What problems/issues will my project address?
  • Is my DNP project grounded in clinical practice? Will it solve problems or directly inform my practice?
  • Will my project demonstrate mastery of DNP competencies achieved through my doctoral education?
  • Is my project supported by evidence provided through existing literature?
  • Does my project address outcomes associated with patients and healthcare?
  • Does my project provide a foundation for future scholarship in nursing?
  • Executive summary of the project
  • Introduction to the project
  • Description of the problem, how it is defined, and the clinical setting/environment and target environment
  • Data supporting the existence of the problem
  • Description of the creative approach to resolving the problem

The steps required to complete a DNP project will also vary somewhat from one program to the next. Generally speaking, DNP projects include the following stages:

  • Student identifies a focus area for the DNP project.
  • A Capstone Chairperson is selected based on mutual agreement of the student and faculty member and the clinical/scholarly interests and area of expertise of the faculty member. Note: Careful selection of a capstone chairperson is important, as the student and chairperson will develop a plan of study and work closely throughout the process .
  • Student selects a Capstone Committee (usually includes at least three faculty members, one of whom is the Capstone Chairperson).
  • Student earns eligibility to defend the capstone proposal (the proposal must be formally approved by all Committee members).
  • Student works with Capstone Chairperson to develop the proposal, using the Committee in an advisory capacity, as needed.
  • Student prepares and distributes the proposal defense to the Committee members.
  • Student arranges a meeting of the Committee to discuss the proposal and to rule on its acceptability (Committee members ensure the proposal’s feasibility, clinical relevance, and quality.).
  • Upon acceptance of the proposal, the student begins the process of implementing the DNP project (must receive administrative approval for all steps of the project).
  • Student schedules the final defense of the DNP project upon completing the written project and upon getting approval from the Capstone Chairperson.
  • Student distributes the final copy to the Committee members and prepares for the oral defense of the DNP project.
  • Committee members critique the project, identify any changes or additional work to be done, and determine the outcome of the DNP project defense.

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Dnp projects.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students create a DNP project at the culmination of study. Students’ projects must:

Enhance health outcomes, practice outcomes, or policy outcomes

Evaluate health care outcomes, practice outcomes, or policy outcomes

Reflect a culmination of practice inquiry

Engage in new partnerships

Reflect a translation of evidence into practice

The DNP program prepares students to bridge the gap between new science and integration into practice. At the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, graduates of our DNP program have created projects that implement research, plans, and practices that advance our profession and improve health outcomes. DNP Student Projects

A hallmark of the DNP-prepared nurse is the ability to utilize the concept of practice inquiry to translate meaningful health research into practice. Students learn this process through the completion of a final DNP project. Students investigate an area of nursing practice, the health care delivery system, or a health care policy issue to develop a project meaningful to the organization as well as one that meets the scope of doctoral level work. DNP projects may take the form of quality improvement initiatives, practice change programs, program evaluation or translating evidence into practice. See examples of DNP student projects below.

Washington State University acknowledges that its locations statewide are on the homelands of Native peoples, who have lived in this region from time immemorial. Currently, there are 42 tribes, 35 of which are federally recognized that share traditional homelands and waterways in what is now Washington State. Some of these are nations and confederacies that represents multiple tribes and bands. The University expresses its deepest respect for and gratitude towards these original and current caretakers of the region. As an academic community, we acknowledge our responsibility to establish and maintain relationships with these tribes and Native peoples, in support of tribal sovereignty and the inclusion of their voices in teaching, research and programming. Washington State University established the  Office of Tribal Relations  and  Native American Programs  to guide us in our relationship with tribes and service to Native American students and communities. We also pledge that these relationships will consist of mutual trust, respect, and reciprocity.

The DNP Scholarly Project requires students to identify a gap in healthcare that needs change to improve health outcomes. This may be in their workplace or in the community. Once this gap is identified, students will do a systematic review to determine a solution. The last steps of the DNP scholarly project requires students to implement and evaluate the plan’s effectiveness. The course of study in the DNP program builds towards this goal, both to help students identify and refine their original ideas and to build the academic tools necessary to engage their ideas with rigor and scholarship. Completion of this program earns the Doctor of Nursing Practice and prepares graduates to analyze systems, identify problems and apply evidence based solutions to improve the outcomes of the people for whom they provide care. The findings will be presented to the academic community prior to graduation.

This page will offer some guidance on formatting your Scholarly Project. The sooner you establish consistent formatting in your documents, the less work you will have to do in preparing the final product -- you will be able to focus on content, the most important part! Please review the Order of Elements , and refer to the suggestions below, from the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

  • Resources for Doctoral Students Locate the most up-to-date requirements for your program, including guiding documents, fillable forms, and exemplar DNP Scholarly Project.

Structure and formatting specifically for dissertations and theses is not provided by APA, as the disciplines that use this style are quite varied and may require adherence to other, more specific guidelines established by relevant professional associations. Thus, initial guidelines for structure should come from your DNP Handbook. As stated on page 10 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition:

" Students should follow the guidelines and requirements developed by their instructors, departments and/or academic institutions when writing papers, including dissertations and theses; these guidelines and requirements may entail adaptations of or additions to the APA Style guidelines described in the manual. We encourage writers, instructors, departments, and academic institutions using APA Style outside of the journal publication context to adapt APA Style to fit their needs."

Copyright of Materials Used in Your Dissertation

Increasingly, dissertation writers are using images and media from other sources in their dissertations. Understanding copyright rules is an important competency for scholarly communication in the 21st century. Please note that the usual Fair Use guidelines for using other people’s photographs, artwork, infographics, etc. for educational use – say in a classroom paper or an unpublished PowerPoint presentation – do not apply to dissertations because dissertations are published works.

It is not enough to cite the source of media you did not create; you need to have permission to use anything that is not in the public domain. You are responsible for obtaining copyright clearance for all non-public domain material used in your dissertation. In general, anything created after 1923, including media found on the Internet, is still in copyright. Just because copyright has already been violated elsewhere in the use of an item does not give you permission to violate copyright by putting it in your dissertation; for example, an image may circulate on social media without attribution, but scholarly publications are held to a much higher standard.

If you use materials created by others - for example, images, tables, etc. -- in your dissertation, you will be required to file copyright clearance information with ProQuest which proves you have permission to use those materials.

Copyright of Your Dissertation

As the creator of a work, you automatically own the copyright of your dissertation. Submitting your dissertation to ProQuest does not affect that.

When you publish with ProQuest, you can choose either the Traditional Publishing Agreement or Open Access. The Traditional Publishing Agreement is non-exclusive, which means you can also publish your dissertation elsewhere. Under this agreement, your dissertation will be accessible only to people in the Salve Regina community logged in on the library's website. Users at other institutions will only be able to see your abstract, and can request a copy of the dissertation via interlibrary loan. If they are not affiliated with another institution, they can buy a copy from ProQuest.

Open Access makes your dissertation available to anyone who finds it, whether through ProQuest, a web search, etc. ProQuest charges a $95 fee for this service (subject to change). If you wish to make your dissertation available Open Access, you can do so through Salve Regina's institutional repository, Digital Commons , for free. To do so, select the Traditional Publishing Agreement with ProQuest and then upload your same PDF file here . Your Open Access dissertation will appear in this collection and you will receive reports from Digital Commons about the usage statistics of your work. If you submit your dissertation to Digital Commons for Open Access, you still must submit to ProQuest, and the library recommends Digital Commons submission as the last step. Providing Open Access to your dissertation is not the same as putting it in the public domain, so you are not giving up any of your rights as author, just maximizing your readership.

Through ProQuest, you have the option of asking ProQuest to file for US copyright for your dissertation. There is a fee associated with this, usually $55 (subject to change). You are not required to register for copyright. Regardless of whether you register copyright, you can still publish via the Traditional Publishing Agreement, ProQuest's Open Access, or through Digital Commons.

You must submit your dissertation to ProQuest by May 1 for May graduates, August 1 for August graduates, and December 1 for December graduates.

Please note that if you have images in your dissertation that are not in the public domain, you will need to upload permissions documentation along with your dissertation. Please gather these documents (in pdf format) prior to sitting down to submit.

Before you submit you will also need to embed your fonts in Word and convert your dissertation document to an archival format, PDF/A-1b. This process ensures your document will be accessible across operating systems and software through time. If you do not have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro, then the Librarian will need to complete these steps for you. If you have access to the software and would like to convert your document on your own, the instructions are as follows:

1. In Word:

Embedding Fonts

  • In Microsoft Word, go to  File > Options .
  • In the Options box, select the  Save  option in the left-hand menu.
  • At the bottom of the right-hand menu, under “ Preserve fidelity when sharing this document ,” there are two options. Check “ embed fonts in this document .” Make sure the two options below this checkbox  are not checked .
  • Save the document.

Save As PDF

  • Go to  File > Save As.
  • From the  Save As  type drop-down menu, select PDF.

2. In Adobe Acrobat Pro :

  • Open the PDF you just created with embedded fonts.
  • If you don’t have the Print Production tool menu on the right-hand side, select the  Customize  drop-down menu above it, click  Create New Tool Set , and create a tool set which includes the Print Production tool menu.
  • Expand the  PDF/A Compliance  menu.
  • Select  Convert to PDF/A-1b .
  • Click  Analyze and Fix .

  3. Submitting to ProQuest

  • Once you have a PDF in archival format with embedded fonts, you will submit your dissertation through the ProQuest UMI Electronic Theses and Dissertations website. Go to https://etdadmin.com/cgi-bin/home , create an account, and complete the guided submission process.
  • Setting an embargo (for doctoral candidates who plan to publish their work through publishers-- please see Proquest's guide to decision making on embargos .)
  • Search engine optimization (recommended)
  • Setting metadata – what keywords or search terms will allow future researchers to find your work?
  • Traditional vs. Open Access publishing – Select Traditional Publishing. Students can publish Open Access for free via the Salve Regina University institutional repository, Digital Commons: https://digitalcommons.salve.edu/phd_dissertations/ . ProQuest charges $95 for its service, which it offers for students whose institutions do not have repositories. Publishing in Digital Commons is allowed under ProQuest’s Traditional Publishing agreement.
  • Registering for U. S. Copyright - This is not required, as you will own copyright of your dissertation regardless. The decision to register is up to you.
  • Ordering personal copies (students do not need to order copies for the library or archives)
  • Uploading the dissertation and any supplemental files. The upload limit is 1000 MB; most dissertations are under 10 MB.  ProQuest supports to inclusion of digital files, such as datasets or multimedia. These files will need to be described in your abstract.
  • Uploading copyright permissions documents. These must be submitted for any non-public domain materials used in the dissertation that were not created by the dissertation writer. This includes, among many other things, images found on the Internet.

Important reminders

  • You must submit your completed signature page to the PhD program before submitting your dissertation. The signature page will  not  be scanned into the digital copy of your dissertation in order to minimize the presence of faculty signatures online.
  • You do  not  need to print a hard copy of your dissertation – ProQuest will send the library a bound copy. This will appear on your final invoice but you will not be charged for it.
  • ProQuest UMI ETD provides a series of guides on publication and copyright considerations for dissertation publishing. You are encouraged to review these guidelines before submitting your dissertation.
  • If media (video, audio, computer programs, and/or significant number of images) needs to be included with the dissertation, please be sure to pay attention to the requirements for supplemental files.
  • If the dissertation includes equations, please note that the Microsoft Word Equation Editor should  not  be used. Instead, use italic Times New Roman font and Symbol font along with superscripts and subscripts to create equations.
  • Increasingly, dissertation writers are using images and media in their dissertations. The usual Fair Use guidelines for using other people’s creations (photographs, artwork, infographics, etc.) for educational use do not apply to dissertations because they are published. It is not enough to cite the source of media you did not create.  Students are responsible for obtaining copyright clearance for all non-public domain media used in their dissertations .
  • The library will not help revise your dissertation submission once the deadline has passed (May 1st, August 1st, or December 1st, depending). If you notice an error you wish to change in your dissertation after it has been delivered to ProQuest, you must contact ProQuest customer service to change the document. There will be a fee.
  • ProQuest resources and guidelines These documents provides guidance the submission process. This will help with the "decision points" you will come to during submission.
  • Submitting your dissertation to ProQuest Resource explaining digital preservation, metadata, and publishing options.

Hi everyone!

I'm still trying to understand the concept of how to implement a DNP project. If my project were about OR traffic and surgical site infections, would I be conducting original research? Or, would I be researching the literature that is already available regarding the subject and making recommendations at my clinical site? I am just beginning a Master's program but have been looking into continuing my education in the future.

Hi everyone! I'm still trying to understand the concept of how to implement a DNP project. If my project were about OR traffic and surgical site infections, would I be conducting original research? Or, would I be researching the literature that is already available regarding the subject and making recommendations at my clinical site? It could be either one. You would have to start with a thorough review of the literature for original research and/or to make recommendations based on the literature.

The easiest way IMO to do this would be to review the literature. Then do a small QI project at your place of work to see if the trend in the literature was consistent with your place of work, and then after that you could make recommendations at work based on the current literature and make it applicable to your work settings.

Since it would be a QI project at work you wouldn't need any IRB approval unless you later decided to publish the results.
