Teachers' Essay

It’s all about teachers thought, experiences and observations of daily school life.

  • Teachers Play the Role of Second Parents

Some people believe that the teachers’ primary role is to teach children to behave and to judge what is right and wrong. But on the other hand, teachers play the role of second parents to the pupils. It is they who correct the pupils if something went wrong like what they do on their own children. The teachers also play significant role in shaping the life of the pupils under their care.

Talking to a pupil can help a teacher understand a pupil’s life situation better. Some of them are from a broken family, while others don’t have parents and live with immediate relatives. Sometimes they are experiencing problems and difficulties in school and the teacher as a second parent will decide to have a home visit to somehow solve the problem. Home visitation also helps teachers to understand why pupils behave in different ways. There are circumstances that some pupils are voluntarily sharing their problem at home to their teacher. Teacher as a second parent will support their pupils by giving proper guidance. Once a pupil feels that the teacher appreciates what they do, they will trust their teacher more. Pupils spend quality time in school than in home. We need to make pupils to feel that they are safe enough and never let fear be your image but love. In return, pupils should give respect to their teachers through disciplined behavior and putting in good efforts in their studies; pupils can attain success in their life and also make their parents and teachers proud of their success.

Teachers : The second parent in child’s life

' src=

Students who are loved at home, come to school to learn , students who aren’t, come to school to be loved.  Nicholas A ferrari.

Teachers are like second parents to their kids; they have a big impact on their life. Students who experience affection and support at home are more motivated to learn and develop in the classroom. However, for some who might not experience the same level of affection at home, school becomes a place where they go to get that support and care. It emphasises how crucial it is to provide a caring and encouraging environment for each and every student. The significant influence that educators can have on the lives of their students is encapsulated in the words of Nicholas A. Ferrari.

A teacher and student have a relationship that extends beyond the classroom, fostering an environment where learning, development, and success are possible.

1. Nurturing Support System: Teachers provide not only academic guidance but also emotional support, creating a safe space for students to express themselves and seek guidance. This nurturing environment fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance, crucial for a child’s development.

2. Mentorship and Guidance: Like parents, teachers offer mentorship and guidance, helping students navigate challenges, set goals, and realize their potential. The guidance provided by teachers goes a long way in shaping the character and future of their students.

3. Building Trust and Connection: The strong bond between a teacher and a student is built on trust, respect, and understanding. Students often turn to their favorite teachers to share their concerns, seek advice, and find comfort in knowing that they are accepted and supported.

4. Impact on Students’ Lives: The influence of a caring and dedicated teacher extends far beyond the classroom. Teachers who show love, compassion, and dedication leave a lasting impact on their students, instilling values, inspiring dreams, and shaping future leaders.

Why teachers are our ‘second parents’

essay on teachers are our second parents

Her flawless, golden brown complexion was an unlikely canvas for an almost expressionless face. Large-rimmed glasses framed unnerving brown eyes.

It was the ’80s, the advent of power dressing. Appearing much taller than her real height of five feet and five inches, she wore classic, stylish outfits with larger-than-life shoulder pads and demanded our full respect.

Her knowledge of English literature was impeccable. The manner of speaking was confident and solid. No one wanted to raise her hands to answer her question for fear of making a mistake. With her, you were either right or wrong, no excuses.

When she walked down the hallway, the students moved aside one by one, like the parting of the Red Sea. And as she passed, she would give you that familiar glare as if telling you, “Oh, you better do well in my class.” She was every inch intimidating.

THE AUTHOR with her college professor Lou Leonardia

Ms Lou Leonardia was my college professor. At the time, when the term “terror” was used to describe a teacher, she was one, and she knew it. Yet, she never called us names, used foul language or punished us in any physical way. She maintained her good breeding, and valued dignity and pride of work.

I felt threatened at first, but later on was so challenged that whenever she asked a question, I would readily raise my hand and see how she would react. I knew that if I was able to manage it, I would have seen beyond that daunting facade and paid more attention to the lesson.

Unforgettable

She became a most unforgettable teacher, and her subject became my favorite. Some might find it odd that the professor most students found the hardest to crack is the one who would be the most memorable, but I am sure I’m not alone in that.

I now have two teenage sons. And whenever we talk about their school and studies, there are a few times they ask why some teachers are so difficult and seem to love giving them a hard time. I would answer, “Your teacher is just challenging you, because she knows you can be better.” They reply, “You’re just saying that because you’re a teacher, too.”

“Exactly, but that doesn’t mean I’m on their side. I’m on your side, too. Learning can be hard because it puts new ideas in your brain. And since your brain is still developing, it needs these new ideas to be stronger. That, my loves, is why you’re in school. We also have to understand why a teacher chooses to be strict or lenient. But in the end, difficult teacher or not, it will always depend on you. Would you rather know nothing, or know much more?”

One of them shook his head and said, “But we all did our best and he still wasn’t happy with what we presented. It’s so frustrating.”

“Are you frustrated with the teacher or what you are learning? Think about it, because if you’re frustrated with your teacher, no one wins. Your teacher will just be there for some time, but the lessons you will learn are like building blocks for your future.

“Teachers are there to be instruments for your learning, too. And the best teachers look past what is written in textbooks. They go as far as thinking about how your learning today can affect your future. They also see how you deal with pressure, express yourself verbally, evaluate situations, approach problems, accept mistakes and find solutions.

“If you look at it, these are things you have to learn in real life. Plus the fact that in your case, can you imagine them being in a roomful of teenagers to teach?”

Mark and I laughed because he got the point, and replied, “So that’s why I see them like second parents.”

I smiled and said, “Yes, be thankful for having them. Not everyone can be teachers; it’s really a tough job, you know. And they will always hope for the best for you.”

Teachers, too, are challenged to make students comprehend the value of what they are receiving, since they are tasked with developing so many young minds. But they love their jobs, and although they know that the service they give the youth might be left unnoticed, they find fulfillment in the knowledge that somehow they have been part of their lives, and had learned much, too, along the way.

In my professor’s case, she knew that we could deliver more than what we thought we could. There are many approaches to teaching, and so Ma’am Lou chose to play the part of the villain who brought out the hero in all of us. And she never gave up.

But then again, we choose whether we want to be heroes or bystanders. In any case, teachers are supposed to challenge you, as much as life does. If everything was easy, you would have learned nothing.

To all teachers, I salute you. Your service to our children is as valuable as life itself. Besides us parents, you are role models for our children.

I hope that we can also remind our sons and daughters to thank you, because no matter what behavior you have shown them, be it kindness, thoughtfulness, understanding, and even strictness, you have in one way or another have given them a taste of the kind of people they will meet in their lifetime.

As responsible adults, we will not forget that we are also on our own journeys. In our world full of distractions, which the vulnerable minds of our youth are exposed to, let us see it fit to approach them in a manner that will welcome and inspire, rather than alienate them from the priceless gift of education.

From my own experience, I understand that balancing our personal and professional lives does test us. But it is our test, not theirs. And as we empower the youth to become true and honorable leaders in the future, we, too, enable ourselves to become more than just the ordinary people these children encounter in their lives—just like Ma’am Lou.

Importance of Teachers in Our Lives

Teachers are those who make children knowledgeable and cultured. A teacher is a beautiful gift given by god because god is a creator of the whole world and a teacher is a creator of a whole nation. A teacher is such an important creature in the life of a student, who through his knowledge, patience and love give a strong shape to a student’s whole life.

A teacher shares academic knowledge, ethical values and assimilates moral values that help us shape our personality as better human beings. They represent an open book and try to share their life experience for a better tomorrow. A teacher has many qualities, they are efficient in their student’s life and success in every aspect. A teacher is very intelligent. They know how the mind of students gets concentrated in studies.

During teaching, a teacher uses creativity so that students can concentrate on their studies. They are a repository of knowledge and have the patience and confidence to take responsibility for the future of the student. They only want to see their students successful and happy. Teachers are very prestigious people in the society, who through their magic of education, take the responsibilities of raising the lifestyle and mind level of the common people.

Parents expect a lot from teachers. Teachers are the second parents who help the students balance their lives and spend the maximum childhood time. Just as our parents influence our childhood years, our teachers help shape us into the people we want to become when we grow up, having a huge impact on our lives. Students have complete faith in their teachers. In younger years, Students used to listen to their teachers more than anyone else as they used to spend more time with them than anyone else.

The role of the teacher varies from class to game. A teacher is an important creature in everyone’s life who appears to do different things in our life. They are the creator of a wonderful future for our nation.

Importance of a Teacher

A teacher has an important place not only in student life but also in every phase of life. They have all qualities which they distribute in their students. They know that not everyone has the same ability to receive, so a teacher observes all the abilities of each of their students and in the same way, they teach children. A teacher is a great listener of knowledge, prosperity, and light, from which we can benefit greatly throughout our life. Every teacher helps their students in choosing their path. Teachers teach their students how to respect elders. They tell their students the difference between respect and insult and many more. A teacher equips his/her student with the knowledge, skills, and positive behavior honored which the student never feels lost. The teacher makes them aware of how to use time and the restriction of time. A good teacher makes a good impression on his students. When any student makes a mistake, the teacher teaches them a lesson and also makes them realize their mistake. They teach us to wear clean clothes, eat healthy food, stay away from the wrong food, take care of parents, treat others well, and help us in understanding the importance of completing work.

A teacher has many qualities which hold a special place in every student’s life. Teachers embrace various roles they are our friends when we get sad, our parents when we are hurt, and always good advisers. Teachers reward their students for their good work while sometimes punishing them for realizing the mistake to understand that this is not right for their lives.

Children’s future and present both are made by the teacher. He also enhances a good society by creating a good student throughout his life. Only a teacher knows what kind of association his student lives in and what kind of association he holds.

Teachers are great role models. The teachers influence students’ decidedness. For example, India’s most respectable President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, achieved his position as a great aerospace engineer because of his teacher. Mr. Siva Subramania Iyer’s teachings on how birds fly influenced Dr. Kalam’s contribution to society.

Not only in the education field, but there are also numerous examples in sports too, where teachers played a vital role in shaping the career of the athletes. A notable example is batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who credits his coach and teacher, Mr. Ramakant Achrekar, for success. Like this, there are numerous examples in various fields of dance, music, acting, arts, science where teachers act as a pivotal role in shaping the life of their disciples.

Relation of Student and the Teacher

The relationship between the teacher and the student was very sacred in ancient times as education was so perfect. There are so many stories written in our scriptures that revolve around student and teacher relationships. Out of all those, the supreme sacrifice made by Eklavya is of prime importance and showcases a student’s dedication towards his teacher.

Alas, This relation is lacking in recent times. Nowadays, it is considered a mere profession. It has become a business or source of income compared to earlier days where it was considered a noble profession. We should be conscious enough not to stain this noble profession and should not create an example that lifts people’s trust in teachers.

In India, we gave great importance to the teacher. According to the Indian concept, the teacher is the spiritual and intellectual father of the teacher. No education is possible without the help of the teacher. He is regarded as the “Guru” – a speculator, a companion, and a guide.

In ancient India, the transmission of knowledge was oral, and the teacher was the sole custodian of knowledge. The relationship between the teacher and the students was amiable and deep in ancient times.

Hard Work is the Key to be a Teacher

It takes a lot of hard work to be a good teacher. First of all, always respect the elders and also obey them. Concentration should be increased toward society and education. To be a good teacher, one has a sense of unity in the heart, does not discriminate against anyone, everyone should be seen with a glance. They always encourage students, they never criticize their students. Develops a good interpersonal relationship with a student. One should always tell good things to their younger ones and always treat the classmate well, always take inspiration from the teacher.

The teacher has a huge contribution to our life. No one can developmentally, socially, and intellectually in their life without a teacher. Many teachers slap students, many give punishment but in the end, the teacher is never bad. It only depends on the way they teach, which is different for everyone and this creates a different image in the student’s mind. They do whatever just to make our future bright.

Every year, some teachers get honored. Teachers’ day is celebrated every year on 5 September, in memory of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, India’s second President. India is a home ground of some great teachers like Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Premchand, Swami Vivekanand, who have given some great lessons of life which are still in trend. On this day a special ceremony takes place in the school, in which students participate enthusiastically. A nation always honors all those teachers who help in eradicating ignorance of darkness. A teacher is an ocean of knowledge, we should keep acquiring knowledge on a subject for as long as possible.

A good teacher can make a lasting impression on their students and can influence them in many ways. They can inspire their students to be lifelong learners and instill in them a love for learning. A good teacher can also motivate their students to achieve their goals and reach their potential.

Teachers Day is a special day to honour and show appreciation for teachers. It is an opportunity for us to express our gratitude towards them for their dedication and commitment towards education. On this day, we should take some time out to thank them for everything they have done for us. We should also pledge to do our best and make them proud.

Meaning of Teachers Day

Teachers day is celebrated to commemorate the contribution of teachers in our society. It is celebrated on 5th October every year in India. On this day, we express our gratitude and appreciation for our teachers who have nurturing us and helped us to grow and succeed in life. Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping our future and it is due to their efforts that we are able to lead successful lives.

The concept of teachers day began in the late 19th century when various countries were celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of their great personalities. In India, the first proposal to celebrate teachers day was made by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned scholar and philosopher. He believed that teachers should be revered and respected for their valuable contribution in society. His vision was finally realized when 5th October was declared as national teachers day in 1962.

Since then, each year on 5th October, we celebrate Teachers Day with great fervor and enthusiasm across the country. Various events and programs are organized on this day to honor our teachers. Students take part in these events and express their love and gratitude towards their mentors. Flowers, cards, and gifts are also given to them as a token of appreciation.

On this special day, let us remember all the selfless efforts of our teachers who have helped us to become what we are today!

Teachers are vital members of society, and they play a crucial role in shaping the future of our world.

– Decorate the school premises and classrooms with banners, posters and balloons.

– Hold cultural programmes and talent shows where students can perform for their teachers.

– Serve refreshments to all the teachers after the programme.

– Give gifts to teachers to show your appreciation for their efforts.

Reasons Why We Should Respect Our Teacher

Teachers are our second parents. They take care of us when we are in school and teach us everything we need to know. They help shaping our future and make us better people. There are many reasons why we should respect them.

The first reason is that they have a lot of knowledge. They have studied for many years and know a lot about the world and different subjects. They can help us understand things that we don’t know and help us learn new things.

The second reason is that they are always there for us. They help us when we need it and are always willing to lend a helping hand. They are also patient with us when we make mistakes and help us learn from them.

The third reason is that they care about us. They want us to succeed in life and reach our potential. They believe in us even when we don’t believe in ourselves. They push us to be better people and do our best in everything we do.

So, these are some of the reasons why we should respect our teachers. We should be thankful for everything they do for us and treat them with the same respect that they treat us with.

Benefits of Celebrating Teacher’s Day

Reflection on the Role of a Teacher

As a teacher, you have the ability to shape the minds of your students and help them grow into responsible adults. On Teachers Day, take some time to reflect on your role as a teacher and how you can make a positive impact on your students’ lives.

Think about what makes a great teacher. What qualities do you possess that help you connect with your students and foster their love of learning? Use these qualities to guide your reflections on your own teaching practice.

Think about how you can use your role as a teacher to make a difference in the world. How can you inspire your students to be global citizens and make positive change in their communities?

Finally, take some time to reflect on your personal goals for your teaching career. What do you hope to achieve in your classroom? How can you continue to grow as a teacher and have a positive impact on your students’ lives?

Teachers Day is a day of appreciation and recognition for the hard work, dedication and commitment of our teachers. By celebrating Teacher’s Day every year, we acknowledge their efforts in moulding young minds into valuable citizens who will shape this world to be better than it was before. Without them, there would be no one to guide us through life’s toughest obstacles and teach us the value of true knowledge. Let us take a moment to thank all our teachers for being such an integral part of our lives!

Role of parents and teachers in a child’s life

Pooja0001

School, teachers and parents play vital role in holistic development of the child. Parents are the first mentor of the child and the teacher is the second. Both have an immense contribution and responsibility in shaping child’s personality.

Role of parents : Parents are the child’s first role model. Children behave, react and imitate same as their parents. Parents play important role in encouraging and motivating their kids to learn. Good parental support helps child to be positive, healthy and good life long learner. Children acquire skills at the very early stage of their life if the parents are responsive and understanding.

Role of Teachers : Major challenges for teachers are to nurture children’s learning and give him various experiences to face this challenging world. She molds the child to be a responsible and independent learner. Teacher is the first person from whom child learns his social skills in school. Teachers make him comfortable and guide him the early concepts and developmental skills of life. Open minded , well balanced and a planned teacher has a great power to bring a positive change in the child’s development. As the child grows and develops mastery in different skills, teacher becomes a real guide in nurturing his interest and learning to make him more independent.

Teacher-Parent Relationship – Trust and mutual understanding between parent and teacher is a real secret of child’s happy learning. Support and Cooperativeness from parents towards teacher helps a lot to connect, understand and work towards child. Remarkable positive change is seen in a child if the parents and teacher understand and work hand in hand. A good parent teacher relationship leads child to be positive towards attending school.

Impact of Teachers on a Student’s Life

Growing up, our parents and teachers are the first ones to impact our lives significantly. In fact, in the younger years, students have complete faith in their teachers and they listen to their teachers more than their parents. This shows the significance and impact of a teacher .

essay on teachers are our second parents

When we become older and enter college, teachers become our friends. Some even become our role models. They inspire us to do great things in life. We learn how to be selfless by teachers. Teachers unknowingly also teach very important lessons to a student.

For instance, when a student gets hurt in school, the teacher rushes them to the infirmary for first aid. This makes a student feel secure and that they know a teacher plays the role of a parent in school.

In other words, a teacher does not merely stick to the role of a teacher. They adapt into various roles as and when the need arises. They become our friends when we are sad, they care for us like our parents when we are hurt. Thus, we see how great a teacher impacts a student’s life and shapes it.

IELTS - 'Teachers are the second parents in the school' - RESPONSIBILITY FOR TEACHING

hari11296 2 / 4   Aug 28, 2014   #2 I agree that teachers should show the students some moral values. They are more often than not the only adult supervision in some students' lives. For example, I lived with a single mom who worked all day everyday and didn't have time to talk to me or teach me important values, and the teachers would be the ones I listened to. Although, not all teachers have good morals so it is important for the student to decide based on good judgment which advice is right and which is not.

essay on teachers are our second parents

Teacher as a Second Parent

In the article, “What Teachers Hate about Parents,” Nancy Gibbs states, “But if parents are searching for the perfect teacher, teachers are looking for the ideal parent, a partner but not a pest, engaged but not obsessed, with a sense of perspective and patience. ” I agree with this statement completely. I think parent-teacher partnership is a very big key in the success of children. This article talks about parents wanting their children to have the best of the best, but is it really what is for the best, or what society deems as the “the best” that parents are looking for?

Often times, parents fight for their child to have the best teachers, so they can be the highest achiever in the class, which ultimately Is this Essay helpful? But what these parents don’t seem to understand is what society deems as “best” may not be the greatest for the individual child. At the same time, a child’s teacher spends almost eight hours a day with the child learning his/her different learning styles. I think when it comes to education; a teacher is more knowledgeable with the child’s best interests.

Without paying upfront

But, even though I feel this way, a parent has the right to do and say anything in his/her child’s behalf. I think the best way to accept these issues is to try to maintain a good teacher-parent alliance, and deal with each parent on an individual foundation based on the needs of each parent and their child. Guru : Sishya – The Relationship Beyond Classrooms Guru : Sishya – The Relationship Beyond Classrooms | Introduction This article is an outcome of the survey conducted by the I MBA students of our institute (RLIMS, Madurai) on the student-teacher relationship. The group name of these budding managers is “Aspire”.

The moment we talk about the guru-sishya relationship the flash that comes first is the historical guru Dronacharya and his disciples; Swami Vivekananda and his guru Ramakrishnar; and the list continues… The guru-sishya relationship is a social binding on both the students and the teacher. Either one or the other fails to perform their duty with due diligence the loss is not only for them but also to the society. If a student fails to perform his duties the ultimate loser is himself and his family… but a teacher fails to perform his duty the loss for the big mass of the society.

Objective of the Study * To study the present status of guru-sishya relationship. * To suggest ways and means to improve the relationship better. Limitations Is this Essay helpful? Join OPPapers to read more and access more than 350,000 just like it! GET BETTER GRADES of the Study * The study was restricted only to Management Teachers and Management Students. Summary of Findings – Students’ Viewpoint * Majority of the students suggested that the faculty should share his views on the current affairs and general knowledge aspects to the students. Students also suggested that their faculties should motivate and encourage them, which would help them to improve their mettle. * Few students are much concerned about the syllabus coverage. And few others felt that it should be partly on a self-study basis. * Doubt clarification – yet another key driver inside the classroom. A part of the students are not clarifying their doubts immediately – reason is “Shyness”. The other part of student feels the doubts to be clarified then and there itself. * Students feel that a feedback should be got at the every session to find out their understanding level.

But still few students feel that feedback is not required instead… Parent Is The Best Teacher Topic: Parents are the best teachers. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Parents, obviously, can teach and bring up the children well and be very important teachers in children’s lives. They show their children the first lessons such as how to crawl, stand and speak. Parents; however, are not always the best teachers Firstly, parents, undoubtedly, give birth and take care of children for the whole time. Therefore, parents are the ones who understand children most.

The closer parents and children are, the easier parents can educate their children. They know children’s strong points and weak points. From this, they can orient the suitable way to teach their children. But in reality, they seem not to be the best teachers. There are some parents actually don’t understand their children much because the have a bit time to be close to children. For example, it takes them to be on business trip and do not care anything about their children. Is this Essay helpful? Join OPPapers to read more and access more than 350,000 just like it!

GET BETTER GRADES. In addition, parents sometimes do not pay attention to their children’s desire. Parents seem to separate their children from their mind. For instance, if parents love art, they may try to force the children to love art, too. But what if their children’s true interest is art? Thus, parents and children have some difficulties in solving problems. It’s difficult for parents to become the best teachers. Secondly, parents can give children a lot of knowledge about children’s subjects at school and social knowledge. For example, they can help children master their lessons by reviewing together every day.

They tell children about the good and bad things about the life that helps them feel confident to confront any obstacles. On the other hand, some parents who are not trained with the pedagogic method cannot be the best teachers. To illustrate, parents may easily find out a math solution for children, but they find it hard to elucidate which only teachers probably do. That’s why parents must… Teachers opinion about the responsibility The process of teaching and learning is rooted in student, teacher, and curriculum. Discussions about education are mostly focused on the level of attainment of the desired learning objectives.

When student achievement is low, then some critical factors related to teaching and learning should be closely examined, such as qualities of teachers and school curricula, appropriateness of teaching strategies to students’ developmental levels, and atmosphere and climate of schools related to students learning. Different views and suggestions about increasing students’ academic achievement are discussed publicly. However, the perceptions of teachers as one of the main parts of the teaching and learning system have not publicized enough.

The aim of this study was to examine teachers’ views about the responsibilities of parents, schools, and teachers to enhance students’ academic achievement. Specifically, the following three questions guided this study: 1. What do teachers think of the responsibilities of parents in enhancing students’ academic achievement in schools? 2. What do teachers think of the responsibilities of schools in enhancing students’ academic achievement in schools? 3. What do teachers think of the responsibilities of teachers in enhancing students’ academic achievement in schools?

The family characteristic that is the most powerful predictor of school performance is socioeconomic status. The correlation between socioeconomic status and academic achievement has been found 0. 58 (White, 1982). Some caring parents are very good in creating a home atmosphere that fosters student learning (e. g. , reading to their children, helping them with their homework, encouraging them to go to college, and taking them to the library and some cultural events) (Danielson, 2002). They also communicate their expectations to the children and show a great interest in the schoolwork of their children (Fan & Chen, 2001).

Suggestions: eachers’ views about the responsibilities of parents to enhance student achievement. All of the 148 teachers responded to the first question. Their suggestions were ranked from high to low frequencies as follows. 1. Parents should love, respect, and care about their children. All teachers (148) in this study provided this suggestion. According to the participants, parents should devote special time for their children to participate in some common activities. This will help children develop their self-esteem. Also, parents should have a good communication with their children and listen to them what they say.

This is important to show respect of their views and thoughts. 2. Parents should take responsibility in their children’s education. 120 (82%) teachers in the survey sample indicated this suggestion. Parents should have purposeful and systematic discussion with their children regarding schoolwork. Therefore, parents should encourage their children to complete schoolwork and do homework on time. Television viewing of children should be limited to a moderate amount of time and organized during weekdays according to their children’s study time.

Since the start of this school year, we have been surveying teachers in South Australia about sexist views among students. This is part of our research into how online worlds are shaping Australian schooling.

In May, we reported the first round of our research . We found South Australian teachers were experiencing a rise in sexist and other anti-social views among students, similar to those reported interstate and overseas .

Teachers in our as yet unpublished study spoke of an alarming increase in misogynistic, homophobic, racist, and sexist language and behaviours, mostly by boys and young men targeting girls and young female teachers. This is prompting some women to leave the profession .

A new theme to emerge from our research is bystander inaction. This is when school leaders, other teachers, or parents downplay what is happening or do nothing or little in response.

Between February and May this year, we advertised an anonymous survey on the Teachers of Adelaide Facebook group. This involves teachers from public, private co-ed and single-sex schools.

The survey called for short-answer responses to questions about sexism, racism, homophobia or other anti-social behaviours and language.

We received 160 responses. Almost 80% of the responses were from female teachers, who were mostly from high schools. On top of this, we did ten interviews with teachers who responded, who were willing to talk at further length.

A teenage boy in a blazer and tie writes on a sheet of paper on a desk.

Teachers are not prepared to help

Some female teachers in our study experienced abuse and harassment by students when they were on their own. But it sometimes occurred around other female staff or teachers.

One female teacher who has been in the profession for 14 years told us how a Year 11 boy backed her into a corner of the staff room.

And the other staff members, they didn’t know what to do because he was stronger than all of us.

Other teachers spoke about how they had no training or preparation to deal with this kind of behaviour. One female teacher said:

I don’t think my teaching degree prepared me for any of this […]. It was a bit of a culture shock going into a school.

Another female teacher said teacher education and professional development did not acknowledge “you could possibly be the victim of sexual harassment as a teacher”. She added “that really pisses me off to be honest”.

It’s different for male teachers

A male interviewee described stepping into a senior high school classroom after the female teacher for that class had resigned due to the behaviour of male students.

She was having sexually suggestive things said to her by her students and it was not really dealt with appropriately. And she got to the point where she felt sick even thinking about coming to work […].

But as this male teacher explained, male students did not treat him the same way.

So, I just walk into the room, and they’re like, yeah, that’s the […] authority figure. It’s a man.

Other male teachers said gender-based harassment and abuse was too big an issue for them to tackle as part of their already busy and complex jobs. As one told us:

the scale of the problem is too big, and it’s really tangential as far as our duties go.

A group of students walk to the main entrance of a high school. A male teacher stands at the entrance, smiling.

School leaders are not helping

Female teachers are telling us some school leaders (which include principals and deputy principals) are not treating these issues seriously.

In one school, a female teacher left after being told by students as young as Year 7 she “looked like a porn star”. A female colleague told us how

she told the principal that she was being sexually harassed, the principal just said, ‘Well, just because you said it’s harassment, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is’.

Other respondents talked about a “hush hush” response from schools when teachers left due to student behaviour.

anything that’s challenging, [the principal is] like, ‘No, we’re not discussing that. I’ll have a discussion in private with you’.

In other industries – where the harassment of women has been ignored or covered up – this has been referred to as “ institutional gaslighting ”.

Parents are ignoring warnings

When there is a behavioural issue with a student, one of the first steps a teacher can take is to talk to the parents. But teachers in our study said parents often did not believe their sons could behave this way. As one female teacher described it, there is

a lot of eye rolling like, I can’t believe you’re treating this as an issue.

Another female teacher told us:

usually I get the response from the parent, ‘Not my boy. My boy would not do that. My boy would not have those values’.

The same teacher continued:

I’m just wondering how many parents really know their sons and have been prepared to sit down and talk about consent with their children, have been prepared to sit down and talk about respect with their children?

Read more: We research online 'misogynist radicalisation'. Here's what parents of boys should know

What can we do?

Bystander inaction to harassment and abuse of women and girls is not new . Research shows it thrives within cultures and systems where there is poor understanding of gender equity and little recognition we are all responsible for preventing or responding to this behaviour.

In Australia, we have a decades’ long policy vacuum around gender equity in schooling. So our systems are ill-equipped and reluctant to deal with this issue, despite warnings schools are becoming breeding grounds for gender-based violence and teachers are leaving.

We now have mandatory consent education , but as our research indicates, this is not being delivered consistently or effectively across schools.

Education around gender must be part of teaching degrees and a central component of the Australian Curriculum. And all of us in the community – including parents – need to take responsibility for the way men and boys treat women and girls.
