The nose opens up with baking spices , sandalwood, and a hint of pear, making it incredibly approachable . On the palate, bold butterscotch and baking spices, nutmeg, toffee, and leather are all present in perfect balance. The finish leaves behind a slight tobacco note with ingredients like allspice and caramel chews that all last long. The experience provided is incredibly unique, and this whiskey is extremely well-crafted and deserves its place on any whiskey lover’s shelf.

Frank August Case Study: 01 Mizunara Japanese Oak Bourbon is an excellent value for the price. The craftsmanship and complexity of the whiskey are unparalleled, making it one of the best bottles on the market for its price. With only 1000 bottles made, it may be difficult to get your hands on this whiskey, but it is certainly worth the effort.

Aware of the demand and standards set, Frank August is excited to announce the successful releases of their Cask Strength Single Barrel program and the highly anticipated 2nd release of their acclaimed CASE STUDY program.

SINGLE BARREL: Very early, Frank August established a philosophy to reconsider how America’s native spirit is defined and perceived by challenging the established status quo of the industry. This was further reflected in how the brand identified their picks for their follow-up release of Single Barrel by hand-selecting 15x exceptional barrels of 6.1-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, with the assistance of two of the most respected master distillers and master blenders in the industry; Denny Potter (former Master Distiller of Makers Mark and Heaven Hill) and Jane Bowie (former Master Blender, Master of Maturation and creator of the acclaimed Makers Mark Private Select program).

The precedent for this approach was seen last year when Frank August launched their inaugural Single Barrel picks by tapping the wisdom of 116 years of combined master distilling and master blending experience that went into the hand selection of each barrel.

The most notable difference in this year’s release is that each barrel selected has an additional full year of maturity, bottled at 6.1 years and ranging from 57.3% – 62.7 ABV I 114.6 – 125.4 PROOF. SRP for Single Barrels is $129.99.

CASE STUDY: 02 After earning a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for our inaugural release of CASE STUDY, the bar was clearly set high for the program. So when the opportunity presented itself at the end of last year to purchase these storied brandy casks, we knew right away it would be our second release for the program.” CEO | Co-Founder, Johnathan Crocker.

Frank August is very proud to introduce CASE STUDY: 02 | 1948 | XO PX BRANDY | CASK FINISHED. The 10 beautifully rare brandy casks in which CASE STUDY: 02 were finished were first filled in 1992 with very old Pedro Ximenez for 17 years. They were then dumped and immediately refilled with extra old Pedro Ximenez from 1948 for an additional 13 years. 30 years of considered and incomparable aging. before they made their way into the hands of Frank August in Kentucky. Still wet, they were filled with hand-selected barrels from Frank August’s exceptional Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey library. From there, they were tasted every 30 days for an undisclosed amount of time until each barrel reached the ideal sensory and flavor profiles.

CASE STUDY: 02 | 1948 continues to reflect the brand’s intention to reconsider and evolve the identity of bourbon whiskey. The perennial project explores various finishing and blending techniques to create some of the world’s most unique experimental expressions of bourbon whiskey. The reception of CASE STUDY culminated last June when its inaugural release, CASE STUDY: 01 | MIZUNARA | JAPANESE OAK, was awarded a Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was a semi-finalist for Best Finished Whiskey of the Year. Frank August Expands Lineup with Single Barrel and Japanese Oak Finish Bourbons

Frank Augst has been making waves in the bourbon community since the brand first launched this past summer, winning countless awards in the meantime. Not to mention, the bottle’s eye-catching minimalist design intrigues the drinker long before he ever takes his first sip.

The Kentucky-based distillery hasn’t wasted time on its first-ever lineup expansion, introducing a pair of new bourbons: Single Barrel Cask Strength and Case Study: 01 Mizunara Japanese Oak. Both expressions continue the brand’s label-less aesthetic, drawing attention to the liquid inside instead (there is a small removable sticker on the neck that’s guaranteed not to leave any residue if you choose to peel it off). 

The Single Barrel, aged for over 5 years and bottled between 123 and 125 proof, strikes with a warm palate filled with baking spices, cinnamon, and caramel. Meanwhile, the Case Study program will be Frank August’s more innovative line, named after the experimental housing project commissioned for the increased demand following World War II. This introductory expression, dubbed Case Study: 01, features the result of five hand-selected barrels finished in Japanese mizunara oak casks.

Continuing to capture nostalgia for the American zeitgeist of the 20th century through the vessel of bourbon, Frank August’s Single Barrel and Case Study: 01 should retail for around $127 and $160, respectively.

A sophisticated bottle design perfectly mirrors what the bourbon inside the bottle offers.

As far as I can tell, Frank August is not an actual person, but simply the name of a bourbon brand. That brand is spearheaded by CEO and Co-Founder, Johnathan Crocker, the former denim and fashion executive for AG Jeans and BLDWN. Frank August’s concept isn’t an elaborate backstory but for the bourbon (and bottle) to speak for itself. The minimalist and contemporary designed bottle is your first clue that there’s a high concept in play here. The front of the bottle only features the brand’s name in small print, where the back of the bottle features a removable back label so the bottle can have a second life as a decanter. The cap is equally well designed with a milled thin but wide metal stopper that rests just above the opening of the bottle and makes removing it a strangely satisfying experience. While many consumers take note of bottle design, there are plenty of others that will be suspect of it. So how does the bourbon fare? Notes of caramel and vanilla are found throughout the bourbon acting as a steady constant and bringing a classic style to the bourbon. From there though, the whiskey looks to expand its horizons. The nose is noticeably light and surprisingly fruity with green apple, citrus, and sherry combining to a pleasant effect. The palate introduces pear and sweet apple for its part, before transitioning to a more baking spices and oaky affair for its finish. The brand claims for all intent of purposes, that this is a bottled in bond bourbon, but due to contractual obligations couldn’t disclose its DSP number preventing it from featuring it on their label. Comprised of just 10-15 barrels, it's definitely a small batch bourbon that showcases both the rounding off some edges while also allowing it to keep some character more akin to single barrels or very small batches. I can see a lot of people enjoying a sip of Frank August Small Batch Bourbon. It’s very drinkable, inoffensive, and maintains a good balance of classic and semi-unique flavors in its blend. Much like its bottle design, it's delicate and sophisticated. It's a tight package overall that knows what it is, knows what it set out to do, and accomplishes it with precision.

Case Study: 01 Mizunara Japanese Oak Bourbon Whiskey

TASTING NOTES:

APPROACH: The Frank August ‘Case Study’ Program is a reflection of our intention to reconsider and evolve the identity of bourbon whiskey. Within each release, we will explore various finishing and blending techniques to create some of the most unique experimental expressions of bourbon whiskey in the world.

EXPRESSION: For the foundational release of ‘Case Study’, Frank August hand selected 5 barrels to be finished with Mizunara, Japanese Oak. Due to the porous nature of Mizunara, each of the 5 barrels were tested every 30 days to monitor the development of the flavor profile that was being impacted by this rare and beautiful wood. After an undisclosed time, the flavor profile evolved into a beautiful bend of butterscotch and baking spices. At which time, the bourbon whiskey was dumped and batched to preserve the wonderful notes that were created.  The final step was to find the perfect proof that highlighted all the remarkable notes that the Mizunara had imparted on the bourbon whiskey, which ended up being 114.4 proof / 62.2 ABV%.

APPEARANCE: A rich amber with discerning legs that cover your glass.

NOSE: Frank August’s Case Study: 01 | Mizunara opens with an initial note of butterscotch before some mild rye spices make their way forward.

PALATE: There’s an immediate warm, smooth, butterscotch prof ile that hits the front of your tongue, before slowly moving toward the mid-palate, where notes of apple and mild spices begin to pick up. As the whiskey coats the mouth, and moves to the back of your tongue, there’s hints of mint and pepper, before notes of butterscotch and caramel make their return.

FINISH: A beautiful pronounced finish that evolves with the time between each drink. While notes of butterscotch persist, the strength of the 114.4 proof provides an ideal balance that warms your mouth and chest and highlights some of the softer baking spice notes.
