Winter Break Homework

Ahh, winter vacation. Something that teachers and students often look forward to in order to enjoy a well deserved break! However, sometimes this means our students are getting perhaps a larger break from learning than we want them to! I love to incorporate all kinds of winter themed activities this time of year to keep the kids engaged! This fun, free, and editable winter break homework provides a great way for students to keep up some skills and good habits over break, all while still enjoying their time off!

*Pair with our Snow Centers & Activities for Pre-K/Kindergarten !

Help keep important skills sharp over break with this FREE editable winter break homework. It's perfect for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade!

When my students are away from school for a holiday or extended break, I want them and their families to enjoy the break and not worry about “homework.”

However, I also know that several of them may not do any reading at all over the break (and we know how important reading is!) Unfortunately, this sometimes happens to the ones who need it most.

So I send home this fun little sheet to motivate families to work on some skill building over the two week break. It is simple and kids love to complete it for a little prize ( eraser , candy cane, bookmark ).

If you love this winter break homework challenge then be sure to grab the Spring Break version too !

For this winter break homework assignment, the students complete the tasks on the mugs, and color them in as they do!

Homework Directions

The directions couldn’t be any more simple! The students complete the various tasks on the mugs, and color them in as they do! Easy! Yet still educational and important!

Maybe you don’t teach Kindergarten, or maybe you prefer to have different directions at the top. Good news is that this document is now completely editable!

That’s right, you can type in your own directions as well as your own tasks on the mugs!

Note: I also allow all students the chance to complete the sheet with me for a prize, especially if I know of any situation where they maybe didn’t have parent support to complete it. I will count with them, help them with sight words, etc. and count it as extra practice when they return so that they can feel proud of accomplishing it too!

Since this winter break homework is editable, you can type in your own directions as well as your own tasks on the mugs!

When I try to print the mugs. All that shows up is the words, no mugs

I’d be happy to help you troubleshoot this issue.

You’ll want to make sure you are using an updated version of Adobe PDF Reader.

You also want to make sure you are opening the email from a home computer and not at school. District computers tend to not like our emails with links in them.

Please let me know if you have any questions?

Do you have a spring break version of this?

Hi Deonna, That is a wonderful idea! I will pass the message along to Alex and see if this is on our spring plans!

I’m also looking for the Spring Break Challenge! The Winter Break Challenge was great and very effective motivating my students! We start Spring Break soon!

Check your inbox for a message from me. : ) I just finished up the spring challenge for the Sunday Surprise today and will be putting it up on the blog later, but I sent a copy your way via email. So glad you will able to use it either this year or next!

The Spring and Winter Break Challenges are fantastic! Thank you so much for helping my students motivated to practice their new reading and writing skills!

Thank you so much for making this editable! I’m a bilingual teacher and now I can make a Spanish version for my students and their families!

This is wonderful, Barb! This makes our hearts so happy. Have fun with the Winter Break Homework Printables!

You always have such great ideas. Thanks for sharing so many with us.

I am happy to Jennifer, and thrilled you find them helpful! 🙂

Thanks so much. This is perfect as I have some parents who enjoy putting their kids to work and some who believe holidays are holidays. A happy medium 🙂

Thanks Rachael! I felt the same – the kids totally need a break, but this kind of gave an idea of some activities to try too if the parents wanted to give it a go! 🙂 Plus, since it’s editable, you can put good ol’ playful activities on there too, whatever you like!

Could you share the source of your font in the editable document please? Thanks!

Hi Chris! The credits for fonts and graphics are on the first page when you download the powerpoint. 🙂 The font that is used specifically in the parts that you can edit is called KB Alpha Basic and should embed when you edit. It (along with many others) is a font that can be found for purchase here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FONTS-MEGA-PACK-Commercial-Use-License-All-KB3Teach-Fonts-160-Font-BUNDLE-1551950 Hope that helps!

Oh dear. How did I miss that? I even checked to see if the font source was provided in the document. Thank you for pointing it out and providing the direct link for me in your reply. 🙂 Guess I’m just having one of those moments (or days or weeks — lol).

No worries at all Chris! It’s December, that is reason enough! December is crazy for teachers! 🙂 Have a great week!

Hi Alex… I love this idea but am having trouble editing it. I have PP but there are no text boxes when I click on the mug. Am I doing something wrong? Diane

Five fun winter break activities that won't feel like homework.

winter vacation homework drawing

"It's a break for a reason," they might argue, and they wouldn't be wrong, but when you're ready to assign homework for the duration of winter break, you're doing it in their best interests, even if they don't agree.

So here's five winter break activities to get your students excited about homework this Christmas:

1. A Book Report on a book of their choosing, presented as they choose.

It could be "Dr. Seuss" or "War and Peace"—whatever they like, as long as they present it to the class in a fun and creative way.

Suggest a glamorized poster board detailing the events of the story, or perhaps screen a movie adaptation and talk about the differences between the film and the literature. Maybe students would like to form groups to read the same book, and perform a skit or film a video of some of their favorite scenes for the rest of the class?

The due date for the assignment doesn't need to be right when they return from break, but if you assign it the Friday before, they'll have a week of free time to be excited about what to read and how to show it to their classmates.

2. Create a Christmastime scrapbook.

Assign your students to create a fun memento over break that they will share with the class when they return.

Ask them to include what they did, the presents they received, the people they saw, and whatever else they think is interesting and fun. Suggest taking photos or drawing pictures of significant events, and including small tokens from their holidays, such as swatches of wrapping paper and Christmas cards.

When they return from break, have the students present their scrapbooks to the class or pass them around in small groups.

3. Send your students home with an interesting science experiment.

Have students write a short report about the experiment and how it went to share with the class when they return from break. Here are a few fun suggestions:

  • Pine Cone Science Experiment for Kids (via Lemon Lime Adventures). Kids will learn about what happens to pine cones in different conditions, and can bring in their findings to show the class.
  • Dissolving Fizzy Coal (via Reading Confetti). Hand out these lumps of "coal" before break to give your students a fun surprise with their homework.
  • Candy Cane Experiments (via Teachmama.com)

4. "Reado" Bingo!

The teacher at twocandoit.blogspot.com shared this idea for reading/math homework to do over break. Students earn points for completing five-in-a-row or the whole page, and you can hand out prizes for the top point earners when class resumes.

5. A simple "color by number" math worksheet.

This project is good for young kids to keep them sharp on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. This worksheet  features additions and subtraction problems on a string of holiday lights. Include instructions for what colors match up with what numbers.

5 Must-Give Winter Break Homework Assignments

Jen Schneider Blog , Reading 0

This post contains some affiliate links. Purchasing from these links helps me keep this blog running to share education ideas with this community. Thank you for supporting teachers! It’s almost winter break and your students are going to be at home with family, eating, possibly playing video games, and maybe even enjoying some snow! You want to make sure they are learning, right? Winter break homework is essential! Send home these 5 assignments to give over winter break to make sure your students come back to school ready to learn!

winterbreakhomework

1. Be kind.

be kind

Kindness doesn’t cost a thing. First, encourage your students to choose kindness every time they can. Hold the door open for a stranger, bite their tongue when they really want to snap at a sibling or a parent, and do a needed chore without being asked. #Bekind may seem like a trendy mantra for schools, but it’s really a way of life that spreads the holiday spirit. Winter break homework should be all about kindness!

#BeKind can't just be a hashtag. We have to live and model it to our Ss every day. In your words online and in person, show those around you at even though it can be tough to #choosekindness , you never know what someone is going through. Learn their story and #bekind . pic.twitter.com/ACymQgmuVz — Jen Schneider (@jenmschneider) August 7, 2018

2. Sleep in.

sleepingin

Teachers, students, parents all deserve some rest! When we get time off, we should use it to let our bodies relax. School starts so early for most kids, so give them an assignment to sleep in a bit (with parental permission and without sleeping the whole day away, of course)!

3. Spend some time with people you care about.

family time

No matter what holiday (if any) your students celebrate over the break, hopefully they will be surrounded by people who they love and care about. Keep in mind, this isn’t the case for every student in your school.

For some, school is their happy place, and home is not the best place to be. For these (and really all) students, make sure they know how much you care before they leave for the break. I don’t send my 100+ middle schoolers home with gifts (I have to watch my wallet too), but I try to let them know every day (through words and actions) that I really do care about them. If you’re worried about a student being safe over break, you should let a counselor know. If it’s more than just a worry, make sure to go through the proper channels to report suspected abuse.

4. Take a nap.

nap

Even if your students slept in, they could take a nap (provided they wake up before nap time). I promise, I will be taking a mid-day snooze on December 26 after my sugar cookie coma and Lego overload (holy cow my daughter has some Legos under the tree. . .shh. . .) subsides!

5. Read. . .anything.

read a book

OK, this sounds like a true homework assignment, but I am simply recommending for my students to read ANYTHING over break. Turn on the closed captioning on YouTube videos and Netflix shows. Read a blog post or a web article about Minecraft. Take a trip to the library and check out the latest Neal Shusterman Scythe book or an inclusive LGBTQ YA title . Anything goes over winter break. JUST READ!

Here are a few favorite titles I recommend!

Elementary Readers:

  • Pax by Sarah Pennypacker

Middle School Readers:

(My middle schoolers recommend these titles!)

  • The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die by April Henry

High School Readers:

  • I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

Check out some places to find FREE ebooks online !

These 5 homework assignments to give over winter break will have your students back to school refreshed and ready to learn in January! Of course, sending students home with bundles of worksheets, packets, and work is not recommended. “Homework” should be about enjoying time with family and a well-deserved break for teachers and students!
