You will also need to sit a NCLEX-RN exam in your chosen state in order to become a US registered nurse, after which time you can apply for your work visa and start applying for jobs.

The average salary for a Registered Nurse is $68,450 per year in the US, and just like in the UK shifts can be long and tiring due to the lack of nursing staff.

If you have completed any further qualifications in a foreign country, you must apply to the NMC to have the qualification correctly registered which may require a refresher course or additional training.

During your time abroad it is vital to keep your UK RN status, which means continuing to pay your annual registration fee to the NMC and renewing your registration every 3 years, which can be done online from anywhere in the world.

There is a high demand for nurses worldwide.

In college, I dreamed of having an international career. Several years after my sister ventured off to foreign lands to teach English, I pursued the same route — not as an English teacher but as a nurse. Now it's my sister who is visiting me in a foreign land!

Since the skills and knowledge that U.S.-educated nurses possess are highly regarded internationally, the profession can open doors to a wide array of possibilities for working abroad. The call for nurses is a cry heard from all corners of the globe, from developed nations to the developing world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), " Nurses are the largest category of health workers. Nursing personnel make up over 50 percent of the health workforce in every country of the world. In many countries in the developing world, more than 80 percent of health workers are nurses .” There is a shortage of millions of healthcare workers, and the demand is projected to double in the next generation. The vast majority of nursing schools are in the U.S. and other Western countries, and there will be a significant need for at least 6 million trained nurses abroad to provide healthcare by 2030. The demand is in addition to 28 million currently in the global workforce who fulfill a variety of general and more specialized nursing skills .

Because of a global nursing shortage and a higher demand for nursing services, healthcare organizations face staffing dilemmas reaching crisis levels in certain places. Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing , a great resource that offers a job board, reports that "countries around the world are facing critical nursing shortages. From North America to Africa and Europe, communities are challenged with growing health care needs and diminishing numbers of nurses.”

Faced with the spiraling labor shortages, healthcare organizations worldwide are scrambling to recruit nurses to fill positions through enticing advertisements in top nursing journals and on nursing websites.The range of opportunities varies from place to place, so do salaries.

In some countries, benefits may outweigh salary. For example, the seven weeks of annual leave provided by many hospitals in England mean the chance to travel. Benefits may be more important than salary to determine the most desirable job.

How to Land International Nursing Jobs

The decision to work abroad as a nurse requires intense consideration. While motivation is essential, the more informed you are, the more rewarding your experience will likely be.

Reviewing your reasons for wanting to work abroad will help you narrow your focus and determine which nursing job will meet your objectives. Here are some other considerations when pursuing an overseas nursing job. • Your Nursing Experience You will likely receive a job offer based on your previous career history. Later, once you work in an organization, you can expand your nursing skills and knowledge by pursuing another nursing job. A Canadian nurse who has worked in the U.S. and, most recently, in Saudi Arabia was hired to work on a renal transplant unit in a Riyadh hospital. She soon landed a job as a private-duty nurse, providing care to a member of the Saudi royal family at home and even traveling with the family abroad. • Your Knowledge of the Language Communication plays a vital role in the provision of healthcare. To effectively care for patients and practice safely, you should acquire a basic knowledge of the language of the country where you will be working. As native speakers of English, American nurses may restrict their search for jobs in countries where English is the primary language. However, please consider other locations where healthcare organizations may use English as their official language. Certain hospitals in the Middle East require that the staff speak English and all documentation is in English. Basic knowledge of the country's language is helpful when providing care to non-English speaking patients and interacting with local staff. At least learn conversational expressions and a list of standard medical terms. While the hospital may offer language classes and provide translators to aid communication, you should understand the language before and during your time overseas to fully appreciate the experience personally and professionally. Also, remember that while many speak English in other countries, terminology may vary. For example, in the U.K., head nurses are referred to as “sisters,” the operating room is called “the theater,” and the emergency room is known as “the accident and casualty department.” • Using Healthcare Recruiters Intermediaries, generally known as healthcare recruiters, specialize in recruiting healthcare professionals on behalf of employers. They advertise in nursing journals and on the Web. Recruiters can assist you with all the details, enabling you to work abroad as a nurse and advise you regarding banking, housing, and other vital issues in preparation for your move overseas. You can also answer advertisements and approach potential employers directly once you have obtained the necessary documentation regarding nursing registration from the country where you would like to work (see Nursing Registration below). While recruiters play a vital part in certain situations, such as finding jobs in developing nations or major cities, remember that many healthcare facilities in smaller locations outside metropolitan areas may only sometimes utilize their services. Whatever route you take in your job search, doing homework is the best policy. • Registration You will need an appropriate work visa for the country where you plan to work. In most cases, the hiring organization obtains visas for nurses. The issuance of such work permits can take days to months, depending on the country, so plan to wait in some cases. Nurses also must provide proof of licensure to practice their profession. Where you are planning to work will determine whether you need to register your nursing qualifications before you can look for a job. To practice nursing in the U.K., for example, an overseas nurse must apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for a British nursing license (see below). Depending on the licensing board, the process may take weeks to several months from the initial request to the final outcome. In countries where a system of nurse registration still needs to be established, you will need to provide proof of your nursing licensure from the U.S. The code of professional conduct you follow in the state where you are licensed must continue while working overseas.

If you want to work abroad as a nurse, there is no better time than now. You can easily achieve your international career goals with thorough research, an open mind, and a sense of adventure.

In the United States, most graduates with master of science in nursing (MSN) degrees become nurse practitioners (NP) or other advanced practice specialties, or they focus on another track like nurse educators. Internationally, not all countries use the same titles, but an MSN still qualifies you for international nurse practitioner jobs or other graduate-level employment.

You can work in many countries in a number of different roles, such as for volunteer organizations, government agencies, or directly for hospitals and health systems. This page describes some of these opportunities for nursing abroad and what to expect.

What You Need to Work in Nursing Internationally

Once you have your MSN and board certification as a nurse practitioner or other advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), you can apply for nursing jobs . Certification for other MSN specialties like educator or informatics is recommended. At a minimum, as an NP or APRN, you will need documentation of your RN license and board certification, as well as a passport.

Whether you apply directly to employers or find work through agencies that provide placement for international nurse practitioner jobs or other MSN-level employment, you may need to send your official transcripts. Just like applying for any other job, you will need to fill out an application, provide references, and participate in an interview. Depending on the location, you may need to show fluency in local languages.

Be sure to research the countries where you want to work. Find out if you’ll like living and working there and can meet all the immigration requirements, including vaccinations.

Government employers have a variety of jobs nursing abroad, but many require being able to get security clearance.

International Job Opportunities for MSN Graduates

Nursing abroad is a wonderful opportunity to see the world, expand your horizons, and encounter different cultures. These are some of the most popular international nurse practitioner jobs and jobs for other master’s-level roles.

International Locum Tenens

As an international locum tenens, you will work in temporary positions, filling the roles of other nurses and nurse practitioners. This kind of nursing abroad job is best if you want to see as many different places or roles as possible. Assignments vary in length from short per diem RN placements to weeks or even months.

Nursing Professor or Educator

One of the most exciting international nursing job opportunities is teaching. Teaching gives you a more predictable schedule, so you can plan side trips or simply enjoy your leisure time without being on call. You’ll need teaching experience and at least an MSN. Some schools or organizations require a doctorate.

Military Nurse

The United States military is another option for nursing abroad. Military nurses enter with officer rank and need to qualify for minimum security clearance. The military offers great sign-on bonuses and a regular schedule of raises. However, you will not have full control over your placement.

Private Foundation or Nonprofit Nurse

International foundations and nonprofits offer many opportunities for nursing abroad, usually in developing countries that typically do not have a full healthcare infrastructure. Responsibilities vary based on the organization and location, but they often include formal or informal teaching to help build local capacity.

Foreign Service Medical Provider

The U.S. Department of State is another government employer offering international nurse practitioner jobs and MSN careers around the globe, providing nursing care to Department of State staff. Depending on the setting, you may not have access to full healthcare facilities, and you must be eligible for top-secret clearance.

Corporate Nursing Jobs

International medical device or pharmaceutical companies have openings for nursing abroad, either providing care for patients in clinical studies or jobs like health informatics. These jobs tend to have predictable schedules and office hours.

U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps

The Commissioned Corps employs healthcare professionals in nearly every clinical or public health capacity, including international nurse practitioner jobs. Depending on demand, it may not have openings for nursing abroad at any given time.

Overseas Locations of U.S. Hospitals

Many major U.S. hospitals, such as the Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, and Mayo Clinic, offer jobs nursing abroad in their international facilities. The advantages of nursing abroad for a domestic hospital include building a professional nursing network that you can use back in the United States and less culture shock.

This is just an overview of some typical international nurse practitioner jobs or other master’s-level nursing jobs. There are many more opportunities for nursing abroad at nonprofits, the government, or local hospitals or health systems. There may also be overseas opportunities with insurance companies, technology companies, or research organizations.

What to Expect When Working in Nursing Abroad

Nursing abroad is exciting, an excellent opportunity to get paid to see the world. However, travel is stressful, even while it’s exhilarating, and living out of a suitcase can be exhausting. Even in a nearby country, such as Canada or Mexico, or in one where English is the native language, you can expect varying levels of culture shock.

Make sure to give yourself time to adjust and learn as much as you can about the local culture before you go.

International travel nursing can mean working in a state-of-the-art facility in a glamorous cosmopolitan world capital. It can also mean working with minimal supplies and resources in remote locations.

Nurse practitioners, for example, may also find that there is a different scope of practice, and they may be expected to function outside of (or broader than) the scope allowed in the United States. Talk to other nurses who have worked in the same location to understand the potential limits you might face and how they found solutions.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Ability to translate the principles of professional nursing practice in the care of assigned patients in order to provide appropriate care.
  • Ability to do a pre-anesthetic patient history and physical, which includes collecting pre-operative consults and data.
  • Ability to formulate an anesthetic plan and describe the anesthetic risks, benefits and options to the patient.
  • Ability to administer inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, and topical anesthetics and to detect unfavorable reactions in order to continuously evaluate the patient's physical status.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using appropriate resuscitation procedures for patient care.
  • Ability to provide patient care that is abreast of changing concepts and advancements in the profession.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care.
  • Ability to practice nurse anesthesia with colleagues and peers utilizing a collaborative team concept of anesthesia care.
  • Skill in conducting and managing anesthesia for a broad range of complex surgical procedures. In addition, the CRNA must be able to adapt/modify anesthesia techniques in order to optimize patient care.

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and by the use of basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques in order to perform necessary resuscitation procedures.
  • Ability to effectively blend technology, skills, and competency for the advancement of anesthesia techniques, pharmacology, and equipment.
  • Ability to apply new developments and theories to develop and demonstrate the ability to recognize and solve various complex anesthesia situations.
  • Ability to practice nurse anesthesia with colleagues and peers in a team concept of anesthesia care and blend management skills with technical experience.
  • Ability to recognize clinical and technical aspects of anesthesia care and has in-depth knowledge of anesthesia methods and techniques for the practice of anesthesia.
  • Ability to perform as a mentor, preceptor, or nurse educator providing didactic and clinical instruction for graduate-level nurse anesthesia students and/or other anesthesia care providers.
  • Ability to participate in the development of anesthesia patient care audit processes involving in depth review and analysis of anesthesia records.
  • Ability to provide guidance and instruction in preparing others for positions of leadership and ethical practices which impact patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direct nursing care to detainees with knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Provides nursing procedures as ordered following Lippincott Procedure Manual after completed IHSC Registered Nurse (RN) competency documentation on annual basis. Additionally, follows and remains current on all applicable IHSC directive and guidelines.
  • Documents all detainee encounters using S.O.A.P.E. format, followed by the nurse's signature and name stamp on written documentation or by locking notes in electronic health record.
  • Ability to assess patients' needs and coordinate appropriate nursing care plan.
  • Obtains medical histories on detainees; referring medical problems identified to the physician, or Advanced Practice Provider (APP) as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates nursing triage process and screening of detainees/residents during sick call and performs functions as outlined in the approved IHSC Clinical Nursing Guidelines, refers patients to higher level of care as appropriate.
  • Accesses interpretation and/or translation services as needed to ensure ability to communicate with detainees or others who are not proficient in the English language.
  • Provides daily nursing care as needed in Medical Housing Units (MHU) and notifies physician, or APP of any abnormal findings.
  • Provides care for psychiatric patients as indicated.
  • Coordinates health care needs of detainees with healthcare team and coordinates referrals to off-site providers as required.
  • Provides patient teaching/training in accordance with agency directives.
  • Maintains non-involvement in the security/custody aspects of care.
  • Assists the medical provider with medical appointments by taking the detainees vital signs, and assisting as necessary.
  • Responds to emergency medical calls as assigned and provides emergency treatment of injury or illness to detainees as required.
  • Performs orders authorized by the physician, APPs, or other qualified health care provider. E
  • Ensures the medical orders are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Applies knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in administering medication.
  • Ensures that medications prescribed are administered as ordered, using the 6 rights of medication administration.
  • Ensures all new medication orders are reviewed before administration and acknowledged either by initials by each new order on paper medication administration records or by acknowledging in new electronic medication administration record. When medication orders are signed off, initials are placed next to the order and circled to maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Maintains security when administering medications; maintain cognizance at all times of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among detainees.
  • Provide radiological services in accordance with nursing board state licensure rules; these services will be to conduct tuberculosis surveillance i.e. digital single view chest x-rays, if applicable.
  • Draws labs as requested and collects laboratory specimens.
  • Administers immunizations; reads and documents immunizations accordingly.
  • Follows all IHSC Public Health, Safety, and Preparedness Unit Directives and Guides to maintain environmental health and safety, infection control, and all hazards emergency preparedness daily.
  • Responsible for maintenance of medical equipment and quality control of laboratory reagent.
  • Maintains medical supply stock level, may order supplies (lab and other supplies); restocking as needed.
  • Performs record keeping functions in accordance with program policies.

  • The work may necessitate some physical characteristics that will be required when responding to an emergency situation, such as running short distance, prolonged standing and working in an austere environment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be a Bachelor prepared Registered Nurse. Must be licensed by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or territory of the United States.
  • Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act for the licensing state and/or the state in which one practices nursing.
  • Maintains current/documented professional license.
  • Maintains current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Maintains USPHS Basic Readiness status.
  • Minimum of zero to two years' professional nursing experience.
  • Professional credentials/Certification appropriate to current job specialty.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of nursing concepts, principles, and practices to perform nursing assessments of considerable diversity to include mental health, medical surgical, ambulatory and emergency nursing care.
  • Knowledge of medication administration guidelines, and pharmaceutical agents and their desired and adverse effects in order to recognize untoward effects and take appropriate corrective measures.
  • Sufficient interpersonal skills to develop a rapport with patients and coworkers during which instructional and patient health educational information is presented.
  • Requirements for safety, infection control, quality assurance, maintenance of records of patients seen, statistical information gathering, etc.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred, not required.

I applied thinking it was for a med surg unit, but it turns out it's a float pool position. At my current job, we don't have float pool positions; everyone works in a fixed department, so this is pretty new to me.
