The E-Grantz Scholarship scheme is meant for SC, SBC/EBC, OEC, and OBC students in Kerala who need financial aid to pursue their post-matriculation level education.
- About E-Grantz Scholarship
The E-Grants scholarship was started by the Kerala government in 2021 to help academically brilliant students pursue higher education without any financial burden. All facilities covered under this scheme can be received by students via e-grantz 3.0 which is an online portal for the disbursement of scholarships for students pursuing pre or post-matric education hailing from SC, ST, or OBC communities. Since its inception, this scholarship scheme has succeeded in fulfilling the academic goals of countless students who couldn’t afford to incur educational expenses. According to data gathered from a source, it has been found that the portal has so far enabled around 3 lakh students to enroll across 3,400+ colleges or universities in Kerala.
As the education sector registers growth, expenses associated with course admissions, tuition fees, and related costs are rising to make it difficult for students coming from poor economic backgrounds to continue with higher studies. To help socially and economically backward students, scholarship programs play a crucial role. The E-Grantz scholarship program is one such assistance enabling students to achieve academic milestones so that new doors to better career options can open.
Besides acting as an economic aid, the scheme organizes workshops, seminars, etc. to allow students to gain exposure to industry trends in their chosen field of study.

Candidates who want to pursue post-matriculation courses with the help of an E-Grantz scholarship must ensure that they fulfill the eligibility criteria determined by the authorities. Generally, the Kerala government bases its decision on a series of factors like family income, education, and others. Let’s explore the criteria adopted by authorities to select eligible applicants.
- Residency: As this scholarship scheme has been started by the Kerala government for the welfare of poor students, applicants must be permanent residents of Kerala to reap benefits.
- Family Income: For OBC category students, family income should not be more than Rs 100,000 per annum while the SC or OEC are not bound by any income limit. Well, the remaining backward classes need to have an annual income of less than Rs. 1 lakh.
- Category: Admission in any higher educational course will be permitted under the scholarship to students from SC, ST, OBC, OEC, and other backward classes.
- Education: Aspirants who have a good academic record and succeeded in securing at least 75% marks in the last examination can only be covered under the scheme.
- Courses: E Grantz applies to various courses that include higher secondary, diploma, degree, post-graduate, polytechnic, vocational course, and VHSE courses.
The E-Grants scholarship aims to act as financial aid to meritorious students hailing from poor economic backgrounds. Applicants generally receive the amount in their bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The scholarship amount varies as per the student’s category and the level of education they wish to pursue.
For SC/OEC Applicants
The SC/OEC candidates can receive a stipend of around Rs 630 in case they live within 8 8kms of the college. Students whose residence is located at a distance of more than 8 km from college will be offered Rs 750 while for those leaving independently pursuing professional courses, it is Rs 1500.
For Polytechnic Diploma Students
As per the EGrants program, students enrolled in polytechnic courses will receive an amount based on criteria. Hostellers pursuing the course will be granted around Rs 150 while the day scholars can get up to Rs 100.
For Post-Graduate and Professional Courses
The day scholars pursuing post-graduate or professional degree courses in any recognised university can receive a scholarship amount of Rs 200. If you are a hosteler and doing PG/ professional courses then the amount will be Rs 250.
For OBC Candidates
Students enrolled in 10+2 courses and who belong to the OBC category will be given a scholarship amount of up to Rs 160.
Before applying for the E-Grantz scholarship program, aspirants often raise a common query regarding the kind of benefits they can get once they enroll themselves under this scheme. Well, unlike any other financial aid scheme, this Kerala government-initiated program has to offer beyond monetary help. Find some of the top advantages of the scholarship below for your guidance:

- Economical help: With the assistance of the scheme, eligible candidates can receive money directly from their bank accounts. It will cover all kinds of expenses from tuition fees to books, hostel expenses, and related costs so that students can continue achieving academic benefits without worrying about finances.
- Networking scope: The scholarship provides an exciting opportunity for students to learn from professionals in the industry. It organizes workshops, events, and some collaborative initiatives to allow students to connect with the experts.
- Get Resources: To enable students to enhance their knowledge base, this scholarship program provides access to the best libraries, learning resources, and online classes. Recipients can gain benefits from getting access to various sources that help them polish their skills in the course they are pursuing.

What are PhD Scholarships?
A PhD scholarship provides funding to support a student pursuing a PhD or other doctorate.
Eligibility and selection criteria:
- Merit-based scholarships: These are for academically excellent students who have strong qualifications and CVs.
- Need-based scholarships: These support students facing challenges due to their background or personal circumstances, especially if they are from under-represented social or demographic groups at the PhD level.
Scholarships vs PhD Studentships
Some PhD funding awards are called studentships instead of scholarships.
Scholarships vs. Studentships:
- Scholarships: Provide funding for a student to pursue a PhD.
- Studentships: Fund a specific research project throughout the PhD duration.
For example, the UK's Research Councils offer studentships tied to advertised PhD opportunities or awarded based on proposed projects. The funding is directly linked to the project.
While the distinction between scholarships and studentships can be blurry, both aim to fund PhD studies.
University Scholarships
When looking for PhD funding, start with your university. Many research-intensive universities offer various funding options for postgraduate students.
- Alumni discounts: These reduce tuition fees for graduates returning for postgraduate studies.
- General scholarships: They can be merit-based or need-based, supporting eligible PhD students annually.
- Travel and research grants: Available to cover costs like conference attendance or fieldwork, enhancing affordability during your PhD.
International Scholarships
Some PhD scholarships are personalized for international students who may not qualify for local public funding options like student loans or national studentships.
- Government funding schemes: Countries offer specific competitions to attract talented international researchers. Examples include the UK's Commonwealth Scholarships, New Zealand's International Doctoral Research Scholarships, and Denmark's Danish Government Scholarships.
- Exchange schemes: Collaborative programs between countries fund each other's citizens for PhD studies abroad. The US-UK Fulbright Scholarships are a notable example.
- University awards: Many universities provide international scholarships as part of their funding options for PhD studies.
