Before we get on to the decidedly more  fun stuff, we need to take a look at the basic lesson plans that you can use for kids’ solar system homeschooling units. We’ll just dive straight in so we can get to the  really interesting solar system projects for kids.

#1 Explore Outer Space

To start the solar system unit, you should just explore space. This should be a very basic overview. Avoid touching on specific details. You can even venture  outside our solar system if you feel like it (and you think that would benefit your kiddies).

Your kids can do this by visiting a conservatory, or by going star gazing in the backyard or wilderness somewhere. For an extra boost, include some binoculars or even a telescope in your adventures!

#2 Enjoy a Solar System Project or Kit

A solar system lesson is the perfect time to dive into a solar system project or kit!

#3 The International Space Station

Here, you can start to think about the life of astronauts and the history of space stations. If you fancy it, try looking at the effects of space on the astronaut’s bodies.

Now is the time to start looking at each planet in detail. There are a couple of songs in the section below that can help all the facts stick in your children’s minds.

#5 Sun Appreciation

Once they understand the above, you can begin to discuss the sun’s relationship with Earth. Make sure to explain how we couldn’t survive without it. 

Solar System Projects for Kids

Ideally, your lesson plans should include some solar system projects for kids to  really get stuck into. After all, there’s nothing like hands-on learning, right?

Check out these exciting solar system project ideas to incorporate into your curriculum:

#1 Solar System Snack

Who doesn’t love working with food? Sometimes the best projects are completely edible. So the first solar system project idea is an edible display of each planet.

Don’t worry, they won’t be bouncing off the walls since it’s a fruit base!

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Red grape for Mercury
• Celery for Venus
• Strawberry for Mars
• Kiwi for Earth
• Pepperoni for Jupiter
• String cheese slice for Uranus
• Ham for Neptune
• Cheddar cheese for Saturn
• Corn for Pluto (if you want to include this “planet”)
• Orange slice for the sun

Once you have all the foods compiled, give one to each of your children. Ask them to repeat the names of the planets and then place them on a plate in the right order. Of course, they get to eat it after that!

#2 Styrofoam Planets

Go to the store and pick out different sized styrofoam balls. Then, stick them onto cocktail sticks (wooden skewers). After that, your children can work together to paint the planets in correspondence with the solar system. Finally, you can have your kids put their planets in order, either in a board or on another giant piece of styrofoam

You could also hang your planets from the ceiling of a hanger if you prefer.

Alternatively, if you would rather stick your planet balls to poster board instead of in skewers, cut each styrofoam ball in half and then it’ll stick nicely to your poster board. Just make sure you paint your balls before sticking them to the board. Or if you don’t want to make your solar system model out of styrofoam, you can buy a simple and inexpensive kit from Home Science Tools.

#3 Shaggy Yarn Planets

Making planets out of yarn is super fun, and is actually an easy solar system science project. I’ve embedded a video tutorial below that’s pretty easy to follow. All you need is a pair of scissors, two hands, and some yarn for every planet (and sun) you plan on making.

Once your children have finished, you can all hang them up in the right order.

#4 Chalk Pavement Planets

Head outside to the driveway or sidewalk with your colored chalks and go crazy! You and your children will have  loads of fun drawing and coloring on the pavement or driveway. Make sure they are adhering to the correct order while playing.

#5 DIY Planet Mobile

Create a mobile featuring the planets of the solar system. Use craft materials like foam balls, paint, and string to make each planet and hang them in the correct order from a sturdy structure.

#6 Space-Themed Artwork

Encourage kids to unleash their creativity by creating space-themed artwork. They can use various mediums like paint, pastels, or colored pencils to depict the planets, stars, and galaxies.

#7 Solar System Model with Recycled Materials

Challenge children to construct a solar system model using recycled materials. They can repurpose items like bottle caps, cardboard, and plastic containers to represent the planets and other celestial objects.

17 Solar System Project Ideas That Can Launch Kids’ Creativity

Learning about space encourages creative thinking, curiosity, and big questions.

There is nothing more humbling than realizing you are a small part of a solar system that is part of a much larger galaxy. As adults, it can be a brain-bending thought. But for kids, it opens up a whole world of questions, ideas, and more questions!

The enormity of space can be difficult for children to grasp, so our solar system is a great starting point.

Solar System Projects for Kids

1. 3d solar system.

A solar system model can easily help children understand where Earth fits in. Spend some time looking at the planets in a book so you can paint the foam balls accurately. Once they are painted and decorated, cut the skewers into different lengths and insert them into the styrofoam cups. Then, glue the ‘sun’ to the top of the cups and glue the cups to the paper plate.

What You Need:

• Foam/polystyrene balls (different sizes for the different planets)
• A book about planets
• 8 wooden skewers
• 2 styrofoam cups
• A black paper plate
• Hot glue gun

Age Variation: Older children can write labels and facts for each planet. They could even work out the distance between planets and cut the skewers to scale.

2. DIY Clay Planets

Tactile learning is a fantastic way to help children retain information. Making planets out of clay allows little fingers to shape and mold, which is great for finger strength. Using air-dry clay is a creative way for kids to learn about scientific concepts. Have a selection of books handy so they can look at the different colors and textures of the planets.

Age Variation: Older kids can make larger models and even do a cross-section showing the different layers of Earth.

3. Solar System Mobile

A mobile is a fun solar system project for kids. You can make them out of different materials, but to keep it simple, you can paint planets to hang on your mobile. Mobiles will look great hanging in a classroom or bedroom, and the kids will remember information better when they see it often. You can make a mobile from scratch or try a solar system mobile kit with cool features like a light-up sun.

Age Variation: Younger children can include cut-out stars, rockets, and astronauts on their mobile, while older kids can add solar system facts.

4. Solar System Pop-Up Project

This pop-up solar system is ideal for the child who left their project to the last minute. Kids can create an effective and educational project in minutes using only cardboard. You can customize the project by using different color paint or even glow-in-the-dark paint.

Age Variation: This activity can also work with toothpicks and fruit such as grapes and berries for a healthier option. Older kids could place their constellations on a large piece of paper according to their correct positions.

6. Space Scale

Kids of all ages will enjoy playing with toilet paper in this creative activity. Using 100 squares of toilet paper, you can create a scale model of the solar system. The children can then place the planets on the squares according to their distance from the sun.

Age Variation: Older kids could work out the scale themselves and plot the planets onto a poster representing the solar system.

7. Planets Word Scramble

A word scramble is a fun and easy way to reinforce newly introduced terms. You can adapt it for any age and use it to supplement the hands-on activities.

Age Variation: Stick the stencil down with tape for younger kids, so it doesn’t move. Older kids could label the planet and write one unique fact under it.

This craft activity is ideal for preschoolers. Cut a piece of black construction paper in half lengthways and tape them together to form a long piece. Using white paint, create speckled ‘stars’ on the paper. Your preschoolers can then color, cut, and stick the planets on. Then, fold the paper into a circle and secure it with tape.

14. DIY Constellation Viewer

These constellation viewers are sure to be a hit with kids. Cut out and glue the constellation template onto the bottom of the cupcake liner. Carefully punch out the dots that indicate stars. Place the liner over the top of the torch and secure it with string or a rubber band. You can turn off the light to see your constellations or shine them onto dark paper.

Be sure to ask the students questions about the planets to ensure that they understand each one. For example, you may ask, “What color is Jupiter?” or hold up a sheet of paper with the Earth on it and ask, “What planet is this?”

I love a variety of good ways to teach without a textbook! From history to art , there are a bunch of exciting ways to bring learning to life. Check out the full series here.

Today, I wanted to share these tactile ideas for learning about the Solar System, including the planet earth we live on and the moon.

Solar System

Pumpkin Solar System

Use a large pumpkin to represent the sun and two packs of mini pumpkins for the other planets. Then space them apart outside on the sidewalk or driveway and chalk out their orbital paths. While this model will obviously not be to scale, it still provides a fun and tangible way to practice the names and order of the planets. 

Solar System Snack

Get your kids excited about learning the solar system by using food! No one can turn down a healthy and delicious snack, so create a model of the solar system using different fruits and veggies to represent the planets, their orbit, and their relative sizes to each other. 

Solar System Snowglobe 

Use some clay to roll some mini planet balls and then attach them to the top of a glass jar with some fishing line. Then glue the string to a plastic ring and attach it to the inside of a jar. Add in your water, a few drops of glycerin, and of course some glitter for a little sparkle, and voila!-you’ve got a solar system snowglobe!

Solar System Ornaments

Use clear round plastic ornaments for this cute painted solar system. Choose ornaments that are different sizes or all the same circumference for this project. Paint the inside of the balls to match the colors of each of the planets. Use some string to tie into a loop and hang them on the tree!

Push Light Planets

These push on lights make for a super-cool illuminating solar system project! Just grab two packs of push on lights, some glass paint, and some modge podge. Paint each of the lights to match the colors of the planets, seal with modge podge, and let them dry. Then push on the lights to let the planets shine!

Solar System Sugar Cookie

Whip up a batch of cookie dough and pat it out onto a greased pizza pan. Use dyed cookie dough to create rings of orbit and add in some different sized candies to stand in as planets. Bake and enjoy!

If you’re looking for a fun way to get your kids excited about learning about the solar system, check out this free printable! This colorful game board will introduce a little bit of healthy competition into your learning. 

Foam Solar System Model

Use foam sheets and crayons to cut out the eight planets and a sun for the center. Just like that you have a nice and simple way to talk about the solar system and the paths of orbit. 

Solar System Button Craft

For this entertaining activity, you’ll need a plastic canvas needlework circle, paint, and some buttons. Draw the rings of orbit around the circle and center the sun button in the middle. Then attach the other buttons around the needlework circle for a unique model of the solar system. 

Felt Solar System

These felt planets, sun, and moon, are super easy to stitch up for a quick lesson on space. Preschoolers especially will love these plush pieces. 

Yarn Solar System

This solar system craft utilizes a mixture of yarn and paper mache to create a neat hanging milky way galaxy! Blow up balloons to the size you want the planets to be, wrap colored yarn around them, coat them with paper mache, and wait for it to dry. After popping the balloons, you’ll have an impressive spacey display!

Simple Edible Solar System Model

Use various kinds of candy (see post for suggestions), have the kids build a solar system on a piece of construction paper. The bonus of this project is you get to eat it when you’re done!

Planets Coffee Filter Craft

This is a wonderful craft to use when introducing the planets to younger children. Have them color with markers

 on coffee filters, spray with water, cut out, and watch space come to life in color!

Paper Mache Planets

Both younger and older children alike will enjoy this paper mache project. Colored tissue paper makes for a rainbow of planet colors. Suspend from the ceiling with some fishing line for the full effect. 

Marbled Planets Craft

Use acrylic paint and shaving cream to help create a marbled look for your planets. This is such a fun way to integrate art and science into one!

Astronaut Fine Motor Training (Stir the Wonder) – For this activity kids work on dexterity (fine motor skills), hand-eye coordination, communication with team members and problem solving skills. As is, it’s a great activity for older children, but for preschoolers it can be made a little simpler.

5 Fun Solar System Projects for Kids

Kids get dreamy when it comes to learning about space. You can almost visualize the daydreams above their heads as they take on adventures with astronauts and aliens.  Here’s some fun solar system projects for kids that your students will love!

• A Solar System Scavenger Hunt
• Create a Scale Model of the Solar System

1. A Solar System Scavenger Hunt

A great way to get your students up and moving is with a scavenger hunt. So why not take a scavenger hunt and visit every planet in the solar system in the process!  These Solar System Posters are the perfect place to start.  After you print the posters, hide them around your classroom, school or even your house.  Students can use a clipboard and paper to write down facts about each planet they visit.

If you keep a science notebook, have students take that with them on their scavenger hunt.  Then at each planet, also provide the black and white planet cards for the corresponding planet.  These are small versions of the poster and perfect for adding to a science notebook.

You can include a few glue sticks and the crayons or colored pencils needed to color that planet.  At each planet station, students will read about the planet and then add that planet to their notebook. By the time they are done with the scavenger hunt they will have added every planet to their notebook!

This packet of Solar System Posters comes with lots of options for printing.  Each poster comes in 4 different printing options {full color, ink saving color option, black and white, and reduced size for student notebooks}.  There are so many different ways to use them – a scavenger hunt is just one option!  They make a fabulous bulletin board or a full-size student book too!

2. Create a Scale Model of the Solar System

Let’s face it – there is no easy way to help our students grasp the vast amount space in space.  Depending on the age of the students, it’s hard enough just to get them to understand how long a mile is, much less miles that involve scientific notation.  A great way to help them understand is to create a scale model of the solar system.  There are so many fun ways to do this!  Here’s a few different ideas – complete with instructions!

• Solar System Predictions – NASA has a great activity that involves students making their predictions about where the planets are located and then labeling them more accurately.  This project uses a roll of accounting paper for a calculator and would be great to fold and add to a science notebook.
• Toilet Paper Solar System – Start With a Book has a super fun activity that needs a lot of space!  This one is best done outdoors or down a main school hallway.  Using toilet paper, students will create a scale model of the solar system where each square of toilet paper is equaled to 10 million miles.

3. Planet Mini-Books

Your students will LOVE making these mini-books for every planet .  There’s something about putting an activity into a different form that increases engagement.  You could provide students with a fill in the blank worksheet or you could have them make mini-books.  Trust me – they love the mini-books!

Not only is this a great science activity, but it is also a great reading activity too! Students start with a fact sheet that provides facts about each of the planets.  Then using the fact sheet, they work to fill in the missing information in each book.  A great introductory research activity that will get students digging into each planet.

Each book only needs one sheet of paper and from it students create a small 8 page book.  All the instructions for constructing the books are included.

4. Size Up the Planets

It’s so easy for our students to think of all the planets as relatively the same size floating in space around the sun.  But that is far from the truth.  There are many different ways to help students visualize and understand the size differences.  Here’s a few ideas:

• Planet Size Comparison – Using everyday items that your probably already have at home create scale model of the solar system to show how the size of the planets relate to each other and the sun.  Size Matters Science provides all the details.

• Edible Planets – This tasty visual activity from Blossoms and Bookworms allows students to connect the size of the planets to some of their favorite fruits and vegetables.  After the activity why not let everyone eat part of Jupiter!

5. Create Your Own Planet

A really great way to end your space unit is with this Create Your Own Planet project based learning activity.  After students have learned about each of the planets, they will be well equipped to create their own planet.

This project based learning packet includes everything you need to get your students thinking like astronomers.

They will take all the vocabulary and facts they learned about the solar system and apply their knowledge as they create a new planet.  Your students will love trying to figure out the characteristics of their planet, its ideal location, its size and naming the planet. Let’s not forget about describing any life found on their planet!

You can easily connect science with language arts in this project.  Students will be writing all about their planet.  With a mix of realism and creativity students really take ownership of their planet as part of this project.

At the end, invite students to take their classmates on a journey to their planet as they share the planet’s name, interesting facts and a picture or model of the planet.

One of my favorite activities of the year, I really love to see my students creativity shine through in this Create A Planet PBL project .

Solar System Fun!

There are so many fun solar system projects for kids that it makes science come to life.  Since a field trip to space is out of the question, these 5 fun activities are the next best thing.  In addition to the activities, I have also put together some close reading and multiplication activities with a space theme.  These are a great way to connect your science learning with reading and math.  You can find all of my solar system activities in one bundle!

Solar Science Experiments for Kids

Solar Science Experiments for Kids are a fun way to teach children about renewable energy sources. These experiments are geared for children ages 5-10, but may be adapted for all ages.

My daughter is getting VERY excited about her upcoming week at science camp!  In preparation for this amazing week-long summer camp, we are trying to get into the habit of “thinking like a scientist!”  

This week, we focused on solar science experiments and creative problem-solving.

Converting Sunlight into Heat.

Absorbing and reflecting heat: solar oven, solar heater: sun tea, solar prints, solar energy books for kids.

A collection of solar science experiments to try with your child in the backyard to encourage them to “think like a scientist!”

We bought this great little kid pool for our backyard and filled it up with cold water right from the faucet. Our baby put his finger in and announced, “COLD pool” and refused to get in. Without filling the pool with water from our home heater, I posed the question:

How can we heat up water the fastest?

This is the solar experiment we decided would best help us answer this question.

Materials Needed:

• 3 identical cups,
• 2 sheets of white paper
• 1 sheet of black.
• 1 plastic lining or plastic bag to cover one cup
• thermometer

Directions.

• Fill each cup with the same amount of liquid of the same cool temperature.
• Measure the water temperature and set one cup on each paper. Cover one of the glasses on white paper with plastic.
• Have a discussion and make predictions about what you think will happen to the water in each glass.
• Let the water sit in a sunny place for one hour.
• Remeasure and discuss the results.

What do you think my kids should do to heat up the water in their pool faster?

* Parent tips:

A black background absorbs more heat than a light background.

Covering the cup slows or stops evaporation. The plastic covering may also absorb some of the suns’ rays.

The kids were fascinated with warming the liquid with the sun and asked, “If the sun can heat up water, what else can it heat up?”  They got to work building their own SOLAR oven using recycled materials.

Materials Needed: (use recycled materials when possible!)

• cardboard box
• black paper
• tortilla chips
• shredded cheese

• Let your child build their own oven. My second grader found some black paper (the back was colored on) and started gluing it inside the box. She then added in some tinfoil, predicting that the foil would reflect the suns rays and heat up her cheese better. She covered the top with saran wrap in hopes it would heat the nachos faster.
• Set the solar oven in a sunny spot.
• Add the chips and top with shredded cheese.
• Set a timer for 5 minutes. Record your results.
• Once the cheese has melted, eat!
• Then, if you choose, try to build another model of a solar oven. Make some changes and compare your results. * THINK like a scientist!!!!* A scientist will perform experiments over and over again to collect data and to figure out better and more efficient ways of doing things.

Some people have tried cooking hot-dogs, nachos are WAY easier!

Keeping a science journal is a great way to connect literacy to science!

Now my kids were on a solar experiment role. “Hey, MOM, do you think we could make your tea with energy from the sun instead of wasting electricity to heat your water inside?” Sure kiddos, what will we need to do?

I love that they were thinking creatively, asking questions, and applying what they have learned.

• Large glass jar
• 2 Bags of Tea

• Fill the jar with water.
• Add 2 tea bags
• Place in a sunny place
• Gently shake every once in a while (per the kids instructions)
• Wait HOURS (they learned the sun is powerful, but does take time to harness the energy)
• Serve warm OR pour over ice cubes for iced tea!

You could talk to your kids about the sun and have them make sun-prints. We used the  solar sun print kit,  but should have just bought the  re-fill package  ($5.99 vs $10.49) as we just used the paper.

Now we are going to work on keeping our “science caps” for the rest of the month (we are stopping at a thrift store tomorrow to pick up our take-apart to be used during the camp week.

We are going to be on the lookout for electronics powered by the sun – maybe a calculator with a solar panel?

Whatever it is, I’m sure it will be fun to disassemble and tinker with. I’m thinking we won’t be able to wait until camp and may have to find a couple of items for home too! I’m not sure who is more excited about a whole week of science and inventing – her or me!

Thanks for sharing these great solar science experiments. My kids both did camp invention a few years ago and they both had a really good time learning and getting interested in science. They are currently both interested in STEM careers as a matter of fact!

Pretty soon it is going to be science fair project season! If your kids have any interest at all in our solar system, then creating a solar system model is a fantastic project idea that can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to enjoy these!

What kid doesn’t dream about being an astronaut one day and visiting the stars? All future astronauts and rocket scientists will love these fun and free space activities for kids. There are so many space activities for kids that can be done using materials you likely already have laying around the house! Our list includes crafts, science experiments, sensory experiences, and even edible science lessons. 1. Construct a spinning solar system

This fun pinwheel galaxy is perfect for teaching the orbit of the sun. All you need is a paper plate, colored construction paper, pebbles, and black and silver craft paint.

We love the idea of keeping a making box in your classroom or home so that kids can let their imaginations run wild. While learning about space, have kids create a model rocket ship from materials like paper cups, bubble wrap, bag ties, and colored elastic bands.

Learn about how CO2 functions on the second planet from the sun while conducting a cool science experiment. You can study how carbon dioxide makes up more than 96% of Venus’ atmosphere just using some everyday materials like vinegar, baking soda, and a candle.
