SAQA: 19338 The purpose of this qualification is to develop health professionals’ with skills which will enable them to function within the multi-professional team and the ethical-legal framework by: utilising critical analytical problem-solving skills to provide comprehensive community nursing based on a scientific approach; render a preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative health service; to manage a community health center with regard to human and material resources; and demonstrate leadership skills in facilitating changes in health service. Admission requirements You must be a professional nurse, registered with the SANC in the field of General Nursing and Midwifery and in possession of a matric certificate.

Method of delivery

Students have to attend interactive contact sessions via technology at an approved NWU learning support centre in different regions. For practical sessions of this diploma it is essential that students come to the campus for a week during each semester. The dates and times of these practical weeks will be communicated to students after registration.

SAQA: 19333 The purpose of this qualification is to provide the health professional with educator skills to enable them to utilise psychology and philosophy of education in creating a context conducive to learning; apply the knowledge and skills of andragogic didactics to facilitate deep holistic lifelong learning; participate in curriculum development; utilise intra- and interpersonal life skills to facilitate relationships within the personal and professional sphere and partake in health science research. Admission requirements You must be a professional nurse, registered with the SANC in the field of General Nursing and Midwifery or Community Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing and in possession of a matric certificate.

Advanced University Diploma in Health Science: Health service Management (G513T)

SAQA: 19333 The purpose of this qualification is to provide health professional with managerial skills to be utilised in rendering quality health care through application of risk and financial management principles; implementation of management information systems; management of human resources; management of health service Unit/Clinic; and utilisation of intra- and interpersonal life skills to facilitate relationships within personal and professional sphere. Admission requirements You must be a professional nurse, registered with the SANC in the field of General Nursing   and in possession of a matric certificate.

Advanced University Diploma in Health Science: Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (G515T)

SAQA: 16849 The purpose of this qualification is to develop health professionals who will be able to function as an independent practitioner within the multi-professional team and within the ethical-legal framework by: utilising critical analytical problem-solving skills in the management of the health problems of patients; assessing, diagnosing and implementing outcomes of planned comprehensive care; communicating effectively; and undertaking research within the epidemiological framework. Admission requirements You must be a professional nurse, registered with the SANC in the field of General Nursing and Midwifery.  Your current employer should give permission in writing to study as well as for working 960 clinical practica hours at SANC accredited clinics for NWU; and be in possession of a matric certificate. You will need study leave, this is a clinical course.

Students have to attend interactive contact sessions via technology at an approved NWU learning support centre. Students need to attend three compulsory blocks at the North-West University (Potchefstroom campus). Dates will be communicated only to approved and registered students. Students are responsible for their own transport, accommodation and meals. They must make their own arrangements. Students need to work 960 practical hours in a SANC approved clinic. Accredited clinics are in Vanderbjilpark, Elim and Vryheid

The purpose of this qualification is to produce professional graduates competent in the knowledge and skills required for managing and providing an integrated, holistic, scientifically based nursing and midwifery health care service to society. Who can register?

• Applicants (new applicants & Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualification) may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online. Unisa reserves the right to not process and / or to cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification. 
• Re-registering students may register for the 2024 academic year once the registration period opens.

Please note: Should you wish to start a new qualification, please  apply online for the alternative qualification during the prescribed application period.

How to choose your modules

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a  certain amount of time in order to graduate.

• Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B, but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously. You may NOT cancel your registration for Module A unless Module B is also cancelled.

Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.

You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits / modules per academic year and / or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.

The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and / or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

You must take your available time into consideration when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately

• 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
• 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.

Introduction

The Department of Nursing Science at the University of Pretoria was a pioneer in the field of nurses’ training and introduced the first undergraduate course for nurses in South Africa in 1956. Since then trail-blazing work has been done to keep abreast of new technology and changes in the profession. The Department of Nursing Science strives for excellence in its teaching and research programs, and the focus is on the promotion of the intellectual, cultural, and personal development of all our nursing students. A considerable number of our graduates currently occupy managerial posts in South Africa.

What does the degree entail?

Being a nurse means being part of a multi-professional team of healthcare workers dedicated to rendering health services to the community. The name of the course (BNurs) refers to caring, and nurses must be prepared to understand and accept people whose way of life, beliefs, values, and cultures may differ from their own and to serve them and care for them by using their knowledge and personal aptitude. Nursing Science equips students to serve others and enrich their lives. The course requires full-time study for a period of four years. During the course, students are prepared for two career fields, namely general nursing and midwifery.

General nursing

General nursing involves caring for people with different needs in different environments, such as hospitals, clinics, and private practices.

In this field, the emphasis is on meeting the unique physical, psychological and mental needs of a mother and her baby within the family and community.

The clinical learning experience is gained mainly at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. Students are also placed with other healthcare services for appropriate and extensive exposure to practical nursing. Consequently, students have to work fixed hours during the semester and also spend time nursing during certain holiday periods. Students have to register with the South African Nursing Council as student nurses.

The syllabus consists of subjects that form the basis for nursing, namely social, biological, and nursing sciences. The subjects within are presented by experts employed by the University of Pretoria. A modular outcomes-based approach is followed.

First year:  Anatomy, Nursing Studies, Dynamics of Nursing Practice, Medical Terminology, Language Skills, Physiology, Nursing Practice Education and Computer Literacy

Second year:  Community Development, Psychology, Integrative Health Care, Microbiology, Nursing Studies, Physiology, Dynamics of Nursing Practice and Nursing Practice Education

You can work in various hospitals and clinics in the community, or run a private nursing practice. The state and the private sector offer a wide variety of opportunities. The following fields of nursing specialisation are available:

What are the admission requirements?

• A valid National Senior Certificate
• English (4)
• Recommended subjects are Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology of Physiology.
• A personal interview is conducted with every applicant.
• A minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 28

For selection purposes, the sum of six subjects, including English, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences, is calculated. Life Orientation is excluded from the calculation of the APS. Selection is based on Grade 11 results, the National Benchmark Test, the Value-added Questionnaire, and an interview.

Programme Outcome

This programme leads to registration in the category General Nurse (GN R.171 of 8 March 2013). The Registered General Nurse with the qualification Diploma in Nursing will have the necessary knowledge and skills to render nursing care to patients with a wide range of conditions in a variety of healthcare settings and manage a nursing unit.

• Minimum 26 points (27 points if Mathematical Literacy applies), which excludes Life Orientation

The RPL applicant has to meet the following minimum requirements:

• Have a valid Matric (grade 12) with admission to a diploma or National Vocational certificate with the required APS score (as indicated above) or old senior certificate with an aggregate of 950 marks or higher with the compulsory subjects
• 25 years and older
• Have a minimum of 5 years of operational experience in healthcare 
• Write and pass the relevant RPL course
• Submit a motivational letter from his/her employer, if applicable

Note: A candidate can RPL only one subject

Payment of a non-refundable application fee

Recognition of prior learning based on criterion-referenced assessment of students with healthcare-related experience, if applicable

South African Citizenship

Applicants will also undergo psychometric testing, an interview and a health assessment as part of the selection process.

Rules and Requirements

• Students must have an average mark of 50% for each module to gain entrance to the examination.
• A theory examination mark of 50% per module is required to pass the examination.
• A theory final mark of 50% per module is required to pass each year.
• Competency must be achieved in all formative and summative clinical assessments.
• Students will need to fulfil all requirements to complete each study year and obtain the final qualification.
•  A supplementary theoretical and clinical examination will be granted.
•  Students may maintain credit for the theoretical/practical portions of the programme passed if they have to repeat the year.
• Mediclinic will place students for the clinical component of the programme.
• All students must work a 42 hour week minimum to qualify.
• Students may not work permanent night duty during the programme.
• Twenty-eight shifts (of 6 hours) leave (per year) will be granted during the programme (according to the rotation schedule).
• Twelve (12) days of sick leave will be granted per year.
• If all the practical requirements cannot be met in the student’s work setting, he or she will be placed in another facility by the Facilitator, in collaboration with the Nursing Manager.
• Clinical accompaniment is provided by the educator/facilitator, trained mentors, and registered professional nurses.

The student must provide:

• Evidence of clinical competence
•  A complete portfolio of evidence

Fees and Funding

Mediclinic Higher Education determines the fees annually. The fees (including uniforms) are subject to change and are published on the Mediclinic website. A registration fee of 50% of the total annual fee is required. The second payment of 50% is due by the end of June. No student will be allowed to progress to the following study year if there are any outstanding fees.

A certain number of bursaries will be allocated by Mediclinic and/or ER24 each year:

Bursary students will also be provided with a stipend to assist with living expenses, though students are expected to arrange their own accommodation and transportation to and from the various clinical facilities.

Students are responsible for the cost of any prescribed and recommended books. Other institutions requesting training for their employees will be invoiced prior to programme commencement.

Students will be expected to sign a contract with Mediclinic; bursary students will have to work back a period equal to the length of the programme on successful completion. If a bursary student does not complete the programme successfully, he/she will be liable for the programme costs and administration costs.

Student information will be shared with legislative bodies and be used for BBBEE purposes.

All students are subject to the Mediclinic grievance procedures and the disciplinary code that governs workplace conduct.

The Faculty of Health Sciences uses a Composite Index (CI) score to guide applicant selection. This includes:

• Your matric academic results for five subjects: English, Mathematics, best of Physical Sciences/Life Sciences and the best two other subjects. We consider the percentage achieved, not the symbol. The average of the five subjects carries a 60% weighting.
• National Benchmark Test (NBT) scores. The average of the NBT scores carries a 40% weighting.

The NBT should be written by 11 August.

Applicants applying to the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) and/or Graduate Entry Physiotherapy Programme (GEPP) only, as well as applicants who are in their final year of study towards a Bachelor’s degree, or who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree, are not required to write the NBT.

Because of the excellent design of UJ's online BCom in Accounting, I can balance working full-time, studying and still caring for my family. The support is fantastic, I've never heard of a University calling its students to find out how their studies are going, until seeing and experiencing it myself at UJ.
