Mission Statement

Coláiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon, is a college under the Trusteeship of CEIST, providing second level education for girls, in the tradition of Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Congregation. Catholic Christian principles underlie the philosophy of education in the School. Our School is a community seeking to develop the full potential of each student: – intellectual, spiritual, emotional and social.

To achieve this the School seeks

  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum suited to the needs of each individual and the demands of a changing world
  • To recognise and affirm individual skills and abilities through curricular and extra curricular activities
  • To encourage positive interaction and good communication among students, staff, parents and the wider community
  • To continue to develop and provide a framework of support and care which meets the needs of individual students and staff
  • To continue to provide religious education and spiritual development enabling the students to celebrate the Christian vision of life
  • To maintain and foster willingness for and openness to ongoing staff development

Inspired by these values, we dedicate ourselves to ongoing development of our School.

School History

In 1829 Catherine O’Neill of Skibbereen was the foundress of the Bandon Presentation Convent. Initially, she taught in her house in Hill Terrace. As pupil numbers grew, Catherine sought a site for a convent and school. The Duke of Devonshire responded generously by giving her a five acre site at Coolfadda, on the North side of the river for a nominal sum. From 1829 until the present time, the work of Catholic Christian education has continued, influencing thousands of young people in the greater Bandon area. Primary education still flourishes on the original site, beside the Sisters’ Residence.

In 1991, because of inadequate space on the site at Coolfadda, Colaiste na Toirbhirte, the Secondary section of the School, moved accross the river to Ard Aoibhinn at Cloughmacsimon. At the time of purchase from the O’Kelly family, it was discovered that the current 12 acre site was once the property of Catherine O’Neill, foundress of the Bandon Presentation Convent!

Coláiste na Toirbhirte today is conscious of being in continuity with a great Presentation Tradition. Foundation stones from the original 1865 building on the Northside now occupy pride of place beneath the central symbol of a Celtic Cross on the School’s street.

History was made in 2001 when the Presentation Sisters appointed the first lay Principal in the school.

It is with a confident step that Presentation College, Bandon faces into the 21st century, secure in the knowledge that it always was, and will continue to be, in the forefront of secondary education in the country

Useful Definitions of the Structures in the Catholic Church

What is a catholic bishops' conference.

An episcopal conference, sometimes called a conference of bishops, is an official assembly of the bishops of the Catholic Church in a given territory. ... Individual bishops do not relinquish their immediate authority for the governance of their respective dioceses to the conference ( Wikipedia ).

What is an Archdiocese?

Dioceses ruled by an archbishop are commonly referred to as archdioceses; most are metropolitan sees, being placed at the head of an ecclesiastical province. A few are suffragans of a metropolitan see or are directly subject to the Holy See.

The term 'archdiocese' is not found in Canon Law, with the terms "diocese" and "episcopal see" being applicable to the area under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of any bishop.[8] If the title of archbishop is granted on personal grounds to a diocesan bishop, his diocese does not thereby become an archdiocese ( Wikipedia ).

What is a Diocese?

The group of churches that a bishop supervises is known as a diocese. Typically, a diocese is divided into parishes that are each overseen by a priest.

The original dioceses, in ancient Rome, were political rather than religious. Rome was divided into dioceses, each of which was made up of many provinces. After Christianity became the Roman Empire's official religion in the 4th century, the term gradually came to refer to religious districts. The Catholic Church has almost 3,000 dioceses. The Greek root of diocese is dioikesis, "government, administration, or province." ( Vocabulary.com ).

As of April 2020, in the Catholic Church there are 2,898 regular dioceses: 1 papal see, 649 archdioceses (including 9 patriarchates, 4 major archdioceses, 560 metropolitan archdioceses, 76 single archdioceses) ( Wikipedia ).

What is the difference between a Diocese and an Archdiocese?

Each diocese is within a Province - a group of Dioceses - the Archdiocese is the main Diocese within that Diocese. The bishop of that Archdiocese is therefore automatically an Archbishop. If a bishop has been made an Archbishop personally is referred to as an Archbishop but it does not make their Diocese an Archdiocese.

What is a Deanery?

A subdivision of a diocese, consisting of a number parishes, over which presides a dean appointed by a bishop. The duty of the dean is to watch over the clergy of the deanery, to see that they fulfill the orders of the bishop, and observe the liturgical and canon laws. He summons the conference of the deanery and presides at it. Periodically he makes a report to the bishop on conditions in the deanery. www.catholicculture.org

What is a Parish?

In the Roman Catholic Church, a parish (Latin: parochia) is a stable community of the faithful within a particular church, whose pastoral care has been entrusted to a parish priest (Latin: parochus), under the authority of the diocesan bishop. It is the lowest ecclesiastical subdivision in the Catholic episcopal polity, and the primary constituent unit of a diocese. In the 1983 Code of Canon Law, parishes are constituted under cc. 515–552, entitled "Parishes, Pastors, and Parochial Vicars." Wikipedia

Coláiste na Toirbhirte

Principal’s Welcome

As Principal of Coláiste Na Toirbhirte, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our website.

I hope that you will capture a real sense of our dynamic and vibrant school.

From its earliest years, Coláiste Na Toirbhirte has a distinguished record of achievement.  Our school provides a diverse learning environment within a caring and supportive setting.

We are a co-educational secondary school sitting on a 12-acre site at Ard Aoibhinn, overlooking the beautiful Bandon valley. Our School building was built with great consideration for space and light. We are privileged to have a comfortable and spacious learning environment for our students.

Our School is under the trusteeship of CEIST (Catholic Education, An Irish Schools Trust). Coláiste na Toirbhirte was established in the traditions of Nano Nagle, Foundress of the Presentation Congregation. From the establishment of a Presentation Convent in 1829 onwards, thousands of young people in the greater Bandon area have been educated at our school.  We are dedicated to the Core Values of CEIST which are intended to support the holistic development of all within the school community.

We aim, in the spirit of collaboration, to help students to achieve their personal and academic potential in a caring and inclusive setting. We are proud of our pastoral care and guidance system and together with the dedication of all staff, we are able to support students in reaching their own maximum potential.  Our students are encouraged to develop their interests and you will have an opportunity to capture a flavour of our range of extra-curricular activities on our website. The wellbeing of all in our school community is hugely important to us.

We offer choice to students who can avail of a wide variety of subjects at multiple levels. Every effort is made to accommodate subject choice. Our goal is to provide a wide and balanced curriculum combined with a range of activities including sports, music, dance and much more. We have a strong sporting tradition with many of our students competing in athletics, football, camogie, hockey and more. Students have an opportunity to explore the Arts and the Musical is a much anticipated and much loved experience on the annual calendar.

Our students are encouraged to develop their leadership skills. Our Meitheal Team support our First Year Students from their first day in our school. Our Leadership team and the Student Council have important roles to play in the development of our school as a centre of learning embedded in a caring environment.

I want to acknowledge the contribution of all stakeholders in our school community as we work together in a spirit of collegiality and collaboration.

I hope that you enjoy our website and that it offers you an insight into the life of a student at Coláiste Na Toirbhirte.
