Mein Ne Ghurbat Ke Chahray Pe: Ghazal by Abdullah Faran [GCU FSc-II]

Contribution of Ghalib in Urdu Literature

Profile image of Muhammad Imtiaz Subhani-PhD

Writers’ are many but only few are most prominent and have immensely touched one’s heart with feelings of pain, pleasure, romance, hatred, aggression, welfare, security and everything happening around us. Urdu Literature is an ocean of beautiful expressions – this art has been bestowed to the famous Urdu poet of all time Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. His times are of the mughals era, which then forced out by the Brits and then the Indian rebels in 1857(British Colonial rule). This article is a delightful appreciation on Ghalib’s contributions towards Urdu poetry and literature, while, highlighting the shimmering reflections of his philosophy in his writings.

Tasleem Ahmad A War

Both Mirza Ghalib and Muhammad Iqbal are brand names in the field of literature written in Urdu and Persian languages. Both have achieved a legendary status not only in the subcontinent but across the world. They made experiments in both form and content in poetry. They represent the best that has been written in these languages and have set a bench mark for the prospective poets for all times to come. They have many things in common between them which is validated by the fact that Iqbal dedicates a poem on Ghalib and he features in his famous poem Javid Nama too. For Ghalib creating poetry is like drawing the heart blood from the veins of speech and Iqbal shared this understanding with him. Ghalib believes in creating meaning out of nowhere which makes his poetry enriching. If Ghalib is a master in creating meaning, Iqbal not only adds meaning to things but he is a poet with a message also. His poetry has meaning as well as message. Both of them are rebels in terms of the style and themes. Emerson"s famous adage, "Who so would be a man must be a non-conformist" fits well to both the poets due to their originality and freshness. The present paper attempts to compare the two poets by critically analysing their biographies, their beliefs about poetry, the contribution that they made to both Urdu and Persian languages and above all the thematic concerns. The study shall also attempt to evaluate critically their poetry so as to foreground the common things between them.

The only person can make history who breaking the boundations of this traditional world prepares a new face with the gust of emotion. Such personalities prepare a new world with miraculous strength, aura and ebullience, undoubtedly. Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan Ghalib was one of such personalities, whose couplets rooted into Urdu Literature so deeply and became huge tree having branches of love, philosophy, satire, irony, and departure, the flowers of those branches have spreaded their fragrance in the form of sher-o-shairi that has intoxicated almost all the learned and scholars of the world. He was the person who pitched the milestones of love and philosophy so perfectly. The whole life of Ghalib was full of struggle. However, he never accepted defeat and continued his pen touching the softest surface of heart and never avoided any circumstance of life. Although he had thorny life that anguished him every time yet he cattered beautiful roses to others with the power of his writing skill. In his writings, the moments of meeting and departure walk together hand in hand that touches stilled water of man's emotions and makes everyone the fan of his writing skill. The life for him was not more than a companion of vagabond. His responsibilities, wishes of respect and fame could never stop him following different kinds of life style with his hobbies and habits. Perhaps this is only the reason his couplets are not mere a collection of words but this is a beautiful work of emotions and draws a complete picture of man's life. It is said that Mughalean period gave three things to India and these are Taj Mahal, Urdu language and Mirza Ghalib. 'hogā koī aisā bhī ki 'ġhālib' ko na jaane, shā.ir to vo achchhā hai par badnām bahut hai.' There is hardly anybody who would not be acquainted with 'Ghalib'. He is great poet, but equally ill reputed. 1 The full name of Mirza Ghalib was Mirza Asad Ullah Beg Khan Alias Ghalib, His couplets never aimed at cheap popularity but that had a deep literature inside with purified words. The poets who generally taking the name of Ghalib quotes shallow couplets will be shocked to know that Ghalib had composed major portions of his couplets by the name Asad. Ghalib was the most interesting character of URDU literary world in India, his arrival and departure to Urdu literary world has been

Abstract The present paper is an attempt to give credit to Ghalib as the one who not only popularised the genre of Ghazal but also increased it canvas tremendously. This paper also delineates Ghalib as the last representative of Mughal’s cultural and aesthetic accomplishments. Further it has been shown how Ghalib though being a genius, always showed thirst for knowledge in all forms. As a result his poetry warrants a full and elaborate appreciation by our modern generation. This paper aspires to show how his poetry appeals to the modern man via his peculiar symbols and imagery. Attempt is made to show how his poetry uniquely integrates ideas and expression in a subtle manner, fusing sensation and emotion resulting in a poetry where ideas become feeling. The paper strives to show how uniquely Ghalib penetrates the depths of the objects of beauty as well as the depths of his own conscious, thus triggering the spiritual sense which is the greatest of poetic credits.

Prof. Irfan Ahmad

Sardar was a rebel, freedom fighter, pacifist, radical activist, storywriter, critic and documentary filmmaker at once. But, above all, he was a poet endowed with exquisite imagination, one of the brightest stars on the firmament of twentieth-century Urdu poetry. Like all great poets he was a prophet engaged in unraveling the mysteries and ambiguity of human drama. The principal theme of his poetry was compassion, love, perseverance and sensitivity surviving amidst the callous inhumanity of our times.

namrata dey roy

Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, whose shairs and gazals still encapsulate the Indian hearts was the eye-witness to the rise and fall of first Indian Movement of 1857. Being the court of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, he was considered as the great classical and the first modern poet in Urdu of India. His famous book (better say diary) Dastambu was a document of the critical period of 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. Initially a sycophantic Anglophile, Ghalib was deeply horrified and dumb-founded by the mass-slaughter, rape and loot of the blood hungry British Army. Being Muslim elite with keen sense of personal honour Ghalib at first could not support the active resistance of the Sepoys. But his idea went a sea-change perceiving the severe domination and onslaught of the British. The end of a glorious dynasty, the pang, the suffering, poverty, the barbarity of the British – was vividly described by Ghalib in his Dastambu and his shairs. This gradual change or better say oscillation from worshipper of the British to the resisting voice against the colonizers can be termed as enactment of ‘adopt-adapt-adept’ phase in a miniature form.

Safdar Ahmed

In the nineteenth century, Muslim modernist reformers sought to ground an agenda for social and political rejuvenation in a return to the spirit of the early Muslim community. However, the influence of this quest for communal regeneration on theological discourses was, in some cases, less notable than its influence upon projects for cultural and social reform. One area of focus for Indian modernists of the nineteenth century was literature and the literary arts, including poetry, which were now deemed relevant to notions of cultural health, authenticity and decline. Under the dictum that a people's condition is reflected in their language, the themes of moral degeneration and reform came to have a strong bearing on the indigenous valuation of poetry and the literary arts, challenging the criteria upon which such literature was judged. In this paper, I will analyse how the modernist agenda for social reform led to the birth of a new literary romanticism in Urdu poetry.

Prashant .Keshavmurthy

AbstrAct: This article aims to get at the voice of Ghanī Kashmīrī (d. 1669), the most famous poet of the Persian language ghazal from Kashmir and one of the foremost practitioners of the early modern ghazal style that called itself Speaking the Fresh or Speaking Anew. 1 Literary studies recognizes " voice " as designating the relationship between the narrator or narrators and their diegetic universe or universes, between a tale's teller(s) and the tale-world(s). 2 It is only by specifying the logic of these relations that we may then specify the overarching logic of an author's voice. In the generic context of the pre-nineteenth-century Persian ghazal, voice designates the relations between the many personae the speaker might adopt and the topoi (maḍmūn, pl. maḍāmīn) he adapts. We judge the attitude he takes toward these personae on the basis of the tropes or figures of speech he uses because they signal the degree and quality of his adaptations of them. In the early modern Persian ghazal, more than any other period in Persian literary history, these tropes and the metaphors and syntactical patterns they are embedded in signal a reflexive distance between the poet and his personae.
