23.1 Cover Letters for Affirmative Applications

23.1.1 cover letter for “barebones submission”.

If you are submitting an affirmative application, as discussed in Chapter 14, it is advisable to submit the I-589 almost completely by itself, with other documentation to follow later, so as to get your client, as soon as possible, a spot in the long line for an asylum interview. The cover letter for this “barebones” application may look as follows:

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Citizenship and Immigration Services [LOCATION] Service Center [see p. 10 of the I-589 instructions]x [ADDRESS LINE 1]x [ADDRESS LINE 2]x

Re: Joao Doe (DOB 01/01/1901)

After submitting a barebones application, and up to one week before the scheduled asylum interview, you can submit additional documentation in support of the client’s application (see Chapters 14–22). NOTE that these submissions should go directly to the Asylum Office with jurisdiction over the client’s claim, not to the Service Center to which you previously sent the barebones application. The cover letter for these submissions may look as follows:

23.2 Cover Letters for Defensive Applications

23.2.1 cover letter for i-589 filing.

Usually, Form I-589 is submitted in open court at a Master Calendar Hearing (MCH). If, however, your first MCH is scheduled more than a year after your client’s most recent entry to the U.S., you will likely wish to file the I-589 within that first year (or as soon as possible thereafter), by mail or in person. This procedure is described in a 2016 memorandum from the Chief Immigration Judge, available at  http://www.justice.gov/sites/default/files/pages/attachments/2016/09/14/oppm_16-01.pdf . If you hand-deliver it, bring an extra copy with you to be date-stamped for your records. If you mail it, include an extra copy and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return service of a date-stamped version, and a short cover letter (which does not and should not replace the immigration court’s own formatting and filing requirements, described in detail in the Immigration Court Practice Manual at  http://www.justice.gov/eoir/office-chief-immigration-judge-0 . Your cover letter may look as follows:

U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review [LOCATION] Immigration Court [ADDRESS LINE 1]x [ADDRESS LINE 2]x

Re: Joao Doe (A-Number XXX-XXX-XXX)

Dear Clerk of the Court:

Attached please find the above-referenced individual’s application for Asylum, Withholding of Removal, and relief under the Convention against Torture (Form I-589). Pursuant to OPPM 16-01, I am hereby filing Form I-589 on Mr. Doe’s behalf. Enclosed please find:

  • An original Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney or Accredited Representative (Form EOIR-28);
  • An original Application for Asylum, and for Withholding of Removal (Form I-589), plus one copy for return service;

Please confirm receipt of this Form I-589 by returning a date-stamped copy in the enclosed, pre-addressed, stamped envelope.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at the number above if you have any questions regarding this matter. Thank you for your consideration.

What is a USCIS Cover Letter and Why is it Important?

Navigating the complex maze of the immigration application process can be daunting. For those submitting applications to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), crafting a clear and logical USCIS cover letter could make a significant difference in the review of your application.

A cover letter does more than just introduce your application packet — it is a guide for USCIS officials through your paperwork. Positioned at the beginning, it provides a succinct summary of your case by detailing your reasons for applying and outlining the contents of your submission.

When is a Cover Letter Particularly Useful?

While not mandated by USCIS for visa applications or immigration benefits , a cover letter comes in handy under specific situations. It is particularly beneficial when you need to clarify uncommon circumstances. For instance, if you’re involved in an immigration process based on a marriage green card and there’s been an instance of living separately from your U.S. citizen or green card holder spouse, a cover letter is your opportunity to address this at the outset.

“A well-structured USCIS cover letter not only enhances clarity for immigration officials but also acts as a personal checklist, ensuring your application is comprehensive and complete.”

Crafting an Effective USCIS Cover Letter

When creating your USCIS cover letter, essential elements to include are:

  • Fees associated with filing and biometrics (if any)
  • A closing section with your contact details
  • Your signature and printed full name

Submissions Vary – Customize Your Cover Letter Accordingly

The USCIS website provides detailed guidelines for each type of application. It is crucial to review these to understand which supporting documents to include. You can find specific instructions on submitting a Form N-400 naturalization application in the Citizenship or Naturalization section.

Finding the Right Address and Determining Fees

Identifying the appropriate mailing address for your USCIS submission is equally important. Official resources can be accessed on the USCIS website , which offers detailed information and can direct you to the correct address.

Regarding fees, they vary based on application type. USCIS provides a Fee Calculator which assists applicants in determining the exact cost based on the form and specific personal details like age.

cover letter on letterhead to the director general of immigration

I'm trying to apply for an e-Visa single entry for my wife of Philippines nationality. It requires me to upload a cover letter addressed to the Director General of immigration. Anyone has experience with this and has an example of how this letter should be composed like?

I've just had a look on my computer for a copy of one I had to do, but can't find it.

The only answer I can give is that I followed the advice of a previous poster who said about his whole application, in full -

Within 24 hours I had my e-Visa approval back by email which I printed and took with me."

There are a lot of places in Africa that should be high up on your travel bucket list, and I believe that Zambia should be one of them! After all, aside from the fact that you can find the famed Victoria Falls on its borders, you’ll also find a lush wilderness and diverse wildlife that will fill you to the brim with awe. (Zambia Visa)

Though, if by chance you are worried about ease of entry, don’t fret because getting a Zambia visa is fairly easy — especially now that they offer the possibility of doing it online through an e-Visa application.

…But first, a disclaimer :

NO ONE  can give you a guarantee on your Zambia visa’s approval — not even a lawyer, a consultant, a travel agent, or an embassy employee. Anyone who says otherwise is most likely going to be a scammer. That being said, what I can offer you here is a comprehensive guide with helpful tips to increase your chances of getting that Zambia tourist visa.

How to Apply for a Zambia Visa Online

Step 1: determine if you are eligible for a zambia visa.

As an alternative to visas issued at Zambia embassies, missions, and ports of entry, it is now possible for all foreign nationals to apply online for a Zambia e-Visa through this link .

This kind of Zambia visa will be valid for 3 months (90 days) from the approval date, and you must enter the country on any date within this period — failure to enter within this period renders the e-Visa invalid, and thus you will have to make a new application.

If you’re a national/citizen of any of the countries listed below, then you do NOT need to apply for a Zambia visa / e-Visa.

Angola Anguilla Antigua and Bermuda Australian Antarctic Territory Bahamas Barbados Belize Bermuda Botswana British Antarctic Territory British Indian Ocean Territory British Virgin Islands Cayman Islands Channel Islands

Cyprus Dominica Falkland Islands Falkland Islands Dependencies Fiji Islands Gilbraltar Grenada Hong Kong Ireland Isle of Man Jamaica Kenya Kiribati Lesotho Malawi Malaysia Maldives Malta

Marshall Islands Mauritius Montenegro Montserrat Mozambique Namibia Nauru Niue Norfolk Island Pitcairn Islands Romania Ross Dependency St. Helena St. Kitts and Nevis St. Lucia St. Vincent and Grenadines Samoa

Serbia Seychelles Singapore Solomon Islands South Africa Swaziland Tanzania Tokelau Tonga Trinidad and Tobago Tuvalu Turks and Caicos Island Uganda Vanuatu Western Samoa Zimbabwe

Naturally, if you do NOT find your country above, then you need to apply for a Zambia visa / e-Visa. Of course, you can opt to apply through your local Zambia embassy, but if you want an easier and faster way, then getting an e-Visa online is far better.

To date, it is possible to apply for single entry, double entry, multiple entry, and transit e-Visa.

NOTES : – If you are visiting less than 24 hours only, Zambia can issue a ‘day trippers’ visa for $20 but this is only issued at a port of entry (Victoria Falls and Kazungula Border Controls). Take note that for this, you must also exit at that same port. This kind of visa also applies to tourists visiting Zambia and who also wish to visit a neighboring country and then re-enter Zambia again within 24 hours. . – If you plan to visit both Zimbabwe and Zambia multiple times, you can apply for a KAZA Univisa ($50). You can check this link if you’re eligible for this. Take note that this visa is valid for up to 30 days as long as you remain within Zambia and Zimbabwe, and you can apply for it online or at certain ports of entry. It also covers those who visit Botswana for day trips through Kazungula Borders.

Step 2: Prepare the required documents and information for your application

Before you lodge your Zambia visa application online, it’s best to prepare the following beforehand…

DOCUMENTS (In English)

  • The photo must be a .JPEG file.
  • Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date that you intend to enter Zambia.
  • Your passport must also have at least 2 consecutive blank pages.
  • A signed document written by you, wherein you basically explain your reason for traveling to Zambia. This should be addressed to the Director General of Immigration. For a sample letter, you can see the one that I wrote here .
  • This is a document that is needed and which you must also upload for your online application.
  • TIP : See here for a list of the ‘ best hotels in Zambia ‘.
  • You can easily get a flight reservation online with OneWayFly for a small fee of only Php 1,000~. I highly recommend them because they are fast, easy, and legitimate; plus, I have been using them for years for all of my visa applications! (Read here for more info).
  • Later on, in case you want to book your flight, my go-to platform is Skyscanner since i t always looks for the best fares and flight combinations possible across all airlines.

INVITED BY SOMEONE IN ZAMBIA…? (Prepare the following too)

  • This should be signed and addressed to the Director General of Immigration by your host.
  • It must also include the full physical address and telephone number of your host.
  • i.e. copy of NRC/ Zambia Immigration Permit.
  • Note that persons on Study, Visiting, Temporary Employment Permit, and Temporal Permits CANNOT invite visitors or act as hosts for a Zambia visa application.

OTHER INFORMATION (Vital info needed when filling up your e-Visa application online)

  • Entry and exit date of your travel to Zambia
  • A debit card or credit card
  • ***Depending on your nationality, type of visa desired, and purpose of visit, there may be additional requirements that will be needed from you (which is not listed above). Rest assured, you will be informed of these requirements after you select your country, type of visa, and travel dates on the online portal for the Zambia e-Visa .

Step 3: Process your Zambia Visa application online

To finally initiate your Zambia visa application, simply go to this website and click the green button that says “ Apply ” under the first white box titled ‘ ✓ 1. Apply’ .

The next pages will be very easy and self-explanatory as it asks for important information regarding you and your intended Zambia trip.

I will NOT go into so much detail on this because every section will be pretty straightforward and easy to understand when you’re filling it up.

NOTE : Enter an active email address that you use because they will be communicating with you through it.

Step 4: Do the visa fee payment

Once you’re done filling in the required details of your e-Visa application, the website will proceed to the payment page. Below are the fees required (in USD currency) as per the type of Zambia tourist visa/e-Visa that you are applying for…

  • Single Entry = $50
  • Double Entry = $80
  • This is issued only by the Headquarters through the e-Visa online facility.
  • For those who are transiting through Zambia using land transport, and it will be valid for a maximum period of seven (7) days.
NOTE: Single, double, and multiple-entry visas are valid for ninety (90) days or 3 months from the date of issuance, with the exception of nationals from the United States of America (since multiple-entry visas issued to them have a validity of three (3) years, on a reciprocal basis).

WHAT IS THE METHOD OF PAYMENT? You can pay the visa fee via debit or credit card on the online portal.

Once this visa fee payment is made, your application will be instantly submitted for processing and you will also receive an email that indicates your reference no . (which you can use later on to track the status of your application). In a separate email, you will also receive a receipt of your visa fee payment and you must print this and present it when you enter Zambia. . !!! IMPORTANT: In this email, they will also be sending a confirmation link which you need to click in order to verify your email address and activate your Zambia visa application. If you do not confirm within 1 hour, your application will be canceled — so make sure that you click it.

Step 5: Wait for the results of your E-Visa application

Within 3 or 5 working days — as dependent on your visa category — you can expect to receive feedback regarding your Zambia visa application via the email that you registered on the e-Visa online portal.

If you want to, you can track the progress of your application by going to this link. Just enter your reference no. and passport no to check the status.

For my case, I got my approval letter in just 3 working days! If your application is successful, your Zambia e-Visa authorization/approval letter will be attached to the email that will be sent to you (you can also download it from this link ).

Sample Zambia Visa Approval Letter

Simply print out this letter and then present it together with your passport and visa fee payment receipt upon arrival in Zambia.

Immigration officers at ports of entry can verify your e-Visa on their system; but remember that as is the case with all visas, it is their right and discretion to deny you entry even if you have an e-Visa authorization/approval letter.

But rest assured, as long as you have all your documents ready, you should be fine!

IMPORTANT: If you are arriving from or have transited through a yellow fever zone (for more than 12 hours), you must carry a yellow fever vaccination card since it may be required of you at the port of entry. For a list of the countries that are deemed at a risk for yellow fever, go to this link . For a more updated list, you can inquire with your local Zambia embassy.

TIP: It’s a good idea to crosscheck the prices with other popular travel insurance providers like World Nomads and HeyMondo (as my reader, you get 5% off)! . However, take note a travel insurance’s affordability typically means lesser coverage; so please always ensure that you read the fine print in order to decipher which travel insurance company is the right fit for you and your trip!

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

You can apply 30 days before your flight. Just remember that the Zambia visa approval letter is valid for 3 months from the approval date — so you must enter Zambia on any date within this period. Failure to enter within this period renders your Zambia e-Visa invalid and thus you will you will have to make a new application.

The Embassy of Zambia did not explicitly state a money requirement, so just make sure that your bank account covers the cost of your flight, accommodation and daily expenses for the trip.

Like I’ve mentioned above, it usually takes 3 or 5 working days. I got mine in just 3 days.

You can check here to track the progress of your Zambia visa application.

I highly advise that you get travel insurance for your trip to protect yourself from any unwanted hassles such as travel delays, lost baggage, accidents, etc. To avail, I would highly recommend SafetyWing because they offer the best price and coverage.

How To Write a Cover Letter for Your Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) Application

To get a family-based green card, you need to submit Form I-130 and supporting documents to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and pay the required fees. It’s a good idea to include a cover letter with your application as well. It can help keep everything organized and gives you a chance to highlight anything in your application that USCIS should know about. This article explains what a cover letter for a family-based green card application is and the elements it should include. It also includes a template you can use to write your own.

Jonathan Petts

Written by Jonathan Petts .  Updated May 17, 2023

What Is a Form I-130 Cover Letter?

You’ll need to file Form I-130 : Petition for Alien Relative if you are a U.S. citizen or green card holder who wants your family member to obtain lawful permanent resident status. You may petition on behalf of an immediate relative, such as a spouse, sibling , or parent. You may file this petition for your relatives even if they are outside of the United States. If they are abroad when you file, you’ll need to use the direct consular filing process instead of the U.S.-based adjustment of status process .

Though not required, many immigrants, sponsors, and immigration lawyers choose to include cover letters to preface a USCIS application. A cover letter is a short letter where you may introduce yourself, describe your background, list your application components, and state the specific immigration status or benefit you, your relative, or your client is seeking.

As a sponsor completing Form I-130, you can write a cover letter to explain your relationship with the immigrant applicant. You can also address any questions or unusual circumstances about your relationship. Writing a cover letter can also help you double-check whether you’ve included everything you need in the application. By writing a complete list of the documents in your package, you’ll be able to see if there’s any application component you’re missing.

Is a Cover Letter Required for My Family Green Card Application?

USCIS does not require a cover letter to process the I-130 petition. However, a cover letter can be beneficial. When sponsoring your relative to adjust status, you can use a cover letter to explain you and your relative’s circumstances to USCIS. USCIS can better understand and evaluate your application given the greater context a cover letter provides.

If there is anything unusual about you and your relative’s relationship, a cover letter also gives you the space to address these concerns. For example, if you are estranged from or have not seen your relative in a long time, you may want to use part of the cover letter to explain your situation to USCIS. You can explain why you have not been in contact for a long time and how getting a green card for your relative would help rebuild your relationship. By giving them greater clarity on circumstances like this, you can make it easier for USCIS to process your application.

What Should My Form I-130 Application Cover Letter Include?

You should begin your Form I-130 cover letter with a heading and greeting. Your heading should provide USCIS officials with your mailing address, your name, and your foreign relative’s name. Your introduction should then explain your reasons for writing this cover letter. Use your introduction to give USCIS a basic overview of your relationship and tell them you are sponsoring your relative’s green card application.

Checklist of Information To Include in Form I-130 Cover Letter

USCIS will find it most helpful if you include the following information in your cover letter:

Your contact information

The USCIS address to which you’re sending this letter

Your full name as the petitioner

Your relative’s full name as the beneficiary

A note stating which form and status you are filing an application for

A list of all the supporting documents you’ve included in this package, in bullet points:

Your birth certificate

Your relative’s passport, which must be valid for at least six months beyond their intended date of entry into the United States.

Two passport-style photographs that meet Department of State requirements . You and your relative must take two photos each within 30 days of filing.

You and your relative should each provide supporting documents relating to your address and employment histories for the last five years.

Your relative should also provide their I-94 information if they are present in the United States. If USCIS has involved your relative in any previous immigration proceedings, you’ll also need to disclose this.

If petitioning for your spouse, you’ll need to provide your marriage certificate. You must also prove that any of your prior marriages are legally terminated. For example, you may provide a divorce decree or a deceased spouse’s death certificate. Be sure to provide the date of termination if applicable.

When petitioning for a spouse, you’ll also need to prove that you have a bona fide marriage , meaning that your marriage is genuine. You may prove this by providing documents that show you have shared liabilities, assets, insurance, tax filings, children together, or other shared commitments.

Your signature and the date

Finally, you should conclude your letter by thanking USCIS for their consideration of your relative’s case. Be sure to sign and date the letter before enclosing it in the application package.

Filing Fee and Address Information for the Form I-130 Application

You may either file Form I-130 and your cover letter online or through a direct filing address in the mail. When filing, you’ll also need to include the $535 filing fee for this form. You may pay this fee with a money order, personal check, or cashier’s check. You should make any checks payable to the “U.S. Department of Homeland Security.”

When filing at a USCIS lockbox, you also have the option to pay by credit card. To pay with a credit card, you’ll need to file Form G-1450 : Authorization for Credit Card Transactions.

Note that if you are using the direct consular filing process, you’ll need to work with your local U.S. embassy or consulate to determine fees. Your embassy may also require different documentation when considering your application.

Form I-130 Cover Letter Template

You may use the following template for guidance when writing your USCIS Form I-130 cover letter. However, be sure to edit each field to reflect your own situation. The sample cover letter below is for a marriage green card. However, marriage green cards are not the only family-based green cards. You can also petition for other immediate relatives. To double-check whether you may petition for a certain relative, visit USCIS’s page on Form I-130 .

You should replace each [bracketed field] with personalized information. To access an editable version of the Form I-130 cover letter sample below, you can make a copy of this sample cover letter for Form I-130 .

Your immigrant relative will be known as the “beneficiary” in this visa petition. You, the U.S. citizen sponsoring your immigrant relative, are the “petitioner.” Note that you must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder to successfully sponsor your foreign relative’s immigrant visa application.

Tips for Writing Your Family Green Card Cover Letter

When writing your cover letter, be sure to write as clearly and concisely as possible. USCIS will find it more helpful for a letter to have a clear summary of your application materials than for a letter to be too detailed in unnecessary areas. Be sure to use bullet points when laying out your application contents in the supporting documents category.

Within your letter, be sure to mention that any documents you’ve provided are accurate and true. You should also note that these documents are acceptable for USCIS, meaning that they are unaltered, original documents or photocopies. If you need to include any certified translations in your application, you should also mention this and note that you’ve included both the original non-English and translated documents.

A Cover Letter has two (2) benefits. First, it is a nice document for a USCIS Officer to receive when they open a packet. It allows the officer to quickly see a snapshot of the filing. Second, the Cover Letter forces the filer to review what they are sending. If Anything important is missing, it is more evident than in a stack of papers 300 to 500 pages thick.

Evidence is “VERY IMPORTANT” for every Immigration Filing. To see our template checklist, please visit our Immigration Checklist: https://www.fickeymartinezlaw.com/immigration-checklist/

Common Questions:

Where can i confirm immigration fees.

USCIS Offers the following USCIS Immigration Fee Tool to assist in providing USCIS the proper filing fee: https://www.uscis.gov/feecalculator

Additionally, USCIS.gov also states the fee for each USCIS Form.

Where can I confirm the USCIS Mailing Address?

USCIS.gov is the ONLY place you should confirm/receive the USCIS Mailing Address.

Are the I-765 and I-131 free with an I-485?

Yes. The Employment Authorization and Advance Parole/Travel Document are free when filed with an I-485 Adjustment of Status Filing.

Do I need Passport Photos for the filing?

Yes, most Green Card related filings require passport-style photos, or they are highly recommended. When in doubt, add them to the filing.

Are Copies of Documents ok?

Yes, copies of all documents are acceptable, as long as the copy is a nice color scan. The only time to provide original documents is when they are specifically requested by USCIS, and when submitting Certified Copies of Court, Police, and Prison Records.

What type of documents should I attach with a filing?

What is a Form i-130 cover Letter?

When filing a marriage green card application with the U.S. government, some applicants choose to include a cover letter in front of Form I-130 (“Petition for Alien Relative”) in their application package. The cover letter (which is not mandatory as per government requirements) acts as a table of contents for all of the forms and supporting documents included in a marriage green card application. The letter can also be used to explain unique circumstances or provide further context so that immigration officers may have a more holistic understanding of a couple’s application.

In this guide, we’ll explain when it’s best to include a cover letter and what information it should contain . We’ve also prepared free downloadable cover letter templates you can use as a starting point for your application.

The cover letter should be properly dated and signed, and it should include the following key information:

  • Date of filing
  • USCIS filing location
  • Introduction paragraph
  • List of all forms and filing fees included in the application
  • Detailed list of supporting documents included for each form
  • Marriage date and location of petitioner and beneficiary

cover letter on letterhead to the director general of immigration

I'm trying to apply for an e-Visa single entry for my wife of Philippines nationality. It requires me to upload a cover letter addressed to the Director General of immigration. Anyone has experience with this and has an example of how this letter should be composed like?

I've just had a look on my computer for a copy of one I had to do, but can't find it.

The only answer I can give is that I followed the advice of a previous poster who said about his whole application, in full -

Within 24 hours I had my e-Visa approval back by email which I printed and took with me."

Employment Letter for Schengen Visa Application

Discover the significance of employment letters as official confirmations of job status and role details issued by employers to employees.

An employment letter is a formal document issued by an employer to an employee to confirm their employment status and provide information about their job.

When applying for a Schengen visa , some embassies or consulates require you to submit an employment letter as part of your visa application. This letter gives the embassy or consulate more information about your employment status and helps establish your trip’s purpose and itinerary.

What Is the Purpose of an Employment Letter?

The purpose of an employment letter for a Schengen visa is to provide the embassy or consulate with information about the applicant’s employment status, financial stability, and intent to return to their home country after the trip.

The letter verifies the applicant’s employment status, including job title, length of employment, and salary, and provides information about their financial ability to support themselves during their trip. The letter also confirms the applicant’s intention to return to their home country after their trip, which assures the embassy or consulate that the applicant has strong ties to their home country and is not likely to overstay their visa.

Submitting a well-prepared employment letter is crucial to the success of a strong Schengen visa application. It will improve the chances of visa approval.

What to Include in an Employment Letter?

Important information that an employment letter for a Schengen visa should include is:

  • Personal details . You must include the full name and passport number of both the host and guest (visa applicant).
  • Details of employment . This includes the job title, salary (monthly or annual), length of employment, date of employment commencement, and nature of employment (permanent or temporary) of the visa applicant.
  • Purpose of travel . Outline the specific work-related or business-related reason for visiting the Schengen area.
  • Travel itinerary . Put down the travel dates, destination cities, countries, and planned activities or events.
  • Details of the employer or host company . This includes the name, address, and contact information, as well as the contact information of the HR representative or supervisor.
  • Financial information . Put down the details of who will cover the trip’s expenses as well as any financial support the sponsor will provide.
  • Confirmation of approved leave for the duration of the trip. State that the employer has approved the applicant’s time off for the journey.
  • Confirmation of return. You need a statement that the applicant intends to return to your home country at the end of the trip.
  • Signature and contact information . The host must put down their name, title, and signature, as well as their phone number and email address.

In addition, some general rules a letter of employment must follow include the following:

  • The letter should be written on company letterhead and signed by an authorized employer or company representative.
  • The letter should be written in the language of the embassy or consulate where the visa application will be submitted. If the embassy or consulate has specific requirements regarding the format or content of the letter, those should be followed.
  • Submitting the employment letter for the Schengen visa as part of the visa application process is essential.

What Should I Submit if I Am Unemployed?

As an unemployed visa applicant, you cannot provide an employment letter as part of your Schengen visa application. However, there are other documents you can submit in its place to demonstrate your financial stability and ties to your home country:

  • Bank statement or other financial documents. You can submit a bank statement or other financial documents as evidence to demonstrate that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in the Schengen area. This can indicate that you have adequate financial resources to cover your expenses while traveling .
  • Evidence of assets . You can also present proof of any assets you may possess, such as property or investments. This helps establish that you have significant connections to your home country and are more likely to return after your trip.
  • Letter of support from a family member or friend. You can obtain a letter of support from a family member or friend residing in your home country. This letter confirms your connection to your home country and their willingness to provide financial assistance during your trip. In addition, it can indicate your support system in your home country and the likelihood of returning after your trip.

What Should I Submit if I Am Self-Employed?

If you are self-employed, you can submit the following documents to demonstrate your self-employment status and financial stability:

  • Business registration documents or business licenses. Providing these documents can demonstrate that you are legally self-employed and engaged in a legitimate business activity.
  • Business bank statements or other financial documents. Submitting these documents can show that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses while traveling in the Schengen area, which can help prove your financial stability and ability to support yourself during your stay.
  • Letter from your accountant or financial professional. A letter from your accountant or other financial professional can confirm your financial status and ability to support yourself during your trip, including information about your income, tax returns, and further relevant financial details.

What Are Some Common Mistakes to Avoid?

Here are some common mistakes that applicants make when obtaining or submitting an employment letter for a Schengen visa and how to avoid them:

  • Not including all the required information. Insufficient or incomplete information may cause delays or rejection of the visa application. To prevent this, applicants should meticulously review the specific requirements for their Schengen visa and ensure the letter contains all the necessary information. Seeking guidance from the embassy or consulate where they plan to submit their application is also recommended.
  • Submitting an incorrect letter. Any mistakes, such as incorrect dates or wrong information about the employer or host company, can lead to delays/rejection of the visa application. Therefore, applicants should carefully review the letter and ensure all the information is correct before submitting it.
  • Not being truthful or providing false information. Falsifying information or failing to be honest in the employment letter for a Schengen visa can result in instant rejection of the visa application and potentially severe consequences. Consequently, applicants must ensure that all information in the letter is honest and accurate. To prevent any problems, it’s recommended that applicants carefully review the contents of the letter and seek assistance from the embassy or consulate where they intend to submit their application.
  • Submitting a letter not on company letterhead or not signed by an authorized representative. The employment letter for a Schengen visa must be written on company letterhead and signed by an authorized employer or company representative. Applicants should confirm the specific requirements with their employer or host company and ensure the letter meets all the necessary criteria.
  • Not including additional documentation. Depending on the visa requirements, applicants may need to include additional documentation with their employment letter for a Schengen visa. Applicants should carefully review the visa requirements and ensure they include all the necessary documentation in the employment letter.

What about your immigration lawyer cover letter format: organizing and structuring your information

Here is one secret you should know about your immigration lawyer cover letter assessment. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't analyze your cover letter.

You should thus focus on making an excellent impression on recruiters by writing consistent:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraphs (and explanation)
  • Promise or Call to action
  • Signature (that's optional)

Now, let's talk about the design of your immigration lawyer cover letter.

Ensure all of your paragraphs are single-spaced and have a one-inch margins on all sides (like in our cover letter templates ).

Also, our cover letter builder automatically takes care of the format and comes along with some of the most popular (and modern) fonts like Volkhov, Chivo, and Bitter.

Speaking of fonts, professionals advise you to keep your immigration lawyer cover letter and resume in the same typography and avoid the over-used Arial or Times New Roman.

When wondering whether you should submit your immigration lawyer cover letter in Doc or PDF, select the second, as PDF keeps all of your information and design consistent.

The top sections on a immigration lawyer cover letter

  • Header: Includes the candidate's contact information, date, and the employer's contact information, which is essential for proper identification and correspondence.
  • Opening Greeting: Personalizes the letter by addressing the hiring manager by name, showing that the candidate has done their research and is serious about the position.
  • Introduction: Briefly introduces the candidate and states their interest in the immigration lawyer position, providing a hook to engage the reader and encourage them to read on.
  • Legal Experience and Skills Summary: Highlights the candidate's relevant legal expertise, particularly in immigration law, and any previous successes that demonstrate their ability to handle the role effectively.
  • Closing and Call to Action: Ends the letter with a strong summary of the candidate's qualifications, reiterates their interest in the position, and invites the hiring manager to schedule an interview or further discussion.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Knowledge of immigration law and procedures: Demonstrates the candidate's expertise and readiness to handle immigration cases effectively.
  • Multilingual capabilities: Facilitates communication with clients of diverse backgrounds and helps in understanding cultural nuances important for client relations.
  • Attention to detail: Crucial for accurately preparing and submitting complex legal documents that are vital in immigration processes.
  • Experience with a variety of immigration cases: Shows adaptability and depth of experience, from employment-based visas to asylum claims and family immigration matters.
  • Strong advocacy and negotiation skills: Essential for representing clients in front of immigration authorities and handling sensitive issues that may arise during the immigration process.
  • Cultural sensitivity and empathy: Important for building trust with clients undergoing stressful life transitions and navigating sensitive circumstances.

How to start your immigration lawyer cover letter: with a greeting, of course

Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?

We sure have news for you! Your immigration lawyer cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.

Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.

Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.

"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your immigration lawyer cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Law Firm/Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms./Dr.] [Last Name],
  • Dear [Position Title] Search Committee,
  • Respected [Position Title],
  • Esteemed Colleagues,

How to start your immigration lawyer cover letter introduction

The opening paragraph of your immigration lawyer cover letter can seem like a real enigma.

Where do you start writing ?

In your immigration lawyer cover letter introduction, focus on yourself by stating what:

  • gets you motivated and excited about the role;
  • you like best about the company, from culture to awards.

Write no more than two sentences, which are both authentic and show your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

The middle or body of your immigration lawyer cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story

Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your immigration lawyer cover letter, it's time to get down to business .

Hear us out, the body of your immigration lawyer cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.

Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.

Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.

Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.

In the undertones of your story or immigration lawyer cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.

Finishing off your immigration lawyer cover letter with what matters most

So far, you've done a fantastic job in tailoring your immigration lawyer cover letter for the role and recruiter.

Your final opportunity to make a good impression is your closing paragraph.

And, no, a "Sincerely yours" just won't do, as it sounds too vague and impersonal.

End your immigration lawyer cover letter with the future in mind.

So, if you get this opportunity, what do you plan to achieve? Be as specific, as possible, of what value you'd bring to the organization.

You could also thank recruiters for their interest in your profile and prompt for follow-up actions (and organizing your first interview).

The zero experience immigration lawyer cover letter: shifting the focus to your unique value

Don't worry if you have no conventional professional experience . Within your whole experience, there's plenty more you can write about in your immigration lawyer cover letter.

Take, for example, your biggest achievement or award - dedicate your cover letter body to describe it and the job-relevant skills you've learned.

Your professional ambitions could also take center stage. Describe what you plan on achieving in the next five to ten years and the efforts you're making towards your dreams.

Key takeaways

Winning recruiters over shouldn't be difficult if you use your immigration lawyer cover letter to tell a story that:

  • Is personalized by greeting your readers and focusing on key job skills greets;
  • Isn't spread all over the place, but instead focuses on one key achievement and selling your value as a professional;
  • Introduces your enthusiasm for the role, passion for the job, or creativity in communication;
  • Is also visually appealing - meeting the best HR practices;
  • Ends with a nod to the future and how you envision your growth, as part of the company.
