Institute of Technology Carlow has a range of high quality postgraduate programmes that offer suitably qualified primary degree holders (NFQ level 8) exciting opportunities to progress to higher awards (Higher Diploma, Masters and Doctoral degrees). These opportunities may be undertaken by research and thesis, or through taught programmes. Programmes are available in full-time and/or part-time modes across our three main campuses in Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow.

Higher Diplomas (NFQ Level 8-60 credits) and Postgraduate Diplomas (NFQ Level 9-60 credits)

Entry requirements for Postgraduate Diplomas are typically the same as for the Masters programme but are completed at NFQ Level 9 and require completion of just 60 credits. Students undertake the same subjects as Masters students in that stream until they complete their diploma. Postgraduate Diplomas are also offered as an exit award, should a student leave their Masters programme prior to completion.

Masters Degree (NFQ Level 9)

Institute of Technology Carlow offers two types of Masters degree programme: taught Masters programmes and research Masters programmes.

The taught Masters degree is awarded following the completion of a programme of one to two years duration (typically 90 ECTS credits). Entry to a taught programme leading to a Masters award is typically for holders of Honours Bachelor degrees. In certain circumstances, entry to such programmes may be considered for holders of Ordinary Bachelor Degrees or equivalent.

Research Masters Degree programmes are typically of two years duration (typically 90 ECTS credits) where learners undertake a substantial piece of research. The project is carried out under the guidance of an experienced supervisor. Learning outcomes at this level relate to the demonstration of knowledge and understanding at the forefront of a field of learning.  Outcomes relate to the application of knowledge, understanding and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar contexts related to the field of study. The outcomes are associated with an ability to integrate knowledge, handle complexity and formulate judgements.

An Irish Masters Degree is compatible with completion of the Bologna Second Cycle.

PhD or Doctoral Degree (NFQ Level 10)

A PhD (NFQ Level 10) or doctoral programme should take from three to four years (full-time) to complete. ECTS credits are used in doctoral programmes for taught elements only. Learning outcomes at this level relate to the discovery and development of new knowledge and skills and delivering findings at the frontiers of knowledge and application. Further outcomes at this level relate to specialist skills and transferable skills required for managing, such as the ability to critique   and develop organisational structure and initiate change. Postgraduate students may have to pass a series of examinations and/or assessments in order to progress through their course and may be required to attend for interview as part of the application process.

The Irish Doctoral Degree is compatible with completion of the Bologna Third Cycle.

• International students: Send your official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) directly to the Carlow Admissions Office.
• We will help you retrieve your official transcripts by requesting them from all of your previous schools.
• If requested, complete an interview with the program director.
• Once your application is submitted, check the Bridge to Carlow portal regularly for updates about your application status. Students typically receive an admission decision within two weeks of submitting their applications.
• Once you have been accepted, complete the enrollment reply form in the Bridge to Carlow portal to secure your place.
• Connect with an enrollment counselor by calling 855-511-6450 to determine next steps and have any questions answered.

IT Carlow 'exceptionally proud' as online conferring of over 3,000 students commences

For the first time in its 50-year history, Institute of Technology (IT) Carlow today commenced the first of 11 virtual conferring ceremonies that will see more than 3,000 graduands conferred over the next seven days.

Addressing the graduands in a special virtual ceremony, IT Carlow said Dr Patricia Mulcahy said: “You now take your place as graduates of our institute, receiving internationally recognised awards that will stand the test of time and help equip you for all the opportunities that lie ahead. 

"I have no doubt that the knowledge, skills and attributes you have developed during your time with us will give you the tools to face the future with confidence. You have accomplished great things and you are going to accomplish even more."

Acknowledging the tremendous cooperation, innovation and generosity of spirit that has prevailed right across IT Carlow’s 10,000 strong community of students and staff since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Mulcahy confirmed that a celebratory event will be held at an appropriate time in the future.

“I look forward to the time when we can once again come together to celebrate your accomplishments and mark your achievement in the usual way, with handshakes and speeches,  with pomp and ceremony, and most importantly in one another’s company. Until then, know that we are exceptionally proud of each and every one of you. It has been our privilege to know you, to teach you and to learn from you," she said.

Dr Mulcahy said this year’s conferring ceremonies coincide with a significant moment for IT Carlow, as it marks 50 years since it first offered higher education programmes to learners in the South East and across the country.

“There have been many changes and achievements in the first half-century of our journey to becoming one of Ireland’s largest and most progressive institutes of technology and, in little more than a year’s time, a technological university. In reaching 50 years, we thank the people before us who made this possible and we look to the future as we continue to evolve and lead. We look forward to another 50 years of knowledge and innovation, of openness and engagement, and to the many successes that lie ahead for you and all our alumni," Dr Mulcahy said.

Welcoming the graduands and their families, John Moore, chair of the governing body of IT Carlow, told the graduands that they were about join the institute’s global alumni of almost 65,000 pursuing fulfilling careers around the world. He commended them on their contribution to the institute and spoke about the current challenging environment.

“As well as its challenges, the world you graduate into presents as much opportunity as ever. Earlier this year you, along with the staff of IT Carlow, demonstrated your ability to meet any challenge. The successful conclusion of your courses and your conferring today is a testament to that. So to all our 2020 graduands who will be conferred this year and to all the institute staff, thank you," Mr Moore said.

“We don't need to be physically together to be collectively proud and to celebrate your achievement and that is what we are doing today. As an IT Carlow graduate, you have an arsenal of attributes. Collectively and individually, you are equipped and able to face present and future challenges, common or personal, global or local. We look forward to your impact with confidence," Mr Moore added.

As part of the virtual conferring ceremony, graduands heard special recorded messages of encouragement and inspiration from the Oscar-nominated animator, producer and director Nora Twomey of Cartoon Saloon and from business leader Dr. David Dempsey, co-founder of Salesforce Europe and general manager at Salesforce Ireland where he leads a team of more than 1,800. 

The occasion also included a video vox pop of graduands from across the institute’s many programmes of study who spoke about what their years at IT Carlow meant to them.

The Healthcare Professional We Deserve

During COVID-19, healthcare workers and emergency responders reached a new level of acclaim in the public eye. As the pandemic wore on, doctors and nurses were seen performing selfless acts daily – putting themselves in harm’s way to help others. The refrain was “not all heroes wear capes,” yet one group of health professionals has been consistently compared to the Caped Crusader.   

Respiratory therapists specialize in assessment, treatment, and care of patients with breathing disorders. They work with patients taking their first breath, premature infants in the NICU, and with adult patients taking their final breath. In certain corners of the internet, they’re often called the “Batman of Healthcare,” because they get the signal, show up with their gadgets, save the day, then disappear, and no one knows their name. 

Despite their crucial role on the healthcare team, the profession is often less recognized compared to other more high-profile positions, such as nursing. Although less understood by the public, they are in high demand, with job growth much faster than average.  

Carlow has three tracks for students to become respiratory therapists and start working in the field quickly.  

• The new two-year Associate of Science track trains students to become Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) and work in all aspects of the profession, such as hospitals, clinics, diagnostic labs, pulmonary rehabilitation, and homecare.  
• The three-year Bachelor of Science track prepares respiratory therapists to move into leadership, management, education, or research roles. Unique in this field, this program offers an accelerated track which allows students to begin their careers fast. 
• The fully online RRT to BS Degree program is designed to provide working respiratory therapists the ability to advance their degree. 

Like most Carlow students , graduates of the Respiratory Therapy program tend to find employment immediately after graduation, either locally, nationally, or as a traveling respiratory therapist. Many enjoy the fast-paced, dynamic nature of the job, while finding gratification in diversity, collaborative teamwork, and helping patients breathe easier.  

We can only hope for a Grey’s Anatomy character to emerge and raise awareness of this vital profession. Until then, respiratory therapists will continue to stand in the shadows, working tirelessly while finding fulfillment in the impact of their work.
