The Best Moments at the 2023 Golden Globes

From Michelle Yeoh's acceptance speech to Rihanna's appearance, here's what you missed at the first awards show of 2023.

After a year off due to various controversies , the Golden Globes made their glamorous return last night . Hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael , who did not hold back in his opening monologue, the show proceeded with business as normal.

Here were T&C' s five favorite moments of the 2023 Golden Globes.

1. Michelle Yeoh's entire acceptance speech

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

Our September 2022 cover star Michelle Yeoh had the best speech of the night when she won for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Yeoh began, "I’m just going to stand here and take this all in. Forty years, not letting go of this."

She started to speak about her career, "As time went by — I turned 60 last year. And I think all of you women understand this as the days, the years, and the numbers get bigger, it seems like opportunities start to get smaller as well... Then along came the best gift, Everything Everywhere All at Once ."

As music started to play Yeoh her off, she said to the piano player, "Shut up, please. I can beat you up." She thanked her co-stars and directors the Daniels (a.k.a. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), before ending, "This is also for all the shoulders that I stand on, all who came before me who looks like me, and all who are going on this journey with me forward. So thank you for believing in us. Thank you. Thank you so much."

2. Ke Huy Quan's emotional speech

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

Yoeh's costar, Ke Huy Quan, also gave a beautiful speech, kicking off the evening. Quan said, "When I started my career as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , I felt so very lucky to have been chosen. As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer. No matter what I did, I would never surpass what I achieved as a kid."

He continued, "Thankfully more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid, and they gave me an opportunity to try again. Everything that has happened since has been unbelievable."

2. The Banshees of Inisherin 's Jenny the Donkey gets major shoutouts

banshees of inisherin

Colin Farell won Best Actor in a Musical Comedy for his role in dark Irish comedy The Banshees of Inisherin . "To work on this film, I never expect films to work or to find an audience and when they do, it's shocking to me," Farrell said. "I'm horrified by what's happened around Banshees over the last couple of months, in a thrilling kind of way."

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

A highlight of his speech? His shoutout to co-star Jenny the donkey. "Lastly, Jenny the donkey who is having an early retirement because fuck the the film business!" Farrell said. (In an earlier interview, Farrell joked to Empire "Jenny was tricky. It was her first film, but she acted like it was her 100th. She was kind of over it. Kind of jaded.")

Later in the evening, when Martin McDonagh won for Best Screenplay, he, too, thanked Jenny the donkey (and Minnie the horse), beginning his speech talking about her. "I was hoping Jenny might have been nominated tonight, but she’s a female donkey and it’s the Globes, so..." he jokes.

3. Rihanna appears!

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

After skipping the red carpet, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky quietly snuck into the ceremony ahead of the Best Original Song category. (Rihanna lost to RRR smash "Naatu Naatu.") Yet, Rihanna is Rihanna and her appearance—her first major event since the Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever red carpet in October—is definitely noteworthy.

Rihanna wore a custom Schiaparelli gown and jewelry from Cartier and Reza , and though she wasn't on the carpet, she absolutely made our best dressed list. She is set to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show in just under a month.

4. Jerrod Carmichael's outfit changes

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

Host Jerrod Carmichael wore not one, not two, but seven different looks throughout the course of the evening. And he looked fantastic in all of them.

Never let them tell you men's fashion is boring.

5. Jennifer Coolidge, queen of Monaco, thanks Mike White, who gets emotional and drunk

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

The White Lotus star had two speeches during the evening—during a presentation of an award, and during her acceptance speech. Both were rambling and wonderful, full of little tidbits and Coolidge's clear joy at the evening and gratitude to Mike White.

In her acceptance speech, she talks about thinking she was going to be Queen of Monaco (Monaco has no queen, only a reigning prince and princess: Prince Albert and Princess Charlene), and how her neighbors are talking to her again.

Though she may not be in season three of The White Lotus , she is definitely having her moment now.

nbc's 80th annual golden globe awards show

When Mike White appeared, he shared he was too drunk to give his speech in Italian—and so emotional over Jennifer Coolidge's speech, so it was brief and funny. He told the audience, "I know you all passed on this show so it's very gratifying to have this moment." Go Mike White!

Powerful speeches galore.

Ke Huy Quan brought the emotion when accepting the award for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture for his role as Waymond Wang in "Everything Everywhere All at Once."

"I was raised to never forget where I came from, and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity. I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight. Steven, thank you!" Quan began. "When I started my career as a child actor [playing Short Round] in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,' I felt so very lucky to have been chosen."

"As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer, that no matter what I did I would never surpass what I achieved as a kid," Quan, who also starred as Data in "The Goonies," continued, thanking "Everything Everywhere All at Once" co-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for giving him "an opportunity to try again."

MORE: Golden Globes red carpet fashion is back! See what stars wore for this year's affair

Angela Bassett, who won best performance by an actress in a supporting role in any motion picture for her role as Queen Ramonda in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," recalled her first Golden Globe win for "What's Love Got to Do With It" on Jan. 22, 1994.

"The late Toni Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance just waiting for you to order its destiny. But in order for that destiny to manifest, I think that it requires courage to have faith, it requires patience … and it requires a true sense of yourself," she began.

Bassett also spoke about late "Black Panther" star Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43.

"We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed, and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman," she said. "We have joy in knowing that, well, with this historic 'Black Panther' series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like beyond, behind and in front of the camera."

After he won the Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture (drama), Austin Butler took the stage and thanked those with whom he worked on the set of "Elvis," including director Baz Luhrmann and actor Tom Hanks.

The actor also went on to thank the Presley family, including Lisa Marie Presley and the king of rock 'n' roll himself, Elvis Presley.

"Elvis Presley -- you are an icon and a rebel," Butler said. "I love you so much, thank you. You are remembered and I will never forget. Thank you!"

At the end of his speech, he thanked his family and paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, who died of cancer in 2014.

"I want to thank my mom who I know is smiling down right now," he said. "Mama, I love you so much. Thank you for sacrificing so much for me."

Host Jerrod Carmichael addresses the Golden Globes' previous lack of diversity

Jerrod Carmichael kicked off the 80th Golden Globes by putting the show's issues with diversity front and center.

"I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here because I'm Black," the comedian said in his opening monologue.

"I'll catch everyone in the room up, if you settle down a bit," he went on. "I'll tell you what's been going on. This show did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which I won't say they were a racist organization -- but they didn't have a single Black member until George Floyd died -- so do with that information what you will."

Carmichael, who said that he was paid $500,000 for hosting this year's show, ended his monologue by shifting the focus to how the Golden Globes should be a night of celebration.

"Regardless of whatever Hollywood Foreign Press Association's past may be, this is an evening where we get to celebrate," Carmichael added. "I think this industry deserves evenings like these. I'm happy you all are here."

Toward the end of the show, HFPA president Helen Hoehne addressed what she called "momentous change" within the organization.

"We are proud of the work we have done, the progress we've made and the journey we are on," Hoehne said. "We commit to continue strengthening our partnership with Hollywood and with the world to celebrate ... the best in film and television."

She added, "We will continue to support groups that amplify a variety of voices and continue to add representation to our organization from around the world, as we did this past year."

Ryan murphy honored with the carol burnett award.

"Pose" star Billy Porter took the stage to share a powerful introduction for Ryan Murphy, praising Murphy for his incredible impact in revolutionizing television.

"Prolific, visionary, game-changer, trailblazer, champion of truth, fearless, boss man, workaholic, ally, mentor, friend -- there aren't enough words in the English language for me to convey what you mean to me," Porter said in his introduction.

The acclaimed screenwriter, producer and director then took to the stage to express his gratitude for the honor and share a few acknowledgements of his own.

First, he commended Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who made history in 2022 when she won the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama series for "Pose," becoming the first transgender actress to win a Golden Globe.

Murphy then spoke about how receiving the Carol Burnett Award has allowed him to "reflect on what a lifetime of achievement really is." He said that the key to getting there is by "being fearless."

Continuing to acknowledge figures whom he described as his "heroes," Murphy addressed Porter's impact, describing him as "one of the most iconic actors of his generation."

Murphy also praised Niecy Nash, who he said "chose love, not fear" when she married Jessica Betts. He said Nash was told "she couldn't, shouldn't do that" and that she "might never work again, her community and her industry would abandon her."

He called actor Matt Bomer an "action hero in life" who has "defied the ridiculous rules that have been in place for almost a century" and said actor Jeremy Pope was told to "deny who he was -- but Jeremy refused to hide." Murphy called Pope "the future."

Murphy said he was dedicating his speech to the names he mentioned "to make a point of hope and progress."

"When I was a young person at home in the '70s watching 'The Carol Burnett Show,' I never ever saw a person like me getting an award -- or even being a character on a TV show," he said. "It's hard being an LGBTQ kid in America, in fact, all over the world, then and now."

best speeches golden globes

He continued, "You are often told you will never become anything, you have to hide your light to survive. But for those kids watching, tonight I offer up MJ, and Billy, and Niecy, and Matt, and Jeremy as examples of possibility. There is a way forward -- use them as your north stars."

Murphy is the fourth recipient of the HFPA's Carol Burnett Award. Previous recipients include Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres and Norman Lear.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivers remarks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed the audience at the awards show.

Actor Sean Penn introduced a video message from Zelenskyy.

"The war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning," Zelenskyy said. "And it is already clear who will win."

Zelenskyy thanked "the free people of the free world, those who united around the support of the free Ukrainian people." He also said "there will be no third World War. It is not a trilogy."

Russian forces invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

Penn visited Ukraine in November 2022 and presented Zelenskyy with one of his two Academy Awards statuettes, calling it a "symbolic silly thing" and telling the president to return it to him in Malibu after Ukraine wins against Russia.

Zelenskyy called the gesture "a symbol of faith in the victor of our country" and presented Penn with a special award called "the Order of Merit of the III degree."

This isn't the first time Zelenskyy has addressed the audience of an awards show. In April 2022, just weeks after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Zelenskyy spoke about the war in a video message at the 2022 Grammys .

Actor Eddie Murphy accepts Cecil B. DeMille Award

Eddie Murphy took the stage during the show to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his outstanding contributions to entertainment.

The six-time Golden Globe nominee, who is known for his roles in "The Nutty Professor," "Coming to America," "Dreamgirls" -- for which he won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture in 2007 -- and many others, thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and his family.

"I've been in show business for 46 years and I've been in the movie business for 41 years," Murphy said. "So this has been a long time in the making and it's greatly appreciated."

The Best and Worst Moments of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards

T he 81st Golden Globes ushered in the 2024 awards season on Sunday, with all eyes locked on the battle between the biggest box office hits of the past year: Barbie and Oppenheimer . The Margot Robbie-led Barbie was the most-nominated film of the night with 9 nominations, making it the second most-nominated film in the award show’s history, while Oppenheimer secured eight nods. Both films were credited with helping revive a global box office that was still recovering from a pandemic-related slump, and tonight, they were rewarded for their efforts.

By the evening's end, Oppenheimer had the edge, having taken home not only Best Motion Picture - Drama while Barbie was edged out in the Comedy or Musical category b y Poor Things , but also Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey, Jr., and Best Score for Ludwig Göransson. All of this gives the movie an edge as awards season looks ahead to the Oscars in March.

In TV, critical darling Succession cemented its place as one of the greatest modern dramas with its final season on HBO, becoming the most-nominated television show of the night, with nine nods. Other top nominated fan favorites include The Bear , Only Murders in the Building,The Crown , The Last of Us , and many more. Succession took home the top prize for TV drama, along with statues for Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Macfadyen; Beef and The Bear both fared well, too. Television will be celebrated again in just over a week at the Emmys, postponed due to the Hollywood strikes. As voting closed back in August, tonight's results won't have any bearing on those races.

Comedian Jo Koy hosted the event with  just two weeks to prepare —and made note of that in his opening monologue. Last year, Jerrod Carmichael’s monologue was a point of conversation after he called out  the Hollywood Foreign Press Association out on their lack of diversity  in his opening monologue. Koy’s speech did not go over well on social media, with many critics posting their reactions.

Before the ceremony began, the Golden Globes red carpet prompted a bit of a mishap online when The Hollywood Reporter mistook Justin Hartley for Glen Powell in a since-deleted tweet. Powell was a good sport about it:

I think this is the perfect time to announce that ⁦ @justinhartley ⁩ and I will be starring in the most boring body-swap movie of all time. pic.twitter.com/3WWYwKacar — Glen Powell (@glenpowell) January 8, 2024

Read on for our highlights of the night.

Surprise (but well-deserved) win: Da’Vine Joy Randolph

The first award of the night was for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and the nominations were stacked: Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, Julianne Moore, Jodie Foster, and Rosamund Pike. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who has received high acclaim for her performance in The Holdovers , took home the award. She gave a heartfelt speech and gave love to her character: “Oh Mary you have changed my life. You have made me feel seen in so many ways that I have never imagined. I hope I help you all find your own inner Mary because there's a little bit of her in all of you.”

A win we love to see: A Beef sweep

Netflix’s limited series Beef was an instant success, finding a large audience. The lead performances from Ali Wong and Steven Yeun were lauded by critics, so it’s no surprise the two leads took home awards for Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made For Television, giving us a beef sweep.

Most charming acceptance speech: Ayo Edebiri

When Ayo Edebiri took the stage to accept the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical, or Comedy, she not only made Ireland proud —she delivered one of the most charming speeches of the night. Edebiri won her first Golden Globe with her first nomination, for her performance in The Bear and was reasonably frazzled when she got on stage. She joked as she usually does, but made sure to thank her managers’ and agents’ assistants. And as she was leaving, she apologized for leaving anyone out: “If I forgot to thank you, I’m sorry…unless you were mean or something. Okay, bye!”

Most warranted reaction to a joke: Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift made an appearance at the Golden Globes as The Eras Tour movie was nominated for the show's new box office recognition category and, of course, became the most talked about person there (except, maybe, for Timothée Chalamet and Kendall Jenner ). Koy made a joke about the NFL constantly cutting to Swift when she shows up to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce, a tight end on the Kansas City Chiefs at his games. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” The camera then panned to Swift, who seemed unamused and took a sip of her drink.

Surprise win: Anatomy of a Fall wins for Best Screenplay

Anyone expecting Barbie or Oppenheimer to take home all the awards they’re nominated for may want to think again. Justine Triet and her partner Arthur Harari won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture for Anatomy of a Fall , beating both films in the category, and Triet accepted the Golden Globe on their behalf.

Worst: Presenter banter is hard to watch

It seems like even the most seasoned actors had a tough time making onstage banter look natural. Notably, Ray Romano and Kerri Russell awkwardly presented the award for Best Supporting Male Actor in Television. But they aren’t the only ones whose jokes didn't land—while the biggest stars in Hollywood tried to be relatable and funny, their attempts fell flat. Maybe they should have stuck to the prompter and presented the awards.

Best presenters: Andra Day and Jon Batiste

After several boring presenters, Andra Day and Jon Batiste saved the night when they  presented the award for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for a Motion Picture. Their natural banter and chemistry playing off each other made their moment a joy to watch—prompting many online to suggest they host the Golden Globes next year.

can Andra Day and Jon Batiste be the hosts next year? #GoldenGlobes — Mark (@106th) January 8, 2024

Worst new categories: stand-up comedians and box office achievements

The 2024 Golden Globes saw the addition of two new categories—Best Performance in a Stand-Up Comedy on Television and the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement—that have not gone over so well with audiences. Comedian Rickey Gervais won in the stand-up category; in response, the New York Times television critic wrote the category “feels like a weird sham; there’s just no argument that these were the best specials, only that they were the specials released by the most-famous comedians.” Barbie , the highest-grossing movie of 2023, won the award for cinematic and box office achievement, a category that seems to be rewarding a movie for… making the most money? Doesn’t really make sense, but OK. At least we got a sweet moment of the principal cast on stage.

Golden Globes

Most deserved (almost) final send-off: Succession

Succession took home the biggest awards in the categories it was nominated for, winning four in total: Best Television Series, Drama; Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama for Sarah Snook; Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama for Kieran Culkim; and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Supporting Role for Matthew Macfadyen. Going out with a bang for the show’s final season, we won’t see this group together on-stage winning awards after the Emmys later this month.

Best historic win: Lily Gladstone becomes first Indigenous Best Actress winner

Lily Gladstone is a favorite in the Oscars Best Actress race along with Emma Stone (who won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for Poor Things —unlike the Academy Awards, the Globes divvy their movie awards up by genre). Tonight, Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes and became the first Native American woman to win an award in the Best Actress category, the New York Times reports . At the beginning of her speech, she spoke in the Blackfoot language and acknowledged the history-making win. “I am so honored to have been entrusted with this story that belongs to the Osage nation, and so deeply grateful to the Golden Globes for seeing me, and our film which means so much to Native American and Indigenous people around the world,” she said in her speech. “This is a historic win; it doesn’t just belong to me,” she added. “I am holding it right now, I am holding it with all of my beautiful sisters in the film, at this table over here and my mother [in the film] Tantoo Cardinal, standing on all your shoulders.”

Biggest boost for the Oscars: Oppenheimer

Given that the Golden Globes are the first major televised awards show of the season, they can help set the tone for what will do well at the Academy Awards. With most of the focus being on the face-off between Barbie and Oppenheimer , the latter seems to be in a better position to win big at the Oscars after this evening. The historical drama about the making of the atomic bomb took home five awards at the Golden Globes tonight, including the biggest award of the night—Best Picture, Drama. Cillian Murphy also won for Best Actor in a Drama and Christopher Nolan nabbed the Best Director prize. The Oscar nominations will be announced on Jan. 23, after which point the major races will come into clearer view.

Golden Globes 2023: Winners, best moments and highlights

What you need to know about the 80th golden globe awards.

  • The awards show was back on television this year. NBC opted not to air the 2022 ceremony in the wake of mounting criticism surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that puts on the event.
  • During Tuesday's show, HFPA President Helen Hoehne alluded to the changes the organization has made to improve the diversity of its membership. “We commit to continue strengthening our partnership with Hollywood and with the worldwide fans who celebrate the best on film and television," she said. "We will continue to support groups that amplify a variety of voices and continue to add representation to our organization from around the world as we did this past year."
  • Host Jerrod Carmichael also touched on the HFPA's lack of diversity in his opening monologue . "I'm here because I'm Black," he said in reference to last year's controversy. The association "did not have a single Black member until George Floyd died," Carmichael said. Twitter users appeared impressed with Carmichael's remarks — his name trended on Twitter after the monologue.
  • Brendan Fraser , nominated for best actor, motion picture, in “The Whale,” pledged never to return to the event after he alleged he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, a former president of the group behind the show. Berk denies the allegation. Other stars showed up in full force Tuesday.
  • So what shows and movies won big? On the film side, “ The Banshees of Inisherin ” took home the award for best picture, musical or comedy. It was the most nominated film at the Golden Globes, with eight nods. The final award of the night — best motion picture, drama — went to Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical film "The Fabelmans." The final award of the night — best motion picture, drama — went to Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical film "The Fabelmans."

The film documents a Jewish family, based on Spielberg's own, and the beginning of his love of moviemaking. Spielberg recalled a bit of the beginning of his career in his speech.

"I was John Cassavetes' PA on one of his movies ... and that's why I treat my PAs so kindly, because I know what it feels like," he said, referring to production assistants.

He thanked his cast and crew and joked about why he wanted to keep his acceptance speech short.

"My office is on the Universal lot, and I want to stay on the Universal lot," he said. "I don't want to be the reason this goes too far into the 11:30 p.m. news in New York City."

"When I was starting out, I really felt that I had to pretend to present as a woman in order to find success in this industry ... it wasn't sustainable," they said. "I stopped pretending and, weirdly, it was at that point I got nominated for best actress at the Golden Globes."

Margot Robbie seems ready for 'Barbie'

"Babylon" star Margot Robbie showed up on the red carpet in a dress perfect for her Barbie herself, and opened up just a little about her role in the upcoming movie.

Letitia Wright is 'manifesting' a third 'Black Panther' film

"We need a little bit of a break. We need to regroup and Ryan [Coogler] needs to get back into the lab," Wright, who plays Shuri in the films, said. "So, you know, it's gonna take awhile, but really excited for you guys to see that."

Wright also said she was "really excited but really sad" to take on the Black Panther title following Chadwick Boseman's death in 2020.

"We honor him by just celebrating tonight," she told Variety.

Stephanie Hsu's shares reac to reading 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' script

Stephanie Hsu, of “Everything Everywhere All At Once," shared her first reaction to reading the script of the nominated, critically acclaimed film.

"It was the same sensation of what you experience in the film," she told Variety on the Globes carpet. "As crazy as it is, it still somehow makes sense kind of like life, kind of like the complexity of a mother-daughter relationship. It was as wild as it was completely centered and logical."

Daisy Edgar-Jones is also a Swiftie and 'Wednesday' stan

Daisy Edgar-Jones has returned to the Golden Globes as a nominee, but also a fangirl.

Speaking on E!'s red carpet, Jones told Cox she's currently a big fan of Netflix's "Wednesday" series (which was just renewed for a second season). She also effortlessly tied her Taylor Swift obsession with her nominated movie, "Where the Crawdads Sing."

"Speaking of obsession, I hear you're obsessed with Taylor Swift...What is your favorite era of Taylor Swift?" Cox asked.

"I personally love 'Carolina,' which she did for our film," Jones said. "I think I'm loving her latest stuff for sure."

F. Murray Abraham shares how he really felt about 'White Lotus' finale

On the Golden Globes red carpet, nominee and “White Lotus” star F. Murray Abraham told Variety how he reacted to *SPOILER ALERT* the on-screen death of his co-star Jennifer Coolidge’s character Tanya in the “White Lotus” season two finale.

“I really hated it because I love her so much. I mean who doesn’t, right? Everybody loves Tanya, right?" the actor said. "Maybe she’ll come back as a ghost."

Abraham is nominated for best supporting actor — TV movie/limited category.

Billy Porter's favorite red carpet moment is his Oscar Dress

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 10: Billy Porter attends the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton on January 10, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.

"I just felt like Cinderella at the ball," Billy Porter told Variety on carpet.

"Just coming out in a way that I never conceived possible. I never thought that I would ever be able to show up just as me and that I would be enough in these spaces."

Eddie Redmayne stuns in 'silk origami number' by Valentino

Eddie Redmayne dressed to impress Laverne Cox, who complimented the actor for his "whimsical" take on the black suit.

Redmayne wore a very large flower, what appeared to be a rosette, on his blazer. He told Cox some people asked if it was handmade but he insisted that it was a beautiful “silk origami number” by Valentino.

Before he moved along, Cox took a moment to share a heartfelt moment with the actor.

"Thank you for your continued support of the trans community, it means the world to me," Cox said.

Redmayne is nominated for best supporting actor in a motion picture for his role in "The Good Nurse."

James Cameron is over streaming

James Cameron, who is nominated as best director for "Avatar: The Way of Water," which is also nominated for best picture — drama, championed going to the movies on Tuesday.

“We need to go to movie theaters and have that experience," he told Variety on the Golden Globes carpet. "Enough with the streaming already!”

Jamie Lee Curtis doesn't know which Golden Globe her mom won

Self-proclaimed "OG Nepo Baby," Jamie Lee Curtis, had "no idea" she was nominated for the same award her mother, Janet Leigh, won in 1961, she told Variety on the carpet.

Leigh won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in “Psycho” in 1961.

We'll see if Curtis can add a second statue in that category to her family's mantle tonight.

It’s carpet time!

E’s kicking off its awards show now....

What we're keeping an eye on tonight

Here's what some people on our live blogging team are looking out for this evening.

Kaetlyn Liddy, newsroom coordinator : I’ll be watching Jennifer Coolidge and her “White Lotus” stars closely to see if HBO's second season will match the first in critical acclaim. If it were up to me, Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza would tie for the Globe based on the Twitter content their performances inspired alone.

Matt Lavietes, NBC Out reporter : I’m most excited to see if gay icon Coolidge  finally  gets the chance to finish the iconic winning speech she attempted to give at the Emmys. I’m also very curious to see how Emma D’Arcy — who uses they/them pronouns — would react if they win the globe for best performance by an actress in a television series, given they do not identify as female.

Claretta Bellamy, NBCBLK News Fellow: I’m rooting for the “Woman King” herself Viola Davis for best performance by an actress in a motion picture — drama, partly because I just read her inspiring book and also because the movie left me in happy tears. I’m also a Black Panther fangirl, so, Wakanda Forever!

Doha Madani, senior breaking news reporter/resident Taylor Swift expert : I’m looking to see whether Swift takes home the globe for best song for “Carolina,” a sign that would place her as a potential front-runner for an Oscar in the coming months. I am also a world-class hater and am rooting for an “Avatar” loss.

Kalhan Rosenblatt, culture & trends reporter/Gaga stan: There are pop stars vying for the best original song award, and there is a pop rivalry in the NBC News newsroom. While Doha is rooting for Swift, I’ll be rooting for Lady Gaga to take home the award for her “Top Gun: Maverick” song “Hold My Hand.” Fun fact: Gaga previously won the award for “Shallow” in 2019 and Swift presented her with the award that year.

Anahita Pardiwalla, social storytelling editor : I'm hoping Rihanna's Golden Globes nomination in the best original song category will inspire her to release new music we’ve all so (im)patiently been waiting for.

Uwa Ede-Osifo, news associate : As a Quinta Brunson stan from her early Buzzfeed days, I’m watching to see if “Abbott Elementary” will continue earning earn more well-deserved accolades.

Daysia Tolentino , culture & trends reporter : I wouldn’t be surprised if fan-favorite “Abbott Elementary” won in the best television series, musical or comedy. But I think the hype for “The Bear” or even “Wednesday” could make it a tough decision.

Crystal Minaya, editorial assistant :   I am rooting for Austin Butler who is nominated best actor for his role in “Elvis." Let’s face it: We all fell in love with his glamorous and stunning take on the late singer in the Baz Luhrmann-directed film.

Brahmjot Kaur, NBC Asian America reporter, NBCU Academy Embed : I’m crossing my fingers tight for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” taking home the award for best picture in a musical/comedy! Hot dog fingers, the multiverse and a star-studded cast — what more can you ask for?

Saba Hamedy, culture & trends editor: Awards ceremonies often have their fair share of political moments — sometimes via people’s fashion choices, other times in winners’ speeches. I'm wondering whether we'll see any public support for the people of Iran tonight. The country has been gripped by protests since the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after she was detained by the government’s morality police.

It's Brendan Fraser's first nomination, but he swore off the Golden Globes

Brendan Fraser is up for his very first Golden Globe tonight, a best actor nomination for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale." But his dark history with the HFPA will keep him from attending tonight.

Fraser alleges that he was assaulted by HFPA’s former president Philip Berk in the summer of 2003. He detailed the incident in a 2018 GQ interview, saying it made him feel "ill." Berk denied the allegation.

In a subsequent GQ interview last year , Fraser vowed that if he would not attend this year's ceremony even if he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” he said.

"The Whale" has been lauded as a tremendous return to film for Fraser, whose portrayal of a 600-pound gay man confined to a wheelchair earned him a six-minute standing ovation the Venice Film Festival in September. The actor was seen crying as he received accolades from his industry peers.

There are once again zero female director nominees

best speeches golden globes

Saba Hamedy

The HFPA voting body didn't nominate any women for the best director category, a move which generated backlash online.

Some of the talented female directors who were snubbed: Sarah Polley ("Women Talking"); Gina Prince-Bythewood ("The Woman King"); Charlotte Wells ("Aftersun"); and Chinonye Chukwu ("Till").

It's not the first time the Globes have been called out for this. Back in 2018, when actor Natalie Portman was presenting the award for best director alongside Ron Howard, she highlighted a similar lack of representation in the list of nominees. Before announcing their names, she said , “And here are the all male nominees."

That same year, Barbra Streisand, who was also presenting, lamented on the the lack of women honored in the category.

“We need more women directors and more women to be nominated for best director," she said . "There are so many films out there that are so good directed by women.”

Speaking of 'Tar' ...

While many in the LGBTQ world may be rooting for Cate Blanchett to win best actress for her performance as an abrasive conductor in “Tár,” not everyone is happy with it.

Marin Alsop, who was name-checked in “Tár,” said the critically acclaimed film offended her “as a woman ... as a conductor ... as a lesbian.”

NBC Out recently wrote about why Alsop, the world’s best-known female conductor, is displeased with the film.

Many queer eyes are on “Tár” tonight, nominated for best motion picture, best screenplay and best actress.

In particular Cate Blanchett, a lesbian icon, has received critical acclaim for her explosive performance as the fictional conductor Lydia Tár. The unlikeable Tár spends much of the film humiliating students, flirting with younger women and hiding evidence of her wrongdoings.

ICYMI: A long list of nominees

In case you're in need of a refresher, here's a look at the nominees this year .

On the movies side, Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin," leads the pack of nominees with eight nods. On the TV side, ABC’s breakout sitcom “Abbott Elementary” leads with five nods.

As NBC recently reported , LGBTQ people, both real and fictional, will be front and center at the awards show. And Latinos are represented in about half the award categories in this year’s Golden Globes . Nominees include Selena Gomez, Jenna Ortega, Aubrey Plaza, Diego Calva and others.

A sneak peak at the seating chart

The Golden Globes official Twitter account on Monday shared a look at tonight's seating chart.

"Can you spot all the names?" the account wrote in its tweet. Billy Porter, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie were among the printed names in the video.

Welp, it's raining in L.A.

Turns out it's not always sunny in Los Angeles. Today's forecast is a high of 60 degrees and some rain.

That means you'll see tents covering the red carpet at the The Beverly Hilton, where the Golden Globes ceremony takes place.

“This weather dealt us a hand,” the Globes executive producer and showrunner Dionne Harmon  told Variety . “You’ll be enclosed in a big tent, so no one should be worried. They will get out of their car to a dry, warm place.”

Stay dry out there!

Event staff clear water from the carpet before the start of the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Oh my God they're (celebrities) back again

It seems the Golden Globes will be a star-studded affair once again.

Ahead of Tuesday's ceremony, the HFPA announced a slew of celebs who will attend this year's awards. The list of presenters is almost too long to share in a blog post.

TLDR: You can expect to see some of your favorites on stage presenting and on the red carpet showing off their fabulous attire.

Host Jerrod Carmichael is ready for the big night

Jerrod Carmichael, who  won an Emmy Award  last year for his HBO stand-up special “Rothaniel," is taking on the role as this year's host.

Last year, he generated praise for his special, in which he came out. He also created the sitcom “The Carmichael Show,” which ran for three seasons on NBC.

He'll be the first to host since Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the stage in 2021. Last year’s Globes were not shown live.

Here’s one of the promo clips.

The Golden Globes controversy, explained

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization that puts on the Golden Globes, has been  intensely criticized  in recent years for the lack of racial diversity among its voting members and various ethical concerns.

The organization had no Black voting members, the Los Angeles Times reported last February. The allegations of ethical lapses within the HFPA were  detailed by the L.A. Times in its exposé, which got widespread attention in the entertainment industry.

So ... last year, NBC, which has been the longtime TV home of the ceremony, decided not to televise it . The show went on, quietly and without much fanfare. (There wasn't even a red carpet!) Variety described it as "the strangest Golden Globes Ceremony ever," where "not one famous face, top executive or notable publicity rep could be spotted." There was just a small audience in-person, and winners were announced on social media.

In September, HFPA announced it has added 103 new voters to the group that oversees the Globes. Now, according to Variety, "the voting body overall is made up of 200 members that are 52% female and 51.5% “racially and ethnically diverse” with 19.5% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black and 10% Middle Eastern members. The statement says that the voting body also includes individuals who self-identify as LGBTQIA+."

That same month, NBC confirmed the 2023 show will air once again. But the question remains: Will Hollywood embrace it again? It's unclear, but the list of stars set to attend tonight's ceremony is seemingly long . Perhaps longer than initially expected, given that many actors didn't really acknowledge their nominations .

9 Best Golden Globes Moments: Michelle Yeoh Refuses to Be Played Off, Jennifer Coolidge Makes Mike White Cry

The telecast kicked off with a shockingly frank monologue from host Jerrod Carmichael

From left to right: Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Coolidge and Ke Huy Quan at the 2023 Golden Globes

The Golden Globes returned with its 80th ceremony this year, and host Jerrod Carmichael did not hold back with both criticism of the HFPA and jokes that left the audience stunned . But while uncertainty preceded the return of the Golden Globes, this year’s telecast was not without its moments.

Emotional acceptance speeches flowed from “Everything Everywhere All At Once” stars Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh as well as “The White Lotus” dynamic duo Jennifer Coolidge and Mike White. Musician Rihanna received multiple shoutouts. Ryan Murphy used his platform of accepting the Carol Burnett Award to shoutout LGBTQ+ professionals with whom he has worked throughout his career. Steven Spielberg gave a heartfelt acceptance speech for his Best Director win for the autobiographical “The Fablemans.” Colin Farrell gave a well-deserved shoutout to Jenny the donkey from “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and Volodymyr Zelenskyy was honored by Sean Penn before giving a rallying speech about the situation in Ukraine.

Jerrod Carmichael’s Monologue

Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael wasted no time in addressing the controversy surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the embattled organization behind the Golden Globes, by kicking off the night by saying “I’m here ’cause I’m Black.” The comedian certainly had his fun poking at the organization’s previous failures, stunning audience members with remarks like “I won’t say they were racist, but they didn’t have a single Black member since George Floyd died.”

After thoroughly roasting the HFPA, Carmichael redirected the night’s attention to the wide range of talent within the room. “I look out into this room and I see a lot of talented people, like people that I admire people that I would like to be like and people that I’m jealous of, and people that are actually really incredible artists,” he said. “Regardless of whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s past may be, this is an evening where we get to celebrate.”

Ke Huy Quan Thanks His “Temple of Doom” Director Steven Spielberg

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” actor Ke Huy Quan’s emotional acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor for a Motion Picture kicked off the night with some tears.

“I was raised to never forget where I came from, to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” Quan said. “I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight. Steven, thank you. When I started my career as a child actor in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,’ I felt so very lucky to have been chosen. As I grew older, I started to wonder it that was it, if that was just luck.”

“For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer — that no matter what I did, I would never surpass what I did as a kid,” he continued, singling out “Everything Everywhere” directing duo Daniels. “Thankfully, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid. And they gave me an opportunity to try again.”

Angela Bassett Honors Chadwick Boseman

After making history as the first performer to win a Golden Globe in an acting category for their role in a Marvel film, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” actor Angela Bassett honored the late Chadwick Boseman for his iconic legacy as his absence was felt in the room. “We mourned, we loved, we healed and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman,” she said as she accepted her award for Best Performance by an actress in a supporting role in any motion picture. “We have joy in knowing that with this historic ‘Black Panther’ series, it is part of his legacy he helped lead us to, we showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like beyond, behind and in front of the camera.”

Shouting Out Rihanna

Though she didn’t win for Best Original Song with “Lift Me Up” in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Rihanna received multiple shoutouts from her contemporaries. Niecy Nash-Betts took her chance to tell the songstress that she dressed up as her for Halloween. Jerrod Carmichael took a moment to tell the musician “Take your time” on that album and to ignore the online haters. And Billy Porter piggybacked on Niecy Nash-Betts’ shoutout, saying, “If I believed in Halloween I would dress up as Rihanna as well.”

Colin Farrell Praises Jenny the Donkey

Right before his acceptance of the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Colin Farrell told Ana De Armas, who presented him with the award, that he cried himself to sleep watching her in “Blonde” (2022). He also gave Jenny the donkey a shoutout for her rise to fame through this film, and then he chastised Barry Keoghan for eating his crispy corn flakes and leaving him to work on an empty stomach.

Michelle Yeoh Refuses to Get Played Off

While Michelle Yeoh gracefully accepted her well-deserved award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” actor didn’t let the exit music playing off stage kill her vibe. “Shut up, please,” Yeoh said as the music began playing before going further to say “I can beat you up” to laughter in the audience. Though there was a slight delay, the music did eventually quiet, letting her finish her emotional speech.

Ryan Murphy Cedes His Entire Acceptance Speech to Shout Out Other People

Honored with the Carol Burnett Award, showrunner and producer Ryan Murphy took most of his acceptance speech to shout out LGBTQ+ and POC professionals with whom he has worked over his expansive career. He began with Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who became the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe for “Pose.” He then shouted out Billy Porter, who presented him with the award, not only for his role in “Pose” but also for his reinvention of fashion with his signature tuxedo dress at the 2019 Oscars. Murphy also shouted out Niecy Nash-Betts, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope for their paving of paths in the industry for LGBTQ+ folks. “There is a way forward. Use them as your North Stars,” he said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy Makes a Surprise Appearance

Following an introduction from Sean Penn, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a surprise appearance during a pre-recorded video with a hopeful message that “the tide is turning.” While Zelenskyy pointed out how the inaugural Golden Globe Awards were presented in 1943, prior to the end of the second World War, he assured viewers and audience members that “there will be no Third World War.” “It is not a trilogy,” he said. “Ukraine will stop the Russian aggression on our land.” Just around a month after Zelenskyy made a visit to meet with President Joe Biden, he continued to thank the “free people of the free world” for their support for Ukraine.

“No matter who you are, no matter where you’re from, no matter who you are with, the struggle for the right of the new generations to know about the war only from movies,” he said. “I hope all of you will be with us on the victorious day: the day of our victory.”

Jennifer Coolidge Makes Drunk Mike White Cry

Jennifer Coolidge won yet again for her role as Tanya McLeod in Season 2 of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” She got to finish her Emmys speech that was cut short, setting her Golden Globe on the floor and launching into a hilarious and moving speech. She shouted out Ryan Murphy for keeping her career going with little jobs, and then she praised “The White Lotus” creator Mike White for “worrying about the world, worrying about people, worrying about animals.” White — who later admitted he was too drunk because there was no food — teared up at her shoutout. “You make people want to live longer and I didn’t,” Coolidge concluded.

best speeches golden globes

Jerrod Carmichael's Monologue

Host Jerrod Carmichael sat right down to address the elephant in the room: the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's lack of diversity, and the work the organization has ( or hasn't ) done over the past two years.

"I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here because I'm Black," Carmichael said. He went on to recall how he got the gig, joking, "One minute you're making mint tea at home, the next you're invited to be the Black face of the embattled White organization. Life really comes extra fast, you know?"

Niecy Nash's Love for Rihanna

Before presenting the award for best television actress musical or comedy at Tuesday's ceremony in Los Angeles, Niecy Nash told Rihanna from the stage, "Rihanna, I love you and I dressed up as you for Halloween . I just had to say that. Had to take my moment."

Later in the show, Billy Porter echoed her sentiment, joking that if he believed in Halloween, he'd have dressed as Rihanna, too.

Ke Huy Quan's Win

Former child star Ke Huy Quan won best supporting actor for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once . This was his first nomination and win.

"When I started my career as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , I felt so very lucky to have been chosen. As I grew older, I started to wonder it that was it, if that was just luck," he said in his moving acceptance speech . "For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer — that no matter what I did, I would never surpass what I did as a kid. Thankfully, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that kid. And they gave me an opportunity to try again."

Ryan Murphy's Speech

In his acceptance speech for the Carol Burnett Award, prolific director and producer Ryan Murphy used his time to recognize some of the stars of his shows, touching on the adversity they'd overcome.

"I never saw a person like me getting an award or a TV show," he said, before honoring Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Niecy Nash, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope.

Jennifer Coolidge's Moment

White Lotus winner Jennifer Coolidge gave the people what they wanted: a hilarious speech that morphed into a touching tribute to series creator Mike White.

"If you don't know Mike White, this is something you should know: he's worried about the world, he's worried about people, you're worried about animals," she said as White teared up. "He really is one of the greatest people I've ever met, he gives me so much excitement to be, you make people want to live longer and I didn't."

Eddie Murphy's Honor

Tracy Morgan introduced a look back on Eddie Murphy 's decades-long career before Jamie Lee Curtis helped him present Murphy with the Cecil B. DeMille Award . After thanking colleagues and loved ones, Murphy joked about the blueprint to success in Hollywood: "It's very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind you business — and keep Will Smith 's wife's name out your f---ing mouth!"

Austin Butler Won't Ever Shake the Elvis Accent

And hey, that's okay. Golden Globes best actor nominee Austin Butler arrived on the red carpet with Elvis twang in tow, and Twitter, of course, picked up on it. But as one astute commenter noted, “What everyone complaining about Austin Butler’s Elvis voice doesn’t understand is that the most Hollywood thing you can do is create and accent and stick to it.”

It seemed to be Elvis Presley himself who accepted the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, not Austin. "My boy, my boy," said Austin (Elvis?) as he took the stage. At the end of his acceptance his speech, he swore to always remember Elvis. I mean... how could we forget? It might be time for the Elvis Exorcism of Austin Butler. The real kicker is when he told Elvis he loved him. Ah, Hollywood.

While speaking to a correspondent for Variety on the Golden Globes red carpet, Barbie star Margot Robbie teased the movie's extravagant wardrobe. “I talked to Greta. She told me there were so many more Ken looks that we haven’t seen," said the rep from Variety .

“So many more everything that you haven’t seen," said Margot with a mischievous smile. Memorable Golden Globe Award Speeches

After a dazzling Red Carpet display, guests and nominees of the Golden Globes sat down at their tables to enjoy the show. As the night’s first winner was announced—Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture—audience members were reminded of the power of this annual celebration of excellence in film and television.

Once Randolph reached center stage to accept her award, she brought out a small, hand-written, folded-up note. She proceeded to express a thoughtfully pre-meditated thanks to her collaborators and supporters, inspiring audiences in person and watching from afar with her win.

Over the years, Golden Globes winners have given speeches in various styles, intentions, and thanks. A particularly unique and touching array of speeches graced the stage this year.

This evening, when Ayo Edebiri won her first Golden Globe as an Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series for her work on The Bear, we were endeared by her authentic reaction and from-the-heart speech. Edebiri first expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be a working artist and thanked her “family, family, family,” gesturing to her collaborators on The Bear. Her exuberance reminded us of what the Globes celebrate and acknowledge—excellence in filmmakers’ teamwork and artistic collaboration. Edebiri also thanked an often-overlooked hero of the industry: her managers and agents’ assistants! This call-out won great applause. She thanked her “actual family” for their support, as well, in a humorous moment that showcased some of the authentic quality of her star power.

Later on, Kieran Culkin, previously nominated four times, finally won for his role in Succession, an Actor in a Drama TV Series. In his speech, he highlighted how meaningful reaching this point was.

In Emma Stone’s speech for her win as Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for her work in Poor Things, she discussed how her work on the film changed her perspective on her life. Her speech highlighted her thanks for the experience of making the film and how it also changed her philosophy. She utilized her moment on the Golden Globes platform to say something about how art changes people—both as creators and viewers.

In an evening of countless memorable moments, there are equally as many unique winners’ speeches—concise opportunities for the artists to speak for themselves and their work.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards took place on Jan. 7 at the Beverly Hilton, its home since 1961. The three-hour ceremony aired live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

Michelle Yeoh Can Beat Us Up for Real

Portrait of Alejandra Gularte

Michelle Yeoh quite frankly can beat anybody up and they would say, “Thank you, Dr. Yeoh.” As she won her first award for Best Actress at the 2023 Golden Globes , her film career flashed before her eyes — and she might have made the pianist trying to play her off feel the same way. Yeoh remembered her heartbreaking entrance into Hollywood and how, after many years in the business, Everything Everywhere All At Once helped her feel like things have changed. “I remember when I first came to Hollywood, it was a dream come true — until I got here,” joked Yeoh. “As time went by — I turned 60 last year — I think all of you women understand this as the days, the years, and the numbers get bigger, it seems like opportunities start to get smaller as well.” And while no one was exempt from being played off by pianist Chloe Flower, Yeoh reminded her that she can still do her own stunts. “I can beat you up,” she joked. “And that’s serious.” Look, if Michelle Yeoh threatened to beat us up, it would be our honor.

Best and Worst Moments From the 2024 Golden Globes

Lily Gladstone made history, Jo Koy did not. And dressing on a theme proved a hit. These were just some of the highs and lows.

The Golden Globes had a lot to prove Sunday night . It was the award show’s return to a primo broadcast time slot after a series of scandals over finances and lack of diversity upended what used to be known as the biggest party of the year in Hollywood. Now privately owned with a greatly expanded pool of voters, the Globes were making a bid for relevance. Did that bid succeed? Well, it helped that this was the first major televised ceremony since the writers’ and actors’ strikes brought Hollywood to a halt, and stars and studios looking to goose their Oscar chances turned out after some skipped last year’s event. Then again, this wasn’t the liveliest show. Here are the highs and lows as we saw them.

Most Historic Win: Lily Gladstone

In a momentous triumph, Lily Gladstone became the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for best actress, for her turn in “ Killers of the Flower Moon ” as an Osage woman whose family members are killed in a plot to take their fortune. Gladstone, whose background is Blackfeet and Nez Perce, was only the second Native actress to receive recognition from the Globes: Irene Bedard was nominated in 1995 for “Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee,” a television movie.

After receiving a standing ovation, an overcome Gladstone spoke a few lines in the Blackfeet language, “the beautiful community nation that raised me, that encouraged me to keep going, keep doing this,” she explained in English.

“I’m so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language,” she added later, “because in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English, and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera.” She dedicated the award to “every little rez kid” who had a dream. — Esther Zuckerman

Least Suspenseful Rivalry: ‘Oppenheimer’ vs. ‘Barbie’

In the end, the great “Barbenheimer” face-off was a complete fizzle. “Oppenheimer,” with eight nominations, won five trophies — best drama, director, actor, supporting actor and score. After sitting on the sidelines for most of the night, “Barbie,” the ceremony’s most-nominated film, with nine nods, finally got in the game with a win in the rather meaningless category of best blockbuster (“cinematic and box office achievement”). “Barbie” got a second prize in the form of best song, which was kind of a no-brainer because the film’s tunes filled three of the category’s six slots. Time to rev up that Oscar campaign, Babs! — Brooks Barnes

The best and worst moments from the 2024 Golden Globes

The all-new Golden Globes had some all-new lows, and a handful of highs.

best speeches golden globes

Somewhere, the former members of the now-defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association are thinking, "Well, at least they can't blame this on us."

The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards , hosted by the normally funny comedian Jo Koy , was an awkward and often clunky affair, but there were some moments of levity during the torpid evening. If you didn't watch (and you probably didn't), we've got a full report for you below.

Worst: Giving Jo Koy this thankless job

There’s no question that Jo Koy is a funny guy. There’s also no question that hosting the Golden Globes — especially on less than three weeks’ notice , and especially on CBS, a network that probably has to Google “fun” like Carmy on The Bear — is a thankless job. And so it was hard to blame the comedian for throwing the show’s writers under the proverbial bus when his monologue started to go south… almost immediately. (You'll never convince us that CBS didn’t insist that he begin the night with a shout-out to Yellowstone star Kevin Costner — hooray for awkward corporate synergy!) “Some I wrote, some other people wrote,” Koy said under his breath after one of his Barbie jokes was met with the absence of laughter. “I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up… I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.” Koy did earn a few legitimate laugh lines (that joke about De Niro’s “latest performance” was pretty solid), but we’ll likely never know what the comedian could have done if he had the time — and the permission — to write something truly his own.

Best: Robert Downey Jr.’s 'Golden Globes journalists' shade

Hollywood gritted its teeth and threw on some couture last year for the first Golden Globes since controversy upended the organization behind the annual show, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Accepting his award for Best Supporting Actor, Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr. was sure to take a jab at the “Golden Globe journalists,” thanking them “for changing your game and therefore changing your names.” The HFPA is dead, long live the Golden Globes journalists…. you know, until the next uncomfortable controversy.

Worst: The schmoozy announcer trying to remind us how fun the Globes are

We get it, the Golden Globes is Hollywood’s “Fun Awards Show.” Compared to what? The Oscars? Also known as four hours of your life you’ll never get back. But the Globes are grasping for relevancy as the CBS announcer reminded us going into or coming out of commercial break. “Censors will be standing by!” he taunted, should any celebs have too much fun. “ Keri Russell is in PARTY MODE!” he claimed as  The Diplomat  star took a selfie, apparently universal shorthand for a rager of a time. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Globes are fun because everyone’s drunk. And it wouldn’t hurt if the audience was too.

Best: Doing the write thing

Ahead of presenting the award for Best Screenplay, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Daniel Kaluuya , Hailee Steinfeld , and Shameik Moore used their podium banter to honor writers — who spent 148 days this summer striking for a fair contract. “To demonstrate the importance of writers and writing, we asked that this segment be written not by writers, but by studio executives,” announced Kaluuya. The trio then launched into a comically stilted exchange that read like the output of an AI program with clinical depression: “I am relatable,” chirped Steinfeld. “I am enjoy the Golden Globs. Do you agree?” Not quite, but this bit was a winner.

Worst: Making stars walk through a labyrinth to get to the stage

How cruel is it to make anyone wearing an elaborate gown slowly shuffle, "pardon," squeeze by, and finesse their way through some of the most famous people in the world to finally get to the stage to accept an award? The Globes have always been fond of a crowded table of stars, but those stars looked like very fancy anchovies stuffed into that Beverly Hilton banquet hall. And maneuvering trains and hems between chairs and obliging celebs just ate away at the little time the winners had to breathlessly list all the people they hadn’t forgotten to thank.

Worst: The bland, canned presenter banter

Rich Polk/Golden Globes 2024/Golden Globes 2024 via Getty Images

There were a lot of issues with the writing behind the Golden Globes this year, but host Jo Koy’s monologue wasn’t the cringiest scripted moment. Which is saying a lot. No, that goes to the various pairings of celebs there to present the night’s categories. As professional actors, these folks know how to sell a line, but barring a few exceptions, most of the banter was painfully flat — even by awards show standards. None induced the cringe more than Kevin Costner’s mumbled intro to Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy as a very game America Ferrera tried to keep the train on the tracks. Instead of dancing with wolves, she ended up dancing alone.

Best: Jennifer Lawrence’s audience work

Jennifer Lawrence always has a great sense of humor about the Globes, like when she won Best Actress in a Comedy in 2013 for  Silver Linings Playbook  and referenced one of the greatest films of all time,  The First Wives’ Club : “What does it say? I beat Meryl.” Nominated this year in the same category for  No Hard Feelings , Lawrence mouthed from the audience, “If I don’t win, I’m leaving.” She didn’t win, but instead of leaving she stood and cheered for the eventual winner Emma Stone for  Poor Things . Of course, she might have snuck out after the commercial break, but she’s (probably) a better sport than that.

Best: The white stuff

Taking the stage to present the award for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Made for TV Movie, Simu Liu and Issa Rae acknowledged how privileged they felt to play Barbie and Ken in Greta Gerwig ’s blockbuster this summer. The experience was “pretty impactful for people who look like us,” said Liu. Noting that they both hope “to continue to push the boundaries of what roles we can play,” Rae and Liu began fantasizing about all the “white-people roles” on their wish list: “An alcoholic divorced single father fighting for custody”; “An alcoholic housewife whose husband’s affair drives her deeper into alcoholism”; and “an alcoholic schoolteacher who must put their love of alcohol aside to inspire their class of inner-city youths.” Honestly, if all three of these projects aren’t greenlit by the end of the night, Hollywood has failed.

Best: Another classic Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig Globes bit

Most actors fumble their way through presenting at awards shows... and then there’s Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig , who have never met a bit they didn’t dive into wholeheartedly. Recall  their classic “Geeeeetttt oooouuuuuttt!”  bit at the 2013 Globes. In by far the funniest moment of the night — even though the bar was low — Ferrell and Wiig started presenting Best Musical or Comedy in as straight a fashion as they could muster, only to be randomly interrupted by some jazzy melody again and again. First, they’re annoyed by it, only to embrace it with a little inspired choreo. It’s so dumb and so silly and as delivered by these two comedic geniuses, was pure perfection. It was just what the Globes needed to lighten a show that was more clunky and awkward than it had any right to be. Now geeeeeeetttt ooooouuuuttta here.

The 81st Annual Golden Globes are finally in the history books. The ceremony was filled with the usual aspects that give the Globes a special place in our hearts: incredible winners, glamor, an open bar and, of course, fantastic speeches. Some were funny while others reflected on history-making moments at the event. Below we’ve listed our choices for the best speeches of the night. Did your favorite make the list? If not, which ones are we missing? Let us know in the comments section and by voting in our poll below.

Best Film Drama Actress: Lily Gladstone , “Killers of the Flower Moon”

In becoming the first indigenous person to win the category, Gladstone started her speech by speaking in the Blackfeet language and then acknowledged her mother who helped get the language taught in her school. She remarked on the history that Native people have had in the entertainment industry, like how Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then sound mixers would run the audio backwards to give the appearance of them speaking in a Native language. After thanking her “Killers” cast and crew, she said that the award was “for every little res kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented and our stories told by ourselves in our own words, with tremendous allies and tremendous trust with and from each other.”

Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor: Paul Giamatti , “The Holdovers”

Giamatti opened his speech by commenting that there were too many stairs and that his knees were shot, so he’s “never gonna be in ‘John Wick 5’ at this rate.” He then remarked that this must be the first time this award has been given to an actor for playing someone who smells like fish. After thanking his “Holdovers” family, he shouted out his son, Samuel, who just graduated college. He closed by giving thanks to teachers, of which several are in his family, saying, “Teachers are good people. You gotta respect ‘em. They do a good thing. It’s a tough job.”

Best Film Supporting Actor: Robert Downey, Jr., “Oppenheimer”

Downey started off by revealing, “I took a beta blocker so this should be a breeze.” He then reflected on how the idea of a movie like “Oppenheimer” being as successful as it was doesn’t track with reality. He shouted out Christopher Nolan , his co-stars and producer Emma Thomas , saying “they helped render a goddamn masterpiece.” After saying his award was a “Most Improved Player sort of thing” he thanked his agents who said he needed to restart his career, joking that “it’s so fun proving agents right.” He ended by thanking his wife Susan for taking him out of his comfort zones, “but she’s easy on the eyes, so whatevs.”

Best TV Drama Actor: Kieran Culkin , “Succession”

The first thing he did was tell the standing audience members to sit down. Then he suppressed a belch and simply explained, “Sorry. Burping. Indigestion.” He reminisced about being at the ceremony 21 years ago when he was nominated for the film “Igby Goes Down” and thinking that he would never be in that room again. He then jokingly delivered what might be the line of the night by taunting “Suck it, Pedro” to fellow nominee Pedro Pascal . He closed by thanking his manager, his mother and his wife, whom he appreciates for “putting up with all of this” as he gestured to his head and body.

Best TV Comedy Actress: Ayo Edebiri , “The Bear”

It was obvious that the moment was a lot for Edebiri to take in. While breathing heavily she acknowledged the cast and crew of “ The Bear ” as her family before thanking her actual family, saying, “I love you guys too.” She was about to end her speech before remembering to thank the assistants of her agents and managers who “answer my crazy emails.” A beautiful tribute to unsung heroes of this industry.

Best TV Movie/Limited Series: Lee Sung Jin, “Beef”

Upon receiving his trophy, Lee explained to the audience that the Netflix limited series was inspired by an actual instance of road rage that happened to him: “I’d be remiss not to thank that driver. Sir, I hope you honk and yell and inspire others for years to come.”
