Outdoor Research Archangel in Alaska

Outdoor Research (OR) has a reputation for producing no-nonsense outerwear for hardcore alpinists, and GORE-TEX is a staple waterproof-breathable membrane for that audience. Gore released GORE-TEX Pro in 2020, and the big news was that this new version was stretchy.

Stretchy GORE-TEX? For this ice climber, that was great news — if it worked. I was dubious, especially of its durability. But I shoved them into my bag anyway as I packed for a trip to search for big ice first ascents in the backcountry of Alaska.

OR released the Archangel Collection last year. It touts the use of the new GORE-TEX Pro to “balance speed and efficiency without compromising protection.” I took the jacket and bibs to Alaska last month for a week of scouting and attempting ice first ascents in the backcountry. Here’s what I found.

Outdoor Research Archangel Ice Climbing

Outdoor Research Archangel: Stretch Where It Matters

OR uses the Stretch Technology version of GORE-TEX Pro (Gore claims 20% stretch) in the upper back, lower hood, knees, and crotch gusset.

The panels in the upper back were noticeable while poling during approach skiing and while ice climbing on harder pitches. I am broad across the shoulders for how small my torso is, and most men’s medium jackets are a bit tight across the upper back.

But the Outdoor Research Archangel jacket alleviated the usual tension. I could tell it came from the stretch panels because my backpack remained stationary; I can usually feel my pack moving horizontally when the upper back of my jacket is too tight.

The GORE-TEX Pro stretch crotch gusset was also a winner. On a memorable pitch, I had to stem over overhanging daggers to avoid possibly launching them off.

The move was at the limit of my hip mobility, but the bibs had no problem even when pinned under the leg loops of my harness. The stretchiness surely helped in this particular situation.

Ice climbing in Alaska

Same for the stretch panels in the knees. On the hardest pitch of the trip, I had to high step onto crazy mushroom formations at nearly crotch level.

I had my pants attached to my boots via a bungee cord through the eyelets in the lower hem to act as a “self gaiter,” which prevented them from riding up. The stretchy knees did the trick.

Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket

Breathability Everywhere Else

OR chose to use the breathable version of GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology elsewhere in the Archangel jacket and bibs . Breathability is the performance limiter for waterproof/breathable shells for me when the outing involves any physical effort beyond easy walking. So, this strategy made sense to me.

This Most Breathable Technology uses a lighter denier face fabric compared to the GORE-TEX Pro Most Rugged Technology. I had another shell that was entirely made of the more rugged version, and the lighter weight and softer hand of the fabric were obvious. The Most Breathable Technology fabric was easier to move in while the Most Rugged Technolgy fabric felt stiff and crinkly.

But the “enhanced breathability” was hard to quantify. According to Gore, the Most Breathable Technology tests out to the same ISO 11092 breathability scores as the former, standard GORE-TEX, so there is no relative gain.

The Most Rugged fabric, which measures less breathable by the same test, felt less breathable during approaches when body movement was the most aggressive and consistent, all venting options being roughly the same.

Outdoor Research Archangel Bibs

But the Ruggedness?

The Outdoor Research Archangel jacket and bibs admirably resisted damage through a week of hard use. Jagged granite and ice, stray ski edges and crampon points, and haphazardly racked and unracked ice screws all attempted to shred the shell.

I am notoriously hard on gear, and the Archangel surprised me despite the relative wispy hand of the GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology.

But the limits of the breathable fabric were exposed in comparison to GORE-TEX Pro Most Rugged Technology. I rock climb mostly, and without fail, I will catch a crampon point on the inside of my lower leg stepping through, forgetting how much bigger my foot is with the boot and crampon.

Every single pair of shell and softshell climbing pants I own has telltale patches, and I don’t consider that a flaw of the fabrics chosen. It’s user error brought about by yours truly, trying to use sport climbing techniques on ice.

But on this trip, I had a direct comparison come alive, as I had bibs made of the rugged version of GORE-TEX Pro. On consecutive days, I did the exact same thing, with the same foot.

I caught a mono point on the inside lower leg of the OR Archangel bib, unfortunately just above the edge guard. I made the identical mistake on the other bibs, in almost the exact same spot.

On the OR Archangel, with the breathable fabric, I tore a ¾-inch rip. On the other, most rugged fabric bibs, it was barely a puncture.

You can see the difference in the image below. Same crampon point, same foot, same spot on pants, doing the exact same thing. And I know I had more force behind the stray point on the Most Rugged bibs.

Crampon point damage on bibs

I still don’t fault the OR Archangel; I have torn every pant this way if I miss the edge guard. But it is a notable difference between the two versions of GORE-TEX Pro.

All the Needs, None of the Extras

I felt the OR Archangel had all the features I needed for alpine and backcountry ice climbing, without extras that would do nothing but add weight.

Outdoor Research Archangel jacket and bibs have the following main features:

  • Full side zips on bibs, pit zips on jacket
  • Large zipped handwarmer pockets on jacket with stretch mesh internal pockets for small items
  • One internal zipped chest pocket on jacket and an external one on bibs
  • One thigh pocket on bibs
  • Eyelets at lower hem for elastic and belt loops on bibs
  • Captive cord lock on hood and lower hem of jacket
  • Brim stiffener on hood
  • The jacket in men’s medium had a verified weight of 1 lb., 2 oz.; the bibs were 1 lb., 8 oz.
  • MSRP $649 each for jacket and bibs and available in men’s and women’s versions

I used every feature listed during the trip. The only thing I wished for, and for every other similar trip, is for the edge guard of the bibs to extend further up to help prevent crampon point damage. I could be more careful, but I don’t have a single alpine or ice climbing partner that doesn’t catch a point on the inside lower leg.

OR Archangel

Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket and Bibs: Conclusions

I test a lot of shells and the primary purpose is to keep you dry when it’s crucial, both from the outside elements and from internally generated moisture. Most do the first remarkably well, and the latter is usually lacking for more intense pursuits.

GORE-TEX Pro inched the game up with the improved mobility of Stretch Technology. The OR Archangel makes good use of it. But most of the breathability requirements were best mitigated by changing layering and making use of all the zips and vents.

Even by Gore’s PR , the GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology is no better than before, only better than the newer Most Rugged Technology.

IMG_0879-2

The Outdoor Research Archangel jacket did provide for freer movement in situations where it mattered. And it did prevent both wind and water from penetrating, which would have been catastrophic given the 10- to 20-degree temperatures and sometimes heavy snowfall and wind.

It also survived very harsh treatment outside of a crampon point, which derails all my shell pants.

But following the norm for alpine-oriented shells, the breathability was still a factor, best mitigated by removing layers and opening vents. The Holy Grail of membranes is still out of reach.

In the end, the Archangel is a super-capable workhorse shell that has excellent mobility, durability for alpine pursuits, and the features needed with nothing superfluous. A solid choice for mountain endeavors in challenging conditions.

Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs Review

Here in Northern Colorado we are off to the best ski season in years. Our local mountain has gotten over 150 inches of snow before the new year which has made for some of the best early season skiing in a long time. All of this great skiing has also made me realize that it is time to update some of my ski gear and this will start with the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs from Outdoor Research .

Over the past few weeks I have been skiing in the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs from Outdoor Research. Outdoor Research was founded by adventure enthusiast Ron Gregg. On an expedition in Denali, Ron experienced gear failure that led to the trip being cut short. Once back in home, Ron quit his job and decided to start engineering outdoor gear that would meet the demands of outdoor adventures. Today the company Outdoor Research is based in Seattle, Washington.

With storm after storm rolling in and more on the way this is the perfect time to get out and get some turns in. This was also a perfect opportunity to try out the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs and see how they held up to the deep powder.

Initial Thoughts on the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs

The Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs are designed to be all mountain ski pants that are made to withstand the rigors of deep snow and big mountain descents. The construction of these bibs is reflected in their engineering.

The Archangel Bibs are constructed using the GORE-TEX Pro 3L. The GORE-TEX Pro 3L offers top of the line protection from the elements. This material is a 3 layer system that provides durability, breathability, and mobility. The outermost layer utilizes 20- 300 denier fabric that is snag proof and tear resistant. Underneath this protective layer is a breathable, waterproof, and tear resistant inner layer. This technology is why GORE-TEX is widely known as some of the most bomb proof material on the market.

Testing the Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs on the Slopes

To allow for mobility, stretch panels have been incorporated throughout the design. These panels have been strategically placed in the knees, lower back, and crotch gusset. Around the ankles are adjustable safeguard cuffs. These durably designed areas are made to protect against ski edges and crampon punctures.

Design Features

Outdoor Research also is on top of design features for times when “nature calls.” In the front there is a small zipper to allow for relief. Additionally, there is also a rear hatch that can be accessed by two zippers that run the length of the sides of the bibs.

The storage features of the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs come from two pockets. One pocket is on the chest of the bibs. This pocket is relatively small and can hold items like a cell phone or car keys. The side pocket located on the right side of the bibs is quite deep. This pocket is more substantial than the chest pocket and could accommodate a small water pouch and snacks.

Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs Front Pocket

The suspender straps are held on by releasable suspender clips. These clips are designed so that straps can come off easily so that undergarments can be changed up easily and effortlessly.

Testing the Archangel Bibs

Weatherproof is how I would describe these Archangel Bibs. I have had a chance to ski these bibs when it has been dumping snow, in deep powder, and in howling winds. They have seen the full array of Colorado weather this month and I have been super pleased with how they have held up.

Testing the Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs in Cold and Windy conditions

The GORE- TEX Pro 3L is some bomber material. Even when snow would be sitting on my thighs on a long chair lift ride, I would have no soak through. It was impressive how dry I stayed even through several days of skiing in weather where snow, ice, and water would build up on the outside of the pants. These pants are definitely waterproof and hold up well to inclement weather.

Wet Chairlift Ride while wearing the Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs

The Fit of the Archangel Bibs

For me the Archangel Bibs fit ok. I am 5’10 and 180 pounds and went with the large size. Most of the time I find myself somewhere between size medium and large. In outerwear I tend to error on the side of caution and go with the larger size. This allows for layering underneath. Since Archangel Bibs are a shell I was planning on wearing at least one layer underneath.

Fit of the Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs

The length of the bibs were near perfect. I found that they came up low but not too low on my boot. I like this as it is another layer of protection from snow coming in.

A Couple Fit Issues

The waist and thighs are where I have most issues with fit. The waist of the size large bibs is too big for me. I have to admit that I may have gone a little overboard on holiday cookies this year but even so the waistline on the Archangel bibs is more than generous. The result is the leftover material bunches in the back. Though this is not a problem or even noticeable with a jacket over the top. If I was skinning in a snowstorm or on a sunny spring ski day where I didn’t wear a jacket over top, this could be a problem.

The other area I have a bit of fit issues with are the upper thighs and crotch. These areas of the bibs are a bit tight for me. I would consider my thighs large as I was a former collegiate sprinter so I sometimes have a tight fit in outerwear. However, I would think that in a size large I would be good to go, yet they were a bit snug. None of the fit issues were a deal killer but were definitely noticeable.

The Bells and Whistles

These bibs are definitely minimalistic which will work for most people. The front pocket is the perfect size for car keys and a cell phone. When wearing a jacket over the top I have really only used this pocket for my keys as digging for my cell phone would be a hassle. The hip pocket is really nice and deep. I have been using this for holding snacks and even a small hydration water pouch. Even with these items inside this there is still more than enough room. One thing that I find a bit interesting is why there is not a complementary pocket on the other side. This is really not an issue for me but I would imagine if I was left handed, I may like the pocket to be on the left side for easier access.

The scuff guard around the base of the bibs is great. I like how burly this is. When skinning I find that this is when my ski pants get the most torn up. My ski edges sometimes hit my pants causing small cuts that need to get repaired. I don’t see this being that much of an issue on these bibs. The rest of the leg cuff area is also well thought out. The inner portion of the cuff is a snow gator and can be snugly secured around the top of the ski boot. These have been great in the deep snow. Not even once have I had snow get into my boots.

Outdoor Research Hemispheres’ kit garnered a lot of attention at its release in 2018 due to its claimed balance of weather protection and freedom of movement. To put it to the test, we hit the skin track and resort with the Hemispheres Bib, where it encountered everything from fresh powder to heavy, wet snow typical of the Pacific Northwest. In the end, it proved just as capable in the backcountry as it was on lift-assisted terrain and impressed us with its comfort, weatherproofing ability, and stretchiness. Below we outline our experiences with the Hemispheres Bib. To see how it stacks up, see our articles on the best ski pants  and best ski bibs . What We Don’t

  • Reinforced scuff guards could be wider. They got caught on the ski/walk lever of my boot at times.
  • Another pocket or two for storage would be helpful.
  • At $599, the Hemispheres Bib is among the most expensive options on the market.
  • I found the power-strap slots on the internal gaiters to be time-consuming and unnecessary. In the end, I chose not to use them.

$349 Backcountry/resort Hardshell w/stretch 3L Ascentshell 1 lb. 11.1 oz.
$599 Backcountry Hardshell 3L Gore-Tex Pro 1 lb. 4.6 oz.

$420 Resort/backcountry Hardshell 3L Surface 2 lbs. 1.4 oz.

The Outdoor Research Hemispheres Bib nicely balances waterproof protection with the mobility and ventilation needed for touring, making it one of our favorite ski pants for dedicated backcountry-goers. This season, OR also released their Skytour kit, including the similarly intentioned Skytour AscentShell Bib . As its name suggests, the Skytour uses OR’s in-house AscentShell waterproofing tech, which stretches like a softshell, breathes impressively well, and doesn’t compromise much in the way of protection. However, the torso of the Skytour uses a water-resistant (rather than fully waterproof) softshell material, and it’s around 6 ounces heavier than the Hemispheres. These downsides aside, the Skytour is an excellent value at $349 and plenty of pant for most backcountry adventurers. If you consistently get out in harsh and unpredictable conditions, it might be worth upgrading to the Hemispheres.

Man Snowboarding in Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket

Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket Review

Jon Allen

For a minute there, Old Man Winter was taking his sweet time waking up this season much to the chagrin of countless backcountry enthusiasts across the country. But recently he’s made a decisive and welcome appearance in the Wasatch mountains of Utah which has given me ample opportunity to test Outdoor Research’s Archangel Jacket in the face of his pow-filled breath.

Materials & Construction

Man Wearing Backcountry Ski Jacket

Crafted using GORE-TEX’s highest quality material, GORE-TEX Pro(and its Pro Stretch variant), the Archangel Jacket is designed to be completely windproof and waterproof while retaining great breathability, durability, and a useful degree of stretch. This is exactly what one would hope for in a shell designed to put up with potentially technical, scrambly ascents on a regular basis.

The majority of the shell is constructed with GORE-TEX Pro and the stretchier version of GORE-TEX Pro can be found on the upper back panels, providing some noticeable give when extending one’s arms.

Performance

Man Snowboarding in Snow Storm

In practice, much of the claims made by GORE-TEX about this material rang true. I spent hours using this shell in trying conditions, and, as one would expect in a 3-layer GORE-TEX shell, I found it to indeed be completely wind and waterproof. Its breathability was also notable. It seemed that the Archangel’s GORE-TEX Pro material is slightly more breathable than GORE-TEX’s “Active” material which is saying a lot.

As long as I wasn’t going full gas and sweating an ungodly amount, I found that this Outdoor Research shell allowed me to ward off a massive accumulation of sweat, and the amount of moisture that did build up inside the shell ended up drying out over time which I found to be quite surprising! It did not at all feel like being trapped inside a garbage bag, which is all one can hope for when using a shell with such great weatherproof properties.

Snowboard Jacket with Pit Zips

I was impressed by all the useful features this jacket has. For one, the main zipper is of the double zipper style which is great when using the shell for an extended period of time. When using the shell with a harness or backpack, the ability to unzip just the bottom for extra wiggle room while stationary is quite a luxury. Even unzipping the top and/or bottom during any given high-output effort for extra breathability is a welcome plus.

Like the main zipper, the pit zips are of the double zipper style which is great if you need to dial in where exactly you want your ventilation. However, this is a feature I could take or leave as the zippers themselves are quite bulky. And having two together in the wrong position can cause a bit of rubbing/catching while swinging one’s arms. But this is a minor gripe, as in practice the zippers are not too noticeable.

Perhaps this is due to my oversized noggin, but some of the jackets I’ve used previously that boast helmet compatibility end up creating the sensation that the entire jacket is being propped up by my helmet. This was not the case with the Archangel. The hood features two distinct modes for use with and without a helmet using a simple hook on the rear of the hood. In helmet mode, there’s plenty of space for a large ski or climbing helmet. And in hat mode, the hood hook combined with the easily accessible and glove-compatible elastic pulls reduce the volume in the hood greatly. You won’t have to worry about having the hood creep into your line of sight.

Internal Pocket

The Archangel features three pockets. There are two hip belt and climbing harness compatible front pockets with inner mesh pouches to keep things from bouncing around or sinking to the bottom of the pocket. These two pockets utilize the same zippers as the main zipper and pit zips, which I found to be smooth, burly, and glove-compatible.  There’s also one inner chest pocket which is large enough for a large smartphone.

Man Modeling Ski Jacket

I am 5’10 and weigh about 180 lbs. and I found the size medium to fit more snugly around the torso than other medium size backcountry shells I have used. However, the volume in the arms and the length of the garment felt on par with what you would expect. Considering the more technical intended uses of the Archangel, the snugger, more athletic fit is more of a feature than a bug.

As far as GORE-TEX Pro snow garments go, the Outdoor Research Archangel is on the more affordable end of the spectrum with an MSRP of $699. RAB and Arc’teryx offer similar shells with MSRPs that are $50-$100 less than the Archangel. However, it seems the vast majority of GORE-TEX Pro shells in this category will run $750-$900. For example, if you’re a big Jones person, their Shralpinist shell will run you a whopping $850 .

Overall Impression

Jon Allen Snowboarding in the Backcountry

The Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket ($699.99) is OR’s top-tier backcountry shell, and it shows. While its high price may induce a serious case of sticker shock, if you require the features it provides, you will not be disappointed. However, for the average skier/splitboarder, I feel this garment is overkill. After all, it was co-designed by a winner of the Piolet d’Or to be equally at home alpine climbing as it is touring in the backcountry.

So if gnarly mountaineering ascents aren’t your style I would suggest you look elsewhere. There are other 3-layer Gore-Tex utilizing shells that aren’t quite as premium as the GORE-TEX Pro varieties per se but would do perfectly well. And if you’re willing to sacrifice the bombproofness of a 3-layer shell for a 2.5 or even 2-layer style, you’ll have lighter, more packable options that don’t break the bank – all while still being reasonably weatherproof.

Outdoor Research Hemispheres II Bibs Review

By: Danielle Vilaplana , Product Content Writer | September 7, 2022

The Lowdown

Technical details, ride impressions.

  • Pros & Cons

The Bottom Line

The Outdoor Research Hemispheres II Bibs are stretchy, lightweight bibs made for the backcountry. The soft 3-layer GORE-TEX C-Knit™ fabric is paired with 2-layer GORE-TEX stretch panels in key locations, so I was able to make my way up icy skin tracks and windblown ridgelines without ever feeling restricted. The fabric is very thin so it is not the warmest and probably not suitable for new skiers who will fall often, but experienced skiers will appreciate the efficiency of the Hemispheres II. They feature four zippered pockets that can carry larger items, and the long, double-zippered vents dumped heat quickly. The zippers also functioned as a dropseat for bathroom breaks, which is shockingly not standard in women’s bibs and is essential in the backcountry and tight resort stalls.  In addition to the stretch panels, the fit itself is rather baggy and leaves plenty of room for movement or extra layers. They were almost oversized on me, but this bagginess fills a rather unique niche in the ski industry in that they can accommodate a wider variety of body shapes and sizes. The adjustable shoulder straps and belt loops provide enough customization that everyone should be able to get a pretty dialed fit.

outdoor research archangel bib review

The Hemispheres II Bibs are Outdoor Research ’s premiere pants for backcountry skiing. 3L GORE-TEX C-Knit™ fabric is soft and comfortable but also fully waterproof, and 2L GORE-TEX stretch panels on the sides and inner thigh allow for a greater range of movement that is particularly appealing on the climb. The stretch panels are generally well protected from the elements and made of GORE-TEX themselves so they’re not likely to soak through, and reinforced insteps protect the thin fabric from sharp ski edges. Four zippered pockets on the thighs and chest provide plenty of storage space for backcountry essentials, and two of the pockets feature beacon clips. Two long, dual-zippered vents run asymmetrically along the sides of the thighs for dumping heat and also serve as a dropseat for quick bathroom breaks.

outdoor research archangel bib review

We had an unusually heavy spring, so I was able to test the Hemispheres II Bibs in a wide variety of conditions. I wore them to Snowbird on days where temps ranged from 15 to 50-degrees, and took them up a mountain in Wyoming for some fresh, heavy powder. They performed as expected in such diverse conditions, which speaks to their versatility and ability to meet the demands of seasoned skiers. The Hemispheres II Bibs excelled on the skintrack and in variable terrain at the resort. The soft, GORE-TEX C-Knit™ fabric and stretch panels held out blustery powder and slushy snow and never soaked through. The thin fabric blocked the wind well enough to keep warm on a cold resort day, but I rarely wear more than a pair of tights and uninsulated pants so I can’t speak to everyone’s comfort. The baggy fit does leave plenty of room for layering though, so those who run cold definitely have the ability to dress warmer.  Skinning can involve uncomfortable maneuvering on icy tracks and steep terrain, so the 2L GORE-TEX stretch panels were a huge benefit. Outdoor Research seems like more of a ski brand to me, but I also appreciated the side panels while snowboarding as that motion involves a lot more upper body twisting.  The bibs were almost too baggy on me, especially in the chest, but I usually struggle to find pants that fit me properly. I think the bagginess actually fills a unique niche in the ski industry though, as the bibs are more likely to accommodate a variety of body shapes and sizes than slimmer cut pants. The torso is excessively roomy and I had plenty of space in the seat and thighs for unrestricted movement and layering. I am not curvy in the plus-size meaning of the word but I am Cuban and Costa Rican, so I don’t fit well in Patagonia pants if you know what I’m saying. I’m not a fan of thigh pockets for anything bigger than chapstick, so I did not use them but did find they were generously sized and easily fit a phone or a beacon. I loved the kangaroo pouch pocket and could easily fit everything I needed in that pocket alone.  The zippered vents were extremely efficient and served their dual purpose of releasing heat and functioning as a drop seat for bathroom breaks. I found that unzipping just one zipper worked well enough, but it never hurts to have options. I surprisingly could not find a single other pair of full-bib ski pants that are designed for the backcountry. The Arc’teryx Incendia Bibs are at a similar price point and weight, and they also feature a soft heathered exterior and GORE-TEX membrane. But they lack the stretch that makes the Hemispheres II so nice and I don’t think they have enough venting or a dropseat, which is a little ridiculous in 2022.  The Outdoor Research Skytour Bibs are also designed for touring, but they use a proprietary membrane and weigh nearly 100g more, so they really belong in a class with heavier pants like the Flylow Foxy Bibs . All in all, the Hemispheres II seem to have filled a unique niche and they did it well.

Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

outdoor research archangel bib review

Pockets The Hemispheres II Bibs have four useful pockets, two of which have beacon clips. I don’t like the feel of bulky items in my thigh pockets, so I really appreciated the large dual-zipped kangaroo chest pocket. Stretch Panels The 2L GORE-TEX panels along the side and inner thigh allow for more flexibility than other bibs. They are placed strategically in spots that benefit from the flexibility and likely won’t get too wet, so you can move freely without worrying about performance. Smart Ventilation The asymmetrical vents were easy to use and very effective at dumping heat, and the dual zippers let me dial how much ventilation I needed. The zippers also served as a drop seat for quick and easy bathroom breaks without removing my jacket. Accommodating Fit The baggy fit can accommodate a wider range of body sizes, which is pretty unique in the ski industry.

The fit is a little strange, but fit is so subjective that it’s hard to consider it a negative. On me, the Hemispheres II Bibs were too long and wide in the torso and very baggy overall. They were also almost too long and I’m taller than average, so shorter women may need to have them hemmed. The bibs have the weird boot cut look that is unfortunately common in women’s ski pants. My Arc’teryx Sentinel LT Bibs are pretty much the same width from thigh to hem like men’s bibs and that’s really all I want. Yet I’ve seen this weird “feminine” cut in so many ski pants and I just don’t really find it flattering or useful.

Who's It For?

The Hemispheres II Bibs are catered to backcountry skiers who expect top-tier waterproofing, breathability, weight, and comfort. The bibs are intended to perform on the climb as well as the descent, thus the thin, 3L GORE-TEX C-Knit™ fabric and 2L stretch panels do not offer much warmth. The bibs seem more focused on dumping heat than retaining it via the very large zippered vents but given the primary use I think this makes perfect sense. Even so, I was never cold in the bibs and felt comfortable on a cold powder day at Snowbird, so resort skiers who also visit the backcountry will find these bibs meet all of their needs. But at $599, I wouldn’t recommend these for newbies, who might test the durability of the fabric in the seat-region beyond its intended usage.

The Hemispheres II Bibs standalone as lightweight, comfortable,  full-coverage backcountry bibs. They feature a soft and thin 3L GORE-TEX C-Knit™ fabric with 2L stretch panels for unrestricted movement and can withstand everything from stormy pow days to deep, heavy slush. The long side zips release heat quickly and easily and also serve as a dropseat for hassle-free bathroom breaks. Four zippered pockets of various sizes can hold larger items like gloves and maps, and the dual-zip kangaroo pocket was particularly useful.  I was a little less excited about the Hemispheres II Bibs than the jacket counterpart, but that is primarily due to a preference for lower cut bibs and the fact that these didn’t quite fit right. This does not indicate how they would fit other people though or have anything to do with their performance, so I would highly recommend them to backcountry skiers who prioritize comfort and weatherproofing.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

outdoor research archangel bib review

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

outdoor research archangel bib review

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

outdoor research archangel bib review

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

outdoor research archangel bib review

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

outdoor research archangel bib review

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

outdoor research archangel bib review

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

outdoor research archangel bib review

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
